  • Install virtualization software on a remote linux machine as a non-root user

    - by Cetin Sert
Hi, 1) Is there a way for me to install VirtualBox as a non root user? I compiled it from the sources but cannot find a way to load the kernel modules it requires? Is there anyway to make it run? 2) Is there any other virtualization software you have ever installed on linux successfully as a non root user, VMWare, Parallels, etc.? The aim is to run Windows as a virtual machine with more than 16GB RAM. Bests, Cetin

  • Linux Fiber Channel Host Setup Basic

    - by Jim
I've been googling for about 4 hours now with no luck. I am trying to setup a Linux server running Oracle Server 6.3 as a Fiber Channel host. And then connect it to a Dell Compellent Fibre Channel Host contain a 500GB Volume. The Oracle server itself contains two Brocade 815 FC HBAs. I've discovered their WWN(I think) via cat /sys/class/fc_host/host1/port_name 0x100000051efc3d85 cat /sys/class/fc_host/host2/port_name 0x100000051efc3d9f The next part is where I am at a loss. I've used iSCSI before...is FC the same deal where you have an initiator and a target? If so where do I specific that in linux? I'm also new to Fiber Channel as a protocol, so i am unsure what is needed to make a transaction? WWN and port ID? Similar to IP:Port combination in the Ethernet world. I've read alot regarding using systool, multipath, fc_transport commands, however none of these is recognized as a valid command from Oracle Server 6.3 Appreciate the guidance and assistance. I installed sccsi-target-utils and can now run rescan-scsi-bus and sg_map -x. rescan-scsi-bus.sh -l -w -r Host adapter 0 (megaraid_sas) found. Host adapter 1 ((null)) found. • App or apps like NetLimiter Monitor for Linux

    - by Nathaniel
I find NetLimiter Monitor quite handy on Windows both for the realtime per-process bandwidth monitoring and the recorded data usage. What tool or tools can I use to replicate this functionality in Linux? I am okay using two separate apps for the bandwidth and the usage monitoring, but the usage monitoring is a must have.

  • How to change the sender of admin mails on a Linux server

    - by Cédric Girard
Hi, I am sure it is a dumb question, but I want to change the sender of mails sended by my Linux server (centos 5). All mails sent to user "dev" are forwarded via a /home/dev/.forward file, with this sender : [email protected]. host.mydomain.fr is the hostname of this server, but it's an internal server and it does not even have a public IP. How to have a sender like [email protected]? I try to change the "official domain name" (line begining by "Dj" but it change nothing). Regards Cédric

  • Can Linux report IP conflicts?

    - by James
If a Red Hat or other Linux host has a conflict with an IP address, is there a way to have it display a warning message on the console or in a log, like Windows and MacOS do? i.e. my computer has an IP address configured (or received from a DHCP server) but finds another device on the network using the assigned address. Will it log the conflict?

  • Consolidating Windows and Linux servers

    - by Shalan
Hi, I'm looking forward to getting your thoughts on consolidating/virtualizing 3 Windows 2008 Servers and 2 Linux Debian Servers into 1 (powerful) machine. What is the most cost-effective Virtualization software available to accomplish this. VMWare looks awfully expensive!

  • Process limit for user in Linux

    - by BrainCore
This is the standard question, "How do I set a process limit for a user account in Linux to prevent fork-bombing," with an additional twist. The running program originates as a root-owned Python process, which then setuids/setgids itself as a regular user. As far as I know, at this point, any limits set in /etc/security/limits.conf do not apply; the setuid-ed process may now fork bomb. Any ideas how to prevent this?

  • Linux Teamviewer functionality, but for ssh only

    - by Icapan
I need to access some Linux server behind NAT (no ports forwarded), so I need to have something like "phone home" like Teamviewer has. There is no GUI, but somebody can log in through SSH and dictate a password if it is changing (like Teamviewer). SSH (port 22) is enough (I can tunnel ports through SSH if I need). Any suggestions? How safe is it?

  • How to view hidden files using Linux `find` command

    - by Tom
On a Linux server, I need to find all files with a certain file extension in the current directory and all sub-directories. Previously, I have always using the following command: find . -type f | grep -i *.php However, it doesn't find hidden files, for example .myhiddenphpfile.php. The following finds the hidden php files, but not the non-hidden ones: find . -type f | grep -i \.*.php How can I find both the hidden and non-hidden php files in the same command?

  • On-demand RHEL/Centos Linux admin and MySQL admin

    - by user1322092
Could you share with me a few reputable businesses/websites where I can quickly onboard a RHEL/Centos Linux admin or even a MySQL admins (say if I need help with disaster recovery). I have a cloud server, and I would like to task an admin to perform specific maintenance or even periodic. With the abundance of solely-run cloud servers, I would imagine there's a demand for this type of service (certainly for me).

  • Using a flash drive to speed up conventional disks (on linux)

    - by Daniel
Hi! Is there a possibility to use a flash drive as a speed up for conventional hard disks? I got the idea to redirect all read ops to the flash drive if the data is already stored there, and to read from the conventional disks if the data is not found there (and during idle time the freshly accessed data from the conventional disk is stored on the flash disk). Is this already possible with linux standard tools?
