• Messaging strategies to connect different systems

  I have a system to handle Applications online and a different system to send SMS/Email notifications to applicants on completion using web services. I can't guarantee the availability of the SMS/Email gateway. Option 1 After an application is complete, place a message on a JMS queue. A Message Driven bean receives the message and make a call for the web service, if it fails leave the message on the queue. I suspect (please correct if incorrect) that if the gate way is offline the continuosly try to send the message which might use up valuable resources. Can the above option be refined are are there any other messaging strategies that can be used?

I absolutely cannot get my index.jsp to show this bean, I've tried using a usebean, I've tried storing it on the session, and now I'm directly placing it in the model. Nothing works. Spring 3 has been like every other spring release, intensely frustrating.

• Text input for multi-valued attribute

  I need to create an input form that will allow a user to enter any number of values for a particular attribute. I've tried several approaches, all of which seem to have various levels of failure. The latest model bean looks something like: public class Product { private String name; private String[] tags; ...accessors... } The input fields look something like: <h:inputText id="name" value="#{product.name}"></h:inputText> <h:inputText id="tag0" value="#{product.tag[0]}"></h:inputText> My plan was to allow the user is to use javascript to add additional form fields as needed. This type of setup gives me a 'Target Unreachable' error. What am I missing? I am using JSF 1.1 on WebSphere 6.1

• Unique number generation with Java Server Faces

  I am developing an application for a medical channelling centre where multiple users reserve bookings for doctors with JSF and JPA. A sequence number is unique to the Doctor, Date and Session. I tried to get a unique sequence number from counting the previous bookings and add one, but if two requests comes at the same time, two bookings get the same number causing trouble to functionality. How can I get unique number in this case? Can I use an application wide bean to generate it? (I thought it is not practicle to get the unique number from the database sequence number as there are several doctors, sessions and daily they have to have different booking number.)

• In JSF, how to handle repeating over a list that mutates

  Hello, In a JSF page, I am iterating over a list of items provided by a session-scoped backing bean. The list needs to be kept up-to-date, so it is replaced with a fresh list every X minutes by a thread (in a thread-safe way). On my page, for each item I provide some text inputs and an "Update" button. If the list is refreshed before I hit "Update", the update does not happen (which is my problem). I happen to be using a4j:repeat, but I think this could also apply to other methods of iteration, including using dataTables. Any thoughts on how I can do this in a non-hackish way? Thanks!

  I have this code to create a configuration of a java client to connect to a JBoss application server: System.setProperty( "java.security.auth.login.config", "auth.conf" ); LoginContext auth = new LoginContext( "myAuth", new LoginCallbackHandler( username, password ) ); auth.login(); The file auth.conf contains the following lines: myAuth { org.jboss.security.ClientLoginModule required; }; Now, somewhere else in the code (the LoginContext auth isn't known there) I have an EJB that does a initialContext.lookup( jndiName ) and a narrow() to access a Bean on the JBoss application server. This narrow only succeeds if the login information of the first step was correct. Question How does the login information propagate from the LoginContext to the narrow()? I don't see any connection between these two places. And further, how could I do two or more different logins inside of one client?

  I am dynamically creating classes which contain spring beans, however the beans are not getting instantiated or initialised, leaving them as null. How do I make sure that a dynamically created class creates all of its spring beans properly? This is how I am dynamically creating the class: Class ctransform; try { ctransform = Class.forName(strClassName); Method handleRequestMethod = findHandleRequestMethod(ctransform); if (handleRequestMethod != null) { return (Message<?>) handleRequestMethod.invoke(ctransform.newInstance(), message); } } This leaves all spring bean objects within ctransform (of type strClassName) as null.

• Inherit appenders from calling instance in log4j or logback

  In my program I have 2 separate streams of logging events (calling them streams for simplicity, in reality its 2 appenders). Stream1 contains client logging and Stream2 contains control logging. Now this might seem easy, except that certain classes can be both in the client logging and server logging, depending on the situation. Complicating this further is the fact that a command that a client wants takes place in 2 separate threads (one being fetched randomly from a thread pool), so any kind of tracking with MDC or NDC isn't possible. What would really simplify this is if the logger could inherit the appenders from the calling instance. That way I can setup 2 appenders for 2 loggers and be done. However I have no idea how to do it cleanly or easily. Can anyone offer any advice on how to do so? Note: If something needs to be passed around, I do have a event bean that gets passed to everything in the chain that can be used if necessary.

  Hi, In my web application, I use strust2 url tag to pass parameters like id etc., For example, I use a link to delete an entity and I use param to pass the id of the entity to be deleted. And I follow this throughout my web app for adding, editing, deleting an entity. During run time, sometimes, I don't get the params to be stored in my action's bean properties. When I see the link that is generated, I get something like <a href='/projit1/p/discuss/viewDiscussion.action?d=11&amp;amp;amp;projid=11&amp;amp;disid=4'> What are these amps for ? why do they sit in between the action calls (made by link via url tag actions ) ? By the time I traverse back and forth in my web app, I get 10s and 20s of amp sitting in the request URL. What is the problem here ? Please help.

• Why can't I have static public fields in my managed beans?

  I just started using the Netbeans 7.1 beta and it is calling out errors of a type which I have never seen before. Specifically: A managed bean with a public field should not declare any scope other than @Dependent. The fields it is complaining about are public static final. I can understand the restriction on non-static fields, but I can't think of a good reason this would not be allowed for a static field. Unfortunately I use a lot of them since I don't like having constants in my code. I note that even though I get the red dot in the margin in the editor, the maven-driven build still works and GlassFish still runs my application the way I would expect. So what is my denoument on this issue? Am I going to have to move my static fields elsewhere or is there another way of handling this?

  Hi! I have setup subversion 1.6.5 on Fedora. I have decided to use a single repository for multiple projects. I have added one project, projA, to the repository. I will have more projects to add to the repository in future. If I try to add next project with the command 'svn import . file:///path/to/repos' gives svn: File already exists: filesystem '/usr/local/svn-repos/proj-test/db', transa ction '1-1', path '/trunk'. The new projB is being added to the trunk directory of projA. I have read the section "Adding Projects" in http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.1/ch05s04.html In that book, projects are added at once. But,I would like to add them one by one as new projects become ready to go. What is the proper command and/or how that can be done? Thanks. Banani

  I'm starting to delve into using Spring DM and OSGi services in an RCP application. I've created a service which is used by another bundle in the RCP application. It does a lookup of the service via calls to getBundleContext().getServiceReference() using the explicit bundle names and service class names. I'm not using DI anywhere yet. The issue I'm running into is that the service that is returned in the requesting bundle is a singleton. At times I notice a threading issue since it is a "stateful" service. How do I configure the application to get back a new service instance with each call? • Transient variables are not captured properly on form submission

  My User entity class have several member variables (e.g. String firstName) which are persisted and some transient variables (e.g. transient boolean selected) which are not. I have used the transient variable to capture a checkbox selection, but invariably the value never gets set and procesed properly until I set another bean value along with it. i.e. If User has firstName (mapped to a text field) and selected (mapped to a checkbox) If I just selected the value doesn't seem to be set on an update If I had selected the checkbox and the firstName field, the "selected" value is captured properly Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

  I have a collection of states, that I want to cache for the life of the application, preferably after it is called for the first time. I'm using EclipseLink as my persistence provider. What is the correct way to configure this query so that it is only ever read once from the database, preferably across all sessions? I have a javascript that edits a hidden field in my jsf page: <h:inputHidden id="data" value="" /> and when I click on "Submit" I would like to get the new value of this HTML field that was modified by the javascript. I've looked into FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getRequestParameterMap().get("data"); But that seems only to work if it is passed in as an <f:param/>.   I have several JSF pages that are initializing and accessing ManagedBeans that are not even used on that page. This is creating a really hairy problem for initialization. I either have to make them all session scope and continually make calls to re-inialize or take the performance hit of having them read large amounts of data from the DB whenever they decide to initialize. Some of the managed beans being accessed are not even defined on the page in question. I have done some optimization based on comments related to multiple calls to getters, but I still have the issue that I have a very specialized (and expensive to initialize) bean that is getting called when I don't want it initialized. Any insight into why/what JSF calls might do something like this. I have a very complex page making use of JSTL, Tomahawk and standard JSF tags. I could include code, but its very complex and sensitive in nature.

I would like to add a Java applet to the web page but I could not find the JSF component type to correspond to the <applet> tag. So My questions are - What is the JSF component type for an applet? • PropertyUtils performance

  I have a problem where i need to walk through an object graph and pick out a particular property value. My original solution caches a linked list of property names that need to be applied in order to get from point A to point B in the object graph. I then use apache commons PropertyUtils to iterate through the linked list calling getProperty(Object bean, String name) until i have reached point B. My question is around how this will perform compared to perhaps cahing the Method objects for each step. What is propertyUtils doing under the bonnet? Is it doing a lot of reflection / heavy lifting?
