• Android framework. What is it?

  I've few questions on Android Framework. Can someone please answer them i) What does an Android Framework do? What is it's job? ii) What are these managers - Activity Manager, Location Manager etc? Are they APIs or libraries? iii) I heard that the definition of a framework is - a set of libraries that say “Don’t call us, we’ll call you.” So can I say that Activity Manager, Location Manager etc are such libraries? Or is it that they are not libraries but APIs (used to access underlying c/c++ libraries) and the actual libraries that do "Don't call us, we'll call you." are hidden from us?

• Why I get different date formats when I run my application through IIS and Visual Studio's web serve

  I get the same culture i.e. "en-US" while running the website from both IIS and Visual Studio's web server. But I get a different date format as follows, when I run the following code: HttpContext.Current.Response.Write(System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture.ToString()); HttpContext.Current.Response.Write(System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture.DateTimeFormat.ShortDatePattern); On Visual Studio's web server: dd/MM/yyyy en-US On IIS: M/d/yyyy en-US Does "Regional and Language Options" in "Control Panel" play any role in this ? If I change the date format there in "Regional and Language Options", I see no effect in my application.

• Understanding top output in Linux

  Hi, I'm trying to determine the CPU usage of a program by looking at the output from Top in Linux. I understand that %us means userspace and %sy means system/kernel etc. But say I see 100%us. Does this mean that the CPU is really only doing useful work? What if a CPU is tied up waiting for resources that are not avaliable, or cache misses, would it also show up in the %us column, or any other column? Thank you.

In our website objects are users, teams, companies, channels and groups (please don't ask why there are groups and teams - it is complicated for me too, but teams are releated to user's talent) Users, teams, channels, companies and groups have all their own tables. I have a query which gets me all the follower's leaders like this select --fo.leader_id, --fo.leader_type, us.name as user_name, co.name as company_name, ch.title as channel_name, gr.name as group_name, tt.name as team_name from follow_up fo left join users us on (fo.leader_id = us.id and fo.leader_type = 'user') left join companies co on (fo.leader_id = co.user_id and fo.leader_type = 'company') left join channels ch on (fo.leader_id = ch.id and fo.leader_type = 'channel') left join groups gr on (fo.leader_id = gr.id and fo.leader_type = 'group') left join talent_teams tt on (fo.leader_id = tt.id and fo.leader_type = 'team') where follower_id = 83 I need to get all fields like: user_name, company_name, channel_name, group_name, team_name as one field in SELECT's product. • Ruby string encoding problem

  I've looked at the other ruby/encoding related posts but haven't been able to figure out why the following is not working. Likely just because I'm dense, but here's the situation. Using Ruby 1.9 on windows. I have a set of CSV files that need some data appended to the end of each line. Whenever I run my script, the appended characters are gibberish. The input text appears to be IBM437 encoding, whereas my string I'm appending starts as US-ASCII. Nothing I've tried with respect to forcing encoding on the input strings or the append string seems to change the resultant output. I'm stumped. • VB.net Network Graph code/algorithm

  For a school project we need to visualise a computer network graph. The number of computers with specific properties are read from an XML file, and then a graph should be created. Ad random computers are added and removed. Is there any open source project or algorithm that could help us visualising this in VB.net? Or would you suggest us to switch to java. Update: We eventually switched java and used the Jung libraries because this was easier for us to understand and implement.

• What do you enjoy about programming?

  Some of us here(or is it just me?) enjoy programming. Even if we're not being paid for it, and in some cases, even though the end result will not do anything for us. For example, many people do the Project Euler problems just for fun, and in the end nothing was really "accomplished" materially. What is it that makes us enjoy programming? How is programming different from another job? You don't see an accountant going home to do some accounting on their own time just for the pure joy of it. How are we different? (also, if anyone has some ideas on how to tag this, then please do correct it for me.. )

• Can someone explain an Enterprise Service Bus to me in non-buzzspeak?

  Some of our partners are telling us that our software needs to interact with an Enterprise Service Bus. After researching this a bit, my instinct is to say that this is just buzz speak for saying that we need to have a platform-indpendent way to pass messages back and forth. I'm just trying to get a feel for what our partners are telling us. Am I correct in dismissing our partners' request as just trying to get our software to be more buzzword-compliant, or are they telling us something we should listen to (even if encoded in buzzspeak)?

• Modx: How to create a contact form with a dropdown of offices to cc the email to?

  In the contact us template I want to have a dropdown with the list of offices (All offices articles are places under the same parent node, so getting the list should be fairly easy). I need a way to add the office email address (Template variable from the Office article) to the email generated by Modx's eForm. I don't want the email address to be visible in the contact us form, but a snippet fetching the article Template variable email address. I also want a link from each offices article to the contact us form with the office preselected in the dropdown. How should I implement this?

  Hi All, I've built my application in .net and sql server 2008. Having looking for a hosting soultion I stumpled upon windows azure. I saw that currently its only availabe in the US. Can I use the service if I live outside of the US? If I upload my website up there and people try entering, will people from outside of the US be blocked? Sorry for posting an unrelated program question. I am not receiving an answer anywhere else, and I can see that there are serveral question regarding azure which are not program related here. • Detect at runtime which country's App Store my iPhone app was downloaded from?

  I have a feature in my iPhone application that, for business reasons, should only be shown/available to customers in the US. If I want to release this app to App Stores outside the US, what's the best way to figure out which country I'm in without relying on user-defined settings such as language and locale? In my mind, the ideal solution is that there's some runtime property that can tell me which App Store country the app was downloaded from, and I can take action accordingly. Looking through the docs and searching the web, I'm not coming up with anything in this department. I don't expect the solution to be 100% foolproof as far as users not being in the country they say they're from, but as close as possible would be nice. I suppose one solution would be to make a separate build for a new product on the App Store and have two versions, one for the US and one for the others, but that doesn't seem ideal. I'm hoping it can be the same product on the App Store to prevent things like fragmentation of user reviews. Thanks in advance!

  Hello, We implementing offline feature to an existing application. We have implemented the syn with SQL Server internal change tracking and over WCF using MS Sync Framework (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sync/default.aspx) All of our tables have primary key as integer, we cannot move to GUID. So as you are thinking we will have identity crises between applications. So we decided to go with the way Merge replication does(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa179416(SQL.80).aspx) partition the primary key range. Below is the example scenario - Server Table A - ID Range - 0 to 100 Client 1 Table A - ID Range - 101 to 200 Client 2 Table A - ID Range - 201 to 300 how to implement this ? i know we can use BCC CHECKIDENT (yourtable, reseed, value) CHECK (([ID]<=(100))) but this does not solve the issue.... Merge replication provides an option of "Not for replication"(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa237102(SQL.80).aspx) to achieve insert form clients and still maintain the set range.. can i use that somehow here? please help...

In my search view I have two select boxes with fixed values like: SELECT BOX 1 SELECT BOX 2 ALL, ALL, FR, FR, US, US, DE DE And I have 2 fields in my DB with country_from and country_to. So for making a simple search like from FR to US I use: @search_result = Load.find(:all, :conditions => "country_from='#{params[:country_from]}' AND country_to='#{params[:country_to]}'" ) that is fine, but I need to implement the ALL option as well, so when I make a search like from DE to ALL I get a list with all countries in country_to I image I can do it with ifs...but what would be the most efficient way to do it?

In my Windows Phone 7 App, I got a page containing a TextBox bound to a Decimal "Amount": <TextBox Text="{Binding Amount,Mode=TwoWay}" InputScope="CurrencyAmount"/> The phone settings are set to German. In german localization, a value like 1234.56m would be formatted 1.234,56 (unlike the US, where it should be 1,234.56). Problem is, when I enter a value like 1.234,56 in the textbox, the content will be interpreted for US, resulting in 1.23456m, when it should have been 1234.56m. So, how do I get the binding on the WP7 to use the current phone culture instead of a generic US one? In Germany people expect to enter a colon for decimals instead of a dot.

  We want to develop apps for a variety of separate clients for use on their iPads/iPhones. Right now we have a developer license and and provision UUIDs manually and distribute the app OTA via a web server. This limits us to 100 devices per license and leaves us paying for upkeep of the license. Some of our clients may also be interested in using an MDM software package. What is the best way for us to provision and push apps to many clients and more that 100 devices? Would each client need to pay for their own enterprise license? Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm struggling to write a conditional php statement that performs a certain action when a page is a child of a parent page. For example, rather than just specifying one page, as below, I'd like to specify all pages that have the 'About Us' page as a parent: <?php if (is_page('About Us')) echo 'Hello World!'; ?> I've tried the "child_of" function but it wasn't as straightforward as I'd hoped.   I am trying to type documents in Hindi language. My OS: Ubuntu 11.10 Gnome environment (http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=gnome-session-fallback) I do not use unity interface.The method is shown here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL7icGNhIfI I am able to type in Hindi in Libreoffice and gedit as well with method shown above.But this is a very difficult way of typing because I have to remember all the English Keys corresponding to the Hindi words as mapped here http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html-single/International_Language_Support_Guide/images/hindi.png What I want to be able to do is type phonetically and not use above kind of keyboard. I have US English keyboard in my laptop. I expect to be able to type phonetically (given with above phonetic selection) what is happening is I have to type like using a QWERTY keyboard for Hindi language which is deviation from expected behavior. Your productivity may vastly increase if you run Windows 95.  Anyone want to switch? No, I don’t want to restart … I want to use my computer! • Can't install libopenssl-ruby

  I'm trying to install ruby on rails and I can't seem to install libopenssl-ruby. I'm on a VPS and I've installed Jaunty as the newer releases don't seem to work very nicely. When I do: apt-get install libopenssl-ruby I get: E: Package libopenssl-ruby has no installation candidate Originally it simply said that it couldn't find the package but after wget'ing a deb form here: http://linuxappfinder.com/package/libopenssl-ruby and trying to install using dpkg I get this new error. Dpkg itself said that it couldn't install my deb as it depended on 'libopenssl-ruby'. Currently my sources.lst is this: ###### Ubuntu Main Repos deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted universe multiverse deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy main restricted universe multiverse Does anyone know what might be wrong?
