  • Part-time Programming Job London

    - by Bluechip Solutions
I am a student at Middlesex Universtity, London studying Information Technology. I really love software development and I have taught myself how to write HTML + CSS, JavaScript (I use jQuery and AngularJS) and Java (I learnt this in school). I have developed few apps (a desktop app in Java and a mobile app with AngularJS and PhoneGap) I am looking at applying for a part-time programming job to develop myself. Are there part time jobs available for someone like me and are my skill set enough to get me a job? I understand this topic may not be ideal here but this is the only place I know can provide me answers. Thank you!

  • Simple way to embed an MP3 audio file in a (static) HTML file, starting to play at a specifc time?

    - by Marcel
Hi all, I want to produce a simple, static HTML file, that has one or more embedded MP3 files in it. The idea is to have a simple mean of listening to specific parts of an mp3 file. On a single click on a visual element, the sound should start to play; However, not from the beginning of the file, but from a specified starting point in that file (and play to the end of the file). This should work all locally from the client's local filesystem, the HTML file and the MP3 files do not reside on a webserver. So, how to play the MP3 audio from a specific starting point? The solution I am looking for should be as simple as possible, while working on most browsers, including IE, Firefox and Safari. Note: I know the <embed> tag as described here, but this seems not to work with my target browsers. Also I have read about jPlayer and other Java-Script-based players, but since I have never coded some JavaScript, I would prefer a HTML-only solution, if possible.

  • calculate intersection between two segments in a symmetric way

    - by Elazar Leibovich
When using the usual formulas to calculate intersection between two 2D segments, ie here, if you round the result to an integer, you get non-symmetric results. That is, sometimes, due to rounding errors, I get that intersection(A,B)!=intersection(B,A). The best solution is to keep working with floats, and compare the results up to a certain precision. However, I must round the results to integers after calculating the intersection, I cannot keep working with floats. My best solution so far was to use some full order on the segments in the plane, and have intersection to always compare the smaller segment to the larger segment. Is there a better method? Am I missing something?

  • Daylight Savings Time and Microsoft Exchange woes

    - by Scott
Ever since the switch from Standard Time to Daylight Time, the time on our e-mail messages has been ahead by one hour. This symptom has me wondering if the cause is improper configuration of daylight savings settings. Since we're in a client/server environment, the clients synchronize with the server, and the server synchronizes with Boulder, Colorado. If I set both the server and the clients to automatically switch to daylight savings, the clients seem to regard the server as being set to Standard Time and set themselves an hour ahead of it, which is really two hours ahead. Should the server switch to daylight savings and the clients follow along on their next synchronization, or should the server stay on Standard Time and the clients switch over? The system clock on the Exchange Server is currently displaying the correct time. How do I get the e-mail messages to display the correct time in Outlook?

  • How do you use Java 1.6 Annotation Processing to perform compile time weaving?

    - by Steve
    I have created an annotation, applied it to a DTO and written a Java 1.6 style annotationProcessor. I can see how to have the annotationProcessor write a new source file, which isn't what I want to do, I cannot see or find out how to have it modify the existing class (ideally just modify the byte code). The modification is actually fairly trivial, all I want the processor to do is to insert a new getter and setter where the name comes from the value of the annotation being processed. My annotation processor looks like this; @SupportedSourceVersion(SourceVersion.RELEASE_6) @SupportedAnnotationTypes({ "com.kn.salog.annotation.AggregateField" }) public class SalogDTOAnnotationProcessor extends AbstractProcessor { @Override public boolean process(final Set<? extends TypeElement> annotations, final RoundEnvironment roundEnv) { //do some stuff } }

  • Message Date/Time tag in Lotus Notes

    - by TeeKay
I've noticed that within Notes (8.5.2, basic client, fat client and iNotes) the date/time displayed on the eMail envelope AND the date/time on the message header is the same and appearently that time that Domino received the message. When using BES, the message forwarded to the BlackBerry by Domino/BES has the RECEIVED date/time on the envelope and the SENT date/time displayed in the message. In the basic/fat client with properties the sent time is viewable in one of the "Received" tags. Having the sent time easily viewable is helpful, especially if your trying to trouble-shoot a problem. Is this a configuration feature? Is it selectable in the client or in Domino? Thx

  • Is it worth investing time in learning low level Java?

    - by Kevin Rave
Low level Java, I mean, bits, bytes, bit masking, GC internals, JVM stuff, etc in the following contexts: - When you are building an enterprise app using frameworks like Spring, Hybernate, etc. - Interviews for a Sr Java Developer position where you are expected work on a existing Enterprise App that was built using some frameworks (Spring, EJB, Hybernate, etc) - Architects (Java) I understand knowing the very low level is "good". But how often do you think / use of these in the real-world, unless you are developing something from the ground-up keeping performance in mind?

  • Rejigging a floating point equation ...

    - by Jamie
I'd like to know if there is a way to improve the accuracy of calculating a slope. (This came up a few months back here). It seems by changing: float get_slope(float dXa, float dXb, float dYa, float dYb) { return (dXa - dXb)/(dYa - dYb); } to float get_slope(float dXa, float dXb, float dYa, float dYb) { return dXa/(dYa - dYb) - dXb/(dYa - dYb); } might be an improvement. Suggestions? Edit: It's precision I'm after, not efficiency.

  • How many double numbers are there between 0.0 and 1.0?

    - by polygenelubricants
This is something that's been on my mind for years, but I never took the time to ask before. Many (pseudo) random number generators generate a random number between 0.0 and 1.0. Mathematically there are infinite numbers in this range, but double is a floating point number, and therefore has a finite precision. So the questions are: Just how many double numbers are there between 0.0 and 1.0? Are there just as many numbers between 1 and 2? Between 100 and 101? Between 10^100 and 10^100+1? Note: if it makes a difference, I'm interested in Java's definition of double in particular.

  • Exchange stops working after changing System Time

    - by L.M
I am currently in a situation where the system time of my windows machine differs 6 hours from the actual local time. I tried chaning the system time of my windows machine 6 hours back to match the actual local time. The issue is, when the system time is changed, Exchange stops working as it wont start anymore. When i change the time back Exchange works again. Here is the error that it shows when im trying to open the management console after changing the system time. The Follwing error occured while attempting to connect to the specified server "servername". The attempt to connect to http://servername/PowerShell using "Kerberos" authentication failed: Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message: Access is denied. For more information, see the about_remote_troubleshooting Help topic. Any Solutions to this problem?

However, I think this is a red herring because I've: shut down and turned back on the Mac, restarted the VM, tried a different VM (for which I never installed isight-firmware-tools, and created an entirely new ubuntu vm. All instances have had this problem. Similarly, other viewers, such as cheese, avplay, avconv have had all various kinds of errors.

  • What are the most known arbitrary precision arithmetic implementation approaches?

    - by keykeeper
I'm going to write a class library for .NET which provide an implementation of arbitrary precision arithmetic for integer, rational and maybe complex numbers. What best known approaches should I become familiar with? I tried to start with Knuth's TAOCP Vol.2 (Seminumerical Algorithms, Chapter 4 – Arithmetic) but it's too complicated. At least I couldn't get the ideas in a relatively short period of time.

  • Project Time Tracker

    - by Geertjan
Based on yesterday's blog entry, let's do something semi useful and display, in the project popup, which is available when you right-click a project in the Projects window, the time since the last change was made anywhere in the project, i.e., we can listen recursively to any changes done within a project and then update the popup with the newly acquired information, dynamically: import java.awt.event.ActionEvent; import java.text.DateFormat; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.Collection; import java.util.List; import javax.swing.AbstractAction; import org.netbeans.api.project.Project; import org.netbeans.api.project.ProjectUtils; import org.openide.awt.ActionID; import org.openide.awt.ActionReference; import org.openide.awt.ActionRegistration; import org.openide.awt.StatusDisplayer; import org.openide.filesystems.FileAttributeEvent; import org.openide.filesystems.FileChangeListener; import org.openide.filesystems.FileEvent; import org.openide.filesystems.FileRenameEvent; import org.openide.util.Lookup; import org.openide.util.LookupEvent; import org.openide.util.LookupListener; import org.openide.util.Utilities; import org.openide.util.WeakListeners; @ActionID( category = "Demo", id = "org.ptt.TrackProjectSelectionAction") @ActionRegistration( lazy = false, displayName = "NOT-USED") @ActionReference( path = "Projects/Actions", position = 0) public final class TrackProjectSelectionAction extends AbstractAction implements LookupListener, FileChangeListener { private Lookup.Result<Project> projects; private Project context; private Long startTime; private Long changedTime; private DateFormat formatter; private List<Project> timedProjects; public TrackProjectSelectionAction() { putValue("popupText", "Timer"); formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:mm:ss"); timedProjects = new ArrayList<Project>(); projects = Utilities.actionsGlobalContext().lookupResult(Project.class); projects.addLookupListener( WeakListeners.create(LookupListener.class, this, projects)); resultChanged(new LookupEvent(projects)); } @Override public void resultChanged(LookupEvent le) { Collection<? extends Project> allProjects = projects.allInstances(); if (allProjects.size() == 1) { Project currentProject = allProjects.iterator().next(); if (!timedProjects.contains(currentProject)) { String currentProjectName = ProjectUtils.getInformation(currentProject).getDisplayName(); putValue("popupText", "Start Timer for Project: " + currentProjectName); StatusDisplayer.getDefault().setStatusText( "Current Project: " + currentProjectName); timedProjects.add(currentProject); context = currentProject; } } } @Override public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { refresh(); } protected void refresh() { startTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); String formattedStartTime = formatter.format(startTime); putValue("popupText", "Timer started: " + formattedStartTime + " (" + ProjectUtils.getInformation(context).getDisplayName() + ")"); } @Override public void fileChanged(FileEvent fe) { changedTime = System.currentTimeMillis(); formatter = new SimpleDateFormat("mm:ss"); String formattedLapse = formatter.format(changedTime - startTime); putValue("popupText", "Time since last change: " + formattedLapse + " (" + ProjectUtils.getInformation(context).getDisplayName() + ")"); startTime = changedTime; } @Override public void fileFolderCreated(FileEvent fe) {} @Override public void fileDataCreated(FileEvent fe) {} @Override public void fileDeleted(FileEvent fe) {} @Override public void fileRenamed(FileRenameEvent fre) {} @Override public void fileAttributeChanged(FileAttributeEvent fae) {} } Some more work needs to be done to complete the above, i.e., for each project you somehow need to maintain the start time and last change and redisplay that whenever the user right-clicks the project.

  • Web application date time localization best practice at 201x

    - by Hieu Lam
Hi all, I have worked for various web projects but correct date time localization have not been done and considered throroughly so I want to ask this very typical problem here and I want to hear comments from expert in this problem What is the correct strategy for storing a date/time value from client from server As I understand, because of locale and timezone so we have to do the conversion, I have heard about GMT or UTC time and after do some search it seems that UTC is more accurate ? so we will convert from client time - UTC+0 when saving and when we read the value from server to client, we convert from server time back to client time again ? However, I see in some website, at the bottom have the sentence "All times are in UTC", "All times are in GMT" and also "All times are in your local time". So maybe not all the sites do the convertion back and forth ? And in that case the user has to manually do the date/time conversion ? How to display the date/time convenient to user based on his locale and region How to provide personalization on date/time value ? I had one time depends on vbscript to do the display and the format is read from windows regional and format settings automatically. But without vbscript how can we determine a date/time pattern for a user of a specific locale. Do we have to store a mapping between a locale and pattern somewhere and do the conversion at the server side ? Although date/time conversion is needed in most case, there's situation where only date matter for example if my birthday is 2 Feb 1980, it should be the same for all locale and no conversion should be done. How can we address this issue.

  • How do you convert date taken from a bash script to milliseconds in java program?

    - by Matt Pascoe
I am writing a piece of code in java that needs to take a time sent from a bash script and parse the time to milliseconds. When I check the millisecond conversion on the date everything is correct except for the month I have sent which is January instead of March. Here is the variable I create in the bash script, which later in the script I pass to the java program: TIME=`date +%m%d%Y_%H:%M:%S` Here is the java code which parses the time to milliseconds: String dt = "${scriptstart}"; java.text.SimpleDateFormat scriptStart = new java.text.SimpleDateFormat("MMDDyyyy_HH:mm:ss"); long start = scriptStart.parse(dt).getTime(); The goal of this statement is to find the elapsed time between the start of the script and the current system time. To troubleshoot this I printed out the two: System Time = 1269898069496 (converted = Mon Mar 29 2010 16:27:49 GMT-0500 (Central Daylight Time)) Script Start = 03292010_16:27:45 Script Start in Milli = 1264804065000 (Converted = Fri Jan 29 2010 16:27:45 GMT-0600 (Central Standard Time))

  • Problems setting NTP sever with w32tm for a DC that is a Hyper-V guest

    - by R.Tonheim
Hello ! I have tried to sett my DC to get its time from several NTP severs. I follow this answer (http://serverfault.com/questions/24298/w32time-sync-problems-for-hyper-v-guests-w32time-event-ids-38-24-29-35/24299#24299) to do it. First I disable Time Synchronization in the Hyper-V Integration Services for each guest. Then restart the Windows Time serviceon the guest. I had before this used this command: w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntp.uio.no;timekeeper. uio.no;nissen.uio.no;0.no.pool.ntp.org;1.no.pool.ntp.org;2.no.pool.ntp.org" /syn cfromflags:manual /reliable:yes /update And the cmd sad: The command completed successfully. But the time was still 10 min wrong... I run w32tm again after restarted the DC without it having any effect. The w32tm /query /status still say: "Source: Local CMOS Clock" FROM MY CMD: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. • Help analyzing traceroute

    - by Abdulla
Hello, my name is Abdulla and I'm from Kuwait. Sorry for my question as I know its not technically challenging. I'm facing some problems with my internet connection. My company has a DSL 2mb connection. My main problem is latency, in the morning its good but after that its gets really bad. My Internet provider says there's nothing wrong and that everything is working perfectly. I tried to explain to them the latency issue but they say that as long as I'm getting the download speed there isn't anything I can do about it. Hello, my name is Abdulla and I'm from Kuwait. Sorry for my question as I know its not technically challenging. I'm facing some problems with my internet connection while gaming, I have DSL 2mb connection. My main problem is latency, in the morning its good but after that its gets really bad. My internet provider says there's nothing wrong and that everything is working perfectly. I tried to explain to them the latency issue but they say that as long as I'm getting the download speed there isn't anything I can do about it. I only want to know if this is true and that the company can't do anything before I change my internet provider, as I feel that the guys at the contact center might getting back to me without asking tech support. I am having issues with MySQL all of the sudden today. Details: OS: CentOS release 5.7 Server type: Parallels virtuozzo container running on mediatemple DV 4.0 package Average total memory usage: <500mb Total memory usage allowed: 1gb (part of shared pool for emergency only, users are only guaranteed 500mb) Processor: 1ghz Main database sizes with most usage: 275mb & 107mb server stack: nginx 1.0.10, mysql 5.1.54, php 5.3.8 with php-fpm innodb_buffer_pool_size=100M php-fpm max children: 5 Webapps: custom php-based sites, magento & drupal slow query timeout is set to 1 second Steps I completed towards diagnosis: Cannot restart container yet - I will try later tonight when our domestic traffic has dropped Enabled mysql and php-fpm slowlog. Found functions that did DB queries in php-fpm slowlog were taking over 1s to complete at times Found some simple queries in mysql slowlog taking well over 1s to complete that should take less than 1s. Most interesting - execution time seems to spike at times. A query will take .2s a couple times, then one time it will take 8s to run the same query. These results were verified by running raw SQL queries through mysql command line. Top does not reveal anything too interesting Only resource related thing i can see is load averages much higher than normal Up until today, mysql has been fine, there have been no major changes to the db since yesterday. Sometimes things are so bad, I am seeing bad gateway errors after 60s of execution time. Innodb is doing on average 300-1400 reads/sec. Mysql is doing 3-10 queries/sec slow query count in 2 hours uptime is 171 (with slow timeout at 1 second) Tried restarting mysql, nginx, php-fpm multiple times For example: UPDATE `catalogsearch_query` SET `query_text` = 'EW 90', `num_results` = '7532', `popularity` = '99180', `redirect` = NULL, `synonym_for` = NULL, `store_id` = '1', `display_in_terms` = '1', `is_active` = '1', `is_processed` = '1', `updated_at` = '2012-05-08 21:38:31' WHERE (query_id='31'); This query took 17sec to complete one time, rest of the time around .079 sec. But varies, sometimes 1sec, sometimes .004 sec. This is running the same query, over and over with a couple seconds time in between each. Most tables are innodb, and sometimes I noticed the lock time taking 90% of the query execution time, but most of the time lock time is insignificant. Any idea what's going on here?

  • CPU/Mem/Disk utilization (average) after process has completed

    - by BassKozz
Ubuntu Server 9.10 So there is the time command which will show you the time it took for a specific process/command to run after the command has completed. For example: :~$ time ls real 0m0.020s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.000s I'd like to also collect the average CPU usage, Memory, and Disk (i/o) utilization after the process has completed using time (or another command if necessary). How can I accomplish this? Mainly I am using this to benchmark MySQL import performance using different innodb_buffer_pool_size settings.

  • OS X wants to back up Macintosh HD to itself

    - by slhck
From time to time, OS X (10.6) will ask me if I want to perform a backup of my Macintosh HD, but the backup destination is obviously the HD itself. I have not plugged in any external device, nor is there a Time Capsule network share. A message like this will appear: Moreover, the Macintosh HD will suddenly have a Time Machine icon in Finder. Has somebody experienced the same and could help me identify how to stop OS X from using its own disk as the backup destination?

  • ntpdate cannot receive data

    - by Hengjie
I have a problem where running ntpdate on my server doesn't return any data therefore I get the following error: [root@server etc]# ntpdate -d -u -v time.nist.gov 12 Apr 01:10:09 ntpdate[32072]: ntpdate [email protected] Fri Nov 18 13:21:21 UTC 2011 (1) Looking for host time.nist.gov and service ntp host found : 24-56-178-141.co.warpdriveonline.com transmit(24.56.178.141) transmit(24.56.178.141) transmit(24.56.178.141) transmit(24.56.178.141) transmit(24.56.178.141) 24.56.178.141: Server dropped: no data server 24.56.178.141, port 123 stratum 0, precision 0, leap 00, trust 000 refid [24.56.178.141], delay 0.00000, dispersion 64.00000 transmitted 4, in filter 4 reference time: 00000000.00000000 Thu, Feb 7 2036 14:28:16.000 originate timestamp: 00000000.00000000 Thu, Feb 7 2036 14:28:16.000 transmit timestamp: d3303975.1311947c Thu, Apr 12 2012 1:10:13.074 filter delay: 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 0.00000 filter offset: 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 delay 0.00000, dispersion 64.00000 offset 0.000000 12 Apr 01:10:14 ntpdate[32072]: no server suitable for synchronization found I have tried Googling the 'no server suitable for synchronization found' error online and I have tried disabling my firewall (running iptables -L returns no rules). I have also confirmed with my DC that there are no rules that are blocking ntp (port 123). Does anyone have any ideas on how I may fix this?
