  • How to set a theme for Windows XP to use before a use logs in?

    If Windows XP "welcome screen" is disabled (manually or by joining a domain) an ordinary window is used to log-in (like it was in Windows 2000). This window is styled with default Windows XP "Luna" theme (blue window title, etc). All theme customizations (including turning them off at all to use plain Win2000/98 window style) are normally applied after a user logs-in. How can I alter this? I'd like either to turn off visual styles at all or to apply "Zune" styling to BEFORE a user logs in (and it'd be good to use the same settings as default for new users created).

  • 64 bit Windows 7 + 32 bit windows XP dual boot?

    I have purchased an i7 based PC pre-installed with 64 bit windows 7 (home premium). Unfortunately some third party 32 bit software that I need to use is not working properly (see stackoverflow.com for details). I am now torn between the plan of installing windows XP 32 bit or making it dual boot. Which option do you think will give me the least problems? And if the answer is dual boot, then can you point me to a good guide for how to do it, preferably a guide specifically for my two OS's created in this order (i.e. 7x64 first). EDIT: the performance of my 32bit programs is critical so am concerned about any kind of 32bit XP "emulation".

  • Can't install .NET framework 4.0 on Windows XP professional version 2002 SP3 (OS bug?)

    .NET framework 4.0 install fails on Windows XP professional version 2002 SP3: I tried to run setup using "run as..." to make sure the admin rights are used ("protect my computer..." tick was deselected of course). I tried everything: installing using online/offline setup, windows update. install goes a little and then "rolls back" and says: Installation did not succeed .NET Framework 4 has not been installed because: Fatal error during installation. for more information about this problem, see the log file. the full log: http://pastebay.net/1433771 Any ideas? EDIT1: I have found this in the log: "BlockIf: You must install the 32-bit Windows Imaging Component (WIC) before you run Setup. Please visit the Microsoft Download Center to install WIC, and then rerun Setup...." So I found it, and launched "wic_x86_enu.exe" - but it said: WIC Setup error Newer version of update is already on the system. I have already installed: .NET framewrok 2.0 SP2 .NET framewrok 3.0 SP2 .NET framewrok 3.5 SP1 but I need 4.0 . EDIT2: another attempt and it's log. I have found something weird: when I formatted the hard drive and installed windows xp again - the .NET framework 4.0 installed ok, but when I plugged my 100Mbit internet cable - the operating system kind off "locked itself" and the bug returned - I could no longer install .NET framework 4.0 again. There was no reason for that to happen, for example I have windows server 2003 in local network, but I don't have active directory enabled on it or anything like that - the server just has some folders shared and thats all (all server's "features" are default). I had the second pc with the same problem - with XP on it too. This seems like the bug of Operating System to me. I couldn't find what was causing the problem. After many days I gave up: backuped everything, formatted HDD and installed Windows 7 professional 64bit. .NET framework 4.0 installed with no problem on it.

    File sharing on Windows XP has a 5 client limitation. Our solution uses both file sharing and SQL Express. The way I see it, we have 2 options here: -Reload the machine that they want to use as a server with Windows Server, or; -Supply them with a dedicated NAS server, and keep their server machine on Windows XP The second option is the preferred one, for reasons I'm not going to go into. I just need to confirm that the 5 client limitation applies to the file sharing only.

    I have WXP-64 running on a VM and, for testing and performance reasons, I would like to occasionally change the allocations for it. Changes might include: Number of CPU cores, Amount of RAM Add/remove network adapters. But I'm concerned that XP will demand re-activation and that I might eventually have licensing issues if I do this. So, can anyone tell me: What kind of changes trigger re-activation in XP? Is there limits or caveat with regard to re-activation? I've perused this question and the article it references, but wanted more recent and verified info. (FWIW, I'm not trying to cheat: the OS copy was purchased explicitly for the VM.)

  • Windows XP occasionally hangs for 2-3 minutes as the splash screen fades in.

    This is a bit of a rare problem, I have not been able to debug or fix it or find anyone else with the issue. I hope someone here can help me out. Once in a while, I boot up Windows XP from the first partition of the first disk (using grub, the computer dual-boots ubuntu) and it hangs as the Windows XP splash image fades in, leaving the screen with a dim image of the splash screen. After 2-3 minutes, it continues to boot as normal, no error messages or strange behavior. I have noticed that this happens about 75% of the time when the last time the computer was shut down it was from Ubuntu, and maybe 5-10% of the time otherwise. I have looked at system logs as far as I was able, and did not find anything the miss. What is causing this and how can I fix it?

    In Windows XP Alt-tab keypress sequence to select applications, how can I ensure that certain applications always appear, in a certain order, with others always excluded? Background for asking is that most XP-based machines that I am working with on a shop floor present the list of shortcuts in a certain order and certain applications. There is one machine however, that displays an additional application. This is a hindrance to the users of the machines, as the nature of their work is routine and this variation disrupts the remembered sequence, "disrupts their flow". Thoughts? Being a good superuser, I research first before asking, and I found: Applications randomly alt-tab? (especially full screen games) Restore Alt-Tab behavior so that minimizing an app once again moves it to the end? (2. looks close to the control I need, but would need more finer, preciser control over what appears in the selection). Suggestions? (Thanks in advance.)

    XP Pro - SP3. My IBM Thinkpad t60 goes into sleep, or hibernation? and I cannot wake it up, no matter what keys I press. This includes pressing Fn plus F4 ( with the half moon). The only method I've found is to do a hard reset, and this causes other problems. Is there another way? Thanks for any direction.

  • Can I create an Infrastructure access point from built-in WiFi (as opposed to Ad-Hoc) on Windows XP?

    I want to use my Windows XP laptop as an access point. What I am trying to achieve is possible under Windows 7 with a myriad of utilities, but the wireless driver stack was different before Windows 7 and those specific APIs don't exist on XP. The reason behind me wanting to do this is that I would like my Android phone to be able to connect via WiFi to a network that is only hard-wired (reverse tethering). Unfortunately, my Android device (Galaxy S Captivate) does not support ad-hoc networks without a serious amount of screwing around. Is it possible to create an "Infrastructure" network with my Dell Latitude D830's built-in WiFi - a "Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Card", which I am assuming is probably rebadged Broadcom, or is there some fundamental difference between a wireless adapter and an access point that would prevent this?

    I have a hp xw8200 workstation and would like to install Windowx XP 64 bit on it. Problem I seem to be having is when I reboot the machine and try to boot from the CD, nothing happens. Seems that the CD Drive is not being located or does not execute my cd to start the install. I already checked to verify that I can install Windows XP 64bit on my machine and also ensured I have the right bios and drivers for the install, only that the boot just does not take place.     Hi All I have a scenario whereby I require users to be able to authenticate against an ASP.NET MVC web application using either Windows authentication or Forms authentication. If the user is on the internal network they will use Windows authentication and if they are connecting externally they will use Forms authentication. I’ve seen quite a few people asking the question how do I configure an ASP.NET MVC web application for this, but I haven’t found a complete explanation.     I found this question somewhat on the topic, but is there a way [in emacs] to set a minor mode (or a list thereof) based on extension? For example, it's pretty easy to find out that major modes can be manipulated like so (setq auto-mode-alist (cons '("\\.notes$" . text-mode) auto-mode-alist)) and what I'd ideally like to be able to do is (setq auto-minor-mode-alist (cons '("\\.notes$" . auto-fill-mode) auto-minor-mode-alist)) The accept answer of the linked question mentions hooks, specifically temp-buffer-setup-hook. To use this, you have to add a function to the hook like so (add-hook 'temp-buffer-setup-hook 'my-func-to-set-minor-mode) My question is two-fold: Is there an easier way to do this, similar to major modes? If not, how would one write the function for the hook? It needs to check the file path against a regular expression. If it matches, activate the desired mode (e.g. auto-fill-mode).

  • Possible boot conflict?

    I was installing Ubuntu on a computer on which Windows XP was already installed. The computer has multiple hard drive bays, so I decided to remove the XP HDD and install Ubuntu on a blank HDD when it was the only HDD in the system. Unfortunately, if I now try to boot Ubuntu with the Windows XP drive in the second slot, nothing will boot. However, if Windows XP is in the first slot, it will boot fine. Can anybody explain why this happens? When I was checking out the BIOS to see if something was messed up, I discovered that when Ubuntu is in the first slot, the BIOS doesn't recognize any HDDs. However, if XP is in the first slot, the BIOS recognizes both drives. Any hypotheses about why this happens? Edit: Here's the setup. I have an old server with seven SCSI HDD slots. I have five identical 68 Gb SCSI drives, but I can keep only two plugged in. XP is still installed on the first drive, but I reinstalled Ubuntu on the second drive and had Grub overwrite the XP bootloader on the first drive. Now, the setup works fine, and I can use Grub to load either XP or Ubuntu. However, if I plug in another identical blank HDD in the third slot, the computer recognizes only the XP drive and doesn't boot. Grub starts to load, then gives me a "disk not found" error. Running ls from the grub rescue prompt only shows one drive with two partitions. I guess this is a BIOS problem, but I'd still like to know what triggers it. What about a blank drive could cause the BIOS to freak out?

  • Second Monitor stays black/in power save mode

    I'm using two Monitors, a Belinea o.display 1 (Recognized as a Rogen Tech Distribution Inc 20" by Ubuntu, but working fine) on the DVI-Output (connected via DVI-to-VGA-adapter) as my primary Monitor and a Dell 19" (Recognized correctly) on the HDMI-output (via HDMI-to-DVI adapter) as secondary monitor. The graphics controller is a GeForce 9500 GS. I'm running a fully updated Ubuntu 13.04 with nouveau 1:1.0.7-0ubuntu1. The problem is that the second monitor (Dell) never seems to come out of standby during boot: the screen stays black and the status led on the monitor stays orange (it's green when it's on). It is correctly recognized an the size of the desktop is set accordingly, it just stays black. Changing any setting via xrandr/arandr/etc. does nothing. The on-screen-menu of the monitor reports it to be in power save mode. When using the proprietary NVIDIA-Drivers, the second monitor works just find. But these drivers cause a lot of other problems on my system, so i would really like to avoid them. On Ubuntu 12.10 i had found a workaround: When moving the relative position of the second monitor slightly down and the up again, it would turn on and function normally: xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1680x1050 --pos 1280x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-1 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 0x88 --rotate normal sleep 2 xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --mode 1680x1050 --pos 1280x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-1 --mode 1280x1024 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal This workaround stop working after the update to 13.04, and now i'm looking for a new solution.     Laptop Specs: HP Pavilion G6-2020SE GPUs 1) ATI HD7000 Series 2) Intel Integrated OS Installed: x) Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit) i) ATI Graphics Card Drivers Installed From AMD website. Note: Graphics Card Drivers are Working Fine in 3D Mode. It runs a little Hot as it should since its a GPU. Observation) AMD Catalyst Control Centre Lets me Choose If I want to run the system in HIGH-END (ATI GPU) OR Intel Integrated (Better battery life) While I am on High End GPU Choice, Ubuntu works fine. Problem) But when I switch to Intel Mode in the AMD CCC and reboot the Machine. Ubuntu goes into 'Low Graphics Mode'. The problem is not that it goes into low graphics mode, it is completely expected since I am no longer using the ATI GPU but the integrated Intel GPU. Problem starts with the 'Selection' of the options. During that screen, I have no mouse on the screen (even tried plugging in an external USB mouse) & No Keyboard functionality. Thus I am left completely disabled to choose any option and load into Ubuntu. The Only thing I can do is switch to a terminal and enable ATI GPU through command-line and Ubuntu works Fine again. Is it a bug that there is no mouse/keyboard available to me during the startup of Ubuntu when its launched in Low-Graphics Mode? Any suggestions on how to pass through that? My palms are sweating as I write this down because the ATI GPU is really heating up my laptop. I dont want to boot into Windows or keep it around any longer than necessary. Please advise with help and directions. Sincerely, MonkeyD Edit1: The Answer by Celso has helped me switch to Intel, thus giving me sufficient battery power. Kudos to Celso. Now I can at least use my laptop for the time being without having it burn hair off my skin. I am still looking for answer to my original question of, 'why is lightdm not working properly when I switch to Intel GPU using ATI HD7000 series official drivers provided by AMD'.
