• Dual displays not working - NVidia - Ubuntu 12.04 - Second Monitor - Two Screens

  Graphics Card: NVidia 460 GTX. Driver: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) I have one DVI monitor, an old Dell LCD from 2005, and one VGA monitor, an Asus ML238H from 2010 whose HDMI port broke. The Asus is plugged into my graphics card's primary monitor slot and is the better monitor even though it is VGA but my computer defaults to the Dell. This happens when I boot as well; the loading screens, the motherboard brand image, etc. are all displayed on the Dell monitor until Windows loads. Then both monitors work. The same thing happened when I booted up Ubuntu 12.04 but I did not see the second monitor when the log-in screen popped up, nor did I when I logged in. I went to System Settings/Displays and my Asus monitor is not an option. I clicked Detect Displays and the Asus is not detected. I looked at the other questions regarding NVIDIA drivers and recalled my problems with Ubuntu a few years ago and decided to check the driver. I went to Additional Drivers to install the proprietary driver and it looks like it's installed and active but I'm still having this problem. There is another driver option, the post-release NVIDIA driver, but that does not fix the problem either. Also, under System Details/Graphics the graphics device is listed as Unknown, which might indicate that it is using an open source generic driver and not the proprietary NVidia driver. But under Additional Drivers it says that I am using the NVidia driver. Any help is appreciated.

• Crackling sound from microphone recently, in 13.04

  I use 13.04 since the release and I use Skype which was working well. But recently I've had remarks saying my voice was "crackling", even if the voice from my interlocutor was perfect. Making a test with Audacity and Cheese, I've seen that every recorded sound (with the front microphone of my laptop or a jack microphone) was crackling. It's not really like saturating, the sound has a lot of annoying pops. I've tried to check the settings, they were still on PulseAudio. I've even tried the extreme solution : re-installing Ubuntu (because initially it was working)… with the same problem. If I boot on Windows (dual-boot) I have no problem (so it's not physical). If anyone could help :) My laptop is a HP dv6-6165sf. The sound card is a "IDT 92HD81B1X5" (with BeatsAudio). Thanks a lot ! New tests - july 6th Hi again, I've tried editing /etc/pulse/default.pa with these three settings : load-module module-udev-detect use_ucm=0 tsched=0 load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0 load-module module-udev-detect use_ucm=0 The three of them don't change anything, except the last one (which was by default) which makes Audacity record without any crackling sound. But in Skype, Cheese and Kazam, the sound is crackling… I've installed again Ubuntu 13.04 (from scratch, deleting everything from /home), and I've updated it. The microphone is still cracking.   In the most specific, unemotional terms: Reinstalled os, using 11.10(1 month after release to skip initial issues that usually crop up). Configured system to my specifications(just ways of organizing config files, etc). Log out Log back in after after an hour or so...to find my home directory obliterated and just a few skeleton files existing. think oh well, try again (this has happened before with an install for reasons I've never been able to pinpoint, usually around install time with some sort of update but its never been a major recurring issue) same thing happens I thought something was awry, so I reinstalled again (another 20 minutes, meh) Set up system, arranged home directory a bit differently thinking maybe I tread on something I shouldn't have. log out, come back --- the same thing. Most of the directories I added were deleted (e.g. .xmonad which links to xmonad.hs in my portable config directory) tl;dr every change I make in my home directory gets deleted. The emotional part: UNACCEPTABLE. I need to configure my system the way I want, not get punched in the face everytime I make a change. I'll willingly fill in details as needed, this was just a start to see if anyone can help, I've found no trace of this issue in a search.

• 13.04 Temp Save, rt3290, Kernel downgrade

  It's kind of a multiplying but I didn't wanted to open more than one topics. I'd have a fresh install of Ubuntu with tlp configured and using acpi_call to keep 7670M turned off. I was a short time arch user and with openbox and firefox it was about 60 to 70 degrees; wanted to turn to a stable release just for this reason. acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +50.0°C radeon-pci-0100 Adapter: PCI adapter temp1: -128.0°C coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Physical id 0: +56.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 0: +54.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) Core 1: +55.0°C (high = +87.0°C, crit = +105.0°C) The temperature is not seriously high yet can be lower. Another issue is my wifi card, rt3290: The rt2800pci module is fine and all that but the download performance is pretty bad alongside of annoying signal range and the prop. driver gives a conf error about some specific rt2860 code and integrales in pci_dev file. If I blank off the error making variables, module loads but the driver is unused. Since the driver is old, I was thinking of downgrading the kernel of raring to 3.7 or may be 3.6. Should &-or can I?

  Purpose The integration of WebADI technology with the Install Base Mass Update function is designed to make creation and update of bulk item instances much easier than in the past. What is it? WebADI is an Excel-based desktop application where users can download an Excel template with item instances pre-populated based on search criteria.  Users can create and update item instances in the Excel sheet and finally upload the Excel data using an "upload" option available in the Excel menu. On upload, the modified data will bulk upload to interface tables which are processed by an asynchronous concurrent program that users can monitor for the uploaded results. Advantage: This allows users to work in a disconnected Environment: session time outs can be avoided, as once a template is downloaded the user can work in a disconnected environment and once all updates are done the new input can be uploaded.   I have problem with nvidia graphics driver opensource and proprietary ! Can't change resolution on 3d games and there's a bug there are no kernel sources installed and thus jockey can't install proprietary drivers. I can't change resolution while on games fullscreen. I tried to install proprietary driver and i couldn't plus i couldn't login to ubuntu it showed only the desktop photo no dash no nothing. -tried to install kernel sources and blacklist+remove Nouveau drivers and then installed the proprietary drivers i hope succesfully. -The problem is the same i can't change resolution on 3d games while on fullscreen. I've installed the sources and be able to install the proprietary nvidia drivers but the problem remains, look what i got in the output of a 3d game exited while i tried to change resolution: X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation) Major opcode of failed request: 150 (XFree86-VidModeExtension) Minor opcode of failed request: 10 (XF86VidModeSwitchToMode) Value in failed request: 0x25b Serial number of failed request: 497 Current serial number in output stream: 499 I'm giving you more details about my system: i have an nvidia geforce gts 250 , 3,4 ghz quadcore amd phenom2 , 8gbytes of ram. • Nvidia drivers with GeForce 680M problem [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? I have a new Alienware M17x which I have installed 64-bit Ubuntu 12.10 (dual boot). I have tried various ways to install the Nvidia drivers for the GeForce GTX 680M (which they claim they are compatible with): from Ubuntu Software Centre (though Additional Drivers fails to detect the card.) using sudo apt-get install nvidia-current downloading the drivers from nvidia and manually installing them (ctrl + alt + F6, sudo service lightdm stop, sudo ./NVIDIA*, sudo reboot) (each with a clean install of Ubuntu) but in all cases, when I reboot after installing nvidia-setings claims that I am not using the driver and should sudo nvidia-xconfig from the terminal, which I do but this has no effect and I am stuck in crappy resolution until I rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot. • Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) 5.1

  Last week, we released the latest update of Oracle Secure Global Desktop. Release 5.1 introduces a number of bug fixes and smaller changes but the most interesting one is definitely increased support for html5-based client access. In SGD 5.0 we added support for Apple iPads using Safari to connect to SGD and display your session right inside the browser. The traditional model for SGD is that you connect using a webbrowser to the webtop and applications that are displayed locally using a local client (tta). This client gets installed the first time you connect. So in the traditional model (which works very well...) you need a webbrowser, java and the tta client. With the addition of html5 support, there's no longer a need to install a local client, in fact, there is also no longer a need to have java installed. We currently support Chrome as a browser to enable html5 clients. This allows us to enable html5 on the android devices and also on desktops running Chrome (Windows, MacOS X, Linux). Connections will work transparently across proxy servers as well. So now you can run any SGD published app or desktop right from your webbrowser inside a browser window. This is very convenient and cool.

  The JCP Program will be hosting a Spec Lead call on 20 December on the topic of developing a Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK).  A Technology Compatibility Kit is a required output of a JSR at Final Release, along with the Specification and Reference Implementation (RI).   The TCK must test all aspects of a specification that impact how compatible an implementation of that specification would be, such as the public API and all mandatory elements of the specification. The Reference Implementation is required to pass the TCK. A vendor's implementation of a specification is only considered compatible if the implementation passes the TCK fully and completely.  The TCK is used to test implementations of the Final Specification to make sure that they are fully compatible. • Screen flickering / scrambling on an Asus UL30A

  Recently my Laptop screen started to flicker. You can view the phenomena here: YouTube Sometimes the screen is totally scrambled, but most of the time it starts with the Title bar only. It happens inconsistently. My Laptop is Asus UL30A and I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. • Is it reasonable to null guard every single dereferenced pointer?

  At a new job, I've been getting flagged in code reviews for code like this: PowerManager::PowerManager(IMsgSender* msgSender) : msgSender_(msgSender) { } void PowerManager::SignalShutdown() { msgSender_->sendMsg("shutdown()"); } I'm told that last method should read: void PowerManager::SignalShutdown() { if (msgSender_) { msgSender_->sendMsg("shutdown()"); } } i.e., I must put a NULL guard around the msgSender_ variable, even though it is a private data member. It's difficult for me to restrain myself from using expletives to describe how I feel about this piece of 'wisdom'. When I ask for an explanation, I get a litany of horror stories about how some junior programmer, some-year, got confused about how a class was supposed to work and accidentally deleted a member he shouldn't have (and set it to NULL afterwards, apparently), and things blew up in the field right after a product release, and we've "learned the hard way, trust us" that it's better to just NULL check everything. To me, this feels like cargo cult programming, plain and simple. A few well-meaning colleagues are earnestly trying to help me 'get it' and see how this will help me write more robust code, but... I can't help feeling like they're the ones who don't get it. Is it reasonable for a coding standard to require that every single pointer dereferenced in a function be checked for NULL first—even private data members? (Note: To give some context, we make a consumer electronics device, not an air traffic control system or some other 'failure-equals-people-die' product.) EDIT: In the above example, the msgSender_ collaborator isn't optional. If it's ever NULL, it indicates a bug. The only reason it is passed into the constructor is so PowerManager can be tested with a mock IMsgSender subclass.

  For MMORPG, there is a tick function to update every object's state in a map. The function was triggered by a timer in fixed interval. So each map's update can be dispatch to different thread. At other side, server handle player incoming package have its own threads also: I/O threads. Generally, the handler of the corresponding incoming package run in I/O threads. So there is a problem: thread synchronization. I have consider two methods: Synchronize with mutex. I/O thread lock a mutex before execute handler function and map thread lock same mutex before it execute map's update. Execute all handler functions in map's thread, I/O thread only queue the incoming handler and let map thread to pop the queue then call handler function. These two have a disadvantage: delay. For method 1, if the map's tick function is running, then all clients' request need to waiting the lock release. For method 2, if map's tick function is running, all clients' request need to waiting for next tick to be handle. Of course, there is another method: add lock to functions that use data which will be accessed both in I/O thread & map thread. But this is hard to maintain and easy to goes incorrect. It needs carefully check all variables whether or not accessed by both two kinds thread. My problem is: is there better way to do this? Notice that I said map is logic concept means no interactions can happen between two map except transport. I/O thread means thread in 3rd part network lib which used to handle client request.

• Git Branch Model for iOS projects with one developer

  I'm using git for an iOS project, and so far have the following branch model: feature_brach(usually multiple) -> development -> testing -> master Feature-branches are short-lived, just used to add a feature or bug, then merged back in to development and deleted. Development is fairly stable, but not ready for production. Testing is when we have a stable version with enough features for a new update, and we ship to beta testers. Once testing is finished, it can be moved back into development or advanced into master. The problem, however, lies in the fact that we can't instantly deploy. On iOS, it can be several weeks between the time a build is released and when it actually hits users. I always want to have a version of the code that is currently on the market in my repo, but I also have to have a place to keep the current stable code to be sent for release. So: where should I keep stable code where should I keep the code currently on the market and where should I keep the code that is in review with Apple, and will be (hopefully) put on the market soon? Also, this is a one developer team, so collaboration is not totally necessary, but preferred because there may be more members in the future.

I have since been asked if I could post the source code for this demo, so here it is (I am using similar techniques in my Task-It application). The database Before running the code for this app you will need to create the database. First, create a database called MVVMProject in SQL Server, then run MVVMProject.sql in the MVVMProjectDemo/Database directory of your downloaded .zip file. This should give you a Task table with 3 records in it.   How can I get the 3D transitions working on Impress? I got a presentation coming soon, and as a requirement of the course the professor want us to use transitions on our "Power Point" chapter, obviously I have been using LibreOffice in every exercise but the native transitions are kind of lame, so when I install the newer version of Ubuntu, always install the extra package to the transitions - I had installed the 3D package: libreoffice-ogltrans 1:3.4.3-3ubuntu2 In previous versions of Ubuntu and worked perfectly, but for some reason is not working in this release. I got LibreOffice 3.4.3, Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) and my hardware is not relevant because I had it working before on previous releases. I know is not critical, but for my class is a pretty important deal, and can be a perfect opportunity to show the class that the cool stuff are not only in Windows. • How do spambots work?

  I have a forum that's getting hit a lot by forum spambots, and of course the best way to defeat something is to know thy enemy. I'll worry about defeating those spambots later, but right now I'd like to know more about them. Reading around, I felt surprised about the lack of thorough information on the subject (or perhaps my ineptness to input the correct search terms for better google results). I'm interested in learning all about spambots. I've asked on other forums and gotten brush-off answers like "Spambots are always users registering on your site." How do forum spambots work? How do they find the 'new user registration' page? (I'm especially surprised because some forums don't have a dedicated URL for this eg, www.forum.com/register.html , but instead use query strings or even other methods invisible to the URL bar) How do they know what to enter into each 'new user registration' field? How do they determine what's a page they can spam / enter data into and what is not? Do they even 'view' this page at all? ..If not, then I'd assume they're communicating with the server directly - how is - this possible? How do they do it? Can forum spambots break CAPTCHAs? Can they solve logic questions (how?)? Math questions? Do they reverse-engineer client-side anti-bot validation scripts? Server-side scripts? What techniques are still valid to prevent them? Where do spambots come from? Is someone sitting behind the computer snickering as they watch their bot destroy site after site? Or are they snickering as they simply 'release' it onto the internet somehow? Are spambots 'run' by an infected computer somewhere? Do they replicate themselves? etc

• What makes a theme "Premium"

  I have a lot of time invested in creating Wordpress templates. I want to release combinations of these templates along with different styles and Fancy Front pages as "Premium Wordpress Themes". What I need to know is what does "Premium" mean? What do people expect of a GPL theme vs. a Premium theme? Are there features that are considered required to be premium? Are there features that are in demand but considered "exceptional" i.e. not part of every premium theme? How can I tell the difference? I have heard tounge-in-cheek answers that say that any theme that makes money is premium, but I mean to ask about what gives an outstanding theme it's quality. Why is it worth more? I am technically able to do many things, but as a lone developer with a family to feed, I can't afford to spend time on features that no one cares about. I have to try to isolate the things that people want. This is serious food and rent to me. How can I get this kind of info so I can make my project successful?

• Dual displays not working - NVidia - Ubuntu 12.4

  Graphics Card: NVidia 460 GTX. Driver: NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) I have one DVI monitor, an old Dell LCD from 2005, and one VGA monitor, an Asus ML238H from 2010 whose HDMI port broke. The Asus is plugged into my graphics card's primary monitor slot and is the better monitor even though it is VGA but my computer defaults to the Dell. This happens when I boot as well; the loading screens, the motherboard brand image, etc. are all displayed on the Dell monitor until Windows loads. Then both monitors work. The same thing happened when I booted up Ubuntu 12.4 but I did not see the second monitor when the log-in screen popped up, nor did I when I logged in. I went to System Settings/Displays and my Asus monitor is not an option. I clicked Detect Displays and the Asus is not detected. I looked at the other questions regarding NVIDIA drivers and recalled my problems with Ubuntu a few years ago and decided to check the driver. I went to Additional Drivers to install the proprietary driver and it looks like it's installed and active but I'm still having this problem. There is another driver option, the post-release NVIDIA driver, but that does not fix the problem either. Also, under System Details/Graphics the graphics device is listed as Unknown, which might indicate that it is using an open source generic driver and not the proprietary NVidia driver. But under Additional Drivers it says that I am using the NVidia driver. Any help is appreciated.

• How can I make sure my evening project code is mine?

  I'm a physicist with a CS degree and just started my PhD at a tech company (wanted to do applied research). It deals with large scale finite element simulations. After reviewing their current approach, I think that a radically different method has to be applied (they are using a commercial tool which is very limited). I'd rather base my research on an open source finite element solver and write a program which makes use of it. I'd like to develop this idea in the evenings, because that's the time that best suits me for programming (during the day I prefer reading and maths) and use it at a late stage of my PhD. I'd like to have the option to release my program as open source on my website as a reference, for future personal or even commercial (e.g. consulting) use. How can I make sure that my company doesn't claim the code ownership? I don't really I thought that a version control system could help (check out only in the evening). This would document that I programmed not during regular office hours (documented elsewhere). But these data can be easily manufactured. Any other ideas? I want to stress that I'm not interested in selling software. Jurisdiction is EU, if that matters. Thank you.

• Can't install GTX 680 drivers on 12.04

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop. I have three monitors, and after installing, ubuntu only detected one at 1080p. I downloaded the driver from the nvidia website, but when I stop lightdm and try to run the driver, it gives me an error message: ERROR: Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option. I tried instead to install the driver via the terminal, with the X ppa. The installation seemed to work, but when I rebooted, my display was at 640x480 resolution, with no other options for resolution. The NVIDIA X Server settings program is there now, but when I run it, it simply tells me that I don't seem to be using their driver, and that I should run nvidia-xconfig as root. Doing so doesn't help, I simply get the same issue again. I checked the file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and it's an NVIDIA file (has nvidia in the header). Does anyone know something else I can try? EDIT: Forgot to mention, I tried installing drivers via the "Additional Drivers" GUI utility, there were two options, one of them marked "(post-release updates)". I tried both of them, in both cases it tried to download and install for a while, then said that there was an error, and that a description could be found at /var/log/jockey.log. Both logs were over 700 lines
