• Queuing using table or MSMQ?

  A part of the application I'm working on is an swf that shows a test with some 80 questions. Each question is saved to a sql server through WebORB and asp.net. If a candidate finisheds the test, the session needs to be validated. Problem now is that sometimes 350 candidates finish their test at the same moment, and cpu on webserver and sql server explodes (350 validations concurrently). Now, how would I implement queuing here? In the database, there's a table that has a record for each session. One column holds the status. 1 is finished, 2 is validated. I could implement queuing in two ways (as I see it, maybe you have other propositions): A process that checks the table for records with status 1. If it finds one, it validates the session. So, sessions are validated one after one. If a candidate finishes its session, a message is sent to a MSMQ queue. Another process listens to the queue and validates sessions one after one. Now, What would be the best approach? Where do you start the process that will validate sessions? In your global.asax (application_start)? As a windows service? As an exe on the root of the website that is started in application_start? To me, using the table and looking for records with status 1 seems the easiest way.

  Long speech short: How can I make hundreds of simultaneously running processes communicate with a database through one or few permanent sessions? The whole story: I once built a number crunching engine that handles vast amounts of large data files by forking off one child after another giving each a small number of files to work on. File locking, progress monitoring and result propagation happen in an Oracle database which all (sub-)processes access at various times using an application-specific module which encapsulates DBI. This worked well at first, but now with higher volumes of input data, the number of database sessions (one per child, and they can be very short-lived) constantly being opened and closed is becoming an issue. I now want to centralise database access so that there are only one or few fixed database sessions which handle all database access for all the (sub-)processes. The presence of the database abstraction module should make the changes easy because the function calls in the worker instances can stay the same. My problem is that I cannot think of a suitable way to enhance said module in order to establish communication between all the processes and the database connector(s). I thought of message queueing, but couldn't come up with a way of connecting a large herd of requestors with one or few database connectors in a way so that bidirectional communication is possible (for collecting the query result). An asynchronous approach could help here in that all requests are written to the same queue and the database connector servicing the request will "call back" to submit the result. But my mind fails me in generating an image clear enough so that I can paint into code. Threading instead of forking might have given me an easier start, but this would now require massive changes to the code base that I'm not prepared to do to a live system. The more I think of it, the more the base idea looks like a pre-forked web server to me only that it doesn't serve web pages but database queries. Any ideas on what to dig into, and where? Sample (pseudo) code to inspire me, links to possibly related articles, ready solutions on CPAN maybe?

• Devise password reset issue (new_user?)

  When a user's email is inputted into the forgot password form and submitted, I am receiving an error saying login can't be blank. I looked around devise.en.yml for this error message, but can't seem to find it anywhere. • Improved Performance on PeopleSoft Combined Benchmark using SPARC T4-4

  Oracle's SPARC T4-4 server running Oracle's PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 combined online and batch benchmark achieved a world record 18,000 concurrent users experiencing subsecond response time while executing a PeopleSoft Payroll batch job of 500,000 employees in 32.4 minutes. This result was obtained with a SPARC T4-4 server running Oracle Database 11g Release 2, a SPARC T4-4 server running PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 application server and a SPARC T4-2 server running Oracle WebLogic Server in the web tier. The SPARC T4-4 server running the application tier used Oracle Solaris Zones which provide a flexible, scalable and manageable virtualization environment. The average CPU utilization on the SPARC T4-2 server in the web tier was 17%, on the SPARC T4-4 server in the application tier it was 59%, and on the SPARC T4-4 server in the database tier was 47% (online and batch) leaving significant headroom for additional processing across the three tiers. The SPARC T4-4 server used for the database tier hosted Oracle Database 11g Release 2 using Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) for database files management with I/O performance equivalent to raw devices. Performance Landscape Results are presented for the PeopleSoft HRMS Self-Service and Payroll combined benchmark. The new result with 128 streams shows significant improvement in the payroll batch processing time with little impact on the self-service component response time. Specifically, the payroll batch processes are started when the online workload reaches steady state (the maximum number of online users) and overlap with online transactions for the duration of the steady state. Key Points and Best Practices Two PeopleSoft Domain sets with 200 application servers each on a SPARC T4-4 server were hosted in 2 separate Oracle Solaris Zones to demonstrate consolidation of multiple application servers, ease of administration and performance tuning. Each Oracle Solaris Zone was bound to a separate processor set, each containing 15 cores (total 120 threads). The default set (1 core from first and third processor socket, total 16 threads) was used for network and disk interrupt handling. This was done to improve performance by reducing memory access latency by using the physical memory closest to the processors and offload I/O interrupt handling to default set threads, freeing up cpu resources for Application Servers threads and balancing application workload across 240 threads. A total of 128 PeopleSoft streams server processes where used on the database node to complete payroll batch job of 500,000 employees in 32.4 minutes. • tightvnc authentication failure

  When I run a tightvnc client to establish a VNC session I sometimes receive an error message that suggests there are repeated failed VNC login attempts or a brute force attack. The message dialog title is "unsupported security type" and the text content is "too many authentication failures, try another connection? yes/no". This problem goes away if I reboot the Ubuntu server and reload the VNC server program and try again. From that point, it will work for multiple VNC sessions. My VNC sessions are typically about 20 minutes. At some time in the future, the problem may recur so it seems correlated to the time the server has been up or the time tightvnc has been loaded. Typically it takes only a day or so before the problem comes back. I am using tightvnc 1.3 on an server running Ubuntu 12.04. The version of vncserver is rather dated because that seems to be all that is available from tightvnc for linux servers. On the client side I use the newest Java-based VNC client (version 2.5) for both Windows access and Ubuntu access. All my VNC sessions are via SSH. I am the only user and I will typically use only the same client computer. How can I stop this problem from recurring? Edit I found the log file. This is a small excerpt of what I am seeing. Essentially, various IPs, not my own, are attempting to connect.   I am wondering conceptually how load-balancing works on the EJB-level (not web session replication) with Java EE containers like Glassfish. From what I have gleaned your remote interface is a proxy that delegates your call to one of many servers you may have in an environment. If things fail are they supposed to be able to "finish" on another server? I want to understand the basic theory behind this load balancing, why is it better than a bunch of servers all running a plain web application with session affinity on a load-balancer?

• Varnish configuration to only cache for non-logged in users

  I have a Ruby on Rails application fronted by varnish+nginx. As most of the sites content is static unless you are a logged in user, I want to cache the site heavily with varnish when a user is logged out but only to cache static assets when they are logged in. When a user is logged in they will have the cookie 'user_credentials' present in their Cookie: header, in addition I need to skip caching on /login and /sessions in order that a user can get their 'user_credentials' cookie in the first place. Rails by default does not set a cache friendly Cache-control header, but my application sets a "public,s-max-age=60" header when a user is not logged in. Nginx is set to return 'far future' expires headers for all static assets. The configuration I have at the moment is totally bypassing the cache for everything when logged in, including static assets — and is returning cache MISS for everything when logged out.   I have a setup of several Tomcat servers distributed between a few servers, all running the same thing. Apache is on top of Apache and a loadbalancer in front of the Apache servers. I want to cluster the Tomcats using Shared Session to minimize downtime and user interruption while deploying apps. I know clustering works within the same server but is it possible to setup Tomcat in a way that it shares sessions between servers on different machines? => Server 1 ==> Apache 1 ===> Tomcat 1 => Server 2 ==> Apache 2 ===> Tomcat 2 When Server/Tomcat 1 would be taken down, users and their sessions would transfer over to Server/Tomcat 2 and vice versa.

• Load balance between two virtual directories on a single machine running IIS6

  I'm trying to simulate a production environment using a single VM. The production environment will have 3 servers behind a load balancer with sticky sessions. Production will be using IIS6. For development, I have no need to distribute load, but I want to make sure the team does not write code that relies on a single-server module. I have been hoping to set up two virtual directories and find some isapi filter to perform some rudimentary software load balancing, but I've been unable to locate anything suitable. isapi_rewrite comes close but there's no ability for a random rewrite. I don't even need sticky sessions since the application does not (in theory) rely on them. Is there something easy/free to do this, or am I stuck with multiple VMs and a NLB setup (which seems like total overkill)?

• Looking at desktop virtualization, but some users need 3D support. Is HP Remote Graphics a viable solution?

  My company is looking at desktop virtualization, and are planning to move all of the desktop compute resources into the server room or data center, and provide users with thin clients for access. In most cases, a simple VNC or Remote Desktop solution is adequate, but some users are running visualizations that require 3D capability--something that VNC and Remote Desktop cannot support. Rather than making an exception and providing desktop machines for these users, complicating out rollout and future operations, we are considering adding servers with GPUs, and using HP's Remote Graphics to provide access from the thin client. The demo version appears to work acceptably, but there is a bit of a learning curve, it's not clear how well it would work for multiple simultaneous sessions, and it's not clear if it would be a good solution to apply to non-3D sessions. If possible, as with the hardware, we want to deploy a single software solution instead of a mishmash. If anyone has had experience managing a large installation of HP Remote Graphics, I would appreciate any feedback you can provide.

• Files slow to save sometimes after Ubuntu upgrade

  I haven't quite been able to track down why this happens sometimes in Ubuntu 10.04 and not other times. I'll go into gedit or OpenOffice.org and try to save files, and, during some sessions, it will take up to 10 seconds to save the file, sometimes causing the program to become unresponsive. But during these same sessions, the files sometimes save instantly. This didn't start happening until after the 10.04 (Lucid) upgrade. I suspect that something is reading all the changes I make, or that there's some other big file action going on, or something like that. I disabled Tracker a while back, before the upgrade, and don't see it under the settings - could it be back under a different name under Lucid? You probably don't already know the answer, but how can I go about finding the cause of this problem?

  I am trying to setup zsh so that it shares command history between different zsh sessions: in multiple tabs in multiple gnome-terminals in different screen sessions I have put this in .zshrc #To save every command before it is executed (this is different from bash's history -a solution): setopt inc_append_history #To retrieve the history file everytime history is called upon. setopt share_history but that does not work. e.g. I type 1 command: gedit afile and then I go to and zsh and type history. • Server suddenly running out of entropy

  Since a reboot yesterday, one of our virtual servers (Debian Lenny, virtualized with Xen) is constantly running out of entropy, leading to timeouts etc. when trying to connect over SSH / TLS-enabled protocols. Is there any way to check which process(es) is(/are) eating up all the entropy? Edit: What I tried: Adding additional entropy sources: time_entropyd, rng-tools feeding urandom back into random, pseudorandom file accesses – netted about 1 MiB additional entropy per second, problems still persisted Checking for unusual activity via lsof, netstat and tcpdump – nothing. No noticeable load or anything Stopping daemons, restarting permanent sessions, rebooting the entire VM – no change in behaviour What in the end worked: Waiting. Since about yesterday noon, there are no connection problems anymore. Entropy is still somewhat low (128 Bytes peak), but TLS/SSH sessions have no noticeable delay anymore. I'm slowly switching our clients back to TLS (all five of them!), but I don't expect any change in behavior now.

  Is a bad idea for any reason to leave accounts logged onto Windows remote desktop sessions? So instead of logging off, just closing the session so it locks. In this case, the limited number of remote desktop connections is not an issue. I am just wondering if anyone has seen sessions leak memory over time or maybe security issues with doing this, etc... I could see if programs were left open they might suck up and or leak memory, but has anyone seen this with Microsoft software such as Control Panels, Management Consoles, and Exchange System Administrator?

  Hello, we've run an Citrix Farm with 4 x Windows 2008 x64 (XenApp 5.0 FP3) and one server Win 2003 x86 (Xenapp 4.6). Yesterday we had a strange problem with Session logins. Existing Sessions could work without problems but new logins were not possible. In the AMC we could not see the Sessions on the Servers. After an reboot all worked fine again. We run the 32 Bit Server since 3 days in our farm (for one Application). Could it be possible that this behavior is caused of the mixed farm? -- (we got in this time a lot of wmi warnings that the Provider CitrixEvemtProv has been registered but it does not correctly impersonate user requests.

  Tomorrow (Friday 23/4/2010) I am delivering a session at the Cloud Grid Exchange in London at SkillsMatter (A top training company and superb supporter of development communities). To be perfectly honest – I’m more interested in attending than presenting as the sessions and speaker line up look great. But in the middle of all that I will be doing the following (rather cheekily named) session: Looking at the Clouds through dirty Windows Many developers assume that the Microsoft Windows Azure Platform for Cloud Computing is only relevant if you develop solutions using Microsoft Visual Studio and the .NET Framework. The reality is somewhat different. In the same way that developers can build great applications on Windows Server using a variety of programming languages, developers can do the same for Azure. Java, Tomcat, PHP, Ruby, Python, MySQL and more all work great on Azure. In this session we will take a lap around the services offered by the Azure PaaS and demonstrate just how easy it is to build and deploy applications built in .NET and other technologies. The session will be a mix of slides and demos – currently I plan to demo .NET and Ruby on Rails running on Azure – but I may flex that depending on how the morning sessions go and who turns up. • OTN Developer Days (Review) - San Juan, PR - April 29, 2010

  A quick update on the San Juan, PR event. First off it was a great success with the Keynote audience of 200+. Mickey Ralat, Managing Director Oracle Caribbean, kicked off the event with a quick introduction followed by me delivering the Keynote Message - The Fusion Development Platform which is the first session in the regular OTN DD events that we run in North America. Following this session was a partner, SDT, basically marketing their services which covers the Oracle stack and then following was a very brief presentation on APEX. After this we broke out into the various tracks of Java, (APEX) DB SQL Developer, .NET on Oracle. After the breakout we ran the following sessions in the Java track: Developing with JDBC, UCP, and Java in Database, Rich Internet Applications in Web 2.0, Development Made Simple Without Coding: Developing Reusable Business Components. As expected with the various tracks, we ended up with 50 - 70 in the various sessions within the JAVA track and the audience was very impressed with the power of JDeveloper/ADF 11g and we got a number of questions from licensing cost to upgrading / integrating from Forms. As for the Forms questions, I fielded a number of them and for those I couldn't, I pointed them towards Grants resources which seemed to suffice. They were all, for the most part, unaware of the recent 11.1.1.3 release which occurred only a couple of days prior to the event. The indication was that they were going to download it and use it for the lab that was included on the DVD which we did not have the time for them to even start on. • Dell XPS + Apple Mini-Display Adaptor + Projector = KABOOM

  Remember how I blogged about rolling with the punches? So today my buddy and Prairie Dev Con speaker James Chambers went to present on Microsoft MVC. He brought his fancy new Dell XPS laptop, which he had used to do presentations and stream internet video to a projector before. But today, the technology gods were not smiling… James tries to connect his laptop to the projector. Nothing. The projector just can’t recognize the connection. Realize that we’ve already had two sessions in that room already, so everything *should* work. The Dell XPS laptop James has doesn’t have a VGA port. Instead, it has HDMI and Mini-Display ports. James had one of the Apple mini-display to VGA adapters. If I connected my Mac Book Pro, I could connect no problem, so it wasn’t the adapter. He could connect his laptop to projectors before, so it wasn’t the laptop. And we’d already had sessions, so it wasn’t the projector. So what was it? Well, all three it turns out. Thanks to this post over at Irongeek.com we discovered that using Windows 7 on a Dell XPS with the Apple connector and a non-plug-in-play projector won’t work. So the fix was ditch the Apple connector, use the Star Tech model instead (listed in the Irongeek article). So James is good to go, he’s going to talk at the last session and we’ve moved the Windows 8 talk Jim Russell and I were going to do until tomorrow. Roll with the punches…
