Weird PCI bug: lots of missed packets, or data comes in "bursts"

I have an ABIT KN9 motherboard. It has one PCI-e x16 slot, three PCI-e x4 slots and two legacy PCI. My problem is with the legacy PCI (which I shall just call "PCI".) I currently have an Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT (a low end card) installed in the x16 slot and a TV card in PCI #1; the x4 slots are unused, as is PCI #2. I plan to upgrade the graphics card soon, the current card was spare. I sometimes install a USB expander in PCI #2 but it causes a lot of problems - see below. The problem is under Linux (Ubuntu 10.10, Linux 2.6.35-22-generic), but probably under all operating systems (I have not yet been able to test Windows, but I suspect it will do the same as the problems occur on the BIOS/POST side too, e.g. when using a USB keyboard on the expander the keyboard will not work at all) PCI has an enourmous delay, and packets arrive in large chunks. For example, when using the USB expander, my USB mouse lags and jumps in large steps every second or so, while using the motherboard USB does not present this problem. My TV card will only do one or two frames per second, and the program (xawtv) usually times out and crashes. In dmesg, I'm getting messages like: bttv0: timeout: drop=74, irq=154/100476, risc=31f6256c, bits: VSYNC HSYNC OFLOW RISCI for my TV card, and similar timeout issues for my USB expander with a mouse. I received the motherboard, processor and RAM second hand and have only just got around to building it, so I don't know if this problem has always existed, or if it's a result of my set up. If anyone has any hints or solutions it would be appreciated - this is kind of a show-stopper for me.

Files inside Alias folder not accessible

In my apache2.conf I have an alias setup like this: Alias /cake/ /var/www-cake/repo <Directory /var/www-cake/repo> Order allow,deny Allow from all AllowOverride All Options +Indexes </Directory> inside the /var/www-cake/repo directory I just have 1 file that is index.php when I go to http://linux-server/cake/ I get a directory listing that shoes the index.php file. When I click on the file it takes me to http://linux-server/cake/index.php in which I get a 404 page not found error. What do I need to do to make the files accessible?

Remote Desktop Connection can't connect to Windows Server 2012

Mission to Remote Desktop INTO Windows Server 2012 (standalone). Situation: Control Panel, System, Remote Settings, Remote Desktop – Allow All firewalls off Connect attempt using a known IP address (ping works ok) Connect Option as a user who has already logged on. Error message: Remote Access Cannot Connect 1) Remote access not enabled 2) Remote computer turned off 3) Remote computer not available Additional info: The Server 2012 can RDC OUT. The machines I use to connect IN are Windows 7 and Windows 8, they will RDC to other machines. I have fair experience of configuring remote desktop. Question: Is this a fault of beta software on the 2012 server, or is there a new way of getting RDC to work that I am missing?

Currently i'm working on a Purchased Order System Application Project for a small scale company. The Software that i am working on is personalized based on the on their business requirement. The company told me to create proposal include the price how much is the application is so they can process the check for me. The person who give me this project is the company supervisor and also a former supply chain supervisor in my employer before which i work also in some of their applications back then.So i want to be fair. This is my first time to create an application as a sideline so i really never experienced pricing a software even though i am working as full time web developer in a big company. Any tips and help ?

IE and Google Chrome timeout on an IIS6 hosted SSL page that Firefox handles well

Ok, here's the scenario: Up until a few weeks ago, none of us noticed anything wrong with the corporate website. People were using it without complaint. Then, a client complained that a specific page on the site was timing out for him, and only when he committed a POST action on a form filled with data. I checked it out, and it timed out for me, too. But, it only timed out in Google Chrome and IE, not in Firefox. Additionally, the same page, on the same server, but served from a different domain name (one not under the protection of SSL, either) does not time out under any browser. To clarify: https://www.mysite.com/changes.php times out on POST, but the same with http works fine. That distinction (SSL vs. Non-SSL) seems to be important, as nothing else has changed. Our certificate is valid, and Firefox detects no errors thrown by the page. I've looked at the Request and Response headers from the page, and they all follow the correct formats. Then, after wandering through the site, I noticed a few other things. Both IE and Chrome will frequently time out on any page that is PHP-based. They never time out on static images or html files. I've looked at the site from a variety of different servers, my home and work workstations, and my netbook. Because of that, I've discounted a viral infection, as I highly doubt a virus is going to hit every one of the machines to which I have access in exactly the same manner. My setup is: Server: Win2k3, II6, PHP 5.2.9-1. Clients: IE7, IE8, Chrome (regular and dev channel): Frequent timeouts on PHP pages. Firefox 2, Firefox 3: No timeouts. Firebug shows no errors or even lengthy periods serving the pages. I've spent 2 days searching for any tech knowledge that I can find, and my search parameters are all too general. Everyone has problems loading SSL pages in IE and Chrome for a wide variety of reasons. The infrequent nature of the timeouts and the fact that there are no errors being reported anywhere is starting to drive me insane. Does anyone have any insight on a problem like this?

Career guidance/advice for Junior-level Software Engineer [closed]

I have quite a few questions on my mind, so please bare with me. Please don't feel obligated to answer all of them, any as you choose will do. I'd appreciate if you could share some insight on any of these. Before I begin, some context: I currently have almost two years of professional experience as a Software Engineer, mainly developing software in Java. At this point, I feel that I have reached the peak in my career growth at the current company I am at and therefore I am looking for a new job, ideally again, as a Software Engineer. I have been interviewing for the past few months casually but have not had luck with companies I have a passion for. So, in no particular order - 1) In general, what are your thoughts on having graduate degrees in CS / Software Engineering. How much does it influence a salary increase, and do you think it's beneficial when working on real-world problems? I get the sense that a graduate degree in the field is trivial unless you really have a passion for research. 2) In general, in professional practice, how often had you have to write your own data structures and "complex" algorithms from scratch? In my own work, I have found myself relying mainly on third-party frameworks and the Java standard library to implement solutions as per business requirements. What are your thoughts on this? 3) In terms of resume, I feel the most ambivalent here. I want to be able to "blemish" my resume to a certain extent so that it stands out from others', but at the same time I do not want to over-exagerate my abilities. How do you strike a balance here? For example: I say that I am proficient in Java with data structures and algorithms. This is obviously a subjective and relative statement. I've taken the classes in my undergrad, and I've applied it in my work experience. What I feel as "prociency" can be seen as junior-level to others. How do you know what to say? Most of the time, recruiters (with no technical background) will be looking for keywords that stand out. This leads me to my next question (4). 4) Just from interviewing for the past few months (and getting plenty of rejections), I've come to realize that I may not be as proficient in data structures and algorithms as I thought I was. Do you think it's a good idea to remove the "proficient in java/data structure and algorithms"? I feel that being too hoenst on the resume will impede me from scoring opportunities to even have an interview with top-notch companies. What are your thoughts? 5) What is the absolute "must-have" knowledge going into a technical interview? I've been practicing several algorithmic and data sturcture problems now, and I feel that my abilities to solve arbitrary problems efficiently has not gotten significantly better. Do you think these abilities are something innate - it's either you have in you, or you don't? How can you teach yourself to learn, if you will? 6) How easy is it to go from industry/function to the next? I work mainly with backend technologies and I'm now interested in working with the frontend, i.e javascript,jquery,php or even mobile development. In your own experience, how did you not get pidgeon holed in your career? I feel that the choices you make now ultimately decide your future. As cliche as it sounds, I think it may be true. Here's what I mean: you've worked mainly as a backend engineer, people are interested in you doing the same thing since you've already accumulated experience in that function. How do get experience in a new function if people won't accept you because you don't already have it? It's a catch 22, you see... Are side projects the only real way to help you move from one function to another that you're truly interested in? For example: I could start writing my own mobile applications, even though I've worked mainly on the backend. Thanks so much for the long read. "OR" clause in Outlook 2007 Search Folders - Folder Composition

Is it possible to specify a Search Folder in Outlook 2007 that will use an OR rule ("any") instead of an AND rule ("and")? In particular, I have a search folder named A and another named B; I want a search folder named AB that will have all the messages that are in either A or B, or both. When I specify AB with the rules "In Folder is A exactly" and "In Folder is B exactly", I get an empty folder, possibly because at the moment no messages are in both. Is the workaround to rename "A" to "A workaround" and "B" to "B workaround" and then specify "AB" with the rule "In Folder contains workaround"? Urggh.

Hyper-V and custom resolution

I know this question has been asked many times (here and on TechNet), and the answer is usually "use RDP". But apparently, RDP is now the only option, and it's what I'm using. My screen is an LCD TV with a resolution of 1360x768. Unfortunately, this resolution is apparently not supported; the closest I can get in a Windows 8 VM is 1366x768, and it adds scrollbars, which make it difficult to put the mouse in the corners to get at the start screen and charm bar... Smaller resolutions don't fill the screen, so it's also difficult to put the mouse in the corner. Is there a way to set a custom resolution to fit my screen exactly ? (note: I know it's not a Windows 8 problem, since I don't have this problem on my host machine which also runs Windows 8. I assume it's related to the display adapter used by Hyper-V, but there don't seem to be any options to change it)

Where is the "pysdm" package?

I am new to Ubuntu. I have some old hardware lying around so I decided to build a backup/storage device. I am trying to follow this lifehacker article. It asks me to open a terminal and run sudo apt-get install pysdm. However, I keep getting Unable to locate package pysdm. Does anyone know where my pysdm is or where I can get one. I have run ubuntu from a usb key and have installed it on a hard drive and get the same message.

Resultant Vector Algorithm for 2D Collisions

I am making a Pong based game where a puck hits a paddle and bounces off. Both the puck and the paddles are Circles. I came up with an algorithm to calculate the resultant vector of the puck once it meets a paddle. The game seems to function correctly but I'm not entirely sure my algorithm is correct. WLS Console Timeout

The WebLogic console timeout is a great feature for security, yet a horrible feature during development. Logging in over and over again gets to be annoying. This is very easy to change, but I would never do this on a production system! Find the WebLogic consoleapp weblogic.xml file. This is typically in your WL_HOME/server/lib/consoleapp/webapp/WEB-INF/ directory. Edit the weblogic.xml file: Update the section shown and increase the timeout-secs. VirtualBox Clone Root HD / Ubuntu / Network issue

When you clone a root Ubuntu disk in VirtualBox, one thing that gets messed up is the network card definition. This is because Ubuntu (as it should) uses UDEV IDs for the network device. When you boot your new disk, the network device ID has changed, so it creates a new eth1 device. Unfortunately, this conflicts with the VirtualBox network setup. What to do? What's the best version control/QA workflow for a legacy system?

I am struggling to find a good balance with our development and testing process. We use Git right now, and I am convinced that ReinH's Git Workflow For Agile Teams is not just great for capital-A Agile, but for pretty much any team on DVCS. That's what I've tried to implement but it's just not catching. We have a large legacy system with a complex environment, hundreds of outstanding and undiscovered defects, and no real good way to set up a test environment with realistic data. It's also hard to release updates without disrupting users. Most of all, it's hard to do thorough QA with this process... and we need thorough testing with this legacy system. I feel like we can't really pull off anything as slick as the Git workflow outlined in the link. What's the way to do it?

Highlights From Interact '12 - Healthcare Industry User Group

Last week the Oracle team traveled to Orlando for the 18th annual Healthcare Industry User Group (HIUG) conference, Interact '12. HIUG has over 3,000 members representing 180 organizations. While we now know the result on the SCOTUS ruling yesterday, the consensus at the conference last week was summed up well in the welcome note from HIUG President, Chris Ryzewski: "Regardless of the legal ruling on this administration's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act we will undoubtedly be called upon to further reduce costs and be more efficient in every aspect of our business processes." Well put! Attendance exceeded previous years with several hundred attendees, over 100 sessions, and a trade show that numbered 40 booths. Most of the HIUG members use PeopleSoft applications and they tend to be full suite customers who use PeopleSoft broadly from HCM to Financials and Supply Chain. For many customers who have licensed PeopleSoft in the last year, it was their first experience with a very strong and collaborative user group. I had dinner with a provider who is rolling out PeopleSoft HCM and ERP to a nationwide system of forty hospitals. A key driver for this organization and others is how to leverage PeopleSoft applications to meet the cost reduction goals mentioned above. In the area of procurement, the topic of Supplier Contract Management attracted a lot of attention. Contract pricing and adherence to contracts throughout the procure to pay life cycle are key to meeting cost containment objectives. Customers were excited to see the new faceted search capabilities and usability of the upcoming PeopleSoft eProcurement release. The new Work Center concept was discussed in several areas including the Cost Reconciliation Work Center and the Supply Demand Work Center which enables healthcare specific functions around PAR counts and related replenishment activities. The latest Feature Pack of HCM 9.1 was demonstrated with the Talent Summary and Manager Dashboard. Customers were excited to see the major advances in self service available today. The Grants Special Interest Group focused quite a bit on the usage of PeopleSoft's Project Costing "Funds Distribution" feature, which can be used to manage capital projects funded by multiple agencies and sources. Along with the latest release of the Mobile Inventory solution that several hospitals have now implemented, a preview of new mobile applications for expenses and approvals drew a lot of attention. The PeopleSoft focus on assisting these companies in their goals to contain costs and create new efficiencies continues forward. We look foward to Interact '13!

The situation: Windows 7 ultimate on standard box 4 GB RAM. The problem: IE 8 kept on crashing. Tried upgrading to IE 9 - no better. Then I thought I will have to kick IE into touch and go with Firefox. Same problem Firefox crashes. Gave Chrome a chance - same problem the browser just says sorry, and closes / restarts. Other problems, this is not the best machine I have ever had, Word sometime closes unexpectedly, and I have trouble with Microsoft Updates failing first time.

cant get ubuntu to work with windows 8

ive been trying to dual boot Ubuntu with windows 8 but so far I haven't been able too. the laptop im using is a HP Pavilion g6-2240sa pre-installed with windows 8. ive made the bootbale USB with Ubuntu 12.10, it installs but when I restart the computer boot straight into windows, no grub boot options. I can get into Ubuntu once by doing an advanced restart and booting from the Ubuntu partition. I can use Ubuntu fine but once I restart or shutdown, I do the advanced restart again and the Ubuntu partition is now gone and I have to reinstall. i used this tutorial to install Ubuntu, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNCSbTyUzoM After i have to reinstall and still no grub boot menu, i used the boot repair to re-install it. once i rebooted the computer it went straight to windows again and the Ubuntu partition was gone. can i dual boot windows 8 and unbuntu 12.10 with the grub so i can pick what OS to boot into when the computer is starting, and without the partition going AWOL????
