• Algorithms for City Simulation?

  I want to create a city filled with virtual creatures. Say like Sim City, where each creature walks around, doing it's own tasks. I'd prefer the city to not 'explode' or do weird things -- like the population dies off, or the population leaves, or any other unexpected crap. Is there a set of basic rules I can encode each agent with so that the city will be 'stable'? (Much like how for physics simulations, we have some basic rules that govern everything; is there a set of rules that governs how a simulation of a virtual city will be stable?) I'm new to this area and have no idea what algorithms/books to look into. Insights deeply appreciated. Thanks!

Is there a way to say: $fields['a_' . 1 - 17] = "One, Two" Etc... Just curious... if not, I'll brute force it.

Can somebody help me translate those ISAPI rules to APACHE mod_rewrite? I don't know how to 'translate' those rules... I have a wcf service that has data objects with validation rules defined with attributes, using the validation application block . On my client side (WPF), I have a service reference. When I update the service reference the generated classes do not have the validation rules attributes in them. How can I get the rules from the service? Am I missing some step, or is it not possible?

  Hi there So, say I have a string to parse with a given format that maps to a tree like data structure. The string is kinda similar to a folder path, and the structure is similar to a file structure, except its got some rules so for something@cat1@otherSomething you would get /something/cat1/otherSomething for something@cat2@otherSomething you would get /something/cat2/otherSomething other examples /OtherThing/cat1/otherSomething/Blah /OtherThing/cat4/otherSomething Where something, cat1, otherSomethign, etc are some sort of instances of ICategory There are certain rules that control what subcategories are valid and which subcategories are not acceptable, at the moment I m considering a heavy Object hierachy, but I know this is not a flexible solution, I d prefer the categories to be a bit more general but again, since there are rules about what can go next I m not sure how to do this. An example of a rule can be: OtherThing can only have subcategories cat1 and cat4 ( anything else is invalid) An option would be to use some sort of convention based aproach to instantiate a particular class given a subsection of the string(like cat4) but it seems a bit too complex, I m all ears Thanks

• Using Drools to provide error processing and consequence management

  Hi, I am working on a module whose purpose is to process Java exceptions and decide upon a strategy for dealing with them. The exceptions could be things I know about (explicit business exceptions eg TransformationException) or more general environmental stuff (JMS errors, IO errors etc) The facts inserted into the knowledge base are all the same class, and wrap (contain) an Exception. I want to write a rule that will explicitly match the exceptions I know how to deal with (eg TransformationException) and have another rule that catches 'everything else' The problem seems to me to be that for a fact containing a TransformationException, both rules will fire and the output will be uncertain. How would I go about writing such exclusive rules without relying on salience to steer the order of execution (this seems to be bad practice from what I have read)? I have a solution in place that I am not happy with whereby the outcome depends on the order in which the rules are defined in my .drl.

  I am trying to set Apache environment variables (for use in PHP) with the [E=VAR:VAL] flag on RewriteRule rules in an .htaccess file. I have already discovered the variables are accessed in PHP as server variables $_SERVER rather than $_ENV (which makes a certain amount of sense). However, my problem is for some rules the [E=VAR:VAL] flag works as expected and I end up with a variable $_SERVER['VAR'] but for other rules I end with a variable $_SERVER['REDIRECT_VAR'] or $_SERVER['REDIRECT_REDIRECT_VAR'], etc A. What causes an Environment Variable set in Apache using the [E=VAR:VAL] flag to get renamed by having "REDIRECT_" appended to the front of the variable name? B. What can I do to make sure I end up with an Environment Variable with an unchanged name so I can access it in PHP as $SERVER['VAR'] without having to resort to checking for variations of the variable name having one of more instances of "REDIRECT" appended to the front of it?

• The best approach to customize Bootstrap Less files and keep it easy to be updated to future versions

  I'm wondering what the best way would be to customize the less files in Bootstrap and, at the mean time, keep it easy to be updated to future Bootstrap versions. It's straightforward to just modify the less files, but the problem is that when the next version of Bootstrap comes out, it might be painful to upgrade (because all the changes are already deeply mixed with the original sources.) Another approach would be similar to the open closed principle, that is, keeping the original less files unchanged, and adding my customized less files to overwrite the CSS rules I need. When Bootstrap gets updated, (hopefully) I can simply replace the less files and everything would work magically. However, regardless of the correctness of my assumption, the same CSS rules would be scattered in even more places and hard to manage. Also, the more we overwrite the CSS (not for compatibility or other purposes), the more bandwidth we waste. I know this highly depends on how the author of Bootstrap would handle the structure of the framework or even the naming of CSS rules, but I'd still like to hear everybody's opinions. Thanks.

  I have the following HTML snippet being rendered. <div style="display: block;" id="rulesformitem" class="formitem"> <label for="rules" id="ruleslabel">Rules:</label> <textarea cols="2" rows="10" id="rules"/> </div> This is my CSS: textarea { border:1px solid #999999; width:100%; margin:5px 0; padding:3px; } Is the problem is that the text area ends up being 8px wider (2px for border + 6px for padding) than the parent. Is there a way to continue to use border and padding but constrain the total size of the textarea to the width of the parent?

• Exchange 2010 setup /prepareAD fails to run

  I've tried installing Exchange 2010 on Windows Server 2008 R2 (only domain controller and all-in-one system). I did setup.exe /prepareAD, setup /prepareSchema and it worked fine the first time I did it. Unfortunately due to problem with Hub Transport installation related to (at least from what I've read) IPv6 being disabled (some say disabling it helped them while some enabling helped them). I did it the proper way by using registry entry to disable IPv6 but it still errored out. So i managed to uninstall everything (renamed some old entries in registry of failed Hub Transport roles and tried to reinstal Exchange after rebooting server. I current have an edge transport server and an exchange 2007 server. I want to route email like the follow: the edge picks up internet email to exchange and all out going email will go out the axway. I have two things to figure out: do I only have to build a new send connector on exchange to point to a smarthost (axway) and disable the send connector going to the transport edge server? and two The axway server has to route notifcations to people.   I've tried installing Exchange 2010 on Windows 2k8 R2. Following error occurred when installing Hub Transport Role. Hub Transport Role Failed Error: The following error was generated when "$error.Clear(); install-ExsetdataAtom -AtomName SharedMachineSettings -DomainController $RoleDomainController" was run: "An error occurred with error code '2147950640' and message 'There is no such object on the server.'.". Both failed and both required me to do some magic to uninstall Exchange, and try installation again. Feel free to shoot your ideas what can be done to resolve the error. In the end I will install HyperV and put Exchange 2010 on different server but that's not what the server owner wanted.

  I have a working exim setup with virtual users, working alright, except for when I try to send email to certain servers. These servers reject my emails because of #5.1.3 Invalid character ('@') in username. The offending header parts seem to be: Return-path: <"[email protected]"@smtp.example.com> and ...(envelope-from <"[email protected]"@smtp.example.com>)... The problem is that I cannot find where and why the usernames are being generated like this.   Device cisco 2911 router configuration support is required please. I have exchange server 2010 configured and working without any errors the problem is in cisco router configuration when exchange server sends emails out the receives WAN IP not the public ip. I have configured RDNS lookups with our MX record IP addesses that match the FQDN but all our emails are rejected because it does not match with the public ip. Receiving mails problem is not an problem all mails are coming through. i am sure i am missing something on the router configuration that does not sends the public ip, can any one help me to solve this issue. • Exchange mail users cannot send to certain lists

  First of all, everyone's on Exchange 2010 using OWA I have a dynamic distribution list that contains all users in my domain called 'staff'. I can send to this list, other people can send to this list, but I have one user that cannot send to this list. Sending to this list gives the user an email back with the error: Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups: Staff The e-mail address you entered couldn't be found. Please check the recipient's e-mail address and try to resend the message. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk. and then a bunch of diagnostic information that I don't want to paste here because I don't want to have to censor all of the sensitive information contained (lazy) Can you guys throw me some possible reasons why this would happen? If there are an innumerable number of reasons, where should I start to troubleshoot this? EDIT One Exchange server inside the network that acts as a transport server, client access server and mailbox server and one Edge Transport server in the DMZ.

• Why is mount -a not mounting fuse drive properly when executed remotely (via Fabric)?

  This is a weird bug and I'm not sure where it's coming from. Here's a quick run down of what I'm doing. I'm trying to mount a FUSE drive to an Amazon EC2 instance running Ubuntu 10.10 using s3fs (FUSE over Amazon). s3fs is compiled from source according to the instructions etc. I've also added an entry to /etc/fstab so that the drive mounts on boot. Here's what /etc/fstab looks like: # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass> proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0 LABEL=uec-rootfs / ext4 defaults 0 0 /dev/sda2 /mnt auto defaults,nobootwait,comment=cloudconfig 0 2 /dev/sda3 none swap sw,comment=cloudconfig 0 0 s3fs#mybucket /mnt/s3/mybucket fuse default_acl=public-read,use_cache=/tmp,allow_other 0 0 So the good news is that this works fine. On reboot the connection mounts correctly. I can also do: $ sudo umount /mnt/s3/mybucket $ sudo mount -a $ mountpoint /mnt/s3/mybucket /mnt/s3/mybucket is a mountpoint Great, right? Well here's the problem. I'm using Fabric to automate the process of building and managing this instance. I noticed I was getting this error message when using Fabric to build s3fs and set up the mount process: mountpoint: /mnt/s3/mybucket: Transport endpoint is not connected I isolated it down the the problem and built a fabric task that reproduces the problem: def remount_s3fs(): sudo("mount -a") Which does: [ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com] Executing task 'remount_s3fs' [ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com] sudo: mount -a [And yes, I was sure to unmount it before running this task.] When I check the mount using mountpoint I get: $ mountpoint /mnt/s3/mybucket mountpoint: /mnt/s3/mybucket: Transport endpoint is not connected Done. But if I run sudo mount -a at the command line, it works. Hrm. Here is that fab task output again, this time in full debug mode: [ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com] Executing task 'remount_s3fs' [ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.compute-1.amazonaws.com] sudo: sudo -S -p 'sudo password:' /bin/bash -l -c "mount -a" Again, I get that transport endpoint not connected error. I've also tried copying and pasting the exact command run into my ssh session (i.e. sudo -S -p 'sudo password:' /bin/bash -l -c "mount -a") and it works fine. So...that's my problem. Any ideas?

• Postfix how to triggering my script when outgoing email status is sent?

  I want to run a program when postfix has successfully sent out a mail (local or remote). I would like to pass the headers to program and if possible also the destination ip or address (exclude spam filter delivery). I just have an idea: Delivery Status Notification processing via uniqe transport program, but I'd prefer the above. My goal is to be recorded lifetime (events) of email: it came, it went out (from, to, subject, datetime, message id, message status: bounce, sent). I would only need the state of the outgoing mail, because incoming and bounce program is working. It is possible to trigger a program (similar to a transport pipe/spawn) or DSN "cheat" stay? Thanks in advance for any reply!
