Personal project in Java

My first project in java is going to be a program (eventually I have to create a GUI interface but for now CLI would do) to keep track of my books (something similar to what libraries have only a simpler). I need to be able to insert, update, remove, show all books, update, search(by name or author or date). For the design I was thinking one main class Library which will have all of the above as methods that connect to the db and retrieve the data. Is this approach ok? I realize it's simple but it's my first real project and I would appreciate a little feedback. Also, is it too soon to consider reading up on design patterns and database design ?

Retrieving related data in the Symfony Admin Generator

I have a problem with the Admin Generator. The Table of Pages have the column sf_guard_user_id. The rest of the table looks as this part of the generator.yml in the line display, list: title: Pages display: [=title, sfGuardUser, views, state, privacy, created_at, updated_at] sort: [created_at, desc] fields: sfGuardUser: { label: Author } created_at: { label: Published, date_format: dd.MM.y } updated_at: { label: Updated, date_format: dd.MM.y } table_method: retrieveUserList Now the sf_guard_user_id is been replaced and the username ist displayed. Don't get me wrong, that works fine. But how can I get other variables from the sfGuarsUser relation? When I only add salt or another variable to display I get this, Unknown record property / related component "salt" on "simplePage" But why?

I want to make dynamic web service invoker in JSF with CXF. But when I load this simple code I get error. If you did that and find nothing, the mistake might be due to the fact that you use some special web-containers which do not support registering context-listeners via TLD files and a context listener is not setup in your web.xml. Are these tables respect the 3NF Database Normalization?

What if 2 authors work together for the same title? The column Addresss should have it's own table? When a reader borrows a book, I make an entry in BORROWING table. After he returns the book, I delete that entry and I make another one entry in HISTORY table. Is this a good idea? Do I brake any rule? Should I have instead one single BORROWING table with a DATE_OF_RETURNING column?

I've got a "JSP Document" ("JSP in XML") nicely formatted and when the webpage is generated and sent to the user, some linebreaks are removed. Now the really weird part: apparently the "main" .jsp always gets all its linebreak removed but for any subsequent .jsp included from the main .jsp, linebreaks seems to be randomly removed (some are there, others aren't). For example, if I'm looking at the webpage served from Firefox and ask to "view source", I get to see what is generated. So, what determines when/how linebreaks are kept/removed? This is just an example I made up... Can you force a .jsp to serve this: <body><div id="page"><div id="header"><div class="title">... or this: <body> <div id="page"> <div id="header"> <div class="title">... ? I take it that linebreaks are removed to save on bandwidth, but what if I want to keep them? And what if I want to keep the same XML indentation as in my .jsp file? Is this doable?

Incorporating MIT/X11 licensed code into project

I'm rewriting a small MIT-licensed program in C, and I intend to copy a segment from it (though not verbatim) that prints usage information and such things. The programs are going to behave, for the most part, the same, but the implementations are going to be much different. What is the best way to incorporate this code into my program, whether it's licensed under Apache 2, GPLv2/3, or under the MIT license? My guess is that for the first two listed I'd just add the original authors name to the NOTICE file along with relevant information and paste the license header as a comment above the derived code, and for the latter I'd just add the original author's copyright statement above my own.

accessing a static property via COM

is it possible to access a static property of a COM object without creating an instance of the object? my situation is this: i have an unmanaged application (written in delphi). this application exposes a COM-based plugininterface. until now i only wrote managed plugins in c#. plugins provide their info (name, author, ..) via a static property that returns an instance of PluginInfo (which implements IPluginInfo). this static property i can access on the managed plugins using http://managedvcl.com. now i want to write unmanaged plugins on the same interface. i can load them using: plug := CreateComObject(TGuid) as IMyPlugInterface; and they run, but i don't know how to read out their PluginInfo. so the question again is: is there another way than implementing IPluginInfo in the plugin-class and only accessing the info after i have created an instance of the plugin?

Question about spring manning-in-action

I saw people asking about best book for learning spring, and I came across manning.spring in action was recommended most of the time so I decided to give it a go. The thing is the author offers some pretty reasonable explanations, puzzle by puzzle it gets in your head, than you just need to code it and you're done, you get it(this is how I work don't know about the others). When it comes to the code its very disapointing, I went trought the Knight example like 2 or 3 times by now and I see its incorrect in the book, I mean its hard already for people eager to learn and why not a note somewhere in the book like pseudo-code or something. The knight example in the first chapter is missing two classes QuestFailedException and HolyGrail I mean other people must have noticed this, why is everyone recommending this book without saying at least it has some errors(like many others do), was anyone actually been able to compile and this first chapter example?

Getting data from array of DataSet objects returned from web service

I have a web service that I want to access when it is added as a web reference to my C# project. A particular method in the web service takes a SQL query string and returns the results of the query as a custom type. When I add the web service reference, the method shows up as returning DataSet[] instead of the custom type. This is fine provided I can still somehow access the data returned from the query within those DataSet objects. I ran a particular query that should return 6 rows; I got back a DataSet[] array with 6 elements. However, when I iterate over those DataSet objects, none of them has any tables (via the Tables property on the DataSet). What gives? Where is my data? The web service is tested and works when I use it as a data source in a Report Builder 2.0 report. I am able to send an XML SOAP query to the web service and get back XML results containing my data.

How do you save images to a Blackberry device via HttpConnection?

My script fetches xml via httpConnection and saves to persistent store. No problems there. Then I loop through the saved data to compose a list of image url's to fetch via queue. EDIT Following skaffman's advice, I took a look at the generated .java files and the "main" one doesn't have lots of out.write but not a single one writing tabs nor newlines. Contrary to that file, all the ones that I'm including from that main .jsp have lots of lines like: out.write("\t...\n"); So I guess my question stays exactly the same: what determines how tabs/space/linebreaks are included/removed in the output?

viewstack causing error 1065 variable not defined issue?

I've got an flex application where I have a left side TREE control and a viewstack on the right and when someone selects the tree it loads the named viewstack based on the hidden node value of the XML of the tree. But it's throwing a error 1065 variable not defined on a viewstack which worked on the last browser refresh/reload. It's not related to a particular viewstack from what I can tell it just seems to throw the error on certain render events. Multicore solr on Ubuntu 10.04 working for anyone?

Following instructions from the two sites below, I've installed tomcat6 and solr 1.4 http://gist.github.com/204638 https://wiki.fourkitchens.com/display/TECH/Solr+1.4+on+Ubuntu+9.10+and+CentOS+5 I have successfully got it up and running on a server running 9.04 with multicore support, but on the 10.04 I can't seem to get it to work. I am able to reach localhost:xxxx/solr/ on the 10.04 box and see a single link to the Solr Admin, but following the link takes me to a 404 page with the following output: /solr/admin/ HTTP Status 404 - missing core name in path The requested resource (missing core name in path) is not available I am also unable to access /solr/site1/ as I would except - it similarly returns a 404  <cores adminPath="/admin/cores"> <core name="site1" instanceDir="site1" /> <core name="site2" instanceDir="site2" /> </cores>  <Context docBase="/var/solr/solr.war" debug="0" privileged="true" allowLinking="true" crossContext="true"> <Environment name="solr/home" type="java.lang.String" value="/var/solr" override="true" /> </Context>

Vista 64-bits development tools

Well, okay. There's Visual Studio 2008 and Embarcadero Delphi/Studio that are both able to create 64-bits .NET applications for Vista. And of course a lot of 32-bits applications will run on 64-bits Vista. If not, it's always possible to install VMWare to create a virtual 32-bits Windows XP system to run 32-bits applications. So, plenty of options. But what I would like to see is a list of true 64-bits applications for Windows Vista and better. So if you know any useful 64-bits product, please share! (Especially compilers that generate native 64-bits code.) Tools would basically be anything that would make development a bit easier. Thus, debugging tools, image processing tools to create icons and bitmaps, hex editors to check the contents of binary files, XML editors to change XML files, etc. The tools from SysInternals, for example, seem to provide 64-bits versions or even support 64-bits systems natively. But how about all those other editors, viewers, browsers and other tools that we developers like to use? A 64-bits version of the Norton Commander/Midnight Commander or other file managers would be nice too. And with compilers, how about COBOL/ForTran/ADA/SmallTalk/Lisp/Whatever compiler/languages for Vista? I would just like to see a complete list of anything useful for 64-bits development.

Specific programming text editor for simple open/close editing

I'm looking for very specific text editor: Closes on ESC, no project management or tabs Syntax highlighting - preferably with color themes (e.g. can apply different color themes without changing C# coloring definition) or, at least, can load/save themes; support for C/C#/XML/HTML/JavaScript/etc - common MS/.NET world - out of box Configurable keys, or: Shift-Tab shifts blocks XML/HTML auto-completion support - well, optional I use synplus plugin for Total Commander currently, but it has few drawbacks (e.g. crashes sometimes ;-), no auto-completion, etc). Basically I want fast Visual-Studio-like editor that I open, do edits, and then close using ESC. I remember I tried Notepad++, etc - most of them open files in tabs, don't close on ESC... - that is, behave like IDE. At least I've just downloaded Notepad++, it doesn't close on ESC even if I setup keybindings to do so. Autocompletion is optional (though it is to be simple as just tags completion), what I really look for is closing on ESC, not getting in the way with all the tabs and IDE-like, and good coloring. Plus shift-tab is must have for blocks manipulation. Update: any open-source one that I can easily tweak to close on ESC? ;-) Seems like ESC (and reasonable color highlighting) is the core requirement. I've just tried many editors - Programmer's Notepad, E, Crimson, etc - I can't set any of them to close on ESC. Any external tool to close selected program on ESC? ;-) UPDATE: Hm, found an awesome utility for my latest thought: http://www.autohotkey.com. Easy to setup to close any window on ESC (as well as many other tricks). Seems like the most tough requirements is gone - I can use ANY text editor ;-)

When an interface extends TheWidgetView.MyStyle, the of the widget consumer needs to define all the styles listed in that parent interface. I've seen some widget libraries have the widget's constructor take in a ClientBundle as parameter, which I suppose could apply to CssResource. Although, I'm not sure how I'd pass in this style object in a constructor invoked by UIBinder. Thanks much in advance!

Glassfish: Defining Custom JNDI Names for Session Beans

Background: Want to use GF3 in development, where as actual SIT, UAT, and production is using WAS. Problem: With the remote session beans everything is good to go, as GF3 gives a non-standard JNDI name, which is same as what WAS suggests, i.e. an absolute class name. Now for the local session beans WAS use the same absolute class name but with the prefix, i.e. ejblocal:. Whereas GF3 doesn't give any non-standard JNDI name for local session beans. GF3 came up with only portable name, java:global/..I need to find a way so I can use the same names for both. I am using EJB 3.0, WAS 7.9, and Glassfish 3. Don't have any xml confiuration for ejbs. Using Spring to inject the bean in Struts2 actions. With remote interfaces both servers are okay and agreed on a single convention, but for locals they differ. Is there any solution for this? Or just sun-ejb-jar.xml will solve it? Thanks.

Policy file error while loading images form facebook

Hi, I making a game leaderboard on facebook. I'm not using connect but working inside the canvas. When I try to load the images from facebook it gives me the following error. I am importing the right class though. UPDATE: I am loading the images from a different domain say , calling func http://fahim.com images are from http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/v22941/254/15/q652310588_2173.jpg something ( I have made sure the pictures are static do not require a facebook login or anything , they are just user public profile pictures)

Find first item inside angular brackets after occurrence of other item, using RegEx, in C#

I have an xml-like text, in which I would like to find the item that occurs in the first occurrence of a certain pattern: typically: ... <PropertyGroup><name>true</name></PropertyGroup><PropertyGroup>.... .... Could also be ... <PropertyGroup> <name> true</name> </PropertyGroup> ... <PropertyGroup> ... In the above, I need to extract the "name". My initial assumption was that all occurrences were to be in one line, and I wrote my code using string properties, but it is very difficult o take in consideration every possibility, and only RegEx can save me. I just don't know how to write it... I Have started with something like this: Regex regex = new Regex("(?<=<PropertyGroup>#)<+"); Match matches = regex.Matches(Text)[0]; MessageBox.Show(matches.ToString()); I think this finds the first item after a <PropertyGroup>, but I don't know how to make it get the item within the angular brackets... (which may be after one or more newlines, and/or spaces). I know that there are utilities for parsing xml, but I am looking for something simple to insert in a c# program Can someone please help me ? Permission denied (maybe missing INTERNET permission) when calling web service

I'm trying to use .net SOAP web service with ksoap2 lib. Example from http://www.vimeo.com/9633556 shows how to do it correct. Below the code from that example. everything shoud work ok, but when I try to do a call inself (httpTransport.call) I get "Permission denied (maybe missing INTERNET permission)" exception. Moreover, I don't see in the Application info window among permissions the internet permission alert. Tried this on emulator and Google phone. Will be very appreciated if somebody could help with it.
