  Today I investigated one strange error working with Dynamic SMTP Port.   Event Type: Error Event Source: BizTalk Server 2006 Event Category: BizTalk Server 2006 Event ID: 5754 Date: ******** Time: ********AM User: N/A Computer: ******** Description: A message sent to adapter "SMTP" on send port "*********" with URI "mailto:********.com" is suspended. Error details: Unknown Error Description  MessageId:  {********} InstanceID: {********}   My code was pretty simple and the source of the error was hidden somewhere inside it.   msg_MyMessage(SMTP.CC) = var_CC; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.From) = var_From; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.Subject) = var_Subject; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.EmailBodyText) = var_Message;    // #1    msg_MyMessage(SMTP.SMTPHost) = " localhost "; msg_MyMessage(SMTP.SMTPAuthenticate) = 0; When I added line #2, this frustrating error disappeared.    msg_MyMessage(SMTP.EmailBodyTextCharset) = "UTF-8"; // #2 Conclusion: If we use the SMTP.EmailBodyText property, we must set up the SMTP.EmailBodyTextCharset property. To me it looks like a bug in BizTalk. [Maybe it is "by design", but in this case give us a useful error text!!!] And don't ask me how much time I've spent with this investigation.

This university actually takes the courses from the Open University in the UK (through a partnership). (Note: some of the courses in the list are different from what I took due to replacement/updating for materials) .......... I am interested in programming in general. It is the same question but in different ways: What is the master degree that is related to a programmer? Generally for someone like me, what is the required/suggested Master degree? • Web deploy (msdeploy), syncing everything but sites and pools (but include siteDefaults)

  Today I do the following to sync two webservers but skip all site configuration: msdeploy -verb:sync -source:webServer -dest:webServer,computerName=web25:8080 -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/sites -skip:objectName=section,absolutePath=system.applicationHost/applicationPools However, this effectively also skip the siteDefaults, which I do like to sync (system.applicationHost/sites/siteDefaults) There doesn't seem to be a way to "include" a section, to override the skip directive. And there doesn't seem to be a way to sync only the siteDefaults section from applicationHost either, since source appHostConfig only seem to sync a specified site, and not siteDefaults. Maybe it is possible to "skip" using an Xpath expression or similar, to only skip the nodes, but include , but I find the documentation a bit confusing and my Xpath is rusty.

• cannot rename files when saving

  I am using xubuntu 13.10. Since the last update, when I am saving files I cannot rename other files, there are missing buttons in context menu like rename, cut, copy, etc... let`s say I edited the file named style.css in firefox, and I want to save it, but i do not want to overwrite the original, I want to rename the original for ex: style_orig.css and save the edited file with the name style.css. for doing that I must open thunar, navigate to that file, and rename it, after that, I can save the file from firefox. let`s reformulate this question: if I want to overwrite a file, but preserve the original, then I must make a copy of the original. Well, I can not do this when saving the file from the application, I must open thunar and navigate to that file which is an additional task I have to do. It`s a waste of time.

• Can't (re)Install VLC (removed by update{again})

  I use VLC a lot, And When 2.0 came out Ubuntu did not update to that version, the REPO had the older version even months later, So I added the daily repo: http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu and that worked for a while, after a few months later I received a 'Distribution upgrade' and when I installed it, it removed VLC. when I tried to re-install it gave me a bunch of unmet dependency's, so I disabled the source, ran apt-get update, and tried to install the older VLC, that did not work either. • External routing for local interfaces in a virtualized network

  Current setup: br0| |-- tun10 -pipe-tun0(192.240.240.1) |-- tun11 -pipe-tun1(192.240.240.2) |-- tun12 -pipe-tun2(192.240.240.3) The pipe program is a custom program that forwards data back2back between two tun interfaces. The idea is puting 2 programs in .2 and .3 while keeping .1 as the local interface in the current machine. The main problem is that I want to route packets to .2 and to .3 through .1 and br0, but as they are local interfaces, the kernel ignores any routing instruction, it just delivers the packet to the proper interface. Tried iptables, but the nat table doesn't even see ping packets to those ifaces. A "ping 192.240.240.2" delivers a icmp packet with source and dest .2 to tun1, ideally it should deliver a source .1 dest .2 at tun1 through tun0-br0-tun1 Any hint? • PostSharp deployment to build machine- use Setup installation, not NuGet package.

  PostSharp has well documented different methods of installation. I've chosen installing NuGet packages, because according to  Deploying PostSharp into a Source Repository NuGet is the easiest way to add PostSharp to a project without installing the product on every machine. However it didn't work well for me. I've added PostSharp NuGet package to one project in the solution.  When I wanted to use PostSharp in other project, Visual Studio tab showed that PostSharp is not enabled for this project I've added the NuGet package to the new project, which installed a new version of the package in the new Packages subfolder. When I wanted to refer PostSharp from the third project, I've ended up with another version of PostSharp installed. Additionally multiple versions of Diagnostics were created. It definitely causes confusion and errors.   More problems we experienced on build server. According to Using PostSharp on a Build Server "If you chose to deploy PostSharp in the source repository, it does not need to be installed specifically on the build server. " It didn't work on our build server. I kept getting errors "The "AddIns" parameter is not supported by the "PostSharp21" task." and "The "DisableSystemBindingPolicies" parameter is not supported by the "PostSharp21" task."   From my experience the only way to have the latest version of PostSharp working on the build server is to install it using Setup as described in Deploying PostSharp with the Setup Program     Gael acknowledged the issues with possible version conflicts. see http://support.sharpcrafters.com/discussions/problems/388-the-postsharp21-task-failed-unexpectedly

• What is a generic term for name/identifier? (as opposed to label)

  I need to refer to a number of things that have both an identifier value (used in code and configuration), and a human-readable label. These things include: database columns dropdown items subapplications objects stored in a dictionary I want two unambiguous terms. One to refer to the identifier/value/key. One to refer to the label. As you can see, I'm pretty settled on the latter :) For the former, identifier seems best (not everything is strictly a key, and value and name could refer to the label; although, identifier usually refers only to a variable name), but I would prefer to follow an established practice if there is one. Is there an established term for this? (Please provide a source.) If not, are there any examples of a choice from a significant source (Java APIs, MSDN, a big FLOSS project)? (I wasn't sure if this should be posted here or to English Language & Usage. I thought this was the more appropriate expert audience. Happy to migrate if not.)

  Have you ever wanted to add more than one Integration Services existing package (e.g. 20 packages) in a SSIS project? Well, you may suppose that an Open Dialog supports multiple files selection to import more than one file at a time ... BIDS Open Dialog doesn’t allow this, you can just select a single file! Hence the loss of valuable time spent to import the packages one at a time. Few days ago I learned a trick that solves the problem, thanks to this post by Matt Masson. Just copy all the packages to import from Windows Explorer (Ctrl + C): Then just right click on the SSIS Packages folder of the Integration Services project and make a simple Past (CTRL + V): So “auto-magically” you’ll have all those packages imported in your Integration Services project!! • Java stored procedures in Oracle, a good idea?

  I'm considering using a Java stored procedure as a very small shim to allow UDP communication from a PL/SQL package. Oracle does not provide a UTL_UDP to match its UTL_TCP. There is a 3rd party XUTL_UDP that uses Java, but it's closed source (meaning I can't see how it's implemented, not that I don't want to use closed source). An important distinction between PL/SQL and Java stored procedures with regards to networking: PL/SQL sockets are closed when dbms_session.reset_package is called, but Java sockets are not. So if you want to keep a socket open to avoid the tear-down/reconnect costs, you can't do it in sessions that are using reset_package (like mod_plsql or mod_owa HTTP requests). I haven't used Java stored procedures in a production capacity in Oracle before. This is a very large, heavily-used database, and this particular shim would be heavily used as well (it serves as a UDP bridge between a PL/SQL RFC 5424 syslog client and the local rsyslog daemon). Am I opening myself up for woe and horror, or are Java stored procedures stable and robust enough for usage in 10g? I'm wondering about issues with the embedded JVM, the jit, garbage collection, or other things that might impact a heavily used database.

• Remote host: can tracert, can telnet, can*not* browse: what gives?

  One of my customers of the company I work for has made a change to their Internet connection, and now we can't connect to them any more from our LAN. To help me troubleshoot this issue, the network guy on the customer's site has configured their firewall so that a HTTPS connection to their public IP address is open to any IP. I should put https://<customer's IP> in my browser and get a web page. Well, it works from any network I've tried (even from my smartphone), just not from my company's LAN. I thought it may be an issue with our firewall (though I checked its rules and it allows outbound TCP port 443 to anywhere), so I just connected a PC directly to the network connection of our provider, bypassing out firewall completely, and still it didn't work (everything else worked). So I asked for help to our Internet provider's customer service, and they asked me to do a tracert to our customer's IP. The tracert is successful, as the final hop shown in the output is the host I want to reach. So they said there's no problem. :( I also tried telnet <customer's IP> 443 and that works as well: I get a blank page with the cursor blinking (I've tried using another random port and that gives me an error message, as it should). Still, from any browser of any PC in my LAN I can't open that URL. I tried checking the network traffic with Wireshark: I see the packages going through and answers coming back, thought the packets I see passing are far less than they are if I successfully connect to another HTTPS website. See the attached screenshot: I had to blur the IPs, anyway the longer string is my PC's local IP address, the shorter one is the customer's public IP. I don't know what else to try. This is the only IP doing this... Any idea what could I try to find a solution to this issue? Thanks, let me know if you need further details. Edit: when I say "it doesn't work" I mean: the page doesn't open, the browser keeps loading for a long time and eventually shows an error saying that the page cannot be opened. I'm not in my office now so I can't paste the exact message, but it's the usual message you get when the browser reaches its timeout. When I say "it works", I mean the browser loads and shows a webpage (it's the logon page for the customers' firewall admin interface: so there's the firewall brand's logo and there are fields to enter a user id and a password). Update 13/09/2012: tried again to connect to the customer's network through our Internet connection without a firewall. This is what I did: Run a Kubuntu 12.04 live distro on a spare laptop; Updated all the packages I could and installed WireShark; Attached it to my LAN and verified that I couldn't open https://<customer's IP>. Verified that the Wireshark trace for this attempt was the same as the one I've already posted; Verified that I could connect to another customer's host using rdesktop (it worked); Tried to rdesktop to <customer's IP>, here's the output: kubuntu@kubuntu:/etc$ rdesktop <customer's IP> Autoselected keyboard map en-us ERROR: recv: Connection reset by peer Disconnected the laptop from the LAN; Disconnected the firewall from the Extranet connection, connected the laptop instead. Set its network configuration so that I could access the Internet; Verified that I could connect to other websites in http and https and in RDP to other customers' hosts - it all worked as expected; Verified that I could still traceroute to <customer's IP>: I could; Verified that I still couldn't open https://<customer's IP> (same exact result as before); Checked the WireShark trace for this attempt and noticed a different behaviour: I could see packets going out to the customer's IP, but no replies at all; Tried to run rdesktop again, with a slightly different result: kubuntu@kubuntu:/etc/network$ rdesktop <customer's IP> Autoselected keyboard map en-us ERROR: <customer's IP>: unable to connect Finally gave up, put everything back as it was before, turned off the laptop and lost the WireShark traces I had saved. :( I still remember them very well though. :) Can you get anything out of it? Thank you very much. Update 12/09/2012 n.2: I followed the suggestion by MadHatter in the comments. From inside the firewall, this is what I get: user@ubuntu-mantis:~$ openssl s_client -connect <customer's IP>:443 CONNECTED(00000003) If I now type GET / the output pauses for several seconds and then I get: write:errno=104 I'm going to try the same, but bypassing the firewall, as soon as I can. Thanks. Update 12/09/2012 n.3: So, I think ISA Server is altering the results of my tests... I tried installing Wireshark directly on the firewall and monitoring the packets on the Extranet network card. When the destination is the customer's IP, whatever service I try to connect to (HTTPS, RDP or SAProuter), I can only see outbound packets and no response packets whatsoever from their side. It looks like ISA Server is "faking" the remote server's replies, that's why I get a connection using telnet or the openSSL client. This is the wireshark trace from inside our LAN: But this is the trace on the Extranet network card: This makes a bit more sense... I'll send this info to the customer's tech and see if he can make anything out of it. Thanks to all that took the time to read my question and post suggestions. I'll update this post again.

• Implementing a multilanguage AI contest platform

  This is a followup to this question. To sum: I'm implementing an AI contest site, where each user may submit several AI implementations for different games. Think about Google AI Challenge but instead of just having a big event once a year, I would like it more on a league fashion, with all virtual players playing with each other every some close period of time. I want to support as many programming languages as possible. I've seen that contest sites (like codeforces) ask you to submit a source code and interact through stdin and stdout. The first question is: what is the best way of supporting multiple languages? As I see it, I can either ask people to upload some binary/script, and interact either through stdin/*stdout*, or sockets, or the file system; or ask people to submit source code, and wrap it with whatever is necessary for the interaction. I would like to skip the need to compile the code by myself (in the server, I mean), but I am willing to do it if its the "best" choice. I need to comunicate virtual players with each other, or even better, with some intermediary arbiter. The second question is regarding security. If I'm going to be running user code in my server, I want to ensure strict security conditions, like no file system access, no networking, etc. Otherwise it would be a safe heaven for hackers. I will be implementing the engine/arbiter in .NET. I would like to support at least C#, C++, Java and Python for the user's implementations. I'm willing to write interfaces for each of these languages to simplify the user interaction with the system. Thanks in advance.

  I have an existing installation of Apache (2.2.10 Windows x86) using mod_php and PHP 5.2.6. Can I run another site in a virtual host using FastCGI and a different version of PHP, while stilling running the main site in mod_php? • Why do programmers write applications and then make them free?

  As an entrepreneur/programmer who makes a good living from writing and selling software, I'm dumbfounded as to why developers write applications and then put them up on the Internet for free. You've found yourself in one of the most lucrative fields in the world. A business with 99% profit margin, where you have no physical product but can name your price; a business where you can ship a buggy product and the customer will still buy it. Occasionally some of our software will get a free competitor, and I think, this guy is crazy. He could be making a good living off of this but instead chose to make it free. Do you not like giant piles of money? Are you not confident that people would pay for it? Are you afraid of having to support it? It's bad for the business of programming because now customers expect to be able to find a free solution to every problem. (I see tweets like "is there any good FREE software for XYZ? or do I need to pay $20 for that".) It's also bad for customers because the free solutions eventually break (because of a new OS or what have you) and since it's free, the developer has no reason to fix it. Customers end up with free but stale software that no longer works and never gets updated. Customer cries. Developer still working day job cries in their cubical. What gives? PS: I'm not looking to start an open-source/software should be free kind of debate. I'm talking about when developers make a closed source application and make it free.

• Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

  I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously. • Complex Release Vehicle Management

  I'm looking into improving our build and release system. We are a .Net/Windows shop, and I don't see any really good tools for Windows for generating the files that are to be dropped in patch or hotfix. We are currently using TFSBuild 2010 with Windows Workflows for our continuous integration builds as well as our daily full build which includes an Installshield package for deployment. What is a good way of generating the list of files to be included in a "patch" style release, where one does not redistribute all the files, but only those necessary to accomplish the necessary changes? Are there any open source tools that work well for this, or do teams usually roll their own? I have considered using Beyond Compare but I would prefer something open source. The file "patch" creation must be 100% automatable. Which release vehicles really ought to be patch style? And which releases should replace all system files related to our application? Assume we have a very large amount of resources necessary to maintain. Is there any established material that is trusted within the industry for strategies about this? I realize it is different for "enterprise" rather than with typical websites. I am looking more for "enterprise" strategies due to our product distribution style. tl;dr Looking for info on how to ship more reliable packages?

  It is that time again.  Time to polish up you presentation skills on your favorite language or technology features.  The Chicago Code Camp is accepting proposals for presentations.  Show everyone in the Chicago area what you know and submit your own. I really enjoyed presenting last year and just had to submit a proposal for this year.  This time around my topic is Increasing Collaboration with Windows Phone 7, SharePoint 2010 and Office Open XML.  I had a much longer title but the site forced me to shorten it up.  I guess that is a good way to tell people not to get too wordy.
