• F# Objects &ndash; Integration with the other .Net Languages &ndash; Part 2

  So in part one of my posting I covered the real basics of object creation. Today I will hopefully dig a little deeper… My expert F# book brings up an interesting point – properties in F# are just syntactic sugar for method calls. This makes sense… for instance assume I had the following object with the property exposed called Firstname. type Person(Firstname : string, Lastname : string) = member v.Firstname = Firstname I could extend the Firstname property with the following code and everything would be hunky dory… type Person(Firstname : string, Lastname : string) = member v.Firstname = Console.WriteLine("Side Effect") Firstname   All that this would do is each time I use the property Firstname, I would see the side effect printed to the screen saying “Side Effect”. Member methods have a very similar look & feel to properties, in fact the only difference really is that you declare that parameters are being passed in. type Person(Firstname : string, Lastname : string) = member v.FullName(middleName) = Firstname + " " + middleName + " " + Lastname   In the code above, FullName requires the parameter middleName, and if viewed from another project in C# would show as a method and not a property. Precomputation Optimizations Okay, so something that is obvious once you think of it but that poses an interesting side effect of mutable value holders is pre-computation of results. All it is, is a slight difference in code but can result in quite a huge saving in performance. Basically pre-computation means you would not need to compute a value every time a method is called – but could perform the computation at the creation of the object (I hope I have got it right). In a way I battle to differentiate this from lazy evaluation but I will show an example to explain the principle. Let me try and show an example to illustrate the principle… assume the following F# module namespace myNamespace open System module myMod = let Add val1 val2 = Console.WriteLine("Compute") val1 + val2 type MathPrecompute(val1 : int, val2 : int) = let precomputedsum = Add val1 val2 member v.Sum = precomputedsum type MathNormalCompute(val1 : int, val2 : int) = member v.Sum = Add val1 val2 Now assume you have a C# console app that makes use of the objects with code similar to the following… using System; using myNamespace; namespace CSharpTest { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Constructing Objects"); var myObj1 = new myMod.MathNormalCompute(10, 11); var myObj2 = new myMod.MathPrecompute(10, 11); Console.WriteLine(""); Console.WriteLine("Normal Compute Sum..."); Console.WriteLine(myObj1.Sum); Console.WriteLine(myObj1.Sum); Console.WriteLine(myObj1.Sum); Console.WriteLine(""); Console.WriteLine("Pre Compute Sum..."); Console.WriteLine(myObj2.Sum); Console.WriteLine(myObj2.Sum); Console.WriteLine(myObj2.Sum); Console.ReadKey(); } } } The output when running the console application would be as follows…. You will notice with the normal compute object that the system would call the Add function every time the method was called. With the Precompute object it only called the compute method when the object was created. Subtle, but something that could lead to major performance benefits. So… this post has gone off in a slight tangent but still related to F# objects.

It ususally shows 49.5-50.5 degrees centigrade. But I used "OpenHardwareMonitor" that report CPU temperature over 71 degree centigrade and changing fractions along with time fractions. is there anything I am missing in the code? I used the above code in timer_click event for every 500ms interval to refresh the temperature reading but it's always showing the same temperature from the beginning of execution. That implies if you run this application and if it shows 49 degree then after 1 hour session, it'll constantly show 49 degree. Where is the problem? please help. Thanks in advance.

  I am considering of using the OrderedDictionary. As a key I want to use a long value (id) and the value will be a custom object. I use the OrderedDictionary because I want to get an object by it's Id and I want to get an object by it's 'collection' index. I want to use the OrderedDictionary like this: public void AddObject(MyObject obj) { _dict.Add(obj.Id, obj); // dict is declared as OrderedDictionary _dict = new OrderedDictionary(); } Somewhere else in my code I have something similar like this: public MyObject GetNextObject() { /* In my code keep track of the current index */ _currentIndex++; // check _currentindex doesn't exceed the _questions bounds return _dict[_currentIndex] as MyObject; } Now my question is. In the last method I've used an index. Imagine _currentIndex is set to 10, but I have also an object with an id of 10. I've set the Id as a key. The Id of MyObject is of type long?. Does this goes wrong?

  I'm following a tutorial for creating an animation using Xcode Version 4.5.2 in Mountain Lion 10.8.2. When trying to build the code below, I get a Parse Error Unexpected '@' in program showing up for the 'hopAnimation=' line.   Hi experts, I'm having problem with jqGrid delete mechanism as it only send "oper" and "id" parameters in form of POST data (id is the primary key of the table). The problem is, I need to delete a row based on the id and another column value, let's say user_id. How to add this user_id to the POST data??? I can summarize the issue as the following: How to get the cell value (user_id) of the selected row? AND, how to add that user_id to the POST data so it can be retrieved from the code behind where the actual delete process takes place. The assembly should act as a wcf client and connect to a wcf service host (inside a windows service) on the same machine using named pipes. The wcf service host works fine with other clients, so the problem must be within this assembly. In order to get things work I added a service reference to the ComVisible assembly and proxy classes and the corresponding app.config settings were generated for me. Everything fine so far except that the app config would not be recognized when doing an CreateObject with my assembly in the asp code.   Hello, all, I am creating a JQGrid from a database table that does not contain a single field primary key. Therefore, the field i am supplying as id is not unique and the same one exists in several rows. Because of this, when passing a reference to the data with ondblClickRow to a function external to the grid i need to use the rownumber and not the id. To test, I'm using ondblClickRow: function(id){alert($("#grid1").getInd('rowid'));}, , and i should be getting and alert with the row number, except that it isn't working. I've been over the documentation and can't understand what i am doing wrong... Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Mario.   I can create an IISWebVirtualDir or IISWebVirtualDirSetting with WMI, but I've found no way to turn the virtual directory into an IIS Application. The virtual directory wants an AppFriendlyName and a Path. That's easy because they're part of the ...Setting object. But in order to turn the virtual directory into an App, you need to set AppIsolated=2 and AppRoot=[its root]. I cannot do this with WMI. I'd rather not mix ADSI and WMI, so if anyone can coach me through to amking this happen in WMI I'd be very happy. It works great if I have limited functions say 90 Operation Contract in my IService but if add one more OperationContract than I'm unable to Update the Service reference nor i'm able to add that service reference. In this article it's mentioned that by changing those config files(i.e devenv.exe.config, WcfTestClient.exe.config and SvcUtil.exe.config) it will work but even including those bindings in those config files still that error pops up saying There was an error downloading 'http://10.0.3.112/MyService/Service1.svc/mex'. The request failed with HTTP status 400: Bad Request. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'http://10.0.3.112/MyService/Service1.svc/mex'. There is an error in XML document (1, 89549). The maximum nametable character count quota (16384) has been exceeded while reading XML data. The nametable is a data structure used to store strings encountered during XML processing - long XML documents with non-repeating element names, attribute names and attribute values may trigger this quota. This quota may be increased by changing the MaxNameTableCharCount property on the XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas object used when creating the XML reader. Line 1, position 89549. If the service is defined in the current solution, try building the solution and adding the service reference again. Any idea how to solve this????

• TeamCity stopped working once I added NUnit to the mix

  I'm struggling a lot trying to get our build server going. I am currently running tests in a Windows XP virtual machine, and have installed TeamCity v5.0.3, build 10821. I am using NUnit v2.5.3. I finished the initial setup with TeamCity without any issues at all, provided that I use the sln2008 build runner that makes the entire process almost brainless. It's really quite nice that way, and very satisfying to see your first successful automated build. Now it's time to kick it up a notch and I wanted to get NUnit working. I keep the NUnit 2.5.3 assemblies in an external libs folder in SVN, so I checked that out onto the test system. I selected NUnit 2.5.3 from the build runner options, as the online instructions had recommended. But when I build, I get the following error: Window1.xaml.cs(14,7): error CS0246: The type or namespace name ‘NUnit’ could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Window1.xaml.cs(28,10): error CS0246: The type or namespace name ‘Test’ could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Window1.xaml.cs(28,10): error CS0246: The type or namespace name ‘TestAttribute’ could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Everything compiles great in the IDE. From finding blog posts and submitting comments, I got some advice and confirmed the following: I have the HintPath value set properly in my project file (points to the external lib) I can also do a full Release and Debug build from the command line using msbuild I have tried do use the NUnit installer so nunit.framework.dll gets registered into the GAC I have changed the build agent's logon account to be a user on the test system, rather than LOCAL SYSTEM. Nothing seems to help... can anyone else here offer me some advice on what to try next?

  I have the below code that does not seem to work at all :( I keep getting: Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object expected The error seems to occur when the timeout is done. So if I raise the timeout with 10 seconds the error holds for another 10 seconds. I want to be able to update the number of friends online async. The number is shown with the following html: <a href="" id="showChat" >Friends online <strong id="friendsOnline">(?)</strong></a> The friends part is set at the first run, but when the timeout calls back it does not fire again. Also, I cannot see on which line the error occurs because if I want to break on the error it just shows "no source code" etc. The code below is the code I'm using. • OpenCV Video capture and fps problem

  Hi to all, I'm capturing video from my webcam using OpenCV on MacOSX. It works fine but when I try to play on QuickTime my captured video it plays too fast. i.e. I capture from camera for 10 seconds but when I play on QuickTime the video is 2 seconds. I've tried to change fps from 25 to 10 and It's works quite fine, but I'm sure it's not the correct process: CvVideoWriter *writer = 0; int isColor = 1; int fps = 25; int frameW = 640; // 744 for firewire cameras int frameH = 480; // 480 for firewire cameras The problem is that for now I've to capture with WebCam but the real pourpose of program is to capture image from any external source connected to my Mac. • How can I put multiple markers on Google maps with Javascript API v3?

  Hi, I'd like to know how to put multiple markers for Google Maps using Javascript API v3. • NHibernate Query across multiple tables

  I am using NHibernate, and am trying to figure out how to write a query, that searchs all the names of my entities, and lists the results. As a simple example, I have the following objects; public class Cat { public string name {get; set;} } public class Dog { public string name {get; set;} } public class Owner { public string firstname {get; set;} public string lastname {get; set;} } Eventaully I want to create a query , say for example, which and returns all the pet owners with an name containing "ted", OR pets with a name containing "ted". Here is an example of the SQL I want to execute: SELECT TOP 10 d.*, c.*, o.* FROM owners AS o INNER JOIN dogs AS d ON o.id = d.ownerId INNER JOIN cats AS c ON o.id = c.ownerId WHERE o.lastname like '%ted%' OR o.firstname like '%ted%' OR c.name like '%ted%' OR d.name like '%ted%' When I do it using Criteria like this: var criteria = session.CreateCriteria<Owner>() .Add( Restrictions.Disjunction() .Add(Restrictions.Like("FirstName", keyword, MatchMode.Anywhere)) .Add(Restrictions.Like("LastName", keyword, MatchMode.Anywhere)) ) .CreateCriteria("Dog").Add(Restrictions.Like("Name", keyword, MatchMode.Anywhere)) .CreateCriteria("Cat").Add(Restrictions.Like("Name", keyword, MatchMode.Anywhere)); return criteria.List<Owner>(); The following query is generated: SELECT TOP 10 d.*, c.*, o.* FROM owners AS o INNER JOIN dogs AS d ON o.id = d.ownerId INNER JOIN cats AS c ON o.id = c.ownerId WHERE o.lastname like '%ted%' OR o.firstname like '%ted%' AND d.name like '%ted%' AND c.name like '%ted%' How can I adjust my query so that the .CreateCriteria("Dog") and .CreateCriteria("Cat") generate an OR instead of the AND? thanks for your help.

• Android MediaPlayer ignores it's internal volume when the system volume changes

  Hi, here is my situation: I have a media player playing music in an Android application. I've found that with certain headphones, the volume is much too loud even when the volume is set to it's lowest setting. As a result, I want to change the volume of the music for all volume levels to be 10% of what it normally is (actually, this value is user-defined of course). The following works perfectly: mediaPlayer.setVolume(0.1f, 0.1f); The volume of the music is now at a good level for listening. However, if the user now changes the volume using the volume rocker (thus changing the music stream volume), the media player changes the volume as expected, but it also seems to reset the 'setVolume' parameters to 1.0, causing a massive volume change. Setting the volume back to 0.1 sets the volume to how it should be (which is 10% of the current music stream volume). To quote the Android docs for the MediaPlayer.setVolume method: This API is recommended for balancing the output of audio streams within an application How can you do this if it gets reset to 1.0 each time the system volume changes? Any help muchly appreciated. Thanks.
