• Two wireless NICs on a MacBook - can I bind all VPN traffic to one, and everything else to another?

  I frequently connect to my workplace over a VPN. I would like to continue watching videos from, say YouTube, whilst I work on the VPN, without degrading the available VPN bandwidth (say for an RDP session). Can I configure a second NIC to deal with only the VPN traffic, with everything else going over the primary? Specs as requested: Macbook Pro, OSX Snow Leopard, using the built in OSX VPN connectivity, the in-built airport card and a USB external wifi adapter.

• Different DPI on MacBook Pro and external monitors - what options are there?

  I have an external monitor connected to my MacBook Pro, the two screens have different DPIs. Ideally I would like them to be the same, but as this is not the case, the best option I can see is reducing the resolution of the MBP screen to bring its DPI as close as possible to the external monitor. This introduces scaling artefacts on the screen, as LCDs don't look good at non-native resolutions. Is there a standard or best way of handling this, and if not, what other options are available?

• Login to OS X Server User Account from Local Computer

  I have OS X Server installed on a mac mini. I've created several User accounts, one of which is Account Name: Bob Password: abc123 From the Mac Mini's login screen I can choose "Server" (main account) "Bob" (Bobs account) and "Other..." OS X Server Accounts, from "Other..." if I input Bobs credentials it will log me in. I also have a macbook air, I would like to be able to select from the Login Screen "Other..." input Bobs credentials and have it login to Bobs account, or any other User Account for that matter. My Server is setup as private with the server address: server.network.private Following some googled instructions as well as apples very own instructions I have: Setup an Open Directory with Username: diradmin Password: abc123 Then on the macbook air gone into System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options and clicked Join next to Network Account Server, input my server (server.network.private) with diradmin credentials and its connected. Great. I've also ticked Allow Network Users to Login and Login Window and selected All Users. I was assuming this would allow my macbook air to login to the "Bob" account by selecting "Other..." from the login window although there is no "Other..." option. I then setup a VPN, basic credentials, logged into it on the macbook air and still not much has changed. I am able to share screens with the "Bob" account form my macbook air by logging in by clicking Share Screen... from the Finder under Shared > Network Server and then clicking Login In but this obviously requires the macbook air to already be logged into an account before it can share screens which is not suitable. Is there any way to simply login to the OS X Server User Account from the macbook air's login screen via the "Other..." like it does on the mac mini's login screen? Thanks in advance.   I recently installed OpenSwan on my Fedora 13 machine. I want to use it to connect with Mac OS X with L2TP over IPSEC, unfortunately I am already stuck on the IPSEC-negotation part. My server is running behind a NATted firewall so my external IP differs from the server's IP. The server has a fixed IP on the network and the same is almost always valid for the clients (they are usually behind a NATted firewall). I installed OpenSwan on Fedora 13 and have following configuration: config setup protostack=netkey nat_traversal=yes virtual_private=%v4:10.0.0.0/8,%v4:192.168.0.0/16,%v4:172.16.0.0/12 oe=off nhelpers=0 conn L2TP-PSK-NAT rightsubnet=vhost:%priv also=L2TP-PSK-noNAT conn L2TP-PSK-noNAT authby=secret pfs=no auto=add keyingtries=3 rekey=no ikelifetime=8h keylife=1h type=transport left=my.servers.external.ip leftprotoport=17/1701 right=%any rightprotoport=17/0 IPSEC starts fine and listens to UDP 500 and 4500. These two ports are opened in the firewall and are forwarded fine to the server. In my /etc/ipsec.secrets file I have my.servers.external.ip %any: "LongAndDifficultPassword" And finally in my sysctl.conf (the redirect-entries are there because OpenSwan was strongly protesting about send/accept_redirects being active) I have net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 net.ipv4.conf.all.send_redirects = 0 net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects = 0 Running "ipsec verify" gives me "all greens" (except Opportunistic Encryption Support, which is DISABLED), however, when trying to connect my Mac gives me following in the logs: Nov 1 19:30:28 macbook pppd[4904]: pppd 2.4.2 (Apple version 412.3) started by user, uid 1011 Nov 1 19:30:28 macbook pppd[4904]: L2TP connecting to server 'my.servers.ip.address' (my.servers.ip.address)... What do we really learn in term of programming from using this kind of tool (I'm ok with python and js, but I hate C#) ? • Is it possible to use mac trackpad gestures on a linux virtualbox? (macbook pro)

  Specifically, I would just love to use the trackpad to do "three finger swipes" and switch between workspaces, that would just be slick as hell. I imagine this might require a plugin or some such thing, in addition to the disabling of the underlying mac os's responding to the gestures, which is what it currently does. This might be impossible. PS/FYI: I am running ubuntu, but I imagine this might apply to debian builds as well.

• Unable to start GRUB2 on Triple boot Macbook Pro with OS X Lion, Windows 7 and Ubuntu

  I installed Windows 7 using Bootcamp. Then I created a partition from the empty space in the Windows partition and another 4GB partition for the linux swap using GParted. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS in the the newly created partition from the Windows partition. Now GRUB2 does not load and I can only see the blinking cursor on the top right when selecting "Windows HD" from the 'option' key at the start up. OS X works fine but nothing else. • How can I configure the embedded wireless card in a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 to work under Lubuntu 10.10?

  I'm struggling to get the embedded wireless card in this laptop to work. In 7.10 (gutsy) it worked fine. Now I'm trying to get 10.10 (maverick) working on it, and am using the Lubuntu flavour due to the low resources of this laptop. The hardware: Appears to be an embedded pcmcia card. pccardctl ident gives: Socket 0: product info: "TOSHIBA", "Wireless LAN Card", "Version 01.01", "" manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002 function: 6 (network) The default kernel recognises the card and loads the orinoco_cs driver. orinoco_cs 0.0: Hardware identity 0005:0002:0001:0002 orinoco_cs 0.0: Station identity 001f:0001:0006:000e orinoco_cs 0.0: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 6.14 Then for some reason, the driver isn't happy with this and gives: orinoco_cs 0.0: Hardware identity 0005:0002:0001:0002 orinoco_cs 0.0: Station identity 001f:0002:0009:0030 orinoco_cs 0.0: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 9.48 All seems ok until I try to associate with my access point using Network Manager. eth1: Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming repeated about 10 times then NM gives up. According to the linuxwireless.org wiki page on this driver, this is a known issue, and I quote: Known issues Roaming and WPA_supplicant Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming On the Agere cards, roaming is controlled by the firmware instead of userspace. You will get the above message if userspace attempts to associate with a specific AP rather than by SSID. If you are using wpa_supplicant use ap_scan=2 mode. NetworkManager uses wpa_supplicant, so the above also applies. At this point my google-fu has failed me, and I can't find how to configure network manager to use the mystical "ap_scan=2" mode via wpa_supplicant. I have tried the following suggested solutions (from launchpad or the forums) deleting the agere* files from /lib/firmware using wicd instead of network manager combining both blacklisting the orinoco_cs driver in an attempt to force use of the hostap_cs driver instead (in case it is a prism2 card). Obviously none of them have worked for me. Any hints on how to perform the suggested workaround above? Edit: I have also confirmed working on 8.10 (intrepid) live CD.

  Unlike with earlier releases, the website is unclear on giving a straight recommendation for installing ubuntu on a mac: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ I've read several times, that I should use an alternative image. But this is only offered as 64-bit. However, I'm also told to rather use 32-bit images for better software compability. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64+mac.iso Even though I should only use alternative images, there is offered a standard desktop image which is "adjusted to work properly on Mac systems". http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64+mac.iso Question Which image should I take? Do both of these images offer UEFI boot? I've tried both of them already, but both have setup an install with BIOS emulation.   I love PHP and C# languages and i want to be excellent in both. I like to develop PHP applications using MySQL, Nginx, Memcached and so on technologies. I also like ASP.NET MVC stack and think it's great tools. But each technology requires a lot of time to master it. The same is true for C# web stack - there is a huge amount of things to be mastered like Azure, LINQ, Entity Framework ets. Mastering PHP means knowing how it works under the hood. Mastering C# means knowing CLR implementations on a deep level, knowing MSIL etc/ Where to get time for all this? Maybe this is "jack of all trades"? What can you advice?

• Should programmers do Pro Bono work? where are the code public defenders?

  How many projects are people doing based on the Bro Bono publico ideals versus working for the highest wage or potential for a cash-in-buy-out payday? For years lawyers have been called out for excessive gathering of wealth from high bill rates and huge settlement deals, hiring out their knowledge and skills to the highest bidders. People call for them to do more for free, use the laws and their time to defend or further some cause thats in the public's best interest. Is professional software development that different? So many bright people and so much knowledge of complex systems. Do you think that there is enough of a "Pro Bono" movement to solve the social and public problems in the industry right now? If so what are the examples to point to? OLPC? NOTE: Saying that open source software is the same as pro bono misses the point completely. I was looking for specific projects with a social context, not just group-sourcing for free software. Just because your not making anyone pay for your software does not mean its doing anyone any good. I'm not calling out manual enforcement of pro bono work for programmers, really just want some objective opinions and concrete examples of social-minded software/tech development projects like the One Laptop Per Child project. I'm sure open source would be a natural tie-in for some.
