  • Some date math fun

    - by drsql
Note: This concept presented is pretty simple and I am not claiming that I am the first to do this… so if you were the one who came up with this, let me know and I will give you linkage Today I was needing to get the data for the current month for a query, and it hit me that I really didn’t have a good way to do this.  There were two common methods that people use: WHERE YEAR(MonthColumn) = YEAR(Getdate()) AND MONTH(MonthColumn) = MONTH(Getdate()) But this particular method is pretty horrible...(read more)

  • Finding rows that intersect with a date period

    - by DavidWimbush
This one is mainly a personal reminder but I hope it helps somebody else too. Let's say you have a table that covers something like currency exchange rates with columns for the start and end dates of the period each rate was applicable. Now you need to list the rates that applied during the year 2009. For some reason this always fazes me and I have to work it out with a diagram. So here's the recipe so I never have to do that again: select  * from    ExchangeRate where   StartDate < '31-DEC-2009'         and EndDate > '01-JAN-2009'   That is all!

  • Best way for a technical manager to stay up to date on technology

    - by JoelFan
My manager asked for a list of technical blogs he should follow to stay current on technology. His problem is he keeps hearing terms that he hasn't heard of (i.e. NoSql, sharding, agure, sevice bus, etc.) and he would prefer to at least have a fighting chance of knowing something about them without having to be reactive and looking them up. Also I think he wants to have a big picture of all the emerging technologies and where they fit in together instead of just learning about each thing in isolation. He asked about blogs but I'm thinking print magazines may also help.

  • Find the latest file by modified date

    - by Rich
If I want to find the latest file (mtime) in a (big) directory containing subdirectories, how would I do it? Lots of posts I've found suggest some variation of ls -lt | head (amusingly, many suggest ls -ltr | tail which is the same but less efficient) which is fine unless you have subdirectories (I do). Then again, you could find . -type f -exec ls -lt \{\} \+ | head which will definitely do the trick for as many files as can be specified by one command, i.e. if you have a big directory, -exec...\+ will issue separate commands; therefore each group will be sorted by ls within itself but not over the total set; the head will therefore pick up the lastest entry of the first batch. Any answers?

    - by Carolyn Cozart
The Temporary Flood and Cyclone Reconstruction levy (flood levy) will now apply to individuals for the 2011-2012 year. Tax Laws Amendment Bill 2011 was tabled in parliament in February 2011 and received royal assent in April 2011. The tax tables, however, were released last week in May 2011. To find out  the details of what is changing in Global Payroll Australia as well as targeted delivery dates, please visit the Knowledge Center on Support.Oracle.com. Click on the Knowledge tab. Simply type in keywords ‘Global Payroll Australia Position’. If further amendments are made, we will revise the document accordingly. • Set a custom start date for week numbers

    - by Graham Wager
Outlook has the ability to show week numbers down the side of the calendar in monthly view, and on the mini-calendar: In options, you can set the first week of the year, but only to the following three options: This is all very nice, but at work our "year" starts on a different date to match up with accounting periods - it's currently week 37 rather than 45! I'd like Outlook to be able to tell me which week it is at work, so is there any way I can set a custom date to be the first week of the year?

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’re a comic book aficionado (or just want to take a stroll down memory lane), this virtual newsstand shows you all the comics published for any month and year going all the way back to the 1930s. Courtesy of Mike’s Amazing World of Comics, the virtual newsstand lets you dial in a month, year, sorting style, and shows all publishers or select publishers. The covers are displayed in a grid where you can click through to see a larger version of the cover and read additional information about the comic. It’s a really neat way to check out trends in comic design and artwork over the years. Hit up the link below to take it for the spin. Have a cool comic book resource to share? • date and other commands no longer working in sh script

    - by williamsdb
I have a shell script that used to run find on Ubuntu 10.04 but since I have moved to 12.04 it doesn't work as before throwing the following messages: /home/checks.sh: 1: /home/checks.sh: date : not found find: invalid mode `0777\r' the script is as follows: date echo "" echo "Files changed in the last 24 hours" echo "==================================" find /var/www -mtime -1 | grep -iv '.log' echo "" echo "" echo "Files with permissions set to 777" echo "=================================" find /var/www -perm 0777 all lines work from the command line but not in the shell script any more. Can't find anything in the manual to suggest why.

  • Faking the date for a specific shell session

    - by Julien Nicoulaud
I'm certainly trying to achieve something weird here, but I want to fake the date locally for a shell session on GNU/Linux. I need to black-box test how a program behaves at different dates, and modifying the system-wide date can have unwanted side effects (cron jobs, messed up logs, etc). Any ideas ?

  • whois returns correct changed date but wrong nameservers

    - by sergio
I was just told by 1&1 customer support that "the date in the whois could show correctly while the nameservers information being the old one" I though the whole document was stamped at once, not "built" from different data sources. Am I being lied to? or how is that possible? The site is not visible yet, the whois shows correct date the change was made, and the nameservers are still wrong in that report/record/document and of course in the world's dns servers.

  • thunderbird-bin causing CPU (core) lockup (12.04, 64bit, up-to-date)

    - by david6
I have experienced 2-3 unexplained lockup over last 10 days. Today, I had a random lockup (no mouse, keyboard response, 100% CPU). But, when I finally switched (Ctrl-Alt-F1) to command line (it took several minutes) it told me that thunderbird-bin had locked a CPU. I ran this to resolve: pidof thunderbird-bin sudo kill #### However, after saving other work, I tried restarting Thunderbird. It went to 90%+ CPU, and within 20 seconds it locked again. Once I have more detail I will raise a bug (on Ubuntu Forums). Does anyone have any other suggestions, advice?
