• How to mount NTFS drive at startup

  I'm not even sure if this is the right question, but basically I have a partition with Windows 7 on it (named Acer in my Ubuntu places menu) that I have to click on every time I start the computer in order for my music to come up in Rhythmbox, since my music is stored on the windows drive. What I want to do is have the NTFS drive "Acer" mount automatically when I start the computer, so my music is there automatically.

  I created a LiveUSB of Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS using Pendrive Linux. -Created a separate 30GB partition using Windows 8 Disk Management -Disabled Secure Boot (Didn't find an option to disable EFI boot) -Disabled Fast Startup The laptop starts the GRUB menu shows up but it doesn't go beyond that no matter what option i choose. After choosing any option the screen goes blank but the power is still on i can see the power light.   What I have: Sony Vaio laptop (SVE1512E6EW) with preinstalled Windows 8. I disabled Secure Boot some time ago in BIOS. I already had Ubuntu (previous version) installed on it, but removed it some time ago. After that, the default Windows boot menu is showing up everytime I boot up computer, and the only entry is Windows 8. What I did: Burned Ubuntu 13.10 DVD Restarted computer and booted from it Chosen Install Ubuntu (not Try Ubuntu) Created new ext4 partition from free space Installed Ubuntu on it What happened: After the installation I restarted computer. Windows default boot menu showed up (just as before) and the only entry was still Windows 8. If you have any additional questions I will try to answer them as fast as possible.

  I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed and I am having some problems with it. I'd like to see if the problems are related to some customizations I did. Since one of my problems relate to the slow logout process, I don't want to use the live version. I want to actually install a new version in a separate partition along side my current version and then, after testing that new version and figuring out what I want, just removing the partition and going back to a single version of Ubuntu on this computer. Does anyone know how to do that without messing up my boot process?

  I just installed Ubuntu on my desktop which had Windows 7 installed on it. When I restart the machine after completing the installation, It directly loads windows, I don't see the grub menu. I tried using boot-repair using the LiveCD (both recommended fixes AND fixing the MBR), it did not help. What am I missing? I have done this at least 5 other times, on different machines, and have never faced this issue before.

• Windows not shown in Grub after installing 12.10

  I just installed 12.10 alongside Windows 7. I split my partition into two because disk reader during the installation didn't recognize Windows 7 as being installed on the computer. It installed correctly and I restarted only to find out it wasn't recognized in Grub also and booted straight to Ubuntu. I read this post and thought of using boot-repair would be fine but I gain this error: gpt detected. Please create bios-boot partition (>1MB, unformed filesystem, bios_grub flag). This can be performed via tools such as Gparted. Then try again. I've no idea what it means or what to do next. Suggestions would be appreciated and I have lost my Windows installation disk and I really don't want to have to go looking for it.

  I m completely new to all of this... I just want to install ubuntu because it is suppose to get rid of most of the virus problems, so anyway I was following online instructions to install ubuntu alongside windows 7 these are my laptop specifications. I tried booting with a pendrive using netbootin and other similar program but once I boot the laptop in ubuntu I click try without installing button and go to desktop then my mouse stops working.   Today, with the new version of Ubuntu, I have decided to install it in my laptot, but running with Windows 8, which is the OS I have installed now and that I don't want to uninstall, because I need some programs. I have downloaded it and burned into a CD. Everything in the "installation" goes right untill I have to choose where to install it. It doesn't recognise my Windows 8 and, moreover, it sees my disk as it was all empty space (500Gb).   I have Windows 8 Release Customer Preview on my laptop. I tried to install Ubuntu on it with Ubuntu Windows installer (I have always used this to install, although that was on Windows 7), it installs and asks to reboot, then immediately Windows 8 boots up. I do not have the option to choose what OS to boot. How can I boot to Ubuntu? VM is not exactly what I would like to use, but it is an option, however a last resort. Any help?

  Hi All, When I RDP into a win2k3 machine with the dual mon settings, I've noticed that there are a couple of usability problems: 1) Dialog boxes are popped up right in the middle of both monitors making it hard to read. 2) Windows are maximized to both monitors instead of just one. 3) The task bar spans across two monitors. (This is just a matter of preference. I prefer my task bar to span across just my primary monitor) I know that Splitview is a good tool that solves all these problems, but there's a price-tag to it. To be fair, $39 for a tool like this is not too bad at all. However, before I suggest this tool to my team and manager to get the licenses for it, are there any free alternatives that will solve the 3 above problems? -Steve

• Extending my desktop across two monitors with Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT

  When I played my old computer before I got this one, I was able to use the horizontal span. (Nvidia Geforce 6200 I believe) However, with this new computer, using vista and the 8800, the horizontal span option is gone, and all I have is dual veiw, which doesn't suit my needs. I play World of Warcraft on both my monitors, using CT_Viewport to keep my character and my veiwport on a single screen, while the majority of my addons lie on my other monitor. The problem with dual view is that the WoW will only stay on my primary monitor. Horizontal span would fix this easily, but there is no option for it. Any help regarding this?

  I am looking to buy a monitor to setup dual monitors for my laptop and was wondering if my laptop could handle 2 x 1080p. I have a Sony Vaio VPCF116FG which has a Nvidia GeForce 330M chip and 1GB dedicated graphics memory. The laptop also has a Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor (1.60 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 2.80 GHz) but I don't know if that's relevant(?). The laptop screen has a native resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080) so I'll be looking at buying a external monitor with 1080p to connect up using a HDMI cable. So, the question is, will my laptop be able to handle it's own 1080p screen AND an external 1080p screen? TIA, Charles

I've been running both monitors at 1920x1080 for some months now but last week the second monitor switched to a lower resolution and won't let me go back to 1920x1080. If I right click the Desktop and choose Screen Resolution from the menu, I get two items in the Display: drop down list BenQ G2222HDL D-SUB Display device on: VGA In the past 2 was always the same as 1. If I click Detect a third item appears Available display output on: ATI Radeon HD 4650 but if I use the Multiple displays: drop down list to use it says "No display detected" and then lets me choose from either "Connect anyway on S-Video" or "Connect anyway on Component", neither of which help. It seems like Windows 7 recognises the card is dual-head, and knows I have got two monitors, but can't link it all together. I have checked and all my drivers are up-to-date. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get the second monitor working properly again?

• How to repair the boot selection on grub?

  I had installed on my computer as a dual-boot: Debian Squeeze and Windows XP, so I decided to install Windows 8 just to test and then I would remove it and install in its place Debian Wheezy as dual-boot with Windows XP, that was already installed. During the Debian Wheezy installation, I deleted the Windows 8 partition to install Debian W. on its place. The problem is, that after the installation finished I rebooted the computer and on the grub menu was written: Debian Wheezy and Windows 8 (loader) - this Windows 8 (loader) is a boot manager as grub, and after the Win8 installation I was capable of choose between Win8 and WinXP. And when I select Windows 8 (loader) it says the Windows 8 is corrupted and is not possible to boot Windows XP. So, after that, I would like to know, how can I get Windows XP on the grub menu? Because I know its there (the Windows XP), but I can not boot it from grub. Observation: I already tried update-grub, but it only finds Debian W. and Windows 8.

• Screenshot shows black area with dual monitors on Ubuntu

  When using the built-in window screenshot function on Ubuntu (alt-printscreen) with dual monitors, a black rectangle covers about the top third of the captured window (or that area is not captured). When capturing the entire screen (printscreen), the left monitor shows the same size rectangle, but it doesn't cover the window, but pushes it down. It's as if the capture is using the smaller monitor's dimensions, and is not aware of the larger monitor. • Dual Screens with Widescreen monitors?

  I want to build a new computer and purchase new monitor(s). At my old job I had two 20" 4:3 and I absolutely loved this setup. However, the stores in my country only seem to have widescreen monitors nowadays, and the only 4:3 LCDs i have been able to find are 17". My question is: Do widescreens suck for using them as dual monitors? Can anyone with this setup comment on their experience with having multiple widescreen monitors? Would it be better to get three 17" 4:3 LCDs instead of two widescreens? If i go with widescreens, should i go with the smallest ones i can find? Purchasing a single big widescreen monitor is not an option for me, since being able to maximize an app on a specific area of the screen is a must have for me and im not willing to use "hacky" apps for this purpose that do a crappy job. Thanks in advance for your advise.
