  • c#: Design advice. Using DataTable or List<MyObject> for a generic rule checker

    - by Andrew White
Hi, I have about 100,000 lines of generic data. Columns/Properties of this data are user definable and are of the usual data types (string, int, double, date). There will be about 50 columns/properties. I have 2 needs: To be able to calculate new columns/properties using an expression e.g. Column3 = Column1 * Column2. Ultimately I would like to be able to use external data using a callback, e.g. Column3 = Column1 * GetTemperature The expression is relatively simple, maths operations, sum, count & IF are the only necessary functions. To be able to filter/group the data and perform aggregations e.g. Sum(Data.Column1) Where(Data.Column2 == "blah") As far as I can see I have two options: 1. Using a DataTable. = Point 1 above is achieved by using DataColumn.Expression = Point 2 above is acheived by using DataTable.DefaultView.RowFilter & C# code 2. Using a List of generic Objects each with a Dictionary< string, object to store the values. = Point 1 could be achieved by something like NCalc = Point 2 is achieved using LINQ DataTable: Pros: DataColumn.Expression is inbuilt Cons: RowFilter & coding c# is not as "nice" as LINQ, DataColumn.Expression does not support callbacks(?) = workaround could be to get & replace external value when creating the calculated column GenericList: Pros: LINQ syntax, NCalc supports callbacks Cons: Implementing NCalc/generic calc engine Based on the above I would think a GenericList approach would win, but something I have not factored in is the performance which for some reason I think would be better with a datatable. Does anyone have a gut feeling / experience with LINQ vs. DataTable performance? How about NCalc? As I said there are about 100,000 rows of data, with 50 columns, of which maybe 20 are calculated. In total about 50 rules will be run against the data, so in total there will be 5 million row/object scans. Would really appreciate any insights. Thx. ps. Of course using a database + SQL & Views etc. would be the easiest solution, but for various reasons can't be implemented.

  • Combining lists of objects containing lists of objects in c#

    - by Dan H
    The title is a little prosaic, I know. I have 3 classes (Users, Cases, Offices). Users and Cases contain a list of Offices inside of them. I need to compare the Office lists from Users and Cases and if the ID's of Offices match, I need to add those IDs from Cases to the Users. So the end goal is to have the Users class have any Offices that match the Offices in the Cases class. Any ideas? My code (which isnt working) foreach (Users users in userList) foreach (Cases cases in caseList) foreach (Offices userOffice in users.officeList) foreach (Offices caseOffice in cases.officeList) { if (userOffice.ID == caseOffice.ID) users.caseAdminIDList.Add(cases.adminID); }//end foreach //start my data classes class Users { public Users() { List<Offices> officeList = new List<Offices>(); List<int> caseAdminIDList = new List<int>(); ID = 0; }//end constructor public int ID { get; set; } public string name { get; set; } public int adminID { get; set; } public string ADuserName { get; set; } public bool alreadyInDB { get; set; } public bool alreadyInAdminDB { get; set; } public bool deleted { get; set; } public List<int> caseAdminIDList { get; set; } public List<Offices> officeList { get; set; } } class Offices { public int ID { get; set; } public string name { get; set; } } class Users { public Users() { List<Offices> officeList = new List<Offices>(); List<int> caseAdminIDList = new List<int>(); ID = 0; }//end constructor public int ID { get; set; } public string name { get; set; } public int adminID { get; set; } public string ADuserName { get; set; } public bool alreadyInDB { get; set; } public bool alreadyInAdminDB { get; set; } public bool deleted { get; set; } public List<int> caseAdminIDList { get; set; } public List<Offices> officeList { get; set; } }

  • SQL SERVER – 2012 – List All The Column With Specific Data Types in Database

    - by pinaldave
5 years ago I wrote script SQL SERVER – 2005 – List All The Column With Specific Data Types, when I read it again, it is very much relevant and I liked it. This is one of the script which every developer would like to keep it handy. I have upgraded the script bit more. I have included few additional information which I believe I should have added from the beginning. It is difficult to visualize the final script when we are writing it first time. I use every script which I write on this blog, the matter of the fact, I write only those scripts here which I was using at that time. It is quite possible that as time passes by my needs are changing and I change my script. Here is the updated script of this subject. If there are any user data types, it will list the same as well. SELECT s.name AS 'schema', ts.name AS TableName, c.name AS column_name, c.column_id, SCHEMA_NAME(t.schema_id) AS DatatypeSchema, t.name AS Datatypename ,t.is_user_defined, t.is_assembly_type ,c.is_nullable, c.max_length, c.PRECISION, c.scale FROM sys.columns AS c INNER JOIN sys.types AS t ON c.user_type_id=t.user_type_id INNER JOIN sys.tables ts ON ts.OBJECT_ID = c.OBJECT_ID INNER JOIN sys.schemas s ON s.schema_id = t.schema_id ORDER BY s.name, ts.name, c.column_id I would be very interested to see your script which lists all the columns of the database with data types. If I am missing something in my script, I will modify it based on your comment. This way this page will be a good bookmark for the future for all of us. • SQL SERVER – Storing Variable Values in Temporary Array or Temporary List

    - by pinaldave
SQL Server does not support arrays or a dynamic length storage mechanism like list. Absolutely there are some clever workarounds and few extra-ordinary solutions but everybody can;t come up with such solution. Additionally, sometime the requirements are very simple that doing extraordinary coding is not required. Here is the simple case. Let us say here are the values: a, 10, 20, c, 30, d. Now the requirement is to store them in a array or list. It is very easy to do the same in C# or C. However, there is no quick way to do the same in SQL Server. Every single time when I get such requirement, I create a table variable and store the values in the table variables. Here is the example: For SQL Server 2012: DECLARE @ListofIDs TABLE(IDs VARCHAR(100)); INSERT INTO @ListofIDs VALUES('a'),('10'),('20'),('c'),('30'),('d'); SELECT IDs FROM @ListofIDs; GO When executed above script it will give following resultset. Above script will work in SQL Server 2012 only for SQL Server 2008 and earlier version run following code. DECLARE @ListofIDs TABLE(IDs VARCHAR(100), ID INT IDENTITY(1,1)); INSERT INTO @ListofIDs SELECT 'a' UNION ALL SELECT '10' UNION ALL SELECT '20' UNION ALL SELECT 'c' UNION ALL SELECT '30' UNION ALL SELECT 'd'; SELECT IDs FROM @ListofIDs; GO Now in this case, I have to convert numbers to varchars because I have to store mix datatypes in a single column. Additionally, this quick solution does not give any features of arrays (like inserting values in between as well accessing values using array index). Well, do you ever have to store temporary multiple values in SQL Server – if the count of values are dynamic and datatype is not specified early how will you about storing values which can be used later in the programming. • Get a culture specific list of month names

    - by erwin21
A while ago I found a clever way to retrieve a dynamic culture specific list of months names in C# with LINQ. 1: var months = Enumerable.Range(1, 12) 2: .Select(i => new 3: { 4: Month = i.ToString(), 5: MonthName = new DateTime(1, i, 1).ToString("MMMM") 6: }) 7: .ToList(); .csharpcode, .csharpcode pre { font-size: small; color: black; font-family: consolas, "Courier New", courier, monospace; background-color: #ffffff; /*white-space: pre;*/ } .csharpcode pre { margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .rem { color: #008000; } .csharpcode .kwrd { color: #0000ff; } .csharpcode .str { color: #006080; } .csharpcode .op { color: #0000c0; } .csharpcode .preproc { color: #cc6633; } .csharpcode .asp { background-color: #ffff00; } .csharpcode .html { color: #800000; } .csharpcode .attr { color: #ff0000; } .csharpcode .alt { background-color: #f4f4f4; width: 100%; margin: 0em; } .csharpcode .lnum { color: #606060; } It’s fairly simple, for a range of numbers from 1 to 12 a DateTime object is created (year and day doesn’t matter in this case), then the date time object formatted to a full month name with ToString(“MMMM”). In this example an anonymous object is created with a Month and MonthName property. You can use this solution to populate your dropdown list with months or to display a user friendly month name.

  • Store scores for players and produce a high score list

    - by zrvan
This question is derived from an interview question that I got for a job I was declined. I have asked for code review for my solution at the dedicated Stack Exchange site. But I hope this question is sufficiently rephrased and asked with a different motivation not to be a duplicate of the other question. Consider the following scenario: You should store player scores in the server back end of a game. The server is written in Java. Every score should be registered, that is, one player may have any number of scores for any number of levels. A high score list should be produced with the fifteen top scores for a given level, but only one score per user (to the effect that even if player X has the two highest scores for level Y, only the first position is counted and player Z has the second place). No information should be persisted and only Java 1.7+ standard libraries should be used. No third party libraries or frameworks are acceptable. With the number of players as the primary factor, what would be the best data structure in terms of scalability and concurrency? How would you access the structure to register a single score given a level and a player id? How would you access the structure to compile the high score list?

  • Sequential searching with sorted linked lists

    - by John Graveston
struct Record_node* Sequential_search(struct Record_node *List, int target) { struct Record_node *cur; cur = List->head ; if(cur == NULL || cur->key >= target) { return NULL; } while(cur->next != NULL) { if(cur->next->key >= target) { return cur; } cur = cur->next; } return cur; } I cannot interpret this pseudocode. Can anybody explain to me how this program works and flows? Given this pseudocode that searches for a value in a linked list and a list that is in an ascending order, what would this program return? a. The largest value in the list that is smaller than target b. The largest value in the list that is smaller than or same as target c. The smallest value in the list that is larger than or same as target d. Target e. The smallest value in the list that is larger than target And say that List is [1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 20, 20, 24, 44, 69, 70, 71, 74, 77, 92] and target 15, how many comparisons are occurred? (here, comparison means comparing the value of target)

  • Pressing tab to indent a list moves to the next table cell

    - by Ryan Ternier
I have a list (e.g., a bulleted list) in Microsoft Word. This list is inside a table cell. When I press Tab to increase the indent, rather than increasing the indent, it moves the cursor to the next cell. When I try Ctrl+Tab, it just inserts a tab character without changing the indentation of the bullet (paragraph). How can I turn this off, so it does not go to the next cell but rather just indents the list?

  • How to refresh tag list in org-mode without closing and reopening emacs

    - by Pete
In my emacs org-mode org file I have a tag list #+TAGS: OFFICE(o) COMPUTER(c) HOME(h) PROJECT READING(r) PHOTOGRAPHY(p) At some point, I wish to add a new tag to the list, and apply it to an item (using C-c C-c). But the new tag does not show up in the list of selectable tags. In order to fix this, I close and reopen emacs. But I'm sure that isn't necessary, How do I refresh this list without restarting emacs?

  • What Qt container class to use for a sorted list?

    - by Dave
Part of my application involves rendering audio waveforms. The user will be able to zoom in/out of the waveform. Starting at fully zoomed-out, I only want to sample the audio at the necessary internals to draw the waveform at the given resolution. Then, when they zoom in, asynchronously resample the "missing points" and provide a clearer waveform. (Think Google Maps.) I'm not sure the best data structure to use in Qt world. Ideally, I would like to store data samples sorted by time, but with the ability to fill-in points as needed. So, for example, the data points might initially look like: data[0 ms] = 10 data[10 ms] = 32 data[20 ms] = 21 ... But when they zoom in, I would get more points as necessary, perhaps: data[0 ms] = 10 data[2 ms] = 11 data[4 ms] = 18 data[6 ms] = 30 data[10 ms] = 32 data[20 ms] = 21 ... Note that the values in brackets are lookup values (milliseconds), not array indices. In .Net I might have used a SortedList<int, int>. What would be the best class to use in Qt? Or should I use a STL container?

  • Confused over behavior of List.mapi in F#

    - by James Black
I am building some equations in F#, and when working on my polynomial class I found some odd behavior using List.mapi Basically, each polynomial has an array, so 3*x^2 + 5*x + 6 would be [|6, 5, 3|] in the array, so, when adding polynomials, if one array is longer than the other, then I just need to append the extra elements to the result, and that is where I ran into a problem. Later I want to generalize it to not always use a float, but that will be after I get more working. So, the problem is that I expected List.mapi to return a List not individual elements, but, in order to put the lists together I had to put [] around my use of mapi, and I am curious why that is the case. This is more complicated than I expected, I thought I should be able to just tell it to make a new List starting at a certain index, but I can't find any function for that. type Polynomial() = let mutable coefficients:float [] = Array.empty member self.Coefficients with get() = coefficients static member (+) (v1:Polynomial, v2:Polynomial) = let ret = List.map2(fun c p -> c + p) (List.ofArray v1.Coefficients) (List.ofArray v2.Coefficients) let a = List.mapi(fun i x -> x) match v1.Coefficients.Length - v2.Coefficients.Length with | x when x < 0 -> ret :: [((List.ofArray v1.Coefficients) |> a)] | x when x > 0 -> ret :: [((List.ofArray v2.Coefficients) |> a)] | _ -> [ret]

  • Dynamic type for List<T>?

    - by Brett
Hi All, I've got a method that returns a List for a DataSet table public static List<string> GetListFromDataTable(DataSet dataSet, string tableName, string rowName) { int count = dataSet.Tables[tableName].Rows.Count; List<string> values = new List<string>(); // Loop through the table and row and add them into the array for (int i = 0; i < count; i++) { values.Add(dataSet.Tables[tableName].Rows[i][rowName].ToString()); } return values; } Is there a way I can dynamically set the datatype for the list and have this one method cater for all datatypes so I can specify upon calling this method that it should be a List<int or List<string> or List<AnythingILike>? Also, what would the return type be when declaring the method? Thanks in advance, Brett

  • Android: Registering ContextMenu for a Custom ListAdapter

    - by primal
Hi, I made a custom list adapter extending the Base adapter. Each item in the list has an imagebutton, 2 textviews and a button. I tried to add the context menu to the list so as to display some options for an item in the list. registerForContextMenu(getListView()); I used a MenuInflater object to inflate the context menu xml file. But on clicking the items in the list nothing shows up or the usual highlighting of the item of list on click isn't shown. Is it that the context menu doesn't work for custom list views? Any help would be much appreciated. Regards, Primal

  • Cloned Cached item has memory issues

    - by ioWint
Hi there, we are having values stored in Cache-Enterprise library Caching Block. The accessors of the cached item, which is a List, modify the values. We didnt want the Cached Items to get affected. Hence first we returned a new List(IEnumerator of the CachedItem) This made sure accessors adding and removing items had little effect on the original Cached item. But we found, all the instances of the List we returned to accessors were ALIVE! Object relational Graph showed a relationship between this list and the EnterpriseLibrary.CacheItem. So we changed the return to be a newly cloned List. For this we used a LINQ say (from item in Data select new DataClass(item) ).ToList() even when you do as above, the ORG shows there is a relationship between this list and the CacheItem. Cant we do anything to create a CLONE of the List item which is present in the Enterprise library cache, which DOESNT have ANY relationship with CACHE?!

  • Convert list to sequence of variables

    - by wtzolt
    I was wondering if this was possible... I have a sequence of variables that have to be assigned to a do.something (a, b) a and b variables accordingly. Something like this: # # Have a list of sequenced variables. list = 2:90 , 1:140 , 3:-40 , 4:60 # # "Template" on where to assign the variables from the list. do.something (a,b) # # Assign the variables from the list in a sequence with possibility of "in between" functions like print and time.sleep() added. do.something (2,90) time.sleep(1) print "Did something (%d,%d)" % (# # vars from list?) do.something (1,140) time.sleep(1) print "Did something (%d,%d)" % (# # vars from list?) do.something (3,-40) time.sleep(1) print "Did something (%d,%d)" % (# # vars from list?) do.something (4,60) time.sleep(1) print "Did something (%d,%d)" % (# # vars from list?) Any ideas?

  • Excel::Shape object getting released automatically after the count reaches 18 in List<T>

    - by A9S6
I have a Excel addin written in C# 2.0 in which I am experiencing a strange behavior. Please note that this behavior is only seen in Excel 2003 and NOT in Excel 2007 or 2010. Issue: When the user clicks an import command button, a file is read and a number of Shapes are created/added to the worksheet using Worksheet::Shapes::AddPicture() method. A reference to these Shape objects are kept in a generic list: List<Excel.Shape> list = new List<Excel.Shape>(); Everything works fine till the list has less than 18 references. When the count reaches 18, and a new Shape reference is added, the first one i.e. @ index [0] is released. I am unable to call any method or property on that reference and calling a method/property throws a COMException (0x800A1A8) i.e. Object Required. If I add one more, then the reference @ [1] is not accessible and so on. Strange enough... this happens with Shape object only i.e. If I add one Shape and then 17 nulls to the list then this wont happen until 17 more Shape objects are added. Does anyone has an idea why it happens after the count reaches 18? I thought it might be something with the List's default capacity. Something like relocating the references during which they get released so I initialized it with a capacity of 1000 but still no luck. List<Excel.Shape> list = new List<Excel.Shape>(1000); Any Idea??

  • F# List SelectMany

    - by Tuomas Hietanen
This is quite simple question but I didn't find an answer: Is there any Seq/List operation in F# to match the LINQ SelectMany? I know I can use System.Linq in F# if I want to. I know I can make a recursive method and use F# Computation Expressions (and make even more powerful things). But if I try to prove that F# List operations are more powerful than LINQ... .Where = List.filter .Select = List.map .Aggregate = List.fold ... In C# SelectMany usage syntax is pretty simple: var flattenedList = from i in items1 from j in items2 select ... Is there any easy direct match, List.flatten, List.bind or something like that? SelectMany has a couple of signatures, but the most complex one seems to be: IEnumerable<TResult> SelectMany<TSource, TCollection, TResult>( this IEnumerable<TSource> source, Func<TSource, IEnumerable<TCollection>> collectionSelector, Func<TSource, TCollection, TResult> resultSelector ); In F# terms this would be: ('a -> 'b list) -> ('a -> 'b -> 'c) -> 'a list -> 'c list

  • Python 2D list has weird behavor when trying to modify a single value...

    - by Brian
Hi guys, So I am relatively new to Python and I am having trouble working with 2D Lists. Here's my code: data = [[None]*5]*5 data[0][0] = 'Cell A1' print data and here is the output (formatted for readability): [['Cell A1', None, None, None, None], ['Cell A1', None, None, None, None], ['Cell A1', None, None, None, None], ['Cell A1', None, None, None, None], ['Cell A1', None, None, None, None]] Why does every row get assigned the value?
