• Contour graphs in JS or PHP ?

  Hi everybody, For a web application, I have to make a scientific graph. • using respond_to format.js to replace the content of a textarea on rails

  I have some saved text in my create controller. If it's not stressful, I'd like it to populate a textarea on the page with the saved text along with displaying the error message fields (which is what's already happening). I've used things like replace_html before, but I don't know if there's an easy way to get to textarea or text field IDs and just replace the value of the text. For now I'm just going to do some javascript but it would be nice to know the rails shortcut. edit: I wasn't in the right mindset because this app uses extjs and was trying to figure out how to do it this way. The text box is actually an ext status bar (same as here : http://www.extjs.com/deploy/dev/examples/statusbar/statusbar-demo.html ) which doesn't get created until the page is finished loading. When I try to enter commnands like the first poster suggested, I get "setvalue is not a function". Playing with firebug on the page I can get it to set the value after loading by using (whatever method to get it through ext or scriptaculous).value = "lol" but none of the page update things work with this.

• how can i check ID of a clicked element js

  how can i check if an ID of a clicked element is lets say 'target'. what i am trying to do is actually show and hide comment form on clicking in the text field and hide it when the user clicks out of the form. the problem is that if the user clicks Submit button the form hides and nothing is sent over. so i'll have to check if the submit buttons id matches the clicked element and not hide it in this case. i am using ruby on rails remote_form_for and onblur and onfocus events now. this is my bigger form that i am showing. <div id="bigArea" style="display:none"> <% remote_form_for @horses do |f|%> <%= f.text_area :description, {:onBlur=>"{$(bigArea').hide();$('smallField').show();}"} %> <%= f.submit "Submit"%> <% end %> </div> and this is the smaller form field that hides everytime you click in it. <div id="smallField"> <%= text_field_tag 'sth',"Click to comment, {:onFocus=>"$('bigArea').show();$('smallField').hide();"} %> </div> My question is how can i disallow the form to hide when a user clicks submit button? i suppose i should check which element's id has been clicked. and if it's submit button's ID i should not hide the form. Or maybe there is some other way to do all this? i would greatly appreciate any answers!

• xmlhttprequest responsetext coming for Accept header: text/xml , but server error for application/JS

  I have to get response text from a resourceindex page as JSON object. When I dont put a Accept header in the request, it shows me the xml response (i see it in an alert).. But I want the response as a JSON object.. What should I do. One solution would have been httpRequest.setRequestHeader('Accept', 'application/JSON'); but this gives me a server error :500 Also it says A message body writer for Java type, class ...., and MIME media type, application/octet-stream, was not found Can someone suggest on what to do to overcome this and get the response as JSON?

  We're using Backbone.js in one of my team's projects, and this is the first time I use it. I've seen many times this kind of code (it's coffeescript, but clear enough I think. @ means this.) clients_view = new Homespa.Views.Orders.Clients.SectionView(collection: @options.clients) @$("#clients-section").html(clients_view.render().el) clients_search_view = new Homespa.Views.Orders.Clients.SearchView @$("#clients_search_modal").html(clients_search_view.render().el) Isn't there a better way to do this? BUT I do not know how to send data reusing the same TCP from browser to server. so there is not the 3 way handshake and only 2 tcp packets.   Hi guys, I'm developing a Flash website (as3) where I need to be able to upload directly to YouTube by using the DATA API. However in order to do so, I had to use a proper HTML form on top of my flash object. Why? Because of the Browser Based Upload restictions. I first hide the form using JQuery and with a little CSS the form is display just where I want it. Within flash I use ExternalInterface.call() to show/hide the form when I need it! ExternalInterface.call("YTUploader.showIt"); The upload process is working great my only problem is that the form can be displayed easily... You just need a tool like firebug and you can use the form wherever you want on my flash app. So I was wandering which will be the best way to 'protect' this form or the best way to limit its access.   A webapp has as a central component a relatively heavy algorithm that handles geometric operations. There are 2 solutions to make the whole thing accessible from both high-end machines and relatively slower mobile devices. I will use RPC's if i detect that the user machine is ''slow'' or else if i detect that the user machine can handle it OK, then i provide to the webapp the script to handle it client side. Now what would be a reliable way to detect the speed of the user machine? I was thinking of providing a sample script as a test when the page loads and detect the time it took to execute that. Any ideas?

• JS Framework that doesn't use CSS selectors?

  A thing that I noticed about most JavaScript frameworks is that the most common way to find/access the DOM elements is to use CSS selectors. However this usually requires the framework to include a CSS selector parser, because they need to support selectors, that the browser natively doesn't, foremost the frameworks own proprietary extensions. I would think that these parsers are large and slow. Wouldn't it be more efficient to have something that doesn't require a parser, such a chained method calls? Some like: id("example").children().class("test").hasAttribute("href") instead of $("#example > .test[href]") Are there any frameworks around that do something like this? And how do they compare with jQuery and friends in regard to performance and size? EDIT: You can consider this a theoretical discussion topic. I don't plan to use anything other than jQuery in any practical projects in near furure. I was just wondering why there aren't any other, possibly better approaches.

• JavaScript: How to download JS asynchronously?

  On my web site, I'm trying to accomplishes the fastest page load as possible. I've noticed that it appears my JavaScript are not loading asynchronously. Picture linked below. How my web site works is that it needs to load two external JavaScript files: Google Maps v3 JavaScript, and JQuery JavaScript Once it loads these external javascript files, it then, and only then, can dynamically render the page. The reason why my page can't load until both Google Maps and JQuery are loaded is that - my page, based on the geolocation (using Gmaps) of the user will then display the page based on where they are located (e.g. New York, San Francisco, etc). Meaning, two people in different cities viewing my site will see different frontpages. Question: How can I get my JavaScript files to download asynchronously so that my overall page load time is quicker?

• nodejs, mongodb - How do I operate on data from multiple queries?

  Hi all, I'm new to JS in general, but I am trying to query some data from MongoDB. Basically, my first query retrieves information for the session with the specified session id. The second query does a simple geospacial query for documents with a location near the specified location. I'm using the mongodb-native javascript driver. All of these query methods return their results in callbacks, so they're non-blocking. This is the root of my troubles. What I'm needing to do is retrieve the results of the second query, and create an Array of sessionIds of all the returned documents. Then I'm going to pass those to a function later. But, I can't generate this array and use it anywhere outside the callback. Does anyone have any idea how to properly do this? http://dpaste.org/wXiE/

• Internet Explore works very slowly executing JS code

  There is a page that uses PHP to fetch search results from Google Search API and then it puts the results on the page some funny way in a circle. Code and may look crappy but seems that it works more or less fine in Firefox. When you enter a search query and click submit button or Next/Previous links, it fills the wheel with results. The problem is its work in IE. It works there very slowly and then it doesn't clear the wheel before filling in new data, but puts it over that. My friend asked me to help him with this code. Please give me a piece of advice how I can fix it. Thanks so much!

Straight to the point: I have this javascript: for(item=1;item<5;item++) { xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest(); xmlhttp.open("GET",'zzz.php', true); xmlhttp.send(); } And in PHP file something like this: usleep(5);die('ok'); Now the problem is javascript seems to be waiting for each ajax call to be completed before sending another one. So the first response gets back after approx. 5 seconds, next after 10 seconds and so on. That's a very simplified version of what I do, since the real script involves using cURL in PHP and jQuery as JS lib. But the problem remains the same. Why do responses come back in 5 second intervals?

  Hi everyone, I am working on developing a Travel website which uses XML API's to get the data. However i am relatively new to XML and outputting it. I have been experimenting with using PHP to output a test XML file, but currently the furthest iv got is to only output a few records. As it the questions states i need to know which technology will be best for this project. Below iv included some points to take into consideration.
