  • VERY large text files and Snow Leopard

    Sometimes I need to work on EXTREMELY large text files. 200-300 megs or more. My favorite text editor on my MacBook Pro is TextMate. However, TM chokes on very large text files. Even ones around the 100MB mark. Is there a text editor that can handle such files for Snow Leopard? Thanks!

    I have a problem with playing online mp3s. I'm using latest version of javazoom's jlayer and basicplayer. Certain files cannot be player through the Internet. I have a set of mp3s, playing one after the other. Randomly one mp3 doesn't work throwing above exception. Some mp3s can be played by calling again play() method if javazoom's basicplayer, but others can never be played online. I was able to find this post but I doubt if this really relates to my directx version or something. Mohsen

    I often use the MSDN website for language reference. In order to make navigation faster, I downloaded the offline version of SQL Server 2005 Books Online from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=be6a2c5d-00df-4220-b133-29c1e0b6585f&displaylang=en The reason why it is 137MB is that it comes with its own GUI, which, not surprisingly, is rather poor! Apparently though, the pages are written in html. The URIs look like: ms-help://MS.SQLCC.v9/sqlcc9/html/674933a8-e423-4d44-a39b-2a997e2c2333.htm . I can open the URI in IE, but with errors. Do you know if I can open them with Firefox and how? Or is there a simple HTML version of "MS Books Online", for example in a ZIP file?

  • Mountable online storage (no syncing)

    I have a Linux VPS that I would like to turn into a media server. Like most cheap VPS's, it has a fairly small storage capacity. What I would like to do is attach the box to an online backup system such as SpiderOak or DropBox, where the files would reside and be directly accessible to either a webserver or media server software. Since the VPS hdd is small, I do not want the files to be synced to it. I would like a storage system that is online only. Ideally mountable like a network drive. Are there any services that suit my needs, or workarounds for services such as SpiderOak that do not require syncing?

    I had a general question about streaming videos online; in particular, on YouTube. What really is required to smoothly stream videos at 360p or 480p? Then for that HD goodness, what really allows a computer to smoothly stream 720p and 1080p? I'm not too sure whether it's to do with the CPU (speed, # cores, cache size), GPU (chipset, VRAM, memory type) or even HDD (IDE vs SATA). What contributes to the ability to stream regular videos and, furthermore, high-definition videos online?

  • How To Find Reasons of Why Site Goes Online/Offline

    Seems today a website I manage has been going online and offline throughout the entire day. I have no idea what is causing the issue so I am seeking guidance on where to start. It is a Wordpress based site. So here is what I DO know: I use a program that pings the server every minute and when the server is not responding me it emails me, so I can know exactly when the site is online and offline. The site between 8pm to 12pm 12.28, and around the 1a hour early morning 12.29 (New York City timezone, and all times below are in same timezone). At the time of the ups/downs I see a lot of strain on the memory usage. Look at the load average when the site is going online/offline (http://screencast.com/t/BRlfXkqrbJII). Then I ran this command to restart http (http://screencast.com/t/usVtYWZ2Qi) and the memory usage then goes down to this (http://screencast.com/t/VdTIy3bgZiQB). An hour after I restarted http, the site then went offline/online so restarting the http didn't do much help. When the site is going offline/online, I ran the top command and get this (http://screencast.com/t/zEwr7YQj3). Here is a top command when the site is at it's lowest (http://screencast.com/t/eaMfha9lbT - so this would be dubbged "normal"). Here is a bandwidth report (http://screencast.com/t/AS0h2CH1Gypq). The traffic doesn't seem to be that much (http://screencast.com/t/s7hrWNNic1K), but looking at my times the site is going up/down this may be one of the reasons? I have the dvp Nitro package at Media Temple (http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/nitro/). So at this point I would request some help in trying to figure out what the cause of this is, and how I can go about pinpointing this issue. ANY HELP is greatly appreciated.

It did enabled in Extension Manager Tools/Options page. Internet connection was fine. Can't know why. On another computer: Windows 7, VS2010 utilmate trail version: this was fine.

At first im content relying on paypal links, but I really want to be learning about specific security threats and how to combat them. Eventually I want to feel comfortable receiving and sending customer credit card details for ecommerce. Obviously this is a common thing on the net but most tutorials and resources are content to say "it's every web developers responsibility to consider security, but we're not going to cover that here/today/ever." so, my question is, where is a good place to learn? And once I've learned, how do I stay abreast of new vulnerabilities as the web evolves?

When the user is not online, I want them to still be able to see the numbers they already got from the database in the table view.     how can i get know when user online and offline. when one user log in to my site. i set a script to change database table field of that user, as a boolean to indicates users online states. but my problem is if he/she leaved my site without clicking the log-out button, then my script does not work and database show he/she as a online user. please give me any sugestion to fix this. i have no idea what to do! i check some answers on this topic, but most of says asnwer lie this -- if last activity time is less than now+15 minutes then user is online, offline otherwise. but i have seen some social networking sites shows that we have gone offline, just we close the browser. how they do that ?

    Hello, Let's imagine really simple game... We have a labirinth and two players trying to find out exit in real time through internet. On every move game client should send player's coordinates to server and accept current coordinates of another client. How is it possible to make this exchange so fast (as all modern games do). Ok, we can use memcache or similar technology to reduce data mining operations on server side. We can also use fastest webserver etc., but we still will have problems with timings. So, the questions are... What protocol game clients are usually using for exchanging information with server? What server technologies are coming to solve this problem?     Hi, Google is asking me to fax credit card xerox in order to activate adwords API in MCC. This really sucks imo... they could have had prepaid option. In any case, my questions: 1) Are there alternatives to this - is there a 3rd party provider who will give me this service without me sending them the credit card info? 2) How secure is it to send my credit card fax via some online fax service? 3) Do you think they will reject the application if I hide my CVV number in the fax?     Rectangular or column editing is possible in emacs. And it is very easy with cua-mode enabled.   • What word processor can manage left and right pages separately?

    I was after a word processor that can manage left and right pages separately so I can have my text on the right pages and my illustrations on the left pages. I know LibeOffice can set "left page" and "right page" formats, but there is no simple way to make the text jump from right page to right page when writing. I don't know what would be the best way to do that, but I guess I need an app that is designed for writing books and do that kind of thing, or an app that can associate a page format with an object format (so the "illustration" format can be exclusively associated with "left page" format, and "text body" exclusively associated with "right page", for example). Or is there an extension for LO or OOo out there that I didn't hear about? Cheers!
