Project Assumptions: Enterprise business applications Business logic needed between user and database Data validation necessary Service-oriented (prefer RESTful services) Multi-year maintenance plan Support hundreds of users 3-tier Team Favors: Persistant layer <== Domain layer <== UI layer Service boundary between at least persistant layer and domain layer. Domain layer might have service boundary between it. Translations between each layer (clean DTO separation) Hand roll persistance unless we can find creative yet elegant automation 2-tier Team Favors: Entity Framework + WCF Data Service layer <== UI layer Business logic kept in WCF Data Service interceptors Minimal translation between layers - favor faster coding So that's the high-level argument. • How to get access under testing

  This question is related to: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3027705/experiences-with-language-converters I just can tell I searched the web for quite a few days but hardly found anything about somewhat "proper" test in access. I found some framworks like accessunit but that's Unit testing, what abouut the forms? What about the different reports etc. A counter-example in "testing" is e.g the rails or Seaside or Smalltalk area. Where testing is thought of as integral part. But I have not found anything comparable for Access based solutions. Maybe some of you know better?

I've also included some elements from Scrum in the development process. The question is what the requirement specifications should contain in a RUP-model? Is it functional and non-functional requirements? And what should be included in a technical analysis and security requirements for RUP? Can’t find any information. Notes about this would be helpful. • Usability: Save changes using "Apply" button or after every single change?

  I am interested in hearing opinions and experiences of fellow developers on topic of designing user interface, usability AND maintainability-wise. Common approach is to allow users to tweak options and after form gets "dirty", enable "Apply" button, and user has possibility to back out by pressing cancel. This is most common approach on Windows platform (I believe MS usability guidelines say to do so as well). Another way is to apply changes after every single change has been made to options. Example, user checks some checkbox, and change is applied. User changes value of some text box, and change is applied after box looses focus, etc. You get the point. This approach is most common on Mac OSX. Regardless of my personal opinion (which is that Apple is better at usability, but software I usually write targets Windows users), what do you people think?

• is XULRUNNER suitable as a replacement for other C++ desktop applications frameworks such as QT?

  XulRunner/Gecko seems to be really interesting for developing gui-intensive applications (by using widely used technologies such as HTML / CSS / SVG / XUL / Javascript). But the underlaying C++ APIS (XPCOM, NECKO, ...) looks so old and complex. Moreover the general lack of documentation/developper tools is really frightening. On the other hand, QT have a quite nice platform, and is well documented and supported. The UI part is really "traditional" though. What are your experiences with XULRUNNER, specially compared to other C++ desktop applications frameworks such as QT/GTK/MFC...? What is missing? What is awesome? Side question: If I wanted to migrate an existing MFC app to a cross platform C++ desktop application framework, would it be wise to use XULRUNNER instead of QT or GTK?

• Easy way for Crystal Reports to MS SQL Server Reporting Services conversion

  Is there a way to easily convert Crystal Reports reports to Reporting Services RDL format? We have quite a few reports that will be needing conversion soon. I know about the manual process (which is basically rebuilding all your reports from scratch in SSRS), but my searches pointed to a few possibilities with automatic conversion "acceleration" with several consulting firms. (As described on http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/reporting/partners/crystal-migration.mspx). Do any of you have any valid experiences or recomendations regarding this particular issue? Are there any tools around that I do not know about?

  I want to build a scalable dynamic Web Application. I have never programmed an Object Oriented language before. Or, let's just say I am completely new to programming, because the previous experiences aren't worth talking about. I know I have a really big task ahead of me ^^ but I wanted to get into coding for the last 10 years and now that I'm finally doing it, I would like to know how to get there in the most efficient way. Any good books/tutorials you could recommend? Would it really make sense to learn other, better documented languages before learning RoR? Or would it be better for a beginner to learn C# with ASP.NET first? Thank you for your help in advance ;-)

• Concerns with SoapUI Pro when Updating Web Services

  This may unfortunately be a very open-ended question, but a coworker of mine has shared concerns about using SoapUI Pro as our automated regression testing tool primarily on the basis that seemingly trivial WSDL changes can cause headaches for the QA crew. My coworker's particularly concerned that if we update the WSDL, even with a name change, we'll need to touch and update each existing test. As I understand it SoapUI Pro offers a refactoring tool to handle this for you. What are your experiences with SoapUI Pro and updating your web services? Am I missing something?

• iOS app rejected by itunes team for copyright when embedding video from youtube

  I have created a simple app for my client with his selection of youtube videos embedded via iframe player and html5. The app got approved in android store whereas itunes rejected it claiming below, "Apps may not use protected third party material such as trademarks, copyrights, patents or violate 3rd party terms of use. • MongoDB or CouchDB - fit for production?

  I was wondering if anyone can tell me if MongoDB or CouchDB are ready for a production environment. I'm now looking at these storage solutions (I'm favouring MongoDB at the moment), however these projects are quite young and so I foresee that I'm going to have to work quite hard to convince my manager that we should adopt this new technology. What I'd like to know is: 1) Who is using MongoDB or CouchDB today in a production environment? 2) How are you using MongoDB/CouchDB? 3) What problems (if any) did you come across when you adopted this new storage mechanism (and how did you overcome them)? 4) How did you deal with any migration issues that you had to deal with? 5) Do you have any good/bad experiences with either of these solutions that you'd like to share? The xml scheme definition states that it is of the type xsd:decimal: <xsd:restriction base="xsd:decimal"> <xsd:minInclusive value="0.0"/> <xsd:maxInclusive value="1.0"/> </xsd:restriction> I have a sitemap generator that uses up to 10 positions after decimal point. Where often only the last few positions differ. These numbers are perfectly right according to the xsd, but yet i found some pages(3,4) that state that only 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, .., 1.0 are valid values. How will the search engines react to such a sitemap? Will some just round the value? I know that it is unlikely that someone can provide an answer to that question, unless he works for that search engine, but i think experiences will also do.

• Payment Gateways for Mid-Sized Business?

  My company is a bit unhappy with the support we've been getting from Cybersource and we're about to embark on a billing re-write so we're taking the opportunity to look at other gateways. Anyone have any positive or negative experiences they'd like to share? I'd rather not hear about small website gateways like paypal, we run tens of thousands of transactions and millions a year. If you know, I'd love to hear how much you're paying in transaction/gateway fees too. We're primarily a .NET shop if you'd like to speak to a particular API. Gateway must support the big 4 credit cards (mc, visa, disc, amex) and ACH. Thanks in advance for the help from the hive mind. :)

  When you step back and look at ... the nature of animals, insects, plants and the problems they have organically solved perhaps even the nature and balance of the universe Have you ever been able to solve a problem by deriving an approach from nature? I've heard of Ant Colony Algorithms being able to optimize supply chain amongst other things. Also Fractal's being the "geometry of nature" have been applied to a wide range of problems. Now that spring is here again and the world is coming back to life I'm wondering if anybody has some experiences they can share. • Ruby on Rails: How can I authenticate different user types from one place?

  Hi everyone! This is my first post on Stack Overflow. I am trying to build a system that authenticates three types of user with completely different site experiences: Customers, Employers, and Vendors. I'm thinking of using a polymorphic 'User' table (using AuthLogic) with username, password, and user_type (+ AuthLogic's other required fields). If this is a good way to go, how do I set this up so after authenticating an user_id with a user_type the standard way, I can direct the user to the page that's right for them? Thanks.

• Implementing a "flag as spam/offensive" system

  I am looking for a community moderated way of managing/eliminating spam and offensive content. Functionality similar to StackOverflow and many other sites seems like a good way to go. Although I'm sure this could greatly vary based on specific needs, I am curious about the backend mechanism/algorithm --that is, has anyone had success using something like "3 strikes and you're out" -- the flagged post is automatically closed/deleted after 3 reports by users with the required credentials. Would something like this likely be effective or would it require a more complex solution to ensure honesty and effectiveness. Any thoughts / experiences would be great

• Redmine & Git integration

  I am considering moving from svn and Trac to git and Redmine. I'm just wondering what everyone's experience is of this. How well does git integrate with Redmine? I'm pretty set on my decision to change from svn to git - our distributed work, and need to frequently branch and merge would make life considerably easier with git. But we would possibly need to split things into multiple projects for this. From what I have been reading, git and multiple projects don't integrate too smoothly with Trac. That aside, in my investigations into git, Redmine has also caught my attention, and some of the features look very useful. However, I haven't found as many user experiences of git and Redmine as what I'd like (possibly due to my lack of searching skills...) and so would like to hear your opinions and examples.

• Crystal Reports not included in Visual Studio 2010 – What are the consequences for the introduction

  Yesterday I stumbled over the information that Crystal Reports will no longer be included in Visual Studio 2010. Instead – it will be provided as a free download, but with a separate installation and a separate release date. According to the linked information the release of CR will be later than that of VS. My projects depend in parts on CR and I want to shift early to VS 2010. So there are some related questions: Can I use VS 2010 with the older 2008 version of CR? Do I need a workstation with a preinstalled VS 2008 or is the installation of the CR redistribution package sufficient to run that? Are there any experiences with the VS Beta concerning that?

• WindowsPhone App data connection FAILS in MarketPlace published App but WORKS in Visual Studio development (same XAP)

  Tearing my hair out(!) My last App update has been accepted and released by MarketPlace but the remote server data connection does NOT work/connect from the downloaded App (from MarketPlace). However, the same App (the accepted XAP) when I'm running it from Visual Studio, using the same remote server address works just fine. WHY!... Has anyone else ever run into anything like this? Here's the remote path: http://www.streamcommunication.com/ZenAwaken/DownloadableCollections.xml I can load that to a browser and retrieve the XML When I'm in Visual Studio I can connect via that path and retrieve the file and consume the data BUT!! The exact same XAP which has been accepted and distributed by Windows Phone marketplace FAILS. Is it possible that MarketPlace does something (encryption?) to the XAP that would corrupt the path string? Any thoughts or experiences would be very helpful! Tom

• Why do I need to give my options a value attribute in my dropdown? JQuery.

  So far in my web developing experiences, I've noticed that almost all web developers/designers choose to give their options in a select a value like so: <select name="foo"> <option value="bar">BarCheese</option> // etc. // etc. </select> Is this because it is best practice to do so? I ask this because I have done a lot of work with jQuery and dropdown's lately, and sometimes I get really annoyed when I have to check something like: $('select[name=foo]').val() == "bar"); To me, many times that seems less clear than just being able to check the val() against BarCheese. So why is it that most web developers/designers specify a value paramater instead of just letting the options actual value be its value?

  I once read a blog post and cannot find it anymore. drat! It was about a guy who setup a wcf service (I guess RIA, but could have been something else) exposing the model via IQueryable to the querystring. Sou you could say http://host/articles/123/ratings and you'd get a list (soap or json) of serialized Rating entities (the properties which had some attribute attached) which pertained to an article with id 123. All this with nHibernate / nh linq in the back and in surprisingly few lines of code. Anyone knows what I am talking about? Experiences, suggestions?

• Are folks using the VB6 "Common Controls Replacement Project" controls? Any caveats or showstoppers?

  I'm considering using the VB6 Common Controls Replacement Project controls and would like to see what other's experiences with them are. Specifically: What do you need to distribute with them? (I assume just the .OCX file) Do I need to register the .ocx file or just include in the app directory? Do these controls depend on any other ocx's? (There is mention, for example in the Progress Bar replacement that it is using COMCTL32.DLL but the .DEP file does not list that DLL. Are they at least as robust as the controls they replace?

• is there a limit on the number of times navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPostion can be called ?

  Hi all, This is may not be a true programming question but deals with geolocation Api, hence hoping StackOverflow is the right place for this. I'm calling the navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition at every 3 seconds interval. After 10-15 tries the responses stop. So i'm wondering is there a limit on the number of calls being made, Or is it because i'm testing it with a desktop and hence instead of giving back the same response each time the API is waiting for a change of location. Anyone has any experiences to share ? Thanks
