    Windows 7 64-bit, recent install, added Office 2010. When I create some boxes and open the quick-style menu, it crashes (or stops responding, in windowese, and then it sends an error report).   • Ubuntu via Wubi refuses to show up in boot menu

    I'm in this strange situation: I have 3 partitions, one for Vista (C), one for Windows 7 (D), and one 10GB partition (E). At least that's how my original OEM Vista partition sees them. The primary OS that I boot into everyday is Windows 7. The situation is that for some reason it sees the Windows 7 partition (its own) as drive C, the 10GB one as (D) and the Vista one as (E). I've successfully used the Wubi installation before on Vista, but now it simply doesn't work. Ubuntu just does not show up in the boot menu, no matter what I try to do. I'm running out of ideas. I heard it doesn't really play well with Windows 7 either. I set it to Vista compatibility mode and that didn't work, I also tried installing it from Vista itself and that didn't work either for some reason. Any ideas what I should try? If anyone is about to suggest EasyBCD, please underline the command-line instructions I'm gonna need to follow. Thanks.

  • Boot stuck at blinking cursor before GRUB - only works via BIOS boot menu

    I have a new box running Debian Squeeze. Grub is installed on /dev/sda, but when booting up I just get a blinking cursor, before the Grub menu. I can only boot to grub successfully when I choose boot options (during post) and select that specific drive! I have made sure the correct drive is set to boot first in the BIOS. So Grub works, but the system won't boot to that drive automatically? Any ideas on what could cause this?   • Gnome 3 application Icons disappeared

    I edited my main menu settings (unchecked items inside a sub menu) when it happened that the window freezed and all entries on the left side disappeared (Office, System, Settings, Games, ...). I didn't think much about it, but when I restarted my computer all application entries in my menu and my favorites (quickstart bar on the left side) where gone. When I go to activities - applications I just see the "All" entry without any items to click on. ~/.config/menu/gnome-applications.menu is an empty file and ~/.config/menu/gnome-settings.menu has the folowing content: <!DOCTYPE Menu PUBLIC '-//freedesktop//DTD Menu 1.0//EN' 'http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/menu-1.0.dtd'> <Menu> <Name>Desktop</Name> <MergeFile type="parent">/etc/xdg/menus/gnome-settings.menu</MergeFile> </Menu> I also looked into the files under /etc/xdg/menus. They look like template files without any reference to actual installed programs. I assume that due to a bug it deleted all my menu settings. Is there any way to restore at least the default menu? Or are there any other places to look for my old configuration?

    I am trying to create a ListMenu using data from an SQLite database to define the name of each MenuItem. So in a class called menu.java I have defined the array String classes [] = {}; which should hold each menu item name. In a DBAdapter class I created a function so the user can insert info to a table (This all works fine btw). public long insertContact(String name, String code, String location, String comments, int days, int start, int end, String type) { ContentValues initialValues = new ContentValues(); initialValues.put(KEY_NAME, name); initialValues.put(KEY_CODE, code); initialValues.put(KEY_LOCATION, location); initialValues.put(KEY_COMMENTS, comments); initialValues.put(KEY_DAYS, days); initialValues.put(KEY_START, start); initialValues.put(KEY_END, end); initialValues.put(KEY_TYPE, type); return db.insert(DATABASE_TABLE, null, initialValues); } It would be the Strings inserted into KEY_NAME that I need to populate that String array with. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks so much for the help guys. If I implement that function by Sam/Mango the program crashes, am I using it incorrectly or is the error due to the unknown size of the array? DBAdapter db = new DBAdapter(this); String classes [] = db.getClasses(); edit: I should mention that if I manually define the array: String classes [] = {"test1", "test2", "test3", etc}; It works fine.   • Cannot access boot menu with compaq 8510p

    I have a problem with my HP compaq 8510p laptop: when I start it, the fan starts and the power light is on, but the screen displays nothing. When I insert a bootable hard drive, it activates the hard drive light (meaning that the CD is recognized) but it stops after a few seconds. Same thing with any hard drive: the drive is recognized but does not boot. What I've tried so far: Changing the hard drive or booting with no hard drive (same problem) Plugging anoher display via VGA : no display on the other screen Inserting a windows-7 CD (same problem) Booting only on battery, with battery and power cable, only with power cable (same problem) So it looks like something is preventing the laptop from booting and displaying the boot menu. Do you have experienced something similar with a laptop ? What could be wrong ? The laptop is out of warranty. The system used to be windows-7 x64. Edit: I went to the help desk of my university. A guy took a look (he also tried to plug an external screen) and said that the computer is dead: on the HP laptops eventually the GPU card dies and so does the motherboard because they are linked. He saw this many times, and even if I can fix the problem, the laptop would crash again after a while. Do you have similar experience with HP laptops ? (mine is 4 years old) Edit 2: Believe it or not, my laptop is magically working again. I have no clue about what is going on. Now it is like starting and old car: when you turn it on you secretly hope it will actually start... With that said, I expect my laptop to break again in the near future (its an HP after all) and I will accept an answer or add my own accordingly. Edit 3: As expected, the laptop is down again. This time, sometimes when I power it up, it shuts down automatically after 3 seconds, sometimes not at all. In addition, when it does not shut down on its own, the power button does not work : the only way to shut it down is by unplugging the battery. As before, the screen is black, and only the power and battery lights are on. (the other ones: hard drive and wifi are off). I have tried to plug in another power plug, removing the battery and removing the hard drive without success. I might buy another laptop. I've brought the laptop to a repair shop. The problem is indeed that the graphic card is down. It will be replaced by a new one.

  • Every flash uploader giving bad progress values.

    The file upload script I wrote early last year for an internal website has been misbehaving oddly on a number of machines. On some machines it consistently works fine, on others it consistently misbehaves. I am having exactly the same problem with YUI Uploader, SWFUpload (2.2 and 2.5a), and Uploadify. On the misbehaving machines, the progress event (or callback as the case may be) is reporting the upload going far too quickly. It is progressing around 9 or 10MB/s, instead of the 50 or 60kb/s that is actually going on. The progress bar fills up very quickly, and then no more progress events are triggered. A few minutes later the completion event will trigger when the upload is actually done. I must emphasize that the file upload does proceed normally, even though the progress being reported is very wrong. The progress events are reporting a correct file size, but the reported amount uploaded is usually way too high, and it appears that it is always a multiple of 2^16 (65536). I'm only having this problem with Firefox 3.5 on Windows XP, all of which have various subversions of Flash 10. Has anyone heard of this happening, or have any idea what is going on? (I'm off to go file a number of bug reports, but hopefully someone here has some previous experience with this.)

    A weird problem with a dropdown menu in IE7: http://screenr.com/SNM The dropdown disappears when the mouse moves to a part that hovers above other layers.     I just installed macvim yesterday and I have been trying to install vim latex today. Now I know that these templates live here: % pwd /Users/me/.vim/ftplugin/latex-suite/templates % ls IEEEtran.tex article.tex report.tex report_two_column.tex and they are named correctly. Also I know that the :TTemplate vim command should do the same thing. When I type that I get this result: Choose a template file: (1) IEEEtran (2) article (3) report (4) report_two_column Enter number or name of file : So I am thinking that this must be a bug in MacVim. Is this a reasonable assumption? Any fixes?

If i turn off "display:table-cell;" style in Firebug and then turn it back on, it fixes that menu node. any ideas? p.s.: i don't want to mess with the menu itself, since it's a part of a DNN Forum 4.4.3. I'd rather fix the CSS to make it show correctly.

    I have tried the following code in a win32 app that shows a drop down menu on clicking a button. However, this does not work in WinCE as MENUINFO is not defined. Is there any way I can get around this?
