  • Parallel Threading in Multi-Language Software?

    I'm developing a software that contain many modules/Daemon running in parallel manner, what i'm looking for is how to implement that, i cannot use Thread because some of those modules/Daemon are perhaps implemented in other languages (C,java,C#...). For example I'm using C for Hooking Messages exchanged between Windows kernel and top level applications, Java/C# to use some free library to simply parse XML(for example) or to accept and execute commands over the network..this can be done by C Language but just to improve productivity... Finally for GUI I'm using Ultimate++ (c++) that is like the main process that call and monitor(activate/deactivate/get state) of all other modules/Daemon through an interface. I admit that the development of each module/Daemon in a separate language greatly facilitates maintenance, but especially I am obliged to do that.. What is the best practice way to do that ? All helps will be appreciated.

What's the "hacking part" in programming, and what makes a language "hackerish"? What are some good examples of languages and features in languages that you would call "hackerish"? (Someone might say that I shouldn't be confused by the word "hackerish", that's it's not really a "proper" English word or something like that, but that's besides the point)

The foreign language characters are not getting displayed properly after loading. How can this problem be solved ? I could solve it by using code page UTF - 16 Encoding of Unicode Platform Endian, earlier i was using different code page UTF-8.

  • Learning OpenGL ES 1.x

    What is the quickest way to come up to speed on OpenGL ES 1.x? Let's assume I know nothing about OpenGL (which is not entirely true, but it's been a while since I last used OpenGL). I am most interested in learning this for iPhone-related development, but I'm interested in learning how it works on other platforms as well. I've found the book OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide, but I am concerned that it might not be the best approach because it focuses on 2.0 rather than 1.x. My understanding is that 2.0 is not backwards-compatible with 1.x, so I may miss out on some important concepts.     I've often heard of applications written using the language of the gods, assembly language. I've never tried though, and I don't even have a clue how to do it. If I wanted to dabble, how would I go about doing it? I know absolutely nothing about what is required, although presumably some kind of compiler and Notepad. Just purely out of curiousity, what would I need to write a "Hello World!" application?

  • PHP text parsing and / or make your own language?

    Been Googling around without finding much at all, so does anyone know of a class or library that helps you parse any sort of language, like a Domain Specific Language (I'm creating one, so I'm flexible in what the syntax and format can be) into either PHP code or some helpful struct or a class hiearchy or ... ? Anything goes at this point. :) I want to experiment with parsing text files into tokens, building up a small grammar and syntax library to express things like Business Natural Languages.

    A portion of my job is to maintain technical documentation for a rapidly expanding manufacturing company. Because it is only a portion of my job and the company's product line is expanding so quickly, I can't stay on top of the documentation. As a result, I've been yearning for an information management system with a handful of specific features. I've found many products that have a subset, but none that have all the features I'm looking for. I'm at the point of picking an existing product and expanding it to cover my desired feature set, however, this will be a pet project and I will be learning the underlying language as I go. So, the main question is which existing product will be the easiest to expand to cover the full feature set and has a relatively easy to learn language? Alternatively, have I missed another existing program that will cover the feature set or should be in my list of "close, but not quite there"?   • What should I "forget" when going to Javascript?

    I went from C=64 Basic and assembler to FORTRAN and C to C++ and Java. Professionally I started in Visual Basic for applications then to Visual Basic 4, 5, 6. After that VB.NET AND C# with some Java here and there. I have played with Ruby and Python and found both fun. During each step I never felt like I had to forget what I had learned before. I always felt like I was just learning better and/or slightly different ways of doing things but the difference was not major. The difference was like the difference between American, Australian and British English. (Maybe assembler was Latin and FORTRAN was Spanish.) But now I am using JavaScript to do real, actual work. (Before used it as a "Scripting" language pure a simple.) And I just feel like I have to forget some things to become proficient in it. It feels like some old Egyptian language. What should I forget? Is it just that code organization is different (no real classes so no one class one file)? Or is it something more basic?

The blog post reports Kathy Sierra list, the first item 'Find the best aggregators' has captured my attention. I'm used to look at DZone, IMHO a good aggregator. DZone has voting and tagging.   • Structuring multi-threaded programs

    Are there any canonical sources for learning how to structure multi-threaded programs? Even with all the concurrency utility classes that Java provides I'm having a hard time properly structuring multi-threaded programs. Whenever threads are involved my code becomes very brittle, any little change can potentially break the program because the code that jumps back and forth between the threads tends to be very convoluted.

A few ASP.NET books I looked at either start with absolute basics...What is C#? What is a function...or Assume that I have developed web apps in other languages like PHP...I am looking for a book that is tailored for people who already know desktop programming but wish to learn ASP.NET.
