• Front End Developer v/s PHP-MySQL Engineer

  Hello, I want to decide which of this would be a more viable career option? I am ready to quit my current job and hence I am looking for new opportunity. Current job is maintainence and no more active development. My current role is of a PHP/MySQL Developer. I very well understand web-programming and am comfortable with RoR/Sinatra/Zend MVC/JQuery/JSON manipulation, etc. I understand MySQL InnoDB/MyISAM engine and how one differs from the other, etc. Basically, I could very well manage the deployment of a web-application end-to-end including configuration of Apache/Nginx servers, memcache,etc On the other hand, I am being offered a Sr.Front End Web developer that would require me to extensively write HTML/CSS crossbrowser/crossplatform compliant code. I very well understand XHTML/CSS/Box model etc. I would be working on Drupal for the management of websites. While I understand continuing to work on server-side technologies would always be a good career path, how would the role of Core front-end developer turn out to be? If I take this opportunity, will I eventually get a chance to focus onto UCD, HCI, Information Architect,etc. So are these kinda roles possible if I focus on front end development? No offenses to the Front end developers, just want to understand if this is something I want to gain a mastery over. I have 2 yrs of industry experience after graduating with a MS-Computer Science. Although, I have a CS degree, if I were to take uip serious front-end role; I could probably go back and take up some design/HCI/UI courses. Please advise.

• Best full text search for mysql?

  We're currently running MySQL on a LAMP stack and have been looking at implementing a more thorough, full-text search on our site. We've looked at MySQL's own freetext search, but it doesn't seem to cope well with large databases, which makes it far too slow for our needs. Our main requirements are: speed returning results simple updating of index In addition to the above, our "nice to have"s are: ideally not something that requires adding a module to MySQL plays nicely with PHP (majority of our dev work done using PHP) There seems to be quite a few healthy open-source projects to add fast, reliable full-text search to MySQL, so I'm basically looking for recommendations/suggestions on what you've found to be the most useful product out there, easiest to set up, etc. So far, the list of ones we've been starting to play around with are: Sphinx, C++ based, used by craigslist, thepiratebay Lucene, Java-based Apache project, powers zeoh.com and zoomf.com Solr, Java-based offshoot of Lucene, used to power searches on Digg, CNet & AOL Channels Are there any better ones out there that we haven't come across yet? Can you recommend / suggest against any of the options we've gathered so far? Thanks for your help! Update @Cletus suggested Google's Custom Search Engine. We recently trialled this on a couple of projects, and it's an almost-perfect fit for our needs. The problem is that entries on our site are updated quite regularly, and unfortunately the speed at which entries go in/get updated in Google's index was just too slow and erratic for us to rely on, even with the addition of sitemaps and requested crawl rate changes.

• load class not in classpath dynamically in web application - without using custom classloader

  I am developing a web application. The web application generates java classes on the fly. For example it generates class com.people.Customer.java In my code, I dynamically compile this to get com.people.Customer.class and store in some directory say repository/com/people/Customer.class which is not on the classpath of my application server.My application server(I am using WebSphere Application Server/Apache Tomcat etc) picks up the classes from the WEB-INF/classes directory. The Classloader would use this to load the classes. After compilation I need to load this class so that it becomes accessible to other classes using it after its creation. 4.When I use Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader().loadClass(com.people.Customer) obviously the Classloader is not able to load the class, since its not on the classpath(not in WEB-INF/classes). Due to similar reasons, getResource(..) or getResourceAsStream(..) also does not work. I need a way to : Read the class Customer.class maybe as a stream (or any other way would do) and then load it. Following are the constraints: I cannot add the repository folder to the WEB-INF/classes folder. I cannot create a new Custom ClassLoader. If I create a new ClassLoader and this loads the class, it will not be accessible to its parent ClassLoader. Is there any way of achieving this? If not this, in the worse case, is there a way of overriding the default class loader with a custom class loader for web applications the same classloader should be used to load applications throughout entire lifecycle of my web application. Appreciate any solution :)

• In wicket, combine wicket:link with IAuthorizationStrategy

  Hi everybody. I use an IAuthorizationStrategy in wicket to limit access to certain pages. However, I also use html menus like this one: <div class="siteMenu"> <wicket:link> <a href="Page1.html" class="siteMenuLink"> <wicket:message key="pages.page1.title" /> </a> <a href="Page2.html" class="siteMenuLink"> <wicket:message key="pages.page2.title" /> </a> <a href="Page3.html" class="siteMenuLink"> <wicket:message key="pages.page3.title" /> </a> </wicket:link> </div> , that are automatically picked up and expanded using the wicket:link mechanism (like here: http://wicket.apache.org/examplenavomatic.html ). However, the IAuthorizationStrategy may not allow one or more of these target pages, so I may end up either with lots of links that lead to "permission denied" pages or lots of deactivated links (i.e. em tags or the like), neither of which is pretty. I could of course write an IComponentInstantiationListener that checks all BookmarkableLinks to see whether their target is accessible through the IAuthorizationStrategy and renders them invisible otherwise, but I wonder if there is an out-of-the-box solution to this problem. For clarification: I only use the isInstantiationAuthorized() method of IAuthorizationStrategy.

• Jetty startup delay

  I'm trying to figure out what would be causing a 1 minute delay in the startup of Jetty. Is it a configuration problem, my application, or something else? I have Jetty 7 (jetty-7.0.1.v20091125 25 November 2009) installed on a server and I deploy a 45MB ROOT.war file into the webapps directory. This is the only webapp configured in Jetty. I then start Jetty with the command: java -DSTOP.PORT=8079 -DSTOP.KEY=mystopkey -Denv=stage -jar start.jar etc/jetty-logging.xml etc/jetty.xml & I get two lines of output right after doing this: 2010-03-07 14:20:06.642:INFO::Logging to StdErrLog::DEBUG=false via org.eclipse.jetty.util.log.StdErrLog 2010-03-07 14:20:06.710:INFO::Redirecting stderr/stdout to /home/zing/jetty-distribution-7.0.1.v20091125/logs/2010_03_07.stderrout.log When I press the enter key, I get my command prompt back. Notice the 1 minute long pause between the 3rd and 4th lines. What is Jetty doing at this point? What other things could be going on? It doesn't even look like it has started my Spring initialization yet. Note that I checked my /tmp directory to see if it was simply the time to unpack my war file, but the file had been completely unpacked even at the start of this 1 minute delay.

  I have converted most of my Apache HTTPd mod_rewrite rules over to nginx's HttpRewrite module (which calls PHP-FPM via FastCGI on every dynamic request). As I haven't gotten a response from this yet, I am also unsure if this will override my PHP parser which is defined with location ~ \.php {}, which is included before these rewrite rules. Bonus points if I can solve the parsing issues without the need to use a new rule for each number of route properties.

• Passenger: "Missing these required gems redgreen"

  Hello, total ruby newbie, trying to setup a Rails/MongoDB application on Mac OS X Snow leopard. Installed Ruby 1.9.1 and RubyGems 1.3.7, which ruby and which gem point to the same directory. I'm using the Snow Leopard built-in apache and Passenger 2.2.11. I'm using the rails template from the mongo-site which seems to work okay overall. The exact error that passenger gives me is: /Users/User/Sites/feuerapp/vendor/rails/railties/lib/rails/gem_dependency.rb:119:Warning: Gem::Dependency#version_requirements is deprecated and will be removed on or after August 2010. • How to use an OSGi service from a web application?

  I'm trying to develop a web application that is going to be launched from a HTTP OSGi service, this application needs to use other OSGi service (db4o OSGi), for what I need a reference to a BundleContext. I have tried two different approaches to get the OSGi context in the web application: Store the BundleContext of the Activator in an static field of a class that the web service can import and use. Use FrameworkUtil.getBundle(this.getClass()).getBundleContext() (being this an instance of MainPage, a class of the web application). I think that first option is completely wrong, but anyway I'm having problems with the class loaders in both options. In the second one it raises a LinkageError: java.lang.LinkageError: loader constraint violation: loader (instance of org/apache/felix/framework/ModuleImpl$ModuleClassLoader) previously initiated loading for a different type with name "com/db4o/ObjectContainer" Also tried with Equinox and I have a similar error: java.lang.LinkageError: loader constraint violation: loader (instance of org/eclipse/osgi/internal/baseadaptor/DefaultClassLoader) previously initiated loading for a different type with name "com/db4o/ObjectContainer" The code that provokes the exception is: ServiceReference reference = context.getServiceReference(Db4oService.class.getName()); Db4oService service = (Db4oService)context.getService(reference); database = service.openFile("foo.db"); The exception is raised in the last line, database class is ObjectContainer, if I change the type of this variable to Object exception is not raised, but It's not useful as an Object :)

• Mac, PDFKit, PDF/X

  I'm in need of generating and viewing PDF/X-1a. After spending quite some time I came to the conclusion that the only way (hopefully someone will prove me wrong) to achieve this is to use Cocoa. More context: I need to generate PDF/X-1a, that is, all the fonts embeded, spot colors, overprint, ... preferably from Python. But the only libraries which support such things are iText and perhaps and Apache FOP. The first one could be used with Jython, which is ok but not optimal. But then, I simply could not find any viable viewer. Poppler, xpdf, Sumatra, mupdf, ghostscirpt - all of them - just cannot handle large CMYK pdfs, lots of text, ... I really would like to use open sourced libraries but unfortuntatelly the only option I see right now is to buy Mac as I saw one could print (Save-as) to built-in PDF printer under PDF/X conformance and I expect Preview to be comparable, if not better, to Acrobat. But I'm not sure if is it even possible to programmatically access the MacOS libraries responsible for generating PDF? I'm asking because I heard not everything from MacOS is available via public API... (And what Python goes, I thought I could use PyObjC..?) Any others ideas are of course very welcomed!

• Eclipse - How can I change a 'Project Facet' from Tomcat 6 to Tomcat 5.5?

  (Eclipse 3.4, Ganymede) I have an existing Dynamic Web Application project in Eclipse. When I created the project, I specified 'Default configuration for Apache Tomcat v6' under the 'Configuration' drop down. It's a month or 2 down the line, and I would now like to change the configuration to Tomcat 'v5.5'. (This will be the version of Tomcat on the production server.) I have tried the following steps (without success): I selected Targeted Runtimes under the Project Properties The Tomcat v5.5 option was disabled and The UI displayed this message: If the runtime you want to select is not displayed or is disabled you may need to uninstall one or more of the currently installed project facets. I then clicked on the Uninstall Facets... link. Under the Runtimes tab, only Tomcat 6 displayed. For Dynamic Web Module, I selected version 2.4 in place of 2.5. Under the Runtimes tab, Tomcat 5.5 now displayed. However, the UI now displayed this message: Cannot change version of project facet Dynamic Web Module to 2.4. The Finish button was disabled - so I reached a dead-end. I CAN successfully create a NEW Project with a Tomcat v5.5 configuration. For some reason, though, it will not let me downgrade' an existing Project. As a work-around, I created a new Project and copied the source files from the old Project. Nonetheless, the work-around was fairly painful and somewhat clumsy. Can anyone explain how I can 'downgrade' the Project configuration from 'Tomcat 6' to 'Tomcat 5'? Or perhaps shed some light on why this happened? Thanks Pete

  Hi All, I am deploying a Django project on apache server with mod_python in linux. I have created a directory structure like: /var/www/html/django/demoInstall where demoInstall is my project. In the httpd.conf I have put the following code. <Location "/django/demoInstall"> SetHandler python-program PythonHandler django.core.handlers.modpython SetEnv DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE demoInstall.settings PythonOption django.root django/demoInstall PythonDebug On PythonPath "['/var/www/html/django'] + sys.path" </Location> It is getting me the django environment but the issue is that the urls mentioned in urls.py are not working correctly. In my url file I have mentioned the url like: (r'^$', views.index), Now, in the browser I am putting the url like : http://domainname/django/demoInstall/ and I am expecting the views.index to be invoked. But I guess it is expecting the url to be only: http://domainname/ . When I change the url mapping to: (r'^django/demoInstall$', views.index), it works fine. Please suggest as I do not want to change all the mappings in url config file. Thanks in advance.

• How to create an SaaS Application?

  I don't know how else to say it so I'm just going to explain my ideal scenario and hopefully you can explain to me how to implement it... I'm creating an application with the Zend Framework that will be hosted with DreamHost. The application will be hosted on its own domain (i.e. example-app.com). Basically, a user should be able to sign up, get their own domain sampleuser.example-app.com or example-app.com/sampleuser which points to, what looks like their own instance of the app, which is really a single instance serving up different content based on the url. Eventually, I want my users to be able to create their own domain (like foobar.com) that points to sampleuser.example-app.com, such that visitors to foobar.com don't notice that the site is really being served up from example-app.com. I don't know how to do most of that stuff. How does this process work? Do I need to do some funky stuff with Apache or can this be done with a third party host, like DreamHost? Update: Thanks for the advice! I've decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my hosting plan to utilize wildcard subdomains. It's cheaper than I was expecting! I also found out about domain reseller programs, like opensrs.com, that have their own API. I think using one of these APIs will be the solution to my domain registration issue.

  Does anyone know if this subversion "bug" has been dealt with? https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/subversion/tags/1.6.9/www/faq.html#windows-access-denied I'm getting occasional "Access Denied" errors on Windows. They seem to happen at random. Why? These appear to be due to the various Windows services that monitor the filesystem for changes (anti-virus software, indexing services, the COM+ Event Notification Service). This is not really a bug in Subversion, which makes it difficult for us to fix. A summary of the current state of the investigation is available here. A workaround that should reduce the incidence rate for most people was implemented in revision 7598; if you have an earlier version, please update to the latest release. Currently I am experiencing this same behavior in version 1.5.6 when I try and do a SVN switch (I have suspected McAfee as the culprit for a while and when I saw this I feel it validates my suspicions). I read through the link given but it seems pretty old, so I didn't know if this FAQ was just outdated and the issue has actually be resolved. Thanks for any help.   I've never used distributed caches/DHTs like memcached, jboss cache, ehcache, etc. I'm wondering which, if any, is appropriate for my use. First, I'm not doing web applications (as most of these project seem to be geared towards web apps). I write servers (Order Management Systems actually) for financial trading firms. The servers themselves are not too complicated. They need to receive information (market data, orders, executions, etc.) rout them to their destination while possibly transforming some of these messages. I am looking at these products to solve the following problems: * Safe repository of the state of the server. I'd rather build the logic of my application as a bunch of transformers (similar to Apache Camel) and store the state in a 'safe' place * This repository should be distributed: in case one of these data stores crashes, one or two more should be up and I should be able to switch to them seamlessly * This repository should be fast. Single digits milliseconds count here, in other words, systems which consume/process this data are automated systems, not humans clicking on links. This system needs to have high-throughput and low latency. By sending my data outside the process, I am necessarily slowing performance, but I am trying to balance absolute raw speed and absolute protection of data. * This repository should be safe. Similar to the point about several on-line backups, this system needs to write data to disk (potentially more than one disk). I'd really like to stop writing my own 'transaction servers.' Am I correct to be looking into projects such as jboss cache, ehcache, etc.? Thanks

• Auto switching databases from a rails app gracefully from the ApplicationController?

  I've seen this post a few times, but haven't really found the answer to this specific question. I'd like to run a rails application that based on the detected request.host (imagine I have two subdomains points to the same rails app and server ip address: myapp1.domain.com and myapp2.domain.com). I'm trying to have myapp1 use the default "production" database, and myapp2 requests always use the alternative remote database. Here is an example of what I tried to do in Application controller that did not work: class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base helper :all before_filter :use_alternate_db private def use_alternate_db if request.host == 'myapp1.domain.com' regular_db elsif request.host == 'myapp2.domain.com' alternate_db end end def regular_db ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection :production end def alternate_db ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection( :adapter => 'mysql', :host => '...', :username => '...', :password => '...', :database => 'alternatedb' ) end end The problem is when it switches databases using this method, all connections (including valid sessions across the different subdomains get interrupted...). All examples online have people controlling database connectivity at the model level, but this would involve adding code all over my application. Is there some way to globally switch database connections on a per-request basis in the manner I'm suggesting above WITHOUT having to inject code all over my application? The added complexity here is I'm using Heroku as a hosting provider, so I have no control at the apache / rails application server level. I have looked at solutions like dbcharmer and magicmodels, but none seem to show examples of doing it in the manner that I'm trying to. Thanks for any help!

It seems that a dependency defined under the DependencyManagement can be used in its child modules without sepcify the version.For example: A parent project(Pro-par) define a dependency under the dependencyManagement: <dependencyManagement> <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>junit</groupId> <artifactId>junit</artifactId> <version>3.8</version> </dependency> </dependencies> </dependencyManagement> Then at the child of Pro-par, I can use the junit : <dependencies> <dependency> <groupId>junit</groupId> <artifactId>junit</artifactId> </dependency> </dependencies> However I wonder if it is necessary to define the junit at the parent pom? Why not define it directly at the needed module?

• Developing a rich internet application

  Hello, I have been a desktop developer for a few years mostly doing object oriented stuff. I am trying to branch out into web development, and as a hobby project trying to put a web application together. I have been reading quite alot of information, but I still can't seem to decide on the path to take and would really like some advice. Basically, I want to build something like this: http://mon.itor.us/ I have found this as well: http://www.trilancer.com/jpolite/#t1 But so far it is of little use as I am trying to grasp Javascript. I have been using visual studio for that, is that a good IDE for this tye of thing or should I try expression blend? Jpolite seems to do everything with javascript, which seems kind of cool, but I if I want to make a chart inside a widget that connects to a database, do I need something more? Is this where ASP.NET comes in? I am familiar with .NET, but if I use ASP.NET for my website, do I have to host it on IIS and windows server as opposed to Apache since mono is still being ironed out? Because that would cost more, so would PHP be a better choice? Also, for charting these guys as well as google seem to use flex: http://www.google.com/finance I have found this: http://www.reynoldsftw.com/2009/03/javascript-chart-alternatives/ Would that be sufficient to implement something like google fiance purely in javascript or is there a good reason they use flex?
