• Copy Office files from a Mac to a PC

  A friend of me recently dumped his Mac fpr a PC. He used Microsoft Office for Mac and has several hundred Files (Word, Excel) which were copied over to the new PC using a USB disk. Microsoft Office is now unable to read any of there files. I suspect this is because of little endian vs. big endian. Is there any tool which can converted all theses files automatically, doing this by hand would take ages.

• Windows Vista to Windows 7 Gbit LAN slow file copy

  I have two computers with gigabit LAN, one running Windows 7 and the other running Vista. I have a D-Link DIR-655 router, with gigabit LAN ports. I created a shared directory on the Vista computer, mapped it as a network drive on the Win 7 computer, and tried copying a 2 GB file... and it's going at 900 KB/s Yep... 900 kilobytes per second, about 7 Mb/s. Why so slow? Any ideas?

• Scripting a database copy from MS Sql 2005 to 2008 without detach/backup/RDP

  My goal is to move a single SQL 2005 database to a seperate 2008 server. The issue is my level of access to both servers. On each I can only access the database and nothing else. I cant create a backup file or detach the database because I don't have access to the file system or to create a proxy. I've tried using the generate script function of sql 2005 management studio express to restore the schema but receive command not supported errors when attempting to execute the sql on the new database. Similarly I tried using EMS SQL Manager 2005 Lite to script a backup of the schema and data but ran into similar problems. How do I go about acomplishing this? I can't seem to find any solutions outside of using the detach and backup functions.

• Xcopy /exclude does not exclude some of the specified criteria

  Good afternoon. I want xcopy to copy all files meeting a certain criteria located in the C drive to a specific folder, except ones located in the directories specified in excl.txt. The exclusions only work partially - the files located in %systemroot%, %programfiles% and in each profile's appdata are still copied, even though those directories are listed in excl.txt. How do I make xcopy skip those directories, preferentially still using environment vars to specify the paths? My current syntax is: xcopy /s /c /d /h /i /r /y /g /f /EXCLUDE:excl.txt %systemdrive%\*.doc f:\test\ excl.txt currently contains the following: \%temp%\ \%userprofile%\appdata \%programfiles%\ \%programfiles(x86)%\ \%systemroot%\ \%programdata%\ appdata windows %programfiles% Thank you very much.

• Dual-boot two instances of the same copy of Vista using same serial number

  I have a single Vista OEM registration number which has been registered to the current hardware (single partition only), and I want to use it for two instances of dual-booted Vista... Because both Vistas will be running on the same hardware, (and obviously only one at any one time), will they both be recognized as genuine to Windows Update etc... ie will they both pass the Windows Genuine Advantage requirements? .. The only difference between the hardware involved will be the partition. Also, are there any special issues with dual (tripple?) booting two instances of Vista and also one Ubuntu OS?

• background copy large files to a laptop?

  Hey All, I like to watch windows media center recorded TV files on my laptop in bed. I find thought that when the programs are in HD I have a lot of stuttering and delays--no doubt b/c of the amount of data being transferred. I actually have a fair amount of space on the laptop's hdd, and wouldn't mind moving the files onto that hard drive, where no doubt my problem would go away. But that requires some planning & time for the files to move. Is there a utility out there that would kind of 'trickle' the files over to the laptop over a long period of time, w/out soaking its bandwidth? Something like ms' BITS tech?   I'd have a complex folder structure like: h:\folder1\folder2\folder3 h:\folder1\folder2\a h:\folder1\b h:\folder1\folder3 h:\folder1\folder4\d Only with probably 100's of folders and a depth of around 4 (I'm guessing) Anyway I want to run a command that will move all the files from every sub folder into the top level folder. so something like h:\folder1\*\*.* to h:\folder1 Is there a tool I can use to do this? does win 7 have a command that will do this?   I have an disk image with 3 partitions: first partition (hd0,0) is boot-able with GRUB1 with the following configuration GRUB file: default=0 timeout=5 title Bank A root (hd0,1) chainloader +1 title Bank B root (hd0,2) chainloader +1 The partitions (hd0,1) and (hd0,2) are also boot-able. I'm trying to clone partition (hd0,1) to (hd0,2) by creating device map using kpartx and copying whole partition using dd command. The problem is: after partition cloning, the cloned partition did not boot (but all files are OK). What the wrong? I need both partitions to bee identical (I'm using them for fail-over purposes into embedded device)

  Hi, I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a usb stick in persistent install mode. So I could boot the laptop or my desktop computer with the stick, at boot time. Once I needed the 8GB stick for another purposes so I thought about coyping it to my desktop doing from mac os x: dd if=/dev/disks3s of=/Users/jack/Desktop/usb_copy Now I am trying to do the opposite, after having used the stick, which was formatted to NTFS, just doing dd if=/Users/jack/Desktop/usb_copy of=/dev/disks3s but although I can see that almost of the files are there, I can not boot again. IT is also strange the the file permissions are kind of strange, something like _user What can I do ? Thanks

  I use the SUN Presenter Openoffice Extension with a twinview Ubuntu laptop. it works well : I have the video-projector with my presentation and my laptop screen with the slides (and time...). My problem is when I want to present a mono-screen application, like Firefox, gnome-terminal. It is displayed only on one monitor, which is not really efficient if you want to be interactive. • Copy a website and preserve the file & folder structure

  I have an old web site running on an ancient version of Oracle Portal that we need to convert to a flat-html structure. Due to damage to the server we are not able to access the administrative interface, and even if we could there is no export functionality that can work with modern software versions. It would be enough to crawl the website and have all the pages & images saved to a folder, but the file structure needs to be preserved; that is, if a page is located at http://www.oldserver.com/foo/bar/baz/mypage.html then it needs to be saved to /foo/bar/baz/mypage.html so that the various Javascript bits will continue to function. None of the web crawlers I've found have been able to do this; they all want to rename the pages (page01.html, page02.html etc) and break the folder structure. Is there any crawler out there that will recreate the site structure as it appears to a user accessing the site? It doesn't need to redo any of teh content of the pages; once rehosted the pages will all have the same names they did originally so links will continue to work.

• OS X Snow Leopard, change file permissions on copy

  I work with OS X, Snow Leopard and need to allow users to make copies of files (templates) located in a read-only repository for subsequent editing. The repository is located on a separate physical drive mounted to the OS X boot volume. As this is a shared computer in a school environment, all users access the machine via a single login ("user_local"). Whether using POSIX permissions or ACLs, the use case requires the file permissions to change from "read" to "read write" as they get copied to the "user_local" home directory. Googling around has not yielded anything that would indicate that this is possible via the Snow Leopard permission system. Question 1: Is this in fact possible via the permission system? If so, how? Question 2: If not possible, how would one go about solving this problem? I imagine this to be a fairly common use case so there must be a workable solution for it out there. Thanks.

Our instance is based on Linux distribution (CentOS) and AMI is S3-backed. 1 EBS volume (400 GB size) is attached to this instance. Question: We've planned to migrate our deployment to US West (N. California) Region. From AWS doc, I understood that for moving AMI, there is a command-line tool available - ec2-migrate-bundle. But for moving EBS volume across Region, currently there is no tool available. I'm looking for easiest and/or fastest way of copying/moving EBS volume from one Region to another. Also, are there any hidden risks involved during and/or after the migration? Experts ideas/suggestions/recommendations on this are highly appreciated.

  I'm using the EXPORT feature in Hyper-V to move a large Virtual Machine (VM) over a 1GB network from a Windows 2008 to a Windows 2008 R2 box (200GB) and its so intense that I get the following icon on my destination Hyper-V manager: Is this expected? Is there another way to get large file across the network and minimize this intense I/O effect? Anyones else ever seen that Do Not Enter sign? The other VMs are functional but slow, but I'm guessing that is expected.

  I was trying to move my "Users" folder in Windows 8 as described here and here. But when I try to copy the folder using "xcopy" in Windows Installation Disk Repair Mode, after some files are copied, I get "insufficient memory". The files on which the error is given are like C:\Users\Bilal\Application Data\Application Data\Application Data.........Application Data\Application Data..... What is the point in such directories within directories? I also tried copying them using Mini Windows XP, but the problem was there too.. Also tried copying using Parted Magic Live CD... but still.. So now, how can I move them? Another Question. Is moving such/ system files using Linux a good idea? Does it do anything to permissions?

• Computer sponteously reboots when doing heavy file copy to/from disk

  I've been fighting with this problem for the last 3 weeks where my machine will just instantly reboot. No BSOD, and when i checked the event log all that was reported was the generic "Kernal-power" error with the detailed information pointing to a hard crash. This is a machine that was working for 18 months before these crashes started happening. When they started happening is after I added 3 HDs in a RAID-5, upped the memory to 12gb, moved to a new house, added a SSD and added about 5 case fans. I have thus eliminated the RAID, and determined that the SSD was not the cause (because it was still crashing even though the ssd wasn't connected). I've run memtest several times over night with no memory problems showing up. I've run IntelBurnTest to max out the cpu to see if it was a heat issue and at full tilt after 20 min it was only at 85C and the machine didn't crash. I also took a look at the voltages during this test, with a screenshot at the bottom of this post I've ruled out a software issue by reinstalling windows 7 ultimate x64 a total of 5 times, but even during that the install it crashes. Happens sometime during file copying at the beginning, or during uncompressing files, or sometimes during running windows update. The only discernible pattern i can see is that it seems to crash when hard disks might be spinning up or when they are accessed heavily from large file transfers. My current guess is that it is probably an issue with the MB, PSU or the power coming through the outlet. Any suggestions of what i could try to troubleshoot or what may be wrong? Specs PSU: Seasonic M12 700w Mem: 12gb CPU: i7-920 with stock heatsink MB: Asus P6T HDs: 3 green WD and 1 Corsair force 3 120b with 1.3.3 firmware Running full tilt voltages Idling Voltages

• Windows Virtual PC File Copy from host very slow

  I have a Windows 7 desktop on which I've installed Windows Virtual PC and an instance Windows 7. I also have virtual XP instance on the same host. The problem I am having is that copying files from the host to the virtual machine is dog slow. I'm talking 17KB/sec. The host machine has a gigbit NIC. While using the XP virtual instance to do the same I didn't notice a huge difference but on the Window 7 virtual instance the time is really slowing me down. Is there something I need to do (settings) to fix this? I've attached an image of the Resource monitor (of the virtual Windows 7 instance) that shows my network traffic going in bursts rather than relatively steady. The files are on a "public" folder on my host machine.

• Where can I find ready to use windows scripts that used robocopy?

  We are installing the Windows Resource Kit, and that installs RoboCopy. We want to have access to a few windows scripts that uses RoboCopy so we can start from those to build something else. Any ideas on where I can find a few samples? NOTE 1: A bit of information. Every time we try to copy D drive to E drive (new drive) we get an error that says: ERROR 32 (0x000000020) Copying File d:\pagefile.sys The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
