• How do you approach database design?

I have gone through in school db normalization and stuff like that but it has been a couple of years ago and I have never had experience with relational database design except for school. So how you do you approach database from a web app perspective? How do you begin and what do you look out for? What are flags for caution?

• Flash Webcam non responsive Ubuntu 11.10

  I've got the same problem as this gentleman: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/+question/176541 Where the webcam settings / access does not work at all / is completely unresponsive in Ubuntu 11.10. I've tried webcam access in Facebook, Google+, my own code + a number of tutorials/demos and none work. What happens is the settings dialogue is completely unresponsive. Clicking tabs or buttons does nothing. In the question linked to a suggested answer is to run Unity 2D. Unfortunately this does not work for me (the exact same thing happens). I've also tried Gnome 3 which also does not work. Note that it is only the webcam settings that don't work. YouTube videos and annoying banners work just fine. Does anyone know of a workaround for this (except going back to 11.04) or if they've fixed this in 12.04? - also, are any of you experiencing the same thing?

  Possible Duplicate: What “version naming convention” do you use? I am currently debating between the traditional versioning convention [major].[minor].[revision] and my own, almost whimsical, [YYYY].[MM].[DD].[hh][mm] for a new project I am starting. I understand that [major].[minor].[revision] is probably the most popular versioning method on the planet and it is indeed pretty straightforward and reasonable, except that determining which changes merit the label "major", "minor" or even "revision" could be... subjective. A versioning system based on a timestamp is purely non-subjective and guarantees uniqueness. Which one would you choose for your project and why?

• Touchpad stopped working after suspend, never woke up again

  I have a Toshiba L650, installed (dual boot) Ubuntu 10.10. Touchpad worked fine until I tried for the first time to suspend (I closed the screen on the keyboard). The system never woke up again. Reset (battery disconnected and then reconnected), restart of the system, disk checks, and so on. After that, everything works fine except the Touchpad, completely dead. Rebooted again. The problem persists. Any hints? Thanks, Luca.

• Is there any new method for link-backs [on hold]

  As all SEOs know that google is trying its very best to kill SEO and linkbacks are quite a difficult task now. Although content is the key but my boss is still possessed with linkbacks. I can not do directory posting, link exchange, paid linking, web 2.0 and blog commenting as they are spam now. I do not see what other choice i have except forum posting and article posting. Can someone suggest new method to acquire link backs ? I know almost all traditional methods so don't say press release or etc. If you really have something out of the box or not very much common please share.

• Why can't I use Unity 3D on a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series with FGLRX drivers?

  With a brand new install of 12.04 on my Dell Inspiron M5030, Unity 3D appears to load everything but the icons in the top left, and I am unable to click on anything. Unity 2D seems to works fine however. I have done nothing except install Synaptic Package manager and follow this guide to install FGLRX Drivers under Settings ? Additional Drivers, the driver shows as installed and functioning. Also after running: /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p, I get this: OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series OpenGL version string: 3.3.11653 Compatibility Profile Context Not software rendered: yes Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: yes GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: yes I am unsure as to what the problem is. I have tried the non-proprietary drivers, I could not get them to work either, but I would be willing to try again.

  I have a spaceship and I've created a "boost" functionality that speeds up my spaceship, what effects should I implement to create the impression of high speed? I was thinking of making everything except my spaceship blurry but I think there would be something missing. Any ideas? Btw. I am working in XNA C# but if you aren't familiar to XNA describing some effects is still useful. The Game is 3d and i've attached some printscreens of the game This is in normal mode ( none boosted ) and here is the boosted mode ( the craft speeds up forward while the camera speeds in its normal speed , the non boosted speed )

• Checker AI in visual basic not working [on hold]

  I am trying to a make checkers in visual basic with ai. I am using the minimax algorithm (or at least what I understand of it) and it works, except the ai is retarded and plays like it is trying to loose and I tried to switch around the min and the max but the results are IDENTICAL. I am pissed of and have been trying to fix it for over a week now, I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out here. I have 3 years experience of programming (in Java, only about of month of VB experience) and I always am able to solve all my errors on my own so I don't know why I can't get this to work.   Just out of curiosity, I want to know opensource tools or projects that can add some interesting features to indie games, preferably those that could only be found on big-budget games. EDIT: As suggested by The Communist Duck and Joe Wreschnig, I'm putting the examples as answers. EDIT 2: Please do not post tools like PyGame, Inkscape, Gimp, Audacity, Slick2D, Phys2D, Blender (except for interesting plugins) and the like. I know they are great tools/libraries and some would argue essential to develop good games, but I'm looking for more rare projects. Could be something really specific or niche, like generating realistic trees and plants, or realistic AI for animals.

• Is there any negative impact with similar page titles and descriptions on similar sites?

  Currently we have Canadian versions of some websites. We are going to create some American versions, which essentially have everything the same, except the search results are geo-specific to the USA. The format for the results page title and descriptions will remain the same, ie {0} in {1} | Find more {0} etc etc etc... {1}. The search term will most-likely be the same between both sites. Will the relative similarity in the page titles and descriptions between the CDN and USA sites have any negative SEO impact, where the geo location would be the most significant difference?

  So far I've written web sites in PHP, except for a pet project of mine written in Python. I'd like to start learning C# for use on the web, but I have no idea where to start. I know nothing of .Net. Are there any good tutorials or online books etc. which give a brief intro to the .Net environment (specifically C#, and specifically for the web)? I'm not even sure what I need to install. Visual Studio I guess, but what else? Anything special, or will VS do the trick?

• Unable to connect to iFolder server

  I tried to install iFolder on Ubuntu 10.10 server 64 bit using this guide. Everything "worked" except: If I try to acccess the server with http://myurl/admin I get the error-message "Unable to connect to the iFolder server." Has anyone succeeded with this guide, or is there an iFolder specialist who could help me with the last steps? Update 1: I could connect to the /admin-Interface by not changin anything in the config-script. Changing the ServerName in anything else than localhost brings back the error. And changing username and/or password has no affect.

• Magento Bulk Product Import + Modules Nightmare

  Have 5,000 products in CSV file File has been re-saved as UT8 file in google documents and exported to CSV from excel File loads perfectly with all fields in demo of magento store manager (except we dont want to buy it:) When trying to upload in regular Magento..keep getting error messages on column duplicates....yes we have hundreds of duplicates as the titles of products in fields correspond with different sizes, etc...no way around it Any solutions around this or any open source software similar to store manager that can do the trick. Ready to give up and go to paid solution such as Big Commerce Also, Uploaded a bunch of free modules/keys...of open source bulk import products from magentocommerce but I cant find them anywhere in the main admin panel to use...there is no menu item for them anywhere??

• Pong Collision Help in C# w/ XNA

  Edit: My goal is to have it function like this: Ball hits 1st Quarter = rebounds higher (aka Y++) Ball hits 2nd Quarter = rebounds higher (using random value) Ball hits 3rd Quarter = rebounds lower (using random value) Ball hits 4th Quarter = rebounds lower (aka Y--) I'm currently using Rectangle Collision for my collision detection, and it's worked. Now I wish to expand it. Instead of it simply detecting whether or not the paddle/ball intersect, I want to make it so that it can determine what section of the paddle gets hit. I wanted it in 4 parts, with each having a different reaction to impact. My first thought is to base it on the Ball's Y position compared to the Paddle's Y position. But since I want it in 4 parts, I don't know how to do that. So it's essentially be if (ball.Y > Paddle.Y) { PaddleSection1 == true; } Except modified so that instead of being top half/bottom half, it's 1st Quarter, etc.

• Editable block: CMS or PHP script?

  I'm designing a Website for a restaurant. The site will be fairly static except for a 'specials' block which the client will need to update on a daily basis. I'm more of a designer/front-end developer so I was wondering if I was better off trying to make a block editable in PHP (a language I hardly ever deal with) or just create the website in a user-friendly CMS such as Wordpress (which I have some experience with) or Expression Engine (which I have no experience with but I'm told is a favorite in the design community)... certainly not Drupal, because even though I have theming experience with it, I think it would be a little overkill for just one editable block in a five-page site. I'm leaning towards an easy to use CMS because I'm really just not comfortable writing my own PHP especially since I guess a PHP solution would also require an authentication solution so only the client could get in to edit their info. Any insight would be appreciated!

• Is it normal to not have desktop effects after installing on an Asus N53S?

  I've just installed 11.10 and so far so great, except I just discovered (after looking at another installation) I'm missing some effects. First of all, I am using unity 3d (I chose ubuntu at the login menu), and have already the correct nvidia drivers. Yet, my launcher is the same from unity 2d, the same as the app switcher, and when dragging windows to screen corners, they don't get grabbed. This "error" was present since the begining, so I was not able to detect it. Please help, I want to have an ubuntu experience as nice as everyone else. EDIT 1: I'm using an Asus N53S. My graphic card is Nvidia geforce GT540M. It says cuda, if that matters.

• ISO checksum menu in nautilus

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 x64, Unity, and Nautilus 3.2.1 I want to be able to perform checksum ISO in Nautilus. Once completed, the other menus appear, except the menu for "checksum verification". Then, when I run gksu nautilus-actions-config-tool I just asked to enter a user password, and .... nothing happens. What should I do, to bring up the "checksum verification" menu? • ubuntu broke my windows boot

  I was installing ubuntu on pendrive and once finished I needed to run windows a bit, even though I chose erase and install ON THE PENDRIVE it altered my hdd boot sector When I remove the ubu cd and pendrive it should only boot from hdd (windows) but it gives Error: no such device : blablabla(numerbes and letters) Grub rescue _ If I place the pendrive inside it asks me whether to start windows or linux (windows works here) I need to run windows without the pendrive, how can I remove grub from the hdd and also run ubuntu from the pendrive(once I remove grub from the hdd) || THX ArK, your information help me do wonders! :) || Now... it seems that without grub i can not boot the ubuntu from the pendrive anymore, blank screen and nothing loads(i did check the ubuntu with the grub from the hdd, and everything inside it worked perfectly (except the clock, it didnt find my local hour...) ) New problem: it seems that grub which is now on the pendrive is always asking me whether to boot from windows or ubuntu F*ck of course i want to boot ubuntu otherwise i would stick the pen inside the computer

  When I search for Ride On + my site's name, I see that it's indexed. But when I search for Green Horse + my site's name, I don't see my site appearing in the results anywhere! Here's my code: <td><a href="#" title="Green Horse Ride">Ride On</a></td> Does this mean that title attributes are not indexed/shown by Google at all? What is better to use, alt? What are the other alternatives except title and alt?

  A new post Getting Started with the Coherence Memcached Adaptor from David Felcey shows how PHP memcached calls can automatically be routed to store data in Oracle Coherence 12c. This is possible now Coherence 12.1.3 supports Memcached clients using the Binary Memcached protocol. David's post shows how the Coherence Memcached adaptor can be configured as a proxy service that runs in the Coherence cluster. There's nothing particular to configure in the PHP application, except to enable memcached.use_sasl = 1 So what is Coherence? • How to stop programs on starting from returning to log in screen?

  I'm not a computer nerd but have been able to fix Ubuntu/Linux problems in the pass two years with a Google search but this on has me stumped. I upgraded to 12.04 about thirty days ago and all was well except that every time I tried to load KeePassX it would go to the login screen. I installed KeePass2 and all seemed to work. Last week I tried to load Bibble5 (Raw photo editor) and it would try to load and then back to the login screen. After a few days I gave up and downloaded Corel After Shot Pro (Corel's now owns Bibble5) and it has the same problem. Could someone please head me into the steps I need to follow to find out what is the cause.   I'm WebDesiner and i've currently only a few clients for making website. i've unlimited hosting account and i want to host their websites in my account without reseller account ( actually it is not needed for constness). only my client's need is ftp access to their personal directory. so as i questioned it is possible to give them saperate phpmyadmin access in this strategy ? as per my knowledge it is done with "addon" domain pointing on my hosting account's directory with cpanel, am i right ? or there is another solution for it except reseller account ?

• Why is using C++ libraries so complicated?

  First of all, I want to note I love C++ and I'm one of those people who thinks it is easier to code in C++ than Java. Except for one tiny thing: libraries. In Java you can simply add some jar to the build path and you're done. In C++ you usually have to set multiple paths for the header files and the library itself. In some cases, you even have to use special build flags. I have mainly used Visual Studio, Code Blocks and no IDE at all. All 3 options do not differ much when talking about using external libraries. I wonder why was there made no simpler alternative for this? Like having a special .zip file that has everything you need in one place so the IDE can do all the work for you setting up the build flags. Is there any technical barrier for this?
