    Current field-of-use restrictions defined in "Oracle Binary Code License Agreement for the Java SE Platform Products" prohibit its use in embedded systems. "General Purpose Desktop Computers and Servers" means computers, including desktop and laptop computers, or servers, used for general computing functions under end user control (such as but not specifically limited to email, general purpose Internet browsing, and office suite productivity tools). The use of Software in systems and solutions that provide dedicated functionality (other than as mentioned above) or designed for use in embedded or function-specific software applications... are excluded from this definition and not licensed under this Agreement. Do these restrictions also apply to OpenJDK and other possible implementations? Is the only way to use Java in such an environment to acquire a separate license from Oracle?

    I'm thinking of developing software for Ubuntu and other related Linux-based distros (like Linux Mint). But currently am at a loss for where to start. Would learning Python be enough/good? And what are the other things I should know about before starting this kind of developing? And will I be able to publish my apps to a software store like Ubuntu store even if I am from outside USA/UK? If not, what are the options I have to make my apps reach the audience? As a lot of users had asked, I intend to build applications only for Linux (I'm thinking of Gnome) that will be a bit business and enterprise oriented. Currently I am an Oracle certified Java developer in J2SE and J2ME. And I know Python a bit.

  • NSURLSession and amazon S3 uploads

    I have an app which is currently uploading images to amazon S3. I have been trying to switch it from using NSURLConnection to NSURLSession so that the uploads can continue while the app is in the background! I seem to be hitting a bit of an issue. The NSURLRequest is created and passed to the NSURLSession but amazon sends back a 403 - forbidden response, if I pass the same request to a NSURLConnection it uploads the file perfectly. Has anyone tried uploading to S3 with this and hit similar issues? I wonder if it is to do with the way the session pauses and resumes uploads, or it is doing something funny to the request..? One possible solution would be to upload the file to an interim server that I control and have that forward it to S3 when it is complete... but this is clearly not an ideal solution!   • Django TemplateSyntaxError only on live server (templates exist)

    I'm getting a strange error that only occurs on the live server. My Django templates directory is set up like so base.html two-column-base.html portfolio index.html extranet base.html index.html The portfolio pages work correctly locally on multiple machines. They inherit from either the root base.html or two-column-base.html. However, now that I've posted them to the live box (local machines are Windows, live is Linux), I get a TemplateSyntaxError: "Caught TemplateDoesNotExist while rendering: base.html" when I try to load any portfolio pages. It seems to be a case where the extends tag won't work in that root directory (???). Even if I do a direct_to_template on two-column-base.html (which extends base.html), I get that error. The extranet pages all work perfectly, but those templates all live inside the /extranet folder and inherit from /extranet/base.html. Possible issues I've checked: file permissions on the server are fine the template directory is correct on the live box (I'm using os.path.dirname(os.path.realpath(__file__)) to make things work across machines) files exist and the /templates directories exactly match my local copy removing the {% extends %} block from the top of any broken template causes the templates to render without a problem manually starting a shell session and calling get_template on any of the files works, but trying to render it blows up with the same exception on any of the extended templates. Doing the same with base.html, it renders perfectly (base.html also renders via direct_to_template) Django 1.2, Python 2.6 on Webfaction. Apologies in advance because this is my 3rd or 4th "I'm doing something stupid" question in a row. The only x-factor I can think of is this is my first time using Mercurial instead ofsvn. Not sure how I could have messed things up via that. EDIT: One possible source of problems: local machine is Python 2.5, live is 2.6. Here's a traceback of me trying to render 'two-column-base.html', which extends 'base.html'.     I'm trying to run hibernate tools in an ant build to generate ddl from my JPA annotations. Ant dies on the taskdef tag. I've tried with ant 1.7, 1.6.5, and 1.6 to no avail. I've tried both in eclipse and outside. I've tried including all the hbn jars in the hibernate-tools path and not.   • "type" Command Not Working As Expected on Git Bash

    The type command, in Linux, returns the location, on the filesystem, of the given file, if it is in the current folder or the $PATH. This functionality is also available through Windows with the Git Bash command line program. The command also returns a file's location given the file without its extension (.exe, .vbs, etc.) However, I have run into what seems like a strange corner case where the file exists on the $PATH but doesn't get returned using the command. I am thinking of buying a new computer soon, so I looked up the method of transferring the license key from one computer to another, in preparation for actually doing this. The method I found mentioned the files slmgr.vbs and slui.exe, both of which reside in the C:/Windows\System32 folder, which is in my $PATH, as usual for a Windows computer. However, these two files aren't showing up when I use the type command. Also, neither gets executed when I call the files as commands without their extensions in Git Bash, and only slmgr.vbs gets executed when I call them with the extensions. Finally, slmgr.vbs is shown when listing the folder's contents in Git Bash, as well, but slui.exe isn't. I thought this might have to do with permissions, and, indeed, both files have very restrictive permissions, as you can see in the pictures below, but they both have the same permissions, which wouldn't explain why one gets executed and the other doesn't when called directly, nor why one file is listed on command line but the other isn't. The unicoded path is: " \\?\c:\Français\", and I would like to concat "*" to this path of type wchar_t (then I will use it as an arg for FindFirstFileW()). I made two test cases of mine, the first is ansi_string() which seem to work fine, the second is unicode_string() - which I don't quite understand how should I concat the additional "*" char to the unicoded path.   • Tridion New UI Preview Site is not reflecting with the changes unless pulished

    I have new UI setup and noticing that when ever I update a page it is not refreshing with the updated changes. I do not see either the page_{sessionId/GUID}.aspx created either. Checked the session preview DB and I see the changes in PAGE_CONTENT table with new rendered content, so seems like session preview is working fine but the Preview site is not able to get the changes and refresh the UI. I have checked all the preview handlers and mappings for .aspx and made sure they are correct in web.config. Any thoughts on why the preview site not showing up the changes?     I am trying to display a rather dynamic list of data in WPF. I have essentially a LineItem class that contains a list of strings and a line type. The line type separates different categories of line items. All line items with the same type should be displayed the same and their data should line up. For example, this list will contain an order summary. And the there will be a line type that represents something with a width and height. The width and height must line up vertically. However, there may be other line types that don't have to line up vertically. I have toyed with the idea of making some kind of UI service class that is injected, but it would still require some pretty detailed UI information from the controller to do it's work.

  • Technology to communicate with someone with expressive aphasia?

    A family member had a stroke a few years back and now has expressive aphasia. She understands what is said to her, is cognitive of what is going on, but cannot express herself. She is able to respond to yes/no questions (do you want to go shopping? are you looking for your earrings?) She is not, however, able to read (English is not her native language and she hasn't read Hindi for decades.) I am the technologist in the family, and I intend to come up with something to help us communicate. The idea is to have some sort of picture book where she can point to what she wants. My first question: does some sort of assistive technology for people with expressive aphasia already exist? These can be hardware or software devices? If not, then such a software doesn't seem difficult to write. My initial thought is to have an interface with pictures - maybe separated by category (food, shopping) - where she can point to an individual picture to indicate what she needs. We could easily add more items with such a software, and we could have an interface where she (or we) could "flip pages". Which suggests that the best solution would use a touch screen rather than a mouse. It would be really difficult to train her to aim a mouse or find keys on a keyboard. We're thinking of maybe getting a tablet and writing some basic software. But tablets computers are expensive and fragile - I'm not sure if it would be able to stand spills or being knocked about in a nursing home. So my next question: what kind of tablet-like devices are out there which I can program on? I don't know anything about hardware, but if there is something then we could special-order it. What would be safe and durable for such a project? We could do something on an iPod or cell phone, but I feel like that interface would be too small. Finally, does anyone here have experience with this kind of assistive technology? Things I might not anticipate when designing such a system? edit I've added a (pretty hefty!) bounty. I'd kinda like to open this question up to any suggestions, comments, and experiences that people might have. This is a pretty real and important project, so while we will (are working on) a solution, any insights would be particularly helpful. Right now the plan is to mount a screen in her room. We'll either teach her to use a trackball or use a touch-screen panel, after seeing what she is able to use with a simple prototype.   • How to deploy a visual studio custom tool?

    Hello. I have a my own custom tool for Visual Studio 2008 SP1. It consists of 5 assemblies: 3 assemblies with code that used heavily in my other projects, 1 assembly-wrapper above VS2008 SDK and assembly with the tool. If I'd debug my tool from visual studio, using "Run external program" option with command line "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" and arguments "/ranu /rootsuffix Exp" all work perfectly. After that I trying to deploy it to my working VS copy, not to experimental hive doing: gacutil /i Asm1.dll for all my assemblies and doing RegAsm Asm1.dll only for assembly with custom tool. Neither of utils prints any error, all work as planned, even registry keys appeared. But my tool don't work even after PC restart. What did I do wrong?     The Situation I am creating a video training site for a client on the RackSpace Cloud using the traditional LAMP stack (RackSpace's cloud has both Windows and LAMP stacks). The videos and other media files I'm serving on this site need to be protected as my client charges money for access to them. There is no DRM or funny business like that, essentially we store the files outside of the web root and use PHP to authenticate user's before they are able to access the files by using mod_rewrite to run the request through PHP. On local test machines it works like a charm. However once deployed to the cloud it stops working. After some debugging it turns out that if a request to the cloud has certain file extensions like .JPG, .PNG, or .SWF (i.e. extensions of typically static media files.) the request is routed to a cache system called Varnish. The end result of this routing is that by the time this whole process makes it to my PHP script the session is not present. If I change the extension in the URL to .PHP or if I even add a query parameter Varnish is bypassed and the PHP script can get the session. No problem right? I'll just add a meaningless query parameter to my requests! Here is the rub: The media files I am serving through this system are being requested through compiled SWF files that I have zero control over. They are generated by third-party software and I have no hope of adding or changing the URLs that they request. Are there any other options I have on this? Update: I should note that I have verified this behavior with RackSpace support and they have said there is nothing they can do about it.

  • Where should I create my DbCommand instances?

    I seemingly have two choices: Make my class implement IDisposable. Create my DbCommand instances as private readonly fields, and in the constructor, add the parameters that they use. Whenever I want to write to the database, bind to these parameters (reusing the same command instances), set the Connection and Transaction properties, then call ExecuteNonQuery. In the Dispose method, call Dispose on each of these fields. Each time I want to write to the database, write using(var cmd = new DbCommand("...", connection, transaction)) around the usage of the command, and add parameters and bind to them every time as well, before calling ExecuteNonQuery. I assume I don't need a new command for each query, just a new command for each time I open the database (right?). Both of these seem somewhat inelegant and possibly incorrect. For #1, it is annoying for my users that I this class is now IDisposable just because I have used a few DbCommands (which should be an implementation detail that they don't care about). I also am somewhat suspicious that keeping a DbCommand instance around might inadvertently lock the database or something? For #2, it feels like I'm doing a lot of work (in terms of .NET objects) each time I want to write to the database, especially with the parameter-adding. It seems like I create the same object every time, which just feels like bad practice.     I have been trying to use Ant to compile and ready a project for distribution. I have encountered several problems along the way that I have been finally able to solve but the solution leaves me very unsatisfied. First, let me explain the set-up of the project and its dependencies. I have a project, lets call it Primary which depends on a couple of libraries such as the fantastic Guava. It also depends on another project of mine, lets call it Secondary. The Secondary project also features some dependencies, for example, JDOM2. I have referenced the Jar I build with Ant in Primary. Furthermore, I believe that including these libraries as class files is bad practice as it could give rise to licensing issues while not packaging them and merely including them in a directory along the build Jar would most probably not (And if it would you could choose not to distribute them yourself). I think my inability to correctly assemble the class path, I always received NoClassDefFoundError for classes or libraries in the Primary project when launching Second's Jar, is that I am not very experienced with Ant. Would I require to specify a class path for both projects? Specifying the class path as . should have allowed me to simply add all dependencies to the same folder as Secondary's Jar, should it not?

The weird thing is that when I put the radialGradient in the DOM, it works. You can see it in here. So how should I do this? This problem is on all browsers. Thank you for your help.
