  • Which iso image do I need to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a Macbook Pro so that it boots using UEFI?

    Unlike with earlier releases, the website is unclear on giving a straight recommendation for installing ubuntu on a mac: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ I've read several times, that I should use an alternative image. But this is only offered as 64-bit. However, I'm also told to rather use 32-bit images for better software compability. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-alternate-amd64+mac.iso Even though I should only use alternative images, there is offered a standard desktop image which is "adjusted to work properly on Mac systems". http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/12.04/release/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64+mac.iso Question Which image should I take? Do both of these images offer UEFI boot? I've tried both of them already, but both have setup an install with BIOS emulation. This is quite annoying because of the short battery life and high temperatures which are harmful to battery longevity.

And just a month ago I left the job, and now i got an offer to develop an iPhone/iPad app. I need to develop an universal app which has frames like PicFrame in which photos must adjust accordingly, with customizable frames, few photo effects like in instagram (Not exactly same but something like it) and then user can share photos on Facebook, tumbler,dropbox, etc. I might need around 30 days time to develop the desired app. Note that designing is not my part, I need to develop and test it thoroughly.   • 100% APC Fragmentation - Cacherouter & Pressflow install

    My APC cache has a 100% fragmentation. I'm not quite sure I understand what is going on here. For testing I jacked the available memory up to 512. After a day the total available free memory shows 73% but I still have 100% fragmentation. Would you gurus please look at my settings and offer your advice? Oh, I have read people suggest that I disable apc.stat when possible but when I do the site crashes. I am using the Pressflow build of Drupal 6 with the cacherouter module installed.   • Programming languages with extensible syntax

    I have only a limited knowledge of Lisp (trying to learn a bit in my free time) but as far as I understand Lisp macros allow to introduce new language constructs and syntax by describing them in Lisp itself. This means that a new construct can be added as a library, without changing the Lisp compiler / interpreter. This approach is very different from that of other programming languages. E.g., if I wanted to extend Pascal with a new kind of loop or some particular idiom I would have to extend the syntax and semantics of the language and then implement that new feature in the compiler. Are there other programming languages outside the Lisp family (i.e. apart from Common Lisp, Scheme, Clojure (?), Racket (?), etc) that offer a similar possibility to extend the language within the language itself?

  • Is regularly hiring and making permanent staff redundant normal? [on hold]

    Is a cycle of hiring permanent staff and then making them redundant after 1-2 years due to 're-alignment of business goals' / 'changes in priorities' normal in the technology industry? This behaviour hardly seems justifiable, and here in the UK it is questionable whether it is even legal. I begin to wonder whether some of this behaviour I have seen in this economy is due to the companies involved not wanting to pay premium rates for contractors (who I must admit in my opinion often offer no more value), and using 'redundancy' e.g. "sorry joe, you're not needed any more", as a convenient way of recreating the contracting scenario. It seems in this situation if you're a valued developer your job probably is never at risk, but I can understand it being a worry for people and I don't think it is fair on those who are mislead into thinking that they have a longer term career with the companies which do this.

  • Unity Gone, have tried everything 12.04

    Hello I have checked a few forums and tried much of the advice given, however nothing has worked so far. I dont know how it happened but when I boot up, I get the login screen to select user and once I select my user and input pw my screen displays my background inage but never loads cairo dock or the unity sidebar. I have tried unity --reset from tty1 and get asked if im actually trying to do a reset from a tty. I have also tried ctrl+ alt + T after logging in to get a terminal and tried to open ccsm to restart unity from there and that has not worked either. Any ideas?.....Thank You in advance for any help you can offer. Darrin

I enjoy solving problems, programming, and using computers to find said solutions, but I feel that I never really concentrated on anything in particular and so I don't have any specialties or a path in technology to follow.   • 12.04 + Alienware M11x R2 + Bumblebee 3.0 = low resolution only

    I had a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on my Alienware M11x, and it worked with the native monitor resolution of 1366x768. In trying to get the Optimus chipset working, I installed Bumblebee 3.0. Now, I am only offered 640x480 for my monitor resolution. Graphically, Unity 3D appears to be working now, instead of the Unity 2D I had before, so something went right, but I don't know how I can get it to offer me any higher resolutions than 640x480. I've looked up many pages that address this topic, but nothing that I've seen suggested has worked. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia was the latest thing I tried. I've tried some variants of this, I've been sure to uninstall nvidia drivers prior to reinstalling Bumblebee and various video drivers. Does anyone have any clue as to how I can get back to native resolution?

    As a Laptop user, I'm sure that a lot of people, even the ones using Netbooks would have already gone through this problem. Especially when listening to podcasts, and using it as an example, the sound might have loud moments and quiet moments, one person speaking loud and the other speaking very quiet in the same episode. Thereby, I always wanted the sound to be compressed system-wide, and I just noted the other day, that in Windows, some Realtek drivers already offer this function. We have already a pulseaudio plugin for equalization system-wide, and although it still has problems like not letting us change its values and listen the change in real time, or cracking the sound while changing pulse volume, I do love it and use it. Now I'm just missing something to keep the sound around 0db (or near the volume level you're using) as a leveler plugin for pulseaudio. Any suggestion?

Actually it is a "Site not configured page" with some technical text and links to the hosting site. I could: submit its URL to search engines right now remove the page and submit the URL when the site will be online (could be a couple of months) replace the default page with "coming soon" contents and submit the URL opt for simplicity and add a blank html page having a focused and well descriptive title and maybe some meta tag other? I prefer 4 over 3 because at the moment there aren't precise project details to provide. What's the proper way to notify search engines that soon this site will be online, without getting penalized for side effects I'm not considering or aware of?
