• With the advent of HTML 5, is there a point in using COMET anymore?

  I am very tempted to use long wait http or periodic polling by the client to set up pseudo-sockets on the browser side, for an application that would be used publicly. But then on the 2nd thought, I am thinking HTML 5 is here. But on the 3rd thought, what is the percentage of browsers out there that remain non-HTML5 within 12 months, 24 months, 36 months? If there are at least 20% of browsers still incapable of HTML5, then I cannot depend on HTML5 because 20% of users not being able to access an application is a significant amount. What do you think, how would your advice be (to me and to developers in general)? Q1. Is there any point in rigging in COMET into an application anymore? I am thinking of gwt comet - http://code.google.com/p/gwt-comet/. Q2. Should we release a new public application within the next 2 months that is dependent on HTML5 sockets and tell non-HTML5 browser users "sorry, your browser version cannot access this application"? Or should we architect the apps to use communication like GWT RPC? Q3. I am also very distrustful of long wait http request. I have never used it before but I have a horrible feeling about it. I have been using 10 to 20 second client-side polling. Is long wait http request risky (risk of hanging a browser session)? Does long wait request present any additional security risk?

• Why doesn't Default route work using Html.ActionLink in this case?

  I have a rather perculiar issue with routing. Coming back to routing after not having to worry about configuration for it for a year, I am using the default route and ignore route for resources: routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional }); I have a RulesController with an action for Index and Lorem and a Index.aspx, Lorem.aspx in Views Rules directory. I have an ActionLink aimed at Rules/Index on the maseter page: <li><div><%: Html.ActionLink("linkText", "Index", "Rules")%></div></li> The link is being rendered as http://localhost:12345/Rules/ and am getting a 404. When I type Index into the URL the application routes it to the action. When I change the default route action from "Index" to "Lorem", the action link is being rendered as http://localhost:12345/Rules/Index adding the Index as it's no longer on the default route and the application routes to the Index action correctly. I have used Phil Haack's Routing Debugger, but entering the url http://localhost:12345/Rules/ is causing a 404 using that too. I think I've covered all of the rookie mistakes, relevant SO questions and basic RTFMs. I'm assuming that "Rules" isn't any sort of reserved word in routing. Other than updating the Routes and debuugging them, what can I look at?

• IIS 6 ASP.NET default handler-mappings and virtual directories

  I'm having a problem with setting a default mapping in IIS 6. I want to secure *.HTML files with ASP.NET forms authentication. The problem seems to have something to do with using virtual directories to hold the html files. Here's how it's setup: sample directory tree c:/inetpub/ (nothing in here) d:/web_files/my_web_apps d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app1/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app2/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/ app1 and app2 both access the same html_files directory, so html_files is set as a virtual directory in the web apps in IIS... sample web directory tree //app1/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) //app2/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) If I put a file called test.html in the root of //app1/ and then add the default mapping to the asp.net dll and setup my security on the root folder with deny="?", then accessing test.html works exactly as expected. If I'm not authenticated, it takes me to the login.aspx page, and if I am authenticated then it displays test.html. If I put the test.html file in the html_files directory I get a totally different behavior. Now the login.aspx page loads and I stuck some code in to check if I was still authenticated: <p>autheticated: <%=User.Identity.IsAuthenticated%></p> I figured it would say false because why else would it bother to load the login page? Nope, it says true - so it knows i'm authenticated, but it won't give me access to the test.html file. I've spent several hours on this and haven't been able to solve it. I'm going to spend some more time on google to see if I've missed something. Fingers crossed.

• jQuery click event on image only fires once

  I created a view of thumbnails. When the user clicks, I want the real image to pop-up in a dialog. That works the first time, but once the jQuery 'click' fires on an thumbnail it never fires again unless I reload the entire page. I've tried rebinding the click events on the dialog close that that does not help.   I'm iterating through a collection on my view model. The collection contains HealthLifeDentalRates which implement IBeginsEnds. I have a Display Template BeginsEnds that displays the date range. This results in very slow performance. If I simply the date range (see commented code), it's fine.   I've got a Linode configured as a Ubuntu 10.04.2 web server with Apache 2.2.14. I have a total of 4 sites, all defined under /etc/apache2/sites-available as virtual hosts. All sites are almost identical clones for configuration. And all sites but my last work successfully. default: (www.)exampleadnetwork.com (www.)example.com reseller.example.com trouble: client1.example.com I keep getting this page when I visit the client1.example.com site: It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet. In my ports.conf file I have the NameVirtualHost correctly set to my IP address on port 80. If I access the "www.sub.example.com" alias the site works! If I access it without the www I see the "It Works" excerpt posted above. Even apache2ctl -S shows that my vhost file parses correctly and is added to the mix.   I am having difficulties with forms, specifically ModelMultipleChoiceField. I've pieced together this code from various examples, but it sadly doesn't work. I would like to be able to: Search for some Works on work_search.html Display the results of the search, with checkboxes next to each result Select the Works I want, via the checkboxes After pressing Add, display which works were selected.   hello all, i am new to the filestream option in sql server 2008, but i have already understand how to open this option and how to create a table that allow you to save files. let say my table contains: id,name, filecontent i tried to insert an html file (that has hebrew chars/text in it) to this table. i'm writing in asp.net (c#), using visual studio 2008. but when i tried to read back the content , hebrew char becomes '?'. the actions i took were: 1. i read the file like this: // open the stream reader System.IO.StreamReader aFile = new StreamReader(FileName, System.Text.UTF8Encoding.UTF8); // reads the file to the end stream = aFile.ReadToEnd(); // closes the file aFile.Close(); return stream; // returns the stream i inserted the 'stream' to the filecontent column as binary data. i tried to do a 'select' to this column and the data did return (after i coverted it back to string) but hebrew chars become '?' how do i solve this problem ? what I should pay attention to ? thanks, gadym

I want to process this list in the following way: filenames of type /dirX/subdirX//.ext will be written in a new file all the other filenames will be written in a separate file. Is there any option to verify if a filename corresponds to a mask, without reading the file name from disk?(by filename I mean a simple string). I would like to know if there is such a function that don't require disk access. I know regex could be an workaround but I'd like to have something from php.
