• Implications of Java 6 End of Public Updates for EBS Users

  The Support Roadmap for Oracle Java is published here: Oracle Java SE Support Roadmap The latest updates to that page (as of Sept. 19, 2012) state (emphasis added): Java SE 6 End of Public Updates Notice After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. For enterprise customers, who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 or older versions, long term support is available through Oracle Java SE Support . What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users? EBS users fall under the category of "enterprise users" above.  Java is an integral part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack, so EBS users will continue to receive Java SE 6 updates after February 2013. In other words, nothing will change for EBS users after February 2013.  EBS users will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6. These Java SE 6 updates will be made available to EBS users for the Extended Support periods documented in the Oracle Lifetime Support policy document for Oracle Applications (PDF): EBS 11i Extended Support ends November 2013 EBS 12.0 Extended Support ends January 2015 EBS 12.1 Extended Support ends December 2018 Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients? No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but currently remains optional. JRE 6 will be available to Windows users to run with EBS for the duration of your respective EBS Extended Support period.  Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients.  The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite with JRE 7 (for desktop clients accessing EBS Forms-based content) is in its final stages.  If you plan to upgrade your EBS desktop clients to JRE 7 when that certification is released, you can get a head-start on that today. Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops The upgrade to JRE 7 will be highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite. Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. For more details, see "Appendix B: Static vs. Non-static Versioning and Set Up Options" in Notes 290801.1 and 393931.1. Applying Updates to JRE 6 and JRE 7 to Windows desktops Auto-update will keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with JRE 7 installed. Auto-update will only keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with both JRE 6 and 7 installed.  JRE 6 users are strongly encouraged to apply the latest Critical Patch Updates as soon as possible after each release. The Jave SE CPUs will be available via My Oracle Support.  EBS users can find more information about JRE 6 and 7 updates here: Information Center: Installation & Configuration for Oracle Java SE (Note 1412103.2) The dates for future Java SE CPUs can be found on the Critical Patch Updates, Security Alerts and Third Party Bulletin.  An RSS feed is available on that site for those who would like to be kept up-to-date. What will Mac users need? Oracle will provide updates to JRE 7 for Mac OS X users. EBS users running Macs will need to upgrade to JRE 7 to receive JRE updates. The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite with JRE 7 for Mac-based desktop clients accessing EBS Forms-based content is underway. Mac users waiting for that certification may find this article useful: How to Reenable Apple Java 6 Plug-in for Mac EBS Users Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers? No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but will be optional for EBS application tier servers running on Windows, Linux, and Solaris.  You can choose to remain on JDK 6 for the duration of your respective EBS Extended Support period.  If you remain on JDK 6, you will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JDK 6. The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite with JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers on Windows, Linux, and Solaris as well as other platforms such as IBM AIX and HP-UX is planned.  Customers running platforms other than Windows, Linux, and Solaris should refer to their Java vendors's sites for more information about their support policies. • 2 google analytics profiles for 2 sections of the same site

  Ive got a website which for the most part is a portfolio, there is another section of the site mysite.com/micro-site which ranks extremely well for it chosen term / topic, and brings in lots of traffic, but actually has little to do with the core business. It was really made as a piece of content - in the same way sites like this are - http://chrome.com/campaigns/rollit For the main site i use 1 Google analytics profile and set of tags, for the micro site i have a completely different analytics profile and set of tags. The main reason ive done this is because the traffic stats and insights for the micro site are essentially just noise, its nice to have the traffic but they dont help when reading analytics reports, so if they were combined my analytics reports would be a mess. Is there any disadvantage / negatives of doing this ?

(i am using category and tag interchangeably) i am using the following linking for this module sitename.com/blog sitename.com/blog/category/category-name-slug/ - will list all ringtones of that category/tag sitename.com/blog/title/name-slug-of-the-ringtone/ - this will display the details and a download link in all page at the left i display the category/tag . This is how i have formed the url structure. it will be user friendly i hope yet will it be seo friendly? Please hint if i am missing something or other ways to improve. meanwhile i am browsing the net to get more information on linking content (categorizing) and to find best ways for the user and search engine.

• How to preseed 12.10 desktop when the ubuntu-desktop package is missing?

  I have been trying to use a preseed file to do PXE booting of a 12.10 desktop. Upon the first boot, I was greeted by a terminal with login prompt. Surprised, I checked the /var/log/installer/syslog but didn't find a trace of desktop installation. Feeling curious, I double-checked the content of the loop mounted iso file, and realized that the ubuntu-desktop package that existed up to 12.04.1 is no longer available.   Recently we spoke with Bill Binko, Technology Consultant at Dell Perot Systems, about a high volume web-based content delivery system they implemented for a client with Oracle In-Memory Database Cache. Their client needed to respond to ~1 billion hits (web requests) per day, but hadn't been able to support this load. Oracle In-Memory Database Cache allowed for multiple & complicated queries to take place without ever hitting the disk...providing sub-millisecond response time and ability to manage much higher high volumes of data. Old System: Old SQL Server Database, over 300 servers, difficult to maintain. New System: One Oracle Database 11g instance, multiple Oracle RAC nodes, backed up by Oracle Data Guard, and Oracle In-Memory Database Cache to cut query response times by 10x. • Process Centric Banking: Loan Origination Solution

  There is an old proverb that goes, "The difference between theory and practice is greater in practice than in theory". So, we keep doing numerous "Proof of Concepts" with our own products on various business cases to analyze them deeply, understand and explain to our customers. We then present our learnings as they happened. The awareness of each PoC should help readers increase the trustworthiness of the results coming out of these PoCs. I present one such PoC where we invested a lot of time&effort.  Process Centric Banking : Loan Origination Solution Loan Origination is a process by which a borrower applies for a new loan and the lender processes that application. Loan origination includes the series of steps taken by the bank from the point the customer shows interest in a loan product all the way to disbursal of funds. The Loan Origination process is relevant for many kind of lenders in Financial services: Banks, Credit Unions, NBFCs(Non Banking Financial Companies) and so on. For simplicity sake, I will use "Bank" as the lending institution in the rest of my article.  Loan Origination is one of the core processes for Banks as it is the process by which the it creates assets against which the Institution earns most of its profits from. A well tuned loan origination process can affect the Bank in many positive ways. Banks have always shown great interest in automating the loan origination process for the above reason. However, due the constant changes in customer environment, market dynamics, prevailing economic conditions, cost pressures & regulatory environment they run into lot of challenges. Let me categorize some of these challenges for you Customer Environment Multiple Channels: Customer can use any of the available channels (Internet Banking, Email, Fax, Branch, Phone Banking, ATM, Broker, Mobile, Snail Mail) to perform all or some of the activities related to her Visibility into the origination process: Expect immediate update on the status of loan processing & alert messages Reduced Turn Around Time: Expect loans to be processed with least turn around time Reduced loan processing fees: Partly due to market dynamics the customer expects the loan processing fee to be negligible Market Dynamics Competitive environment:  The competition keeps creating many variants of loan products to attract customers, the bank needs to create similar product variants with better offers to attract customers or keep existing ones Ability to migrate loans from one vendor to another: It has become really easy for retail customers to move from one bank to the other given the low fee of loan processing and highly attractive offers. How does the bank protect it's customer base while actively engaging with potential customers banking with competitor banks Flexibility to react to market developments: Market development greatly influence loan processing, underwriting, asset valuation, risk mitigation rules. Can the bank modify rules and policies, the idea is not just to react to market developments but to pro-actively manage new developments Economic conditions Constant change in various rates and their implications on the rates and rules applied when on-boarding a loan: How quickly can the bank apply changes to rates offered to customers when the central bank changes various rates Requirements of Audit by the central banker: Tough economic conditions have demanded much more stringent audit rules and tests. The banks needs to produce ready reports(historic & operational) for audit compliance Risk Mitigation: While risk mitigation has always been a key concern for the bank, this is the area where the bank's underwriters & risk analysts spend the maximum time when processing a loan application. In order to reduce TAT the bank cannot compromise on its risk mitigation strategies Cost pressures Reduce Cost of processing per application: To deliver a reduced loan processing fee to the customer, the bank needs to keep its cost per processing loan application low. Meet customer TAT expectations while reducing the queues and the systems being used to process the loan application: The loan application could potentially be spending a lot of time waiting in the queue for further processing. Different volumes & patterns of applications demand different queuing algorithms. The bank needs to have real-time visibility into these queues and have the flexibility to change queuing algorithms at runtime  Increase the use of electronic communication and reduce the branch channel usage: Lesser automation leads not only leads to Increased turn around time, it also impacts more costs to reach out to customers The objective of our PoC was to implement a Loan Origination Solution whose ownership lies with the bank and effectively meet the challenges listed above. We built a simple story board for the solution We then went about implementing our storyboard using Oracle BPM Suite, Webcenter Content : Imaging. The web UI has been built on ADF technolgies, while the integration with core-services has been implemented using the underlying SOA infrastructure. The BPM process model is quite exhaustive can meet all the challenges listed above to reasonable degree. A bank intending to implement an end-to-end Loan Origination Solution has multiple options at it's disposal. It can Develop a customer Loan Origination Application from scratch: Gives maximum opportunity to build what you want but inflexible to upgrade and maintain. Higher TCO in long term Buy a Packaged application & customize it: Customizing a generic loan application can be tedious and prove as difficult as above. Build it using many disparate & un-integrated tools: Initially seems easier than developing from scratch. But, without integrated tool sets this is not a viable approach either or A solution based on a Framework: Independent Services and Business Process Modeling provide decoupled architecture that is flexible. We built this framework end-to-end with processes the core process of loan origination & several sub-processes such as Analyse and define customer needs, customer credit verification, identity check processes, legal review process, New customer registration & risk assessment.

• Removing existing filtered pages from Google's index: noindex / 301 / canonical to non-filtered page?

  I've decided to remove some of my site's pages from the Google index to focus more of the indexed pages on higher quality pages. The pages I'm going to remove are already in the index. These removed pages are filtered pages which will continue to exist, I just don't want them in the google index because they add little quality to the same page without any filter selected. I've added in webmaster tools specification of narrow for the parameters that set these filters, but it doesn't seem this changes anything in how he handles these pages. So I'm considering three options: Adding <meta name="robots" content="noindex" /> to the html header of these filtered pages 301 to the non-filtered page that contains the most similar information and will remain in the index Canonical tag. Which I'm not sure is exactly the mainstream use case, as these aren't really the same pages. Which should I use?

• Effective template system

  I'm building a content management system, and need advice on which theming structure should I adopt. A few options (This is not a complete list): Wordpress style: the controller decides what template to load based on the user request, like: home page / article archive / single article page etc. each of these templates are unrelated to other templates, and must exist within the theme the theme developer decides if (s)he want to use inner-templates (like "sidebar", "sidebar item"), and includes them manually where (s)he thinks are needed. Drupal style: the controller gives control to the theme developer only to inner-templates; if they don't exist it falls back internally to some default templates (I find this very restrictive) Funky style: the controller only loads a "index.php" template and provides the theme developer conditional tags, which he can use to include inner-templates if (s)he wants. Among these styles, or others what style of template system allows for fast development and a more concise design and implementation.

  Consider one feed like this: http://feeds.feedburner.com/codinghorror It has the entire content inside the description tag of the feed, so you don't need to access the website to read the post. Now I have the problem of creating an interface for a feed like this on a desktop client. What's the best way to render the text in a pleasant way to the user? My first thought was to parse the entire HTML as if I was a web browser, but that looks really hard to do in a satisfying way. Are there any better (faster) alternatives? Rephrasing: how a desktop rss client such as feeddamon parses the input to display it nicely? Does it have a web browser inside it?

• Is Perforce as good as merging as DVCSs?

  I've heard that Perforce is very good at merging, I'm guessing this has to do with that it tracks changes in the form of changelists where you can add differences across several files in a single blow. I think this implies Perforce gathers more metadata and therefore has more information to do smarter merging (at least smarter than Subversion, being Perforce centralized). Since this is similar to how Mercurial and Git handle changes (I know DVCSs track content rather than files), I was wondering if somebody knew what were the subtle differences that makes Perforce better or worse than a DVCS like Mercurial or Git.

  With Jason Lee's NetBake plugin (https://bitbucket.org/jdlee/netbake), when you've installed JRuby and then the Asciidoctor gem, you're good to go to use Asciidoctor with NetBeans IDE. New Asciidoc files can be created, which have a Source view... ...and a Visual view. The current content of the text editor is parsed by the Asciidoctor gem and the resulting HTML is displayed in a JEditorPane: Awestruct support is also part of the NetBake plugin, with a new project type and other related features. An Options window is included for configuring the plugin: I've been in touch with Jason and we're discussing separating the Asciidoctor parts from the Awestruct parts and then putting them seperately as plugins on the NetBeans Plugin Portal.

• How to use American English spelling dictionary in Firefox?

  My Firefox spellchecker was complaining this morning that I spelled 'neighbor' in the American English style, not the British English style ('neighbour'). Same is true for color (colour), analyze (analyse), etc. I've checked in the edit-preferences-content-language tab, and en-us is selected. I also found this link here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1013043 Suggesting that there's some kind of system panel I can use to ensure that I've got the right language, but I can't see where that is (I guess that's for an older Ubuntu that let people get to system settings). So either the dictionary for Firefox for en-us is corrupted, just a copy of the British English dictionary, or somehow the setting isn't propagated properly. How can I get the American dictionary back?

• Why not AJAX'ify entire websites?

  Is there any solid reasoning as to why sites shouldn't be developed with ajax functionality that loads major parts of each part (assuming there are elements like the header, navigation etc that remain the same)? Surely it would be less resource-intensive since the server wouldn't have to serve content that appears on every page, benefiting both the host and end-user. Answer the question taking into consideration: The sites javascript behaviour degrades gracefully in every instance For my question I'm talking about new sites where this behaviour could be implemented rather from the off, so it doesn't technically cost any money - we're not returning to a finished product to implement it.

• Why is CSS3 doing animations?

  Like what the title says, why are there animations in CSS3? With basis from the "rule" of separation of concerns, HTML is the content, CSS is the style, and JavaScript is the interactive component. And by interactivity, one can conclude that anything moving due to any interaction, user or non-user triggered should be covered by JavaScript, not CSS. So why did they make CSS3 capable of doing animations? Doesn't it breach the rule, which is separation of concerns? Is there anything I missed that makes animations qualified to be classified as styles rather than interaction?

  we're trying to get rid of a this question : would it be possible to setup more than one value in a custom variable in Google Analytics, at page level ? Eg: _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar',3,'Tag','Custom Variables',3]); We'd like to track most popular tags on a web site who publishes news, articles and stuff. Contents are categorized (each content belongs to one category) and tagged (1 or more tags for each article). So, we'd like to apply this code: _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar',3,'Tag','Custom Variables',3]); _gaq.push(['_setCustomVar',3,'Tag','Google Analytics',3]); in a page that shows an article with these two tags assigned.   In my website I changed the directory name "vehicles-cars" to "vehicles-cars-for-sale". When I tried to redirect using a wild card redirect from my old directory name to new directory name in my web hosting cPanel account, I get an error every time I open pages from that directory: this webpage has a redirect loop The website is php. The problem is that that I have lots of pages with the old directory indexed in Google and they are getting duplicate content. I really need some advice on what to do with this problem. • Drupal to Wordpress migration scope for SEO

  I'm not sure if this is the appropriate forum, please let me know if it's not (or if there is a better one) and I'll withdraw the question. I'm migrating a drupal site to wordpress and I was wondering what the concerns are with respect to preserving google rank, etc. while assuming the page content is somewhat similar. I've set up 301 redirects, and created a new site map, but the surrounding html / menus, etc are different. Is this considered a concern and are there a best practice for this kind of migration?
