• Homoscedascity test for Two-Way ANOVA

  I've been using var.test and bartlett.test to check basic ANOVA assumptions, among others, homoscedascity (homogeniety, equality of variances). Procedure is quite simple for One-Way ANOVA: bartlett.test(x ~ g) # where x is numeric, and g is a factor var.test(x ~ g) But, for 2x2 tables, i.e. Two-Way ANOVA's, I want to do something like this: bartlett.test(x ~ c(g1, g2)) # or with list; see latter: var.test(x ~ list(g1, g2)) Of course, ANOVA assumptions can be checked with graphical procedures, but what about "an arithmetic option"? Is that, at all, manageable? How do you test homoscedascity in Two-Way ANOVA?

• Python performance: iteration and operations on nested lists

  Problem Hey folks. I'm looking for some advice on python performance. Some background on my problem: Given: A mesh of nodes of size (x,y) each with a value (0...255) starting at 0 A list of N input coordinates each at a specified location within the range (0...x, 0...y) Increment the value of the node at the input coordinate and the node's neighbors within range Z up to a maximum of 255. Neighbors beyond the mesh edge are ignored. (No wrapping) BASE CASE: A mesh of size 1024x1024 nodes, with 400 input coordinates and a range Z of 75 nodes. Processing should be O(x*y*Z*N). I expect x, y and Z to remain roughly around the values in the base case, but the number of input coordinates N could increase up to 100,000. My goal is to minimize processing time. Current results I have 2 current implementations: f1, f2 Running speed on my 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Python 2.6.1: f1: 2.9s f2: 1.8s f1 is the initial naive implementation: three nested for loops. f2 is replaces the inner for loop with a list comprehension. Code is included below for your perusal. Question How can I further reduce the processing time? I'd prefer sub-1.0s for the test parameters. Please, keep the recommendations to native Python. I know I can move to a third-party package such as numpy, but I'm trying to avoid any third party packages. Also, I've generated random input coordinates, and simplified the definition of the node value updates to keep our discussion simple. In .NET 3.5, we have TimeZoneInfo namespace, here is the code: ReadOnlyCollection<TimeZoneInfo> timeZones = TimeZoneInfo.GetSystemTimeZones(); foreach (TimeZoneInfo timeZone in timeZones) string name = timeZone.DisplayName However, "DisplayName" is in English. How can I pass the cultureInfo so that it can return other languages? I tried setting the Thread.CurrentCulture and CurrentUICulture, it didn't work. Am I missing something?

• Handling Model Inheritance in ASP.NET MVC2 & NHibernate

  I've gotten myself stuck on how to handle inheritance in my model when it comes to my controllers/views. Basic Model: public class Procedure : Entity { public Procedure() { } public int Id { get; set; } public DateTime ProcedureDate { get; set; } public ProcedureType Type { get; set; } } public ProcedureA : Procedure { public double VariableA { get; set; } public int VariableB { get; set; } public int Total { get; set; } } public ProcedureB : Procedure { public int Score { get; set; } } etc... many of different procedures eventually. So, I do things like list all the procedures: public class ProcedureController : Controller { public virtual ActionResult List() { IEnumerable<Procedure> procedures = _repository.GetAll(); return View(procedures); } } but now I'm kinda stuck. Basically, from the list page, I need to link to pages where the specific subclass details can be viewed/edited and I'm not sure what the best strategy is. I thought I could add an action on the ProcedureController that would conjure up the right subclass by dynamically figuring out what repository to use and loading the subclass to pass to the view. I had to store the class in the ProcedureType object. I had to create/implement a non-generic IRepository since I can't dynamically cast to a generic one. public virtual ActionResult Details(int procedureID) { Procedure procedure = _repository.GetById(procedureID, false); string className = procedure.Type.Class; Type type = Type.GetType(className, true); Type repositoryType = typeof (IRepository<>).MakeGenericType(type); var repository = (IRepository)DependencyRegistrar.Resolve(repositoryType); Entity procedure = repository.GetById(procedureID, false); return View(procedure); } I haven't even started sorting out how the view is going to determine which partial to load to display the subclass details. I'm wondering if this is a good approach? This makes determining the URL easy. It makes reusing the Procedure display code easy. Another approach is specific controllers for each subclass. It simplifies the controller code, but also means many simple controllers for the many procedure subclasses. Can work out the shared Procedure details with a partial view. How to get to construct the URL to get to the controller/action in the first place? Time to not think about it. Hopefully someone can show me the light. Thanks in advance.

• How to best design a date/geographic proximity query on GAE?

  Hi all, I'm building a directory for finding athletic tournaments on GAE with web2py and a Flex front end. The user selects a location, a radius, and a maximum date from a set of choices. I have a basic version of this query implemented, but it's inefficient and slow. One way I know I can improve it is by condensing the many individual queries I'm using to assemble the objects into bulk queries. I just learned that was possible. But I'm also thinking about a more extensive redesign that utilizes memcache. The main problem is that I can't query the datastore by location because GAE won't allow multiple numerical comparison statements (<,<=,=,) in one query. I'm already using one for date, and I'd need TWO to check both latitude and longitude, so it's a no go. Currently, my algorithm looks like this: 1.) Query by date and select 2.) Use destination function from geopy's distance module to find the max and min latitude and longitudes for supplied distance 3.) Loop through results and remove all with lat/lng outside max/min 4.) Loop through again and use distance function to check exact distance, because step 2 will include some areas outside the radius. Remove results outside supplied distance (is this 2/3/4 combination inefficent?) 5.) Assemble many-to-many lists and attach to objects (this is where I need to switch to bulk operations) 6.) Return to client Here's my plan for using memcache.. let me know if I'm way out in left field on this as I have no prior experience with memcache or server caching in general. -Keep a list in the cache filled with "geo objects" that represent all my data. These have five properties: latitude, longitude, event_id, event_type (in anticipation of expanding beyond tournaments), and start_date. This list will be sorted by date. -Also keep a dict of pointers in the cache which represent the start and end indices in the cache for all the date ranges my app uses (next week, 2 weeks, month, 3 months, 6 months, year, 2 years). -Have a scheduled task that updates the pointers daily at 12am. -Add new inserts to the cache as well as the datastore; update pointers. Using this design, the algorithm would now look like: 1.) Use pointers to slice off appropriate chunk of list based on supplied date. 2-4.) Same as above algorithm, except with geo objects 5.) Use bulk operation to select full tournaments using remaining geo objects' event_ids 6.) Assemble many-to-manys 7.) Return to client Thoughts on this approach? • ODBC: Mapping of literal type names in create table statements

  I was wondering if data types in a a literal "create table" statement, executed over ODBC, are replaced with their database specific counterparts (platform is Windows/.Net/C#). I cannot find this feature in the ODBC docs, and there seems to be no list of literal "ODBC data types". However, I know that this works for Oracle, SQL Server and Access; the following statement is executed correctly, although the type LONGVARBINARY is no native type in all of these systems: CREATE TABLE (MYCOLUMN LONGVARBINARY) However, e.g. for Oracle the mapped native type depends on the used ODBC driver. Is this an undocumented feature? Is there a list of supported type names anywhere? Thanks!

• Efficiency Question for an Ajax App

  Hi, Currently I am dealing with a web application which uses a txt file as a database for testing for now. But we will connect it to a server later on. My question is, if there is a more efficient way to get my objects than the way I am using now. During the page_init I am getting all my objects into a Collection as List, then I am populating the ajax toolkit accordion objects in the page with that. I have some client side buttons which fires callbacks for getting some other objects to populate the accordions in an update panel. And I am using .net Collections too much like dictionary and list, I am wondering if using arrays is more efficient. Could you advise me about how to make this site better and faster ? Is it better or possible to initialize those TravelP objects in javascript at the beginning and use it like that ? Any comments would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

• Can the same CriteriaBuilder (JPA 2) instance be used to create multiple queries?

  This seems like a pretty simple question, but I have not managed to find a definitive answer yet. I have a DAO class, which is naturally querying the database by using criteria queries. So I would like to know if it is safe to use the same CriteriaBuilder implementation for the creation of different queries or do I have to create new CriteriaBuilder instance for each query. Following code example should illustrate what I would like to do: public class DAO() { CriteriaBuilder cb = null; public DAO() { cb = getEntityManager().getCriteriaBuilder(); } public List<String> getNames() { CriteriaQuery<String> nameSearch = cb.createQuery(String.class); ... } public List<Address> getAddresses(String name) { CriteriaQuery<Address> nameSearch = cb.createQuery(Address.class); ... } } Is it ok to do this?

  I love reStructuredText, however the tools that support it are scattered all over the Internet. The official tool list is incomplete and/or outdated, and can be updated only via commit privileges. For some time there was a comprehensive list at the Wikipedia reStructuredText page, but this apparently "may not meet the notability guideline for web content" and is scheduled for removal. So to put it in a question form: What tool support can one expect to find when working with reStructuredText, e.g. text editors, Wiki software, converters to and from reStructuredText etc.?

• CakePHP: find neighbors, order on 'name' or 'order'

  Hi, I have a list of ordered items, ordered according to the int field order. I'm creating a gallery in CakePHP 1.2 that has a prev and next button and those should link to the previous and next item according to their ordering, not according to their id. In order to get this result I've included the 'order' parameter to the find function, and populated it with 'Item.order'=>'DESC'. Still the result is an id ordered list. My question is: what do I do wrong? My controller: $this->Item->id = 16; $neighbours = $this->Item->find('neighbors', array('order'=>array('Item.order'=>'DESC'), 'fields'=>array('id','name')));

  So, right now I've got a number of columns the user can sort by (Name, County, Active) and that's easy but messy. Looks something like this... Select Case e.SortExpression Case "Name" If (isDescending) Then resultsList.OrderByDescending(Function(a) a.Name).ToList() Else resultsList.OrderBy(Function(a) a.Name).ToList() End If Case "County" ... and so on what I would LIKE to do, is something more ... graceful, like this Private Function SortThatList(ByVal listOfStuff As List(Of Stuff), ByVal isDescending As Boolean, ByVal expression As Func(Of Stuff)) As List(Of Stuff) If (isDescending) Then Return listOfStuff.OrderByDescending(expression) Else : Return listOfStuff.OrderBy(expression) End If End Function but it doesn't like the datatype (Of TKey) ... I've tired Func(Of stuff, boolean) (got something in c# that works nicely like that) but can't seem to get this one to do what I want. Ideas? What's the magic syntax?

  I've got a list of frequently used hex colors that I'd like to list under my jPicker bound input text field and I'd like to figure out how to change the value of the jPicker active color without opening the jPicker color selector palette. I've managed to create a function that updates the input field thats bound to the jPicker, but the colors of the background and picker.gif do not update. I'd like to force the background colors to update as if the color was selected from jPicker itself.
