• Core Data: Detecting the type and casting it

  I have set up a Core Data model that includes an entity, Item with a 1-M relationship with the abstract entity Place, so that an item has many places. There are several entities with the parent set to Place. I want to set up several UI elements depending on the descendent place types. I have a loop that looks something like this: for (Place *place in item.places) { } ... but I'm not sure how to detect what type the place is, and how to cast it to the proper type so that I can access its properties.   Is there an easy way to make Struts 2 action names case insensitive? Currently I have the following action defined: <action name="printTest" class="MyClass" > <result name="error">/WEB-INF/jsp/error.jsp</result> <result name="input">/WEB-INF/jsp/test.jsp</result> <result name="success">/WEB-INF/jsp/test.jsp</result> </action> If the user types URL "/app/printtest.do" instead of "/app/printtest.do" this action is not executed. Other then mod_rewrite on the httpd level or something like that, the only option that I know about right now is simply adding the same exact action and changing the name to "printtest". Ideally it would be a simple config change to struts.xml

• Spring MVC managing multiple views with single controller

  I am trying to implement order management module. There are different order types (approximately about 15). Each order has a seperate view. But the actions performed on UI are same irrespective of order type. Below is the structure of my DTO abstract class Order abstract class SecurityOrder extends Order abstract class TermDepositOrder extends Order ..... ..... ..... I am trying to implement a single controller capable of managing all views. Something similar to the one below: @Controller public class OrderController<F extends Order> { public F validate(F order) { } public F insert(F order) { } } I am not sure how spring mvc would be able to map request parameters properly to the order instance as it doesn't know which order instance to populate. Is it possible to achieve this with single controller or should I go with a controller for each order type and duplicate same code across all controllers?

• Assigning a pointer variable to a const int in C++?

  I'm wondering if anyone can explain the following to me: If I write int i = 0; float* pf = i; I get a compile error (gcc 4.2.1): error: invalid conversion from ‘int’ to ‘float*’ Makes sense - they are obviously two completely different types. But if instead I write const int i = 0; float* pf = i; It compiles without error. Why should the 'const' make a difference on the right hand side of the assignment? Isn't part of the idea of the 'const' keyword to be able to enforce type constraints for constant values? Any explanation I have been able to come up with feels kind of bogus. And none of my explanations also explain the fact that const int i = 1; float* pf = i; fails to compile. Can anyone offer an explanation?

• Passing parameters among views in a navigation frame INSIDE a custom control

  I created a silverlight 3 application with a navigation frame and 3 views: search, add and edit. I used the app file to pass parameters among the 3 pages, eg: ((App)Application.Current).SNIPSELECTED = currentSnip; Then in the receiving page: currentSnip = ((App)Application.Current).SNIPSELECTED; currentSnip is a SnipItem object: public class SnipItem { public string itemID {get;set;} public string category {get;set;} public string itemDescription {get;set;} public string codeSnip {get;set;} } This worked fine until I decided to make this entire application into a user control and put that inside a second silverlight application with its own navigation frame and app file. The app files are getting confused. The first app file with all my parameter passing is not being read. I know how to pass a simple parameter between views in the first application without the app file (in a query string), but how about these custom types like my currentSnip above?

• Any way to not break on certain errors in Visual Studio 2010?

  I'm working on a VS2010 project where I'm using DataAnnotations on my objects to handle validation. However, this is sort of a pain in the butt while trying to do interactive debugging because it keeps pausing VS.Net on validation errors. Obviously, I want to break on some errors, but not these particular types. Am I out of luck and I just need to turn on and off my Break on All Errors setting? Or is there some way to tell VS to just ignore these when they happen? (these are errors generated via Validator.ValidateProperty calls.) Thanks

• How can you get the average of the count of records in Reporting Services

  I have a report where I'm counting the number of records for a day. At the bottom, I have the total records for that time period. I'd like to display the average records for each day. An example: Day Tests 1/1/2010 5 1/2/2010 10 1/3/2010 8 Average 7.7 Total 23 I can accomplish this by aggregating the data by date in SQL then just doing the Average and Sum of the count from SQL, but that would complicate the report considerably as I'm doing other column filters for the types of tests performed. There seems to be a simple way to accomplish this that I'm missing. I can't do Average(Count(field)) in SSRS, unfortunately. Is there something I'm missing, or is there really not a way to accomplish this simply?

  hi I have a page that has two dropdownlists(one for the locations, and the other for departments), an employee search textbox and a button. On the other page, I have a gridview. Now, what i want to archieve is that when a user types an employee's name in the textbox control, selects a location from the location dropdownlist, and a department from the departments dropdownlist, and click the button(search), the gridview on the other page must show the reqiured information of a SINGLE employee. Only one row must show. I have created a database for the employees. I know how to do this with the autopostback but i have not tried it using a button's click. NB: the gridview should show only one row of a selected employee. I'm using ASP.NET VB Your help will high apprecaited.

Is this correct? or should I just throw an exception if the key does not exist? how should i throw an exception for this situation?

• What is the best instance type to use for hosting a website on ec2?

  Amazon offers two instance types on EC2: 1) On-Demand and 2) Reserved. After reading the docs on these, I don't really understand the difference from an end-user perspective. More specifically, I'd like to know the answer to this question: is one or the other better for web applications? Based on their names and descriptions, it seems as though on-demand instances may get wiped away from the server altogether if they're not in use which means that they need to be restarted when a request finally does come in. That seems like a pretty bad thing for a website. Am I just misinterpreting the docs? Thanks!

• How can I duplicate, or copy a Core Data Managed Object?

  I have a managed object ("A") that contains various attributes and types of relationships, and its relationships also have their own attributes & relationships. What I would like to do is to "copy" or "duplicate" the entire object graph rooted at object "A", and thus creating a new object "B" that is very similar to "A". To be more specific, none of the relationships contained by "B" (or its children) should point to objects related to "A". There should be an entirely new object graph with similar relationships intact, and all objects having the same attributes, but of course different id's. There is the obvious manual way to do this, but I was hoping to learn of a simpler means of doing so which was not totally apparent from the Core Data documentation. TIA!

• Should I share UI for objects that use common fields?

  I have a parent class that holds all of the fields that are common between all device types. From that, I have a few derived classes that each hold their unique fields. Say I have device type "Switch" and "Transformer". Both derived classes only have 2-3 of their own unique fields. When doing the UI design (windows forms) in this case. Should I create two separate forms for each device type or create a user control with all fields that are shared among all devices? Thank you.

  I need an easy way to show different document-types (.doc, .xls, .jpg...) in webpages. Ideally a user prints or saves that document and that document is automatically converted to Adobe-Flash. I know there are existing solutions to this. However, I would like to implement them in my own application, written in C#.   Hi. I subscribe to usb inserted event like this select * FROM __INSTANCECREATIONEVENT WITHIN 3 WHERE TARGETINSTANCE ISA Win32_DiskDrive After inserting usb flash it blinks every 3 seconds. This is polling interval and intrinsic events work by polling object that's in query. Now, we know these types of events may be resource expensive. (Putting value greater then 3 sometimes chokes these events and client program doesn't get notified). Are there other ways to do that, so that usb doesn't get scanned all the time? May be there some extrinsic events available? Right now the only solution I see is to unsubscribe from event above once it trigerred and resubscribe to it in __INSTANCEDELETIONEVENT handler. • What are the disadvantages of using a StringBuilder?

  I know that StringBuilder is more efficient than a normal string when processing code which modifies the string value a lot because although strings act like value types, they are actually reference, which makes them immutable so every time we change it, we need to create a new reference in memory. My question is that, why doesn't .NET just use stringBuilder by default? There must be some disadvantages of it over just using String. Can anyone tell me what they are? The only thing I can think of is perhaps it is a heavier object and it takes more time to instantiate so if you aren't changing the string too much, this would override the benefits of StringBuilder

• Creating Slugs from Titles?

  I have everything in place to create slugs from titles, but there is one issue. My RegEx replaces spaces with hyphens. But when a user types "Hi     there" (multiple spaces) the slug ends up as "Hi-----there". When really it should be "Hi-there". Should I create the regular expression so that it only replaces a space when there is a character either side? Or is there an easier way to do this?

  In this text: warning here there are several types of warnings in this string warning.gif at the end warning end of line warning I want to match every warning except warning.gif. I cannot seem to get it to include the last one that has no character (control or otherwise) after it. using warnings?[^\.] gets what I want except for the last warning (on the last line). I think because there is no character at all after. How can I get it to include that one?

Using 'i' as the array index results in a non-constant expression. I don't understand how the compiler can evaluate the expression at compile time. Why isn't this flagged as an error?
