• How do you manage feature requests and software changes?

  I am a Software Engineer and over the past few years I have become the de-facto software project manager simply because there isn't one. So to keep our sanity in the R&D/Engineering department, customers have become accustomed to coming to me with their requests. I have no experience in this realm so it is my first time acting as a project manager for software projects. I have managed other things but not software. So, how do you manage software projects and mark priorities? Requests come in at infrequent intervals so we very well could be working on something for someone else and then another person comes in with a "rush" job that needs working on. Is it easier to just say First Come, First Serve or is it the person with the most money?

• How can I save state from script in a multithreaded engine?

  We are building a multithreaded game engine and we've encountered some problems as described below. The engine have 3 threads in total: script, render, and audio. Each frame, we update these 3 threads simultaneously. As these threads updating themselves, they produce some tasks and put them into a public storage area. As all the threads finish their update, each thread go and copy the tasks for themselves one by one. After all the threads finish their task copying, we make the threads process those tasks and update these threads simultaneously as described before. So this is the general idea of the task schedule part of our engine. Ok, well, all the task schedule part work well, but here's the problem: For the simplest, I'll take Camera as an example: local oldPos = camera:getPosition() -- ( 0, 0, 0 ) camera:setPosition( 1, 1, 1 ) -- Won't work now, cuz the render thread will process the task at the beginning of the next frame local newPos = camera:getPosition() -- Still ( 0, 0, 0 ) So that's the problem: If you intend to change a property of an object in another thread, you have to wait until that thread process this property-changing message. As a result, what you get from the object is still the information in the last frame. So, is there a way to solve this problem? Or are we build the task schedule part in a wrong way? • SVN Server not responding

  I've been bashing my head against a wall with this one all day and I would greatly appreciate a few more eyes on the problem at hand. We have an in-house SVN Server that contains all live and development code for our website. Our live server can connect to this and get updates from the repository. This was all working fine until we migrated the SVN Server from a physical machine to a vSphere VM. Now, for some reason that continues to fathom me, we can no longer connect to the SVN Server. The SVN Server runs CentOS 6.2, Apache and SVN 1.7.2. SELinux is well and trully disabled and the problem remains when iptables is stopped. Our production server does run an older version of CentOS and SVN but the same system worked previously so I don't think that this is the issue. Of note, if I have iptables enabled, using service iptables status, I can see a single packet coming in and being accepted but the production server simply hangs on any svn command. If I give up waiting and do a CTRL-C to break the process I get a "could not connect to server". To me it appears to be something to do with the SVN Server rejecting external connections but I have no idea how this would happen. Any thoughts on what I can try from here? Our IPCop (?) firewall allows connections from it (and it alone) on port 80 and passes the connection to the SVN Server. • Keyword does not work in dash

  Since the last update of my OS ubuntu 11.10, I am not able to type in the dash. In any other application (like Firefox for this message), the keyboard is working fine, but in the dash "window" of unity (I am not sure what it is called officially), the keyboard is buggy. Sometimes I manage to enter one or two characters, but most of the time nothing appears as if the key-press signal was not received. Before the update, I actually was working with gnome-classic (I had removed unity from oneiric). The update seemed to have reinstalled unity, but something apparently is missing or damaged. Does anybody have a clue about what could be done to repair the dash?

• Sometimes keyboard & touchpad work... sometimes not

  When I first ran Ubuntu from CD on this Dell Inspiron 2650, it worked for about ten to fifteen minutes, then it hung (I was probably trying to do too much at once from a Live CD). The next time, my mouse and keyboard didn't work. I rebooted three times and finally got them working. I then installed Ubuntu alongside Windows XP. After installing, selecting the OS in GRUB worked, but my touchpad and keyboard were again not working. I rebooted, and they worked. (I fortunately had a USB mouse with which to reboot.) Booting Ubuntu and then rebooting to enable my keyboard and touchpad has become a routine ever since. Often several reboots are required; at one point I had to reboot over a dozen times in a row before getting a session where everything worked properly. (My installation has been in place for about three days a week now.) I've looked around for a device manager equivalent to no avail. Sometimes the hardware is properly detected, and sometimes it's not. Once or twice I've had the keyboard detected properly but the touchpad not. Plugging in my wireless card also sometimes requires a plug, unplug, and plug again to get it working. So is there some solution? I'm without an Internet connection at home, and this "laptop" is really a wall wart on my desk, so suggestions for packages may take a while to test. Xorg logs I captured two three four sample Xorg logs: one from a startup where the devices worked; one from when they didn't; one from a session where Ubuntu thought my touchpad was a normal mouse; and one from a session where my keyboard worked but the touchpad didn't. • Getting the Dell XPS 16 Synaptics touchpad to work after hibernation in Ubuntu.

  I am currently experimenting with using Ubuntu as a my main OS instead of Windows 7. So far, pretty much everything is working fine, except for an issue that I am having with my touchpad. I have a Dell XPS 16 (1640) with a Synaptics touchpad. It works out of the box, but it seems that it stops working after returning from hibernation mode. This problem has also been addressed in an earlier bug, but judging from this bugreport, it should be fixed by now. I am running the 2.6.35-23-generic-pae kernel. Any ideas?

• After how much line of code a function should be break down?

  While working on existing code base, I usually come across procedures that contain Abusive use of IF and Switch statements. The procedures consist of overwhelming code, which I think require re-factoring badly. The situation gets worse when I identify that some of these are recursive as well. But this is always a matter of debate as the code is working fine and no one wants to wake up the dragon. But, everyone accepts it is very expensive code to manage. I am wondering if are any recommendations to determine if a particular Method is a culprit and needs a revisit/rewrite , so that it can broken down or polymophized in an effective manner. Are there any Metrics (like no. of lines in procedure) that can be used to identify such segment of code. The checklist or advice to convince everyone, will be great!

  I've got: (1) Linux box (Arch linux to be precise, but that doesn't really matter) (2) Ethernet connection on it (say, eth0) (3) Socks proxy on a remote site (say, remote :port), which can be accessed through (2) (4) Wireless card on local linux box (say, eth1) So, the task is: create a wireless access point using (4) on local site (1) in such a way that all connections from it will go through proxy (3). E.g., when one simply connects to that AP (well, there should be DHCP or something for that) and goes to serverfault.com, all the traffic goes through that SOCKS proxy. • Are there any sFTP clients that support a proxy that uses NTLM authentication?

  The title pretty much summarizes the question. We have deployed an sFTP server that needs to be accessed from our client's MS Windows Pc's that reside within a restricted local area network. The only way they can get out for their Intranet is to use an HTTP proxy that requires NTLM authentication. From what I understand all open-source sFTP clients (FilleZilla,WinSCP,etc) do NOT support NTLM authentication (Because of legal issues). I know that there are workarounds to this (installing a local proxy at the machine that understands NTLM) but this would break all sorts of security policies of our client. So my question is : Does anyone know of any sFTP client that supports a NTLM Proxy?

• I'm hoping to start an online supermarket and needs advice on open source shopping cart software and applications..

  I have been researching on both open source software and off-the-shelf software for an online supermarket project in Africa. I have now narrowed by search to X-cart and the PHP based PrestaShop shopping carts. My plan is to acquire an open source shopping cart either by purchasing or as a free open source cart and hire a local developer to customize it to our local needs. I have been doing the demo for x-cart for three weeks now and had thought it might work best for us but after going through the 600 page manual and I'm concerned with how far it can be localized. Yesterday i was looking at the possible Prestashop free open source cart and i seem to like the back-end. Didn't like the back-end for Magento much but from reviews conducted by third-parties they seem to recommend it. I'm now wondering whether i should have a developer start the whole project from scratch, or use an open source software such us PrestaShop or get x-cart which can then be customized. Note that my store will have thousands of products and services including groceries and so i want something that can handle upto 500,000 products and over. Kindly advice. 93276

• Cisco PIX 515 doesn't seem to be passing traffic through according to static route

  Ok, so I am having a spot of bother with a Cisco PIX515, I have posted the current running config below, now I am no cisco expert by any means although I can do basic stuff with them, now I am having trouble with traffic sent from the outside to address: 10.75.32.25 it just doesn't appear to be going anywhere. Now this firewall is deep inside a private network, with an upstream firewall that we don't manage. I have spoken to the people that look after that firewall and they say they they have traffic routing to 10.75.32.21 and 10.75.32.25 and thats it (although there is a website that runs from the server 172.16.102.5 which (if my understanding is correct) gets traffic via 10.75.32.23. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as to me it should all just work, but its not (obviously if the config is all correct then there could be a problem with the web server that we are trying to I'm backing up to a local NAS and I'm getting this error: Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options Check your backup Windows Backup could not create a zip file. This could be because the drive that Windows is installed on does not have enough space or it could be a temporary error. Make sure you have at least 400 MB of free space and try again. • IIS cannot access itself

  We are on a corporate network that uses ISA and I am having issues trying to not have requests go through ISA. I have IIS7 on my local Windows 7 machine that has websites and a service layer. The websites access the service layer using a xxxx.servicelayer.local address that is set up in my HOSTS file to point to 127.0.0.1. I have Windows Firewall client which I have disabled. I have tried both adding this address into IE so that it does not go through ISA and also disabled this section altogether. When the website (which is actually IIS making the request to itself) tries to access the service layer I receive an ISA error that proxy authentication has failed. Considering that everything I can see to configure is set to not go through the proxy, ISA, I cannot see how this is actually going through the proxy and giving this error. Is there something within Windows 7 that forces the proxy setting, some sort of caching or similar?

  Hello postgre experts. I am completely new to the game but need the following: I Create a new role with login. Let's say: User1 I then create a Database 'User1Database' and set User1 as the owner. User1 has no rights to do anything except for access. Now when I connect using User1 it somehow has access to all databases. I then learned I neeed to write something in here. User1 should have global access to User1Database and absolutely no access to anything else. What lines do I need to add to my pg_hba file?   I'm emulating Ubuntu on my mac, and I use it as a server. I've installed lighttpd + Drupal and the following configuration section requires a domain name in order to make clean urls to work. • Has anyone managed to install Office Webapps on SharePoint 2010, on Windows 7 ?

  I've installed SharePoint 2010 as a development environment on my Windows 7 x64 environment (notes here) and would like to install Office Web Apps onto it also. However, when trying to install (following this link), I get an error saying that Web roles aren't installed. The error message in the log file is: Start C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe -whatif -inputpath C:\Users\nickh\AppData\Local\Temp\PRE1.tmp.XML Error: Failed to start process for file: C:\Windows\system32\ServerManagerCmd.exe arguments: -whatif -inputpath C:\Users\nickh\AppData\Local\Temp\PRE1.tmp.XML ErrorCode: 2(0x2). Which is effectively saying that ServerManagerCmd is not found. It isn't on my machine as it is deprecated and replaced by Powershell functions, but is on Server 2008 R2. I've tried copying that over and it just fails to run. Is there a way to get Office WebApps installed on Win7 ? Is there a way to get a working version of ServerManagerCmd.exe on a Windows 7 x64 environment ? Many thanks

• Surface normal to screen angle

  I've been struggling to get this working. I simply wish to take a surface normal and convert it to a screen angle. As an example, assuming we're working with the highlighted surface on the sphere below, where the arrow is the normal, the 2D angle would obviously be PI/4 radians.   Hi, CASE 1: I have a Ubuntu machine with name midhun.local I can access this in http://midhun.local/svn ... But its can't access from other machines(both Windows and Linux) through this host name. But it works with http://192.168.1.192/svn CASE 2: I have a another machine(windows) having the host-name myname:555 In this case i can access https://myname:555/svn from other windows machines with the same URL. But if am trying to access from the a Linux machine it will not work with the same URL instead of that https://192.1.168.111:555/svn will work. How can I solve the problem. I need to access via the same name from cross domain. How is it possible in LAN Thanks in advance!!

• Cant install wine1.5 13.04

  So I tried to install wine 1.5 a few times, I got 1.4 installed, and 1.6 installed oddly enough, I completely removed and purged all wine and still nothing. I installed ia32-lib and still nothing, tried installing from synaptic, ubuntu software center, and apt-get method. I get this error from apt-get in the terminal Reading package lists... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. All the machines are within a LAN, but 1- Machine B can connect to A as well as C 2- Machine A i.e.my pc, it can only connect to B and not C Now to use internet, i do the following: ssh -X [email protected] Then i type firefox and i use the firefox of machine B with proxy setings as 172.16.24.3:3128 Instead of using firefox of B, i want to use my local firefox. Is there a way through which i can connect to C via B and use my local firefox for browsing

• GLIBC_2.8 not found

  As a newbie I seem to have messed up my upgrade leaving my system in a very unstable state. I attempted an upgrade from 8.04LTS which ended in an error about libc and kernel upgrades. I tried to upgrade the kernel but am now unsure if that worked, because when I retried my dist-upgrade there was a lot of errors about pre-dependencies and leaving packages un-configured. Now I have a system that answers almost every command with: /lib/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.8' not found (required by /lib/libselinux.so.1) I probably should try a complete re-installation, but I'm investigating if there is any possibility of getting a working glibc so that I at least can have some commands working to ensure that my backups are recent etc. before doing the clean install. not even 'ls' works without saying "glibc_2.8 not found".

• How do I fix gnome shell themes?

  This is my fifth full format and install of Ubuntu in under a month. I finally have my Gnome 3 desktop working again, but again, the Gnome shell themes is not select-able. I have asked the question of how to fix this common issue before, but I have seen no positive resolution. Does anybody know of a simple fix? This is a common issue and I have seen hundreds of postings related to it, but other users only seem to get half-way answers also and it goes unresolved. Would it be advisable to completely purge Gnome desktop and reinstall? If so how would I do this? I cannot use any extensions if the shell is not working, so I am desperately seeking resolution for the issue. Thanks in advance.
