• Limit PulseAudio volume to prevent overdrive

  Is it possible to limit maximum volume in PulseAudio? Currently, PulseAudio sets PCM channel too loud which results in distorted sound. • How can i set up email alerts for disk failures on a windows server 2012 box?

  I have a windows 2012 server with 3 storage spaces set up, each containing a mirrored pair of 2TB drives. What is the best way to set up alerting so that i receive an alert when a physical disk fails? Ideally i would like these alerts to be sent via email to a pre-defined address. • Frequent and weird wifi disconnections

  How would you explain, troubleshoot (and solve) the following problem? Wifi ADSL modem router D-link 2640R installed in living room at about 1.8m height. Working fine, synchronising and getting/serving stable internet connection. First situation: -Laptop 01 in other end of the house, let's say in room01 southern to the living room, distant by about 15m. Getting stable signal of good to very good quality. No disconnection. -Laptop 02 in room02 opposite to room01 (5m West) which makes it almost at the same distance and direction from the router located 15m North. Getting stable signal of good to very good quality. No disconnection. Second situation: -Laptop 01 moved to room03 Northern to the living room (actually just 3m behind the wall where the router lies). Getting stable signal of excellent quality. No disconnection. -Laptop 02 still in room02 but now experiences frequent disconnections (actually almost impossible to get the Internet even though the signal level is still very good. Either no Internet with the wifi icon appearing connected to access point or no connection established at all which happens every 2 minutes and that means virtually no Internet at all as I can just get a timeframe of 1 minute or so to load any website or even get to the router's web based control panel. If Laptop 01 is completely shut down or its wifi adapters shut down or even still working but its wifi MAC address forbidden, then Laptop 02 has no problem at all. If Laptop 02 is moved to a nearer location to the router, in the living room for instance, then no connection problem occurs even if Laptop 01 is also connected. And also if we move back Laptop 01 to its original location (room 01), then no problem as well. I'm completely lost and don't know how to address this issue. I tried to change the Wifi channel and even tried the auto channel scan but that didn't solve it. I know that the problem is probably coming from Laptop 01 being in its new location or some sort of interference as the problem occurs only under the described condition but I have no idea how to solve it! I also scanned the neighborhood for wifi jam using InSSIDer, there are few other access points but they don't seem to affect the situation. Any ideas about the steps to follow or tools to use ?

• Does this video card support sound?

  Probably a rookie question but here goes...I am looking to buy a new video card for a few year old PC which will be used as a media centre. The card I am looking at is this one http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173708, with the main aim being to play blu-ray films. In the product description it states that the card has 7.1 audio channel support, does this mean it will play the sound from the blu-ray through the HDMI, or do I need a separate sound card?

• SSH to drive letter in Windows 2003

  I have a Windows 2003 server running a SSH server (WRQ Reflection), how would I ssh to it and specify a specific drive letter? (like the D: drive) ex: from another workstation: ssh [email protected] d: When I do that it fails and I get this error: "exec request failed on channel 0" If I simply SSH to that same windowsbox without trying to specify a drive letter I get a Windows (CMD.EXE) command prompt shell on the C: drive. I can then run any windows command. Thanks

• Why can I no longer pin tabs in Google Chrome?

  I am using the latest dev channel version of Chrome in Ubuntu 9.10. Before Chrome automatically updated a few days ago, I had the option to pin tabs. This option no longer appears when I right-click on a tab. Is anyone else having these problems? If not, any idea what I can do to fix this? Thanks.

• RSS to e-mail notifications?

  There's a web site that's supposed to upload a video I'd like to watch but it could be in several weeks. The only way to be notified of any change is through RSS, but I don't use RSS at all, so installing an RSS client just for this seems overkill. Unless there's a better solution I should know about, do you know of a good, free solution on the web that will watch the RSS channel and send me an e-mail when a new item was added? Thank you.

• Color sprite tint with opacity in MonoGame/XNA

  In MonoGame I am using SpriteBatch to draw sprites. I want to create a semi transparent overlay that would 'tint' the sprite with a given color. SpriteBatch.Draw accepts Color parameter that allows to specify the tint, however the alpha channel seems to make the whole sprite transparent (not the tint only). To address the problem i am overlaying my sprites with another white, semitransparent sprite tinted to a given color. It works as expected, but I am not sure if that is the correct (ie. most optimal) approach. Can you suggest better/faster technique?

• How to use Moonlight to play videos on rtlmost.hu?

  Hi! In Hungary, the biggest TV channel is RTL Klub, they has a video archive site. They use Silverlight instead of Flash :( What is annoying, they use the lastest version of Silverlight, about 4.x. But Moonlight doesn't support it yet. I've been tried in Google Chrome (last dev version), and in Firefox (last stable version), and I've been used the both versions of Moonlight, the lastest stable, and the prerelease. The player loader is displayed, and loaded, but no player displayed after 30 mins waiting. If I want to swith to Ubuntu completly, how can I manage to play these videos? Thanks for your anwsers. • Getting WCF Bindings and Behaviors from any config source

  The need of loading WCF bindings or behaviors from different sources such as files in a disk or databases is a common requirement when dealing with configuration either on the client side or the service side. The traditional way to accomplish this in WCF is loading everything from the standard configuration section (serviceModel section) or creating all the bindings and behaviors by hand in code. However, there is a solution in the middle that becomes handy when more flexibility is needed. This solution involves getting the configuration from any place, and use that configuration to automatically configure any existing binding or behavior instance created with code.  In order to configure a binding instance (System.ServiceModel.Channels.Binding) that you later inject in any endpoint on the client channel or the service host, you first need to get a binding configuration section from any configuration file (you can generate a temp file on the fly if you are using any other source for storing the configuration).  private BindingsSection GetBindingsSection(string path) { System.Configuration.Configuration config = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.OpenMappedExeConfiguration( new System.Configuration.ExeConfigurationFileMap() { ExeConfigFilename = path }, System.Configuration.ConfigurationUserLevel.None); var serviceModel = ServiceModelSectionGroup.GetSectionGroup(config); return serviceModel.Bindings; }   The BindingsSection contains a list of all the configured bindings in the serviceModel configuration section, so you can iterate through all the configured binding that get the one you need (You don’t need to have a complete serviceModel section, a section with the bindings only works).  public Binding ResolveBinding(string name) { BindingsSection section = GetBindingsSection(path); foreach (var bindingCollection in section.BindingCollections) { if (bindingCollection.ConfiguredBindings.Count > 0 && bindingCollection.ConfiguredBindings[0].Name == name) { var bindingElement = bindingCollection.ConfiguredBindings[0]; var binding = (Binding)Activator.CreateInstance(bindingCollection.BindingType); binding.Name = bindingElement.Name; bindingElement.ApplyConfiguration(binding); return binding; } } return null; }   The code above does just that, and also instantiates and configures the Binding object (System.ServiceModel.Channels.Binding) you are looking for. A similar thing can be done for instance with the “Endpoint” behaviors. This last one only contains a protected method “CreateBehavior” that you can use for that purpose. I don’t like this approach but so far I haven’t found a good and fast solution to use Unit Test for testing a WCF behavior. To Implement my solution I had to : Create a Dummy Service Definition; Create the Dummy Service Implementation; Create a host; Create a client in my test; Create and Add the behavior; Dummy Service Definition This is just a simple service, composed of an Interface and a simple implementation. So far so good. Adding the Behavior Add a reference to the Behavior project and add the using entry in the test class. We just need to add the behavior to the service host : 1: [TestMethod] 2: public void TestService() 3: { 4: using (ServiceHost host = TestHost.CreateHost()) 5: { 6: host.Description.Behaviors.Add(new MyBehavior()); 7: host.Open();¨ 8: …  If you set a breakpoint in your behavior and run the test in debug mode, you will hit the breakpoint. In this case I used a ServiceBehavior. To add an Endpoint behavior you have to add it to the endpoints. 1: host.Description.Endpoints[0].Behaviors.Add(new MyEndpointBehavior()) To add a contract or an operation behavior a custom attribute should work on the service contract definition. I haven’t tried that yet.   All the code provided in this blog and in the following files are for sample use. Improvements I don’t like to instantiate a client and a service to test my behaviors. But so far I have' not found an easy way to do it. Today I am passing a type of endpoint to the host creator and it creates the right binding type. This allows me to easily switch between bindings at will. I have used the same approach to test Mex Endpoints, another post should come later for this. Enjoy !
