• How does a single programmer make a game?

  I have always been a software developer, but lately I've been wanting to get into games. The only thing stopping me is the fact that I'm a programmer, not an artist. I've made some simple stuff, Tetris, 2D chess things like that but I can't do much art and that's really what holds me back. Now the problem is, I've yet to go to college so most commercial projects wouldn't accept me even to work for free and learn a bit especially with my lack of experience in games and any indie projects I've looked into really have an issue with responding to people interested, or actually completing (or starting really, most don't get past the ideas on paper) the project they want to do. I've looked around locally for artists, anyone who can do modeling, textures or animating or even anyone with some ability to make some more advanced 2D assets to get something like a side-scrolling RPG or something but haven't been able to find anyone. So how do you guys do it? Do I really just have to wait until I can go to college to see if I like working with games or is there some way I can get art (for free, anything I do is just going to be for fun so I don't want to have to sink money into it) and just start messing around on my own? Or am I just having bad luck and not looking in the right places for other people interested in having me help? I'm not looking for anything in particular, just something to fill some time with and see if I like making games. If not, well I'll go back to my software projects. I just have one more year of highschool and I'd like to try a few different areas before I go to college.

  I always have fun producing the Arch2Arch podcasts, but the latest batch was all that and a bag of chips, since I was required to do absolutely no preparation and very little talking, and since the conversation was reminiscent of those I’ve had with various architects (you know who you are) in various watering holes: free-ranging, extemporaneous, and far, far from dull. The three most recent programs were recorded during a virtual mini meet-up of architects back in February.  You’ll find more detail here, but in a nutshell, I invited several previous Arch2Arch panelists to join me on Skype to talk about whatever was on their minds.  The resulting conversation yielded the three latest programs. • postgresql creating and managing users

  I've tried a few times to get postgresql running on a couple of different linux boxes, but I've always ended up binning it and going back to MySQL because I can't get my head around how to create and manage users. This time around, I've actually gotten as far as being able to log in with my own account, but I created the account with the createuser command and it has a different password to my actual user account. What I'd like to be able to do is log in as me to create databases, users and assign database permissions, but then have an account that is separate and doesn't have an account on the server to use with my web app. Does anyone have a good step-by-step guide for complete morons that goes through creating users and assigning access to various databases in postgresql?

• How to redirect domain to new server?

  I've got a domain registered with a hosting company who I no longer wish to use. I'm happy for them to keep managing my domain, but I want my domain to point to my new (better) server which i've just bought and set up. I know my new server's IP address and Nameservers, What do I need to do in my domain management control panel to make it point to my new server? Change the "A" record to the new IP? Change the nameservers to my new hosts nameservers? Is that it? Are there no other record on either server which need changing? I always get confused by who needs to do what when it comes to domains... Thanks, Hugh

• PDF form created in Libre Office - trouble with form fields and font sizing

  I am trying to create a PDF Form using LibreOffice. I can create the form elements and export as PDF. However, the form fields are giving me problems. The text in these fields always centers on the bottom, and often the text you input is cut off at the bottom. I found that if I make the fields larger, the text no longer cuts off, but the field is exceptionally large with lots of space above the text. I have made an odt (source) and a pdf (export) file to show what I'm running into. I tried a number of different fonts and sizes, but to make things easier, I made the field names all "field1" so that once you fill out one entry, all fields show as filled in. http://ytnoc.net/files/sampleapp.odt http://ytnoc.net/files/sampleapp.pdf My main question is how do I make form fields that don't cut off the text without having to make the fields way oversized? • Reformatting and version control

  Code formatting matters. Even indentation matters. And consistency is more important than minor improvements. But projects usually don't have a clear, complete, verifiable and enforced style guide from day 1, and major improvements may arrive any day. Maybe you find that SELECT id, name, address FROM persons JOIN addresses ON persons.id = addresses.person_id; could be better written as / is better written than SELECT persons.id, persons.name, addresses.address FROM persons JOIN addresses ON persons.id = addresses.person_id; while working on adding more columns to the query. Maybe this is the most complex of all four queries in your code, or a trivial query among thousands. No matter how difficult the transition, you decide it's worth it. But how do you track code changes across major formatting changes? You could just give up and say "this is the point where we start again", or you could reformat all queries in the entire repository history. If you're using a distributed version control system like Git you can revert to the first commit ever, and reformat your way from there to the current state. But it's a lot of work, and everyone else would have to pause work (or be prepared for the mother of all merges) while it's going on. Is there a better way to change history which gives the best of all results: Same style in all commits Minimal merge work ? To clarify, this is not about best practices when starting the project, but rather what should be done when a large refactoring has been deemed a Good Thing™ but you still want a traceable history? Never rewriting history is great if it's the only way to ensure that your versions always work the same, but what about the developer benefits of a clean rewrite? Especially if you have ways (tests, syntax definitions or an identical binary after compilation) to ensure that the rewritten version works exactly the same way as the original?

• How can I read a portion of one Minecraft world file and write it into another?

  I'm looking to read block data from one Minecraft world and write the data into certain places in another. I have a Minecraft world, let's say "TemplateWorld", and a 2D list of Point objects. I'm developing an application that should use the x and y values of these Points as x and z reference coordinates from which to read constant-sized areas of blocks from the TemplateWorld. It should then write these blocks into another Minecraft world at constant y coordinates, with x & z coordinates determined based on each Point's index in the 2D list. The issue is that, while I've found a decent amount of information online regarding Minecraft world formats, I haven't found what I really need: more of a breakdown by hex address of where/what everything is. For example, I could have the TemplateWorld actually be a .schematic file rather than a world; I just need to be able to read the bytes of the file, know that the actual block data starts always at a certain address (or after a certain instance of FF, etc.), and how it's stored. Once I know that, it's easy as pie to just read the bytes and store them.

• Apache on Windows random long wait times

  I have a development machine with Apache installed as a service on Windows. The installation is fresh out of the box, with no changes to configuration aside from adding the PHP module. From day one, I've had a problem that looks like this: Essentially, Apache is freezing for about 11 seconds before replying on random requests. This appears to happen more frequently when the host hasn't been connected to in a while, but this is not always the case. I've eliminated MySQL, PHP, and the specific application; this long wait problem will occur even when loading a static file such as favicon.ico. Thus, the only factor remaining is Apache, which is freezing for consistently around 10-11 seconds before replying. The problem is not the DNS problem that many people point to; as you can see, the DNS lookup is instant, and the problem occurs both on localhost and 127.0.0.1. Thanks for the time.

  I'm setting up a server and trying to configure the Apache. It only needs to work as a frontend to Tomcat. • In vim, prevent caret moving back when I leave edit mode?

  In vim, if I enter and leave edit mode without doing anything, the caret ends up one character to the left. And if I enter and leave append mode, the caret moves forwards and then backwards. Any way to configure vim to leave the caret alone in these cases? Ideally I just want to always enter append mode, but without moving the caret when I enter or exit the mode. (Currently I usually use insert mode because it doesn't mess up my caret position upon entry. That is, except when I need to append to the end of the line, in which case I swear at vim for behaving in such an archaic fashion, press Esc and enter append mode.)

• Should I use a config file or database for storing business rules?

I am currently programming a web app that has some models that have properties that can only be from a set of values, e.g. (not actual example as the web app data confidential): light-type = sphere / cube / cylinder The light type can only be the above three values but according to TPP I should always code as if they could change and place their values in a config file. As there are several incidents of this throughout the app, my question is: Should I store possibly values like these in: a config file: 'light-types' = array(sphere, cube, cylinder), 'other-type' = value, 'etc = etc-value a single table in a database with one line for each config item a database with a table for each config item (e.g. table: light_types; columns: id, name) some other way? I bound it to file /Users/taw/bin/new_term, which contains: #!/bin/sh exec osascript -e 'tell application "Terminal" to do script "cd ."' • How to handle monetary values in PHP and MySql?

  I've inherited a huge pile of legacy code written in PHP on top of a MySQL database. The thing I noticed is that the application uses doubles for storage and manipulation of data. Now I came across of numerous posts mentioning how double are not suited for monetary operations because of the rounding errors. However, I have yet to come across a complete solution to how monetary values should be handled in PHP code and stored in a MySQL database. Is there a best practice when it comes to handling money specifically in PHP? Things I'm looking for are: How should the data be stored in the database? column type? size? How should the data be handling in normal addition, subtraction. multiplication or division? When should I round the values? How much rounding is acceptable if any? Is there a difference between handling large monetary values and low ones? Note: A VERY simplified sample code of how I might encounter money values in everyday life: $a= $_POST['price_in_dollars']; //-->(ex: 25.06) will be read as a string should it be cast to double? $b= $_POST['discount_rate'];//-->(ex: 0.35) value will always be less than 1 $valueToBeStored= $a * $b; //--> any hint here is welcomed $valueFromDatabase= $row['price']; //--> price column in database could be double, decimal,...etc. $priceToPrint=$valueFromDatabase * 0.25; //again cast needed or not? I hope you use this sample code as a means to bring out more use cases and not to take it literally of course. Bonus Question If I'm to use an ORM such as Doctrine or PROPEL, how different will it be to use money in my code.

• Working with the ADF DVT Map Component

  The map component provided by the ADF Faces DVT set of components is one that we are always ending up using in key demos - simply because it is so nice looking, but also because it is quite simple to use. So in case you need to show some geographical data, or if you just want to impress your manager, here is a little video that shows you how to create two types of maps. The first one is a color themed map - where you show different states with different colors based on the value of some data point there. The other is a point theme - basically showing specific locations on the map. For both cases I'm using the Oracle provided mapviewer instance at http://elocation.oracle.com/mapviewer. You can find more information about using the map component in the Web User Interface Developer's Guide here and in the tag doc and components demo. • AWS:EC2:: Could not connect FTP client?

  My Server OS: Amazon Linux I am trying to set up ftp. I have: Installed vsftpd open port 20-21 open port 1024 - 1048 Basically, I followed every of these steps Start vsftpd service (the status indicate [ok]) I use filezilla for my ftp client. • Stop UAC/Secure Desktop from dimming the screen

  I like the concepts of UAC and the "Secure Desktop" in Windows 7, but I don't like the dimming of the Secure Desktop to prompt for Admin credentials (or OK button to get clicked). However, dimming goes so far that my monitor regularly goes into PowerSaver mode, which is annoying (as it takes another 10 seconds for it to wake up), and might harm the monitor: two weeks after switching from XP to Windows 7, my 30" monitor stayed black and it had to get replaced. The web is full of tips how to turn off dimming, but that will always also turn off the "Secure Desktop". Is there a way to present the Secure Desktop without dimming? Or with a different visual effect to show that it is the Secure Desktop? EDIT: To clarify, I'm not looking for a way to disable dimming by disabling Secure Desktop (as is done by lowering the UAC level). I want to keep both UAC and Secure Desktop.

• unable remove/reinstall libxss1:amd

  Whenever I try to install anything (software-center or apt-get) I get an error report stating that libxss1:amd is in a "very bad inconsistent state" (translated from german) and that I should reinstall it. That would not bother me much but I am never sure if the stuff I'm trying will be working in the end. It really resists from being repaired apt-get install, apt-get remove, apt-get -f install, and all the usual suspects - nothing works. It always comes to: dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von libxss1:amd64 (--configure): Paket ist in einem sehr schlechten inkonsistenten Zustand - Sie sollten es nochmal installieren, bevor Sie die Konfiguration versuchen. Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von: libxss1:amd64 E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I posted the error as is, since my translation might not be exact. But I guess you can figure from my text. I found out that this file is the X screen saver. Maybe I should kill it before handling that file. If thats so, than please tell me how. I have a problem with Configuring DHCP Reservations: in the client, ipconfig: Address Leases is: 192.168.188.20 http:/i160.photobucket.com/albums/t171/dungttvn/123.png then in the client computer: ipconfig /release but when i config the Reservations with the fix IP address is: 192.168.188.100 in the sever computer (throught vmnet1) and in the client computer: ipconfig /renew ... it's not work: the address lease is still 192.168.188.20 always! http:/i160.photobucket.com/albums/t171/dungttvn/456.png Someone help me! =.= Many Thanks!

• vim on Windows -Turn syntax highlighting OFF

  I have downloaded Vim 7.4 on Windows 7 64 bit, and would like to turn off syntax highlighting. I have been using Vim for a long time on Unix, so I know to place "syntax off" in my vimrc. However, even though "syntax off" is in my vimrc, for some reason when I edit my vimrc the syntax highlighting is always on. I have deleted every other vimrc on my system (listed in the output of :version) except for my $HOME\_vimrc, but the syntax highlighting is still there (even after creating new cmd's). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Hosting and domain registrations for multiple clients

  I am finally getting regular work desiging, developing, and deploying websites for small businesses and individuals. So far the websites utilize single-user content management systems, so the websites create, as far as I know, minimal load on the shared servers. I have always required that each of my clients purchase annual shared hosting at Dreamhost. For domain registration, I ask that they register with Dreamhost, but some already have a registered domain elsewhere and this is fine with me. I do this so the billing issues are the client's responsibility, not mine. My question is: Since I can register unlimited domains and connect them to my one shared hosting account at Dreamhost, should I not be requiring clients to individually pay for shared hosting and a domain? Should I actually be paying for one hosting account and then hosting all of my client's websites on that account? As I said before, I currently have each client buy their own hosting, because I feel that, for example, if there is high traffic to their site, there would be less a chance of the site going down than if their site was hosted with many others on one account. I am famous for being long-winded, please let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks!

• Is there a way to control two instantiated systemd services as a single unit?

  I've got a couple python web services I'm trying to run on a Fedora 15 box. They're being run by paster, and the only difference in starting them is the config file they read. This seems like a good fit for systemd's instantiated services, but I'd like to be able to control them as a single unit. A systemd target that requires both services seems like the way to approach that. Starting the target does start both services, but stopping the target leaves them running. Here's the service file: [Unit] Description=AUI Instance on Port %i After=syslog.target [Service] WorkingDirectory=/usr/local/share/aui ExecStart=/opt/cogo/bin/paster serve --log-file=/var/log/aui/%i deploy-%i.ini Restart=always RestartSec=2 User=aui Group=aui [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target And here's the target file: [Unit] Description=AUI [email protected] [email protected] After=syslog.target [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target Is this kind of grouping even possible with systemd?

• How do I fix this error? Windows server 2003 the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022)

  Opening one of the programs from the user desktop I get the above Aplication error. It is a proram stored on the server and then the icon put on the users desktop (this is how I was told to do it) but it does not run the application. I don't know anything about group policies etc and can just about manage to add users in the active directory and that is it. We just have a folder which we drop the program icons into. Any ideas? I must be doing something wrong as it doesn't always show up on their desktop either. What is the simplest way to do this? Thanks

  My Nod32 have been catching something that is apparently identified as Python/Lesta.A worm. No matter how many times I tell Nod32 to delete and quarantine the file, it always re-appear, the situation will repeat about 3-4 times a day. This thing has been creating a folder called "pamela" in one of my drives, it sometimes also creates a "xxx.folder" file, which Nod32 identifies as "Exploit/CodeBase virus". I have Googled, and done pretty much everything related to this: a full scan in safe mode with no networking turned on, and also ran Ad-Aware, SpyBot, SpyHunter, ComboFix and cleaned the registry. Any idea how I can completely get rid of this annoying virus/worm?

• Can I group rows to get sum using excel

  I have a spreadsheet with 2 cols of importance. Date, and number. I can't always predict the number of rows or the date, but what I would like to do is print out the sum of the numbers for each date. For example, there might be 5 rows for Dec-7: 200, 111 and Dec-6: 222,533,100. I am tying to create a list which would show Dec-6: 855, Dec-7: 311. I believe a Pivot Table is what I want but I can't quite figure out how I need to configure it to show what I want. If anyone knows of a guide I could look at that would be fantastic!
