• PSU requirement question for my PC setup.

  I understand that sometimes there may be a situation where the PSU is way more than required but in this case of mine, I'm not too sure. Sometimes when I play games, my computer will crash and restarts itself, 10 mins into the game. Once I received a message that says something like the power is overheating or something like that. Ok, so I have a 500W PSU. I have: 1x Internal DVD writer 1x SATA 250GB HD 1x Nvidia 8500 GT 2GB RAM. As I'm planning to get an additional 250GB SATA HD, I wonder if I need to increase my PSU as well -- in full knowledge of the previous crashes experienced before. Should I upgrade my PSU to 650W perhaps, or is that excessive?

• Windows 7 PC cannot see some LAN PCs, but can access them via path

  In an office LAN, with Windows 7 Professional workstations and a FreeNAS Samba server, 2 workstations have intermittent problems in browsing for the other workstations, as well as the FreeNAS server. However, so far, it appears that typing in the path to any of the workstations which aren't visible via the "browse" function, works. ie. the machine Workstation7 is not visible while browsing via Windows Explorer, but is accessible if I type \\Workstation7 in the path field. Occasionally the workstations exhibiting these symptoms show errors that their connection to the FreeNAS server has failed and only rebooting resolves the issue. All other workstations on the network use identical Windows 7 Professional installations and never have these problems. I've checked all machines and they're not using Home Groups. All are setup on the same WorkGroup as the FreeNAS server and the network type is set to Work Network. Temporarily disabling the firewall on the workstations with the issue made no difference, so I know this has nothing to do with the firewall settings. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.

• Windows 7 Media Center PC not displaying MKV files properly

  Does anyone know why Windows Media Center wouldn't correctly display a 16x9 video? I just upgraded my home-built HTPC from Vista Ultimate (hey, it was a giveaway) to Windows 7 Ultimate - clean install. After that, I installed the Divx7 beta (to get .MKV support) and AC3filter (so I could HEAR the MKV files). Previously, under Vista Ultimate (32 bit), I had Arcsoft's Total Theater Pro for playing Blu-Rays and MKV decoding under Media Center. Now when I play a 720p 16x9 MKV file, I get some 'letterboxing' - like it's halfway between 4x3 and 16x9 - with the aspect ration looking alightly squished as a result. Here's the wierd part. If I use the Media Center connection software in my XBox 360 - it plays perfectly, filling the 16x9 screen edge-to-edge, just like Vista's WMC software USED to. Of course, beats the network up because the XBox goes to the HTPC, the HTPC goes to my WHS machine to fetch the data, it comes back to the HTPC, gets transcoded and streamed back to the Xbox. I'm running the latest drivers for an NVidia card (as fetched by Windows 7). I have no idea WHY this is because if I play "ordinary" (i.s. SD) Divx files that are 16x9, they play just fine, scaled right up to my screen's edges. It puzzles me as to why the same machine that properly converts the bits for the Xbox can't display/scale them properly for the attached display. Mind you, Windows Media Player exhibits the same symptoms. Ideas?

  Hi, I have created a VM for Virtual PC in windows 7. I am writing a batch file to backup data in the VM to a host USB drive. I have shared the host drives. I have a USB drive that I want to backup to. But how do refer to the USB drive in the batch file. I cannot seem to map a drive to it, It is called "H on Malcolm-Desktop" in windows explorer. This is what I have tried. XCOPY C:\Inetpub\wwwroot "\\H on Malcolm-Desktop\HALII_VHD_Backup\DataBackup\Inetpub\wwwroot" /S /E /Y /D How do I write this command? Malcolm

• MAC and PC problems on home network

  Hello! At home we have a wireless router that my family want to use. We have our main computer physically connected to the router, and my laptop is connected wirelessly. When the network is like this then it is faultless. However, when my brother introduces is Apple MAC into the equation, both my laptop and the family machine gets all sorts of problems, primarily long load times and timeouts. The MAC, however, works fine. I think I've read something here or SF about a MAC continusly pinging a router which times it out, but I've not found any solution so far. • How do you remove old Windows Vista Backups?

  I've been backing up my Vista box using Complete PC backup for quite a while now, and I was just wondering how it is that you remove old backups when your backup drive is to full for another backup. I recently received the following error: The backup did not complete successfully. An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the error: There is not enough space to save the backup files. Free up disk space or change your backup settings. (0x81000005) I don't see anything in the settings for the backup to change this. Do I have to mount the backup to delete an old backup? If so where is that file located? • Ctrl-Alt-Delete doesn't unlock PC when VMPlayer is on

  My desktop XP OS gets locked after I leave for x minutes. I have VMPlayer occupying full screen mode. I think the keyboard is redirected to VMWare. I press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and outer-machine XP is not unlocking. I think maybe keyboard is going to VMWare, because this seems to only happen when I have VMWare running. How do I unlock XP? Is there some magic key sequence?

• Limit Windows PC Network/Internet Throughput

  I have a Vista x64 machine on a fairly fast Internet connection and either buggy drivers for the onboard Ethernet or faulty onboard Ethernet hardware. If I sustain too high a throughput on the Ethernet connection the network connection within Windows fails and I have to restart the machine to restore connectivity. I don't believe I can fix this issue (I'm erring towards faulty hardware) but would like to mitigate the effects by limiting my network throughput. I'm in a position where I would like to download a 5GB file from the Internet (a game install via Steam) and am certain that as this will take a few hours I will not be able to complete the download before my network connection within Windows fails. From downloading content through a BitTorrent client I have found that by limiting the download throughput to around 150 kilobytes per second I can maintain a steady network connection. I can't directly limit the throughput of the download through the Steam client and would instead like to find out how I can limit the throughput of my Ethernet connection within Windows. Any suggestions on how I can achieve this?

• Should I get a desktop PC if I will move abroad

  Hello, This is probably a bit of a personal opinion style question - should I buy a desktop or a laptop? Generally I would prefer a desktop, since it's generally cheaper for the same specs, but it's about 50% likely that I will have to move to Japan (from UK) for a couple of years in two years or so. I have never heard of anyone travelling with a desktop - is it even possible without getting it destroyed? If anyone have experience in this area, could you suggest me if It's better to choose a laptop just for this reason? I don't really care about mobility on daily basis that much as I already have a netbook. Thanks for all the help and sorry if it's a bit off topic.

• Out of sync audio / video on Hackintohs

  I have a PC with OSx86 on it. (10.6.2) Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are there any other players for OS X that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

• Formatted mac external hard drive loaded on pc

  I have an issue where it appears that an external hard drive which had been formatted on a mac system was loaded as a drive in Windows. Windows is obviously unable to read the data and now the drive won't mount in the mac. It appears that Windows overwrote something concerning the drive's information on what filesystems and types it has on it. Mac diskutility is unable to repair the drive and the partition is showing up in the utility as a FAT32. Using an applexsoft utility, I am able to verify the data is still on this drive, but I'd rather not spend $100 to save these files (its not my hard drive anyways). Is there a way I can use some UNIX commands to find out the partition information on the drive, back the raw data up on it, then restore the data back onto the drive after re-formatting it again?

  I am looking to retire my HTPC. So much of what we do with it can be done with one of our video game consoles or an AppleTV that is seems like a waste of space, power and time to maintain. The trouble is that my wife does streaming yoga classes served up via specific websites. I am assuming they are Flash based and so far I have been unable to find Apps for these content providers. My question is, is there a GOOD way to handle flash-based or even HTML5/h.264 web content with one of the other Internet enabled devices in our stack?   Hi, I have a laptop and an external display. I am able to use the external display either as extended desktop OR duplicate desktop. I also use a separate keyboard and mouse. So effectively, the laptop acts just as a box without display. I want to know is it possible to use the laptop as 2 virtual PCs. (with separate control). I.E., one person uses the laptop as a laptop, and other person can simultaneously connect a keyboard and mouse and the external display and effectively get a second PC.   We have several remote, unmanned terminals where I require a VNC server, as using Remote Desktop prevents others using the terminals. Often the connection to one of these is extremely slow, and manually using Remote Desktop to perform the VNC installation is painstaking. I often see those hosts that say "We can have your server ready in 5 seconds". And I wonder how do they manage this? I would also like to deploy a full functional clean server in 5 seconds. So how is this done? Is it by first installing a clean server, then take a snapshot of that for later to deploy a new server based on that snapshot? • How to increase virtual hard drive space

  I have a Microsoft Virutal PC hard drive (.vhd format) that's maxed out it's 16 gig hard drive space. What would be the best way to increase this diskspace? Booting into the machine (windows xp professional) and using the disk management snap in, I can see that the virtual drive has approximately 40 more unused gigs of space. Trying to use diskpart, I find out that Windows XP can't extend the boot partition. So I'm at an empass, any suggestions on how to increase the partion or to increase the actual virtual hard drive would be great. Note: The virtual hard drive is running on Windows 7 using XP mode.

  Hi, I have a automation build server which creates nightly builds. It does this while logged off in Windows XP. This is is one domain while the server I wish to copy the builds to is in another domain (win2k3). I can't use a network share when logged off and as soon as I try to browse manually to the server it prompts for a username/password I am guessing the only way is to create a script/batch file which has a domain account and password for the server and runs at a scheduled time. • Transferring dmg files from a PC to an Apple
