  • restarted my computer and my wireless icon was missing and my sound no longer works

    I recently updated to 12.04 on my sony vaio VGN-N110G. I've had ubuntu on this laptop since 10.04 and haven't had any real problems. so i restarted my computer today and none of the unity desktop background showed up only the desktop with the files on it so i brought up the terminal and entered in unity -replace and restarted it and it came back up fine except that i noticed that my panel only had mail, volume, date/time, and power icons no wireless or bluetooth, i tried a couple of approaches to try and get it working again i tried nm-applet --sm-disable and it brought up a warning message, i'm not very skilled in code even though i've had ubuntu for four years but in the past versions it wasn't too big a problem

  • No audio driver for ECS 7050-M v1.0a for Windows 7?

    I have an Elitegroup 7050-M v1.0a motherboard and I've used the Realtek HD audio driver it came with for years under Windows XP. There was a nice mixer panel, an equalizer and sound profiles that added effects. All of these menus are gone now that I've moved on to Windows 7 64 Bit. All I have is the basic settings under system control - sound, but they are not nearly as detailed. To clarify: Sound works, but the advanced settings I got when using older OS's are gone. Older drivers don't seem to work under Win7 and I can't find one for Win7. So how can I fully utilize the capabilities of my HD sound chip under Win7?

  • poor font rendering in browsers on 12.04

    I'm using a Lenovo B570e. I've installed the mesa-utils for the graphic driver because it wasn't recognized by default. Now I have this: graphic card : Intel® Sandybridge Mobile x86/MMX/SSE2. I don't know if it's just my impression but I think all the images are a little bit pixelated and I think it have something to do with the drivers. Maybe is not the correct driver associated with it, I'm saying this because when I was on Windows 7 the name of the driver was something like " Intel hd graphics..." Any suggestions? Thank you!   • Weird noise coming out on Windows 7 when harddisk activity at peak?

    I'm having a very strange problem. I'm hearing a "choooooooooo kkkrrr" sound (Its not like the normal sound speakers make when powered on) all the time. When there is more Hard Disk r/w activity the sound increases and as HDD r/w activity slows down so the sound. I have two other OS installed on my system. I have tested, it only happens when I'm on Windows 7. I have no clue what the hell is happening !? Any help would be greatly appreciated.   • Render SVG font in Adobe Illistrator or Corel Draw

    Hello! I'm developing a project that produces SVG files with custom embed fonts. SVG font definition I compose as SVG font tag with help of http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fontface/generator or Batik SVG Toolkit. The resulted SVG file I try to open in following applications: Adobe Illustrator CS4 - text has default font and message noticed about font not found in system CorelDRAW X5 - text has default font and any messages don't noticed Batik SVG Browser (Squiggle) - renders text correctly The problem is all modern typographies use CorelDRAW and Abode Illustrator for print vector graphic and them render not correctly SVG. Solution As for me, I see follow solutions: Save the text with custom font as SVG path. This will work but, I can't find any solution that can convert text + TTF to SVG path data; Use other vector format, f.e. AI, EPS or CDR. This solution is difficult for me, because I use SVG paths as part of input data; Recommend our users to use Batik SVG Browser (Squiggle) or any other application which are based on Batik SVG Toolkit library. Batik SVG Toolkit requires Java runtime :( If anyone know some knowledge to open SVG embed fonts in Adobe Illustrator or CorelDRAW please share them. I would be grateful for any help.   • How to force an HTML JLabel in a JTree to resize when the font changes

    I'm updating a Java Swing application to support the user switching the app's font from normal size to a larger size (so the user can switch between the two sizes at runtime). One problem I'm having is with a JTree that uses HTML for the tree nodes to underline the text in some nodes (the HTML is just embedded in the JLabel of each tree node). One extra thing to know about the nodes is that they're a custom component, adding a JCheckBox in front of each JLabel. The problem is that once the JTree is visible, increasing the font size causes the nodes (containing underlined text) to not resize. The HTML for those nodes seems to prevent the node from becoming wider, so when the font changes, the text becomes truncated. I think my options are to either: 1) use another approach to make the text underlined, since removing the HTML from the JLabel causes it to resize properly when the font size changes, or 2) keep the HTML formatting and somehow force the JTree/JLabels to resize when the font size is updated (possibly by firing a property change event?). The code already calls SwingUtilities.updateComponentTreeUI() on the parent JFrame when the font size gets updated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! -Mike

  • Adding a font for use in ReportLab

    I'm trying to add a font to the python ReportLab so that I can use it for a function. The function is using canvas.Canvas to draw a bunch of text in a PDF, nothing complicated, but I need to add a fixed width font for layout issues. When I tried to register a font using what little info I could find, that seemed to work. But when I tried to call .addFont('fontname') from my Canvas object I keep getting "PDFDocument instance has no attribute 'addFont'" Is the function just not implemented? How do I get access to fonts other than the 10 or so default ones that are listed in .getAvailableFonts? Thanks. Some example code of what I'm trying to make happen: from reportlab.pdfgen import canvas c = canvas.Canvas('label.pdf') c.addFont('TestFont') #This throws the error listed above, regardless of what argument I use (whether it refers to a font or not). c.drawString(1,1,'test data here') c.showPage() c.save() To register the font, I tried from reportlab.lib.fonts import addMapping from reportlab.pdfbase import pdfmetrics pdfmetrics.registerFont(TTFont('TestFont', 'ghettomarquee.ttf')) addMapping('TestFont', 0, 0, 'TestFont') where 'ghettomarquee.ttf' was just a random font I had lying around.

  • 12.04 Random sounds sometimes after startup

    I'm not quite sure what the sound is, but it has only started happening in the last two days. The only way I can describe it would be that it sounds like a wooden xylophone being tapped lightly. It will play at random intervals ranging between 1 second to a couple minutes for up to a half hour (from what I have noticed) after startup. If anybody has any ideas as to what is causing this or how to fix it I would appreciate it. System information: Computer: Toshiba Satellite L655-S5160 Audio Driver: Conexant Audio Driver(v4.119.0.60; 07-14-2010; 41.89M)

  • Problem with audio sharing between different programs

    I've been using Linux for quite some time, but until now I've never run into any problems. I also saw the thread "Sound, stopping between multiple programs", but it is referring to a very old version... My problem is that when I run Diablo 3 (using PlayOnLinux) and Skype 4 at the same time, I only get audio from the program that I start first. If I start skype first and then Diablo 3, I have perfekt audio in Skype and sometimes I might hear a faint whisper of the Diablo sounds... This problem started after I changed motherboard to Asus p8z77-v pro with 16GB memory and Intel i7 3770K CPU. With the old motherboard, all this worked just fine. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04.   • Shortcut to switch between Analog Stereo output & HDMI audio output

    To switch to HDMI audio output (of monitor) and back to normal audio output from system audio jack (for headphones, as my monitor doesn't have audio out), I find myself opening up sound preferences and selecting the right channel everytime.   • Traktor Audio 2 DJ soundcard configuration

    I have a Traktor Audio 2 DJ USB sound card (the first version of what it's now called simply Traktor Audio 2) The problem in settings it only sees one output, when there should be two (I need that for Mixxx etc.) Also I want to be able set the sample rate to one of these: 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96 kHz or at least check which one is set. Additionally if possible setting the latency would be an advantage.   • How do I consistently activate USB speakers

    I have a pair of Ricco USB speakers. As these are external, I sought to use them with 11.10. They are recognised by 'aplay -l' and Pulseaudio- I have selected them, but, have to reset the volume, every time I log on. I can also only recieve feedback and sound from apps and programs- like Kaffeine- on this boosted volume- I cannot get System Sounds, like logon or logoff. I have tried the alsamixer install that used to work, to no effect. Is their an app that I should be trying or is this feat impossible ? I have tried to delete all the files in .pulse and rebooting or just deletion of the entire .purge directory, as Michael K suggested- neither work as the directory is automatically rewritten on reboot. Ideas?

  • No 'Hardware' tab in audio and no profiles

    If I run the 12.x ubuntu (latest May 2012) from the CD, I get full audio settings, and sound playing in speaker. Profiles let me change analog to digital in/out. Once I run install from the same CD onto the laptop HD, once it boots the first time, after selecting audio settings, there is no 'Hardware' tab and no way to change profiles. Worst part is the audio device is set to SPDIF so nothing comes out of the speakers. Very off how booting off the CD I can get analog audio, and installing to HD and booting seems to limit the profile to something useless. Laptop is a 5 year old Dell D820 with Nvidea 128meg video on a 1920x1200 screen and T7200 CPU. I suspect if I could get the damn HARDWARE tab back in audio settings, I could just select the proper Analog profile - just as is the case if running from a boot CD. Searched the web, no similar problems found... any help appreciated!

  • Can I get the Waves Maxx speaker effects to work in Ubuntu?

    I have a new machine that comes with JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3. On Windows it sounds perfect, though in Ubuntu 12.04 I get cheap/sound with simple mp3 files. I have tried a few things on different blogs but no luck so far.   • Drawing an animation over an already drawn screen

    I am working on a XNA WP7 card game whose basic prototype is complete. In game screen, 6 cards are displayed at a time (3 for each of the two players say 1,2 and 3). If player A attacks one of player B's card then I want to show an animation over player B's card i.e the victim card(say a claw scratch for e.g.) My question is how do I approach with the animation system so that I can draw an animation over a card upon certain events e.g. dead, fire, claw attack etc. I have an attack function which detects which type of card is attacking which type of card. Depending on the type of attacker card I want to display the animation on the victim card. Can I call animation classes function for different animations in the attack function itself without actually having to call separate draw and update functions. If so, how? Also how do I play sound at the same time when the animation is going on?

  • Analog and digital audio output at the same time

    My speakers use a digital input, but my headphones use an analog input. I have them both plugged in, and when I want to use the headphones I just turn off the speakers and switch on the headphones. I know that simultaneous output on digital and analog is supported by the hardware, because it worked fine in Windows XP. But on Ubuntu, I seem to only get one at a time, depending on which setting is selected in the combo box located at System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Hardware. How can I get simultaneous analog and digital output without having to switch the profile every time? I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 and it's an HDA Intel chip.
