• How do I configure upstart to run a script on shutdown when the process takes longer than 10secs?

  I am running ubuntu 11.10 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox) to learn more about development in linux. I am using a git repository to save my work and have written a script to bundle my work up and save it to the shared folder for use while the virtual machine is not running. I would like to automatically run this script before shutdown so that my work is always available if the vm is off (currently I have to manually run the script). • Handling timeout in network application

  How can I handle timeouts in a network application. I'm implementing a provisioning system on a Linux server, the code is huge so I'm going to put the algorithm, it works as like this Read provisioning commands from file Send it to another server using TCP Save the request in hash. Receive the response then if successful response received then remove request from hash if failed response received then retry the message The problem I'm in now is when the program didn't receive the response for a timeout reason then the request will be waiting for a response forever and won't be retried. And please note that I'll be sending hundreds of commands and I have to monitor the timeout commands for all of them. I tried to use timer but that didn't help because I'll end up with so many waiting timers and I'm not sure if this is a good way of doing this. The question is how can I save the message in some data structure and check to remove or retry it later when there is no response from the other end? Please note that I'm willing to change the algorithm to anything you suggest that could deal with the timeouts.

• .NET Declarative Security: Why is SecurityAction.Deny impossible to work with?

  I've been messing with this for about a day and a half now sifting through .NET reflector and MSDN docs, and can't figure anything out... As it stands in the .NET framework, you can demand that the current Principal belong to a role to be able to execute a method by marking a method like this: [PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Role = "CanEdit")] public void Save() { ... } I am working with an existing security model that already has a "ReadOnly" role defined, so I need to do exactly the opposite of above... block the Save() method if a user is in the "ReadOnly" role. No problem, right? just flip the SecurityAction to .Deny: [PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Deny, Role = "ReadOnly")] public void Save() { ... } Well, it turns out that this does nothing at all. The method still runs fine. It seems that the PrincipalPermissionAttribute defines: public override IPermission CreatePermission() But when the attribute is set to SecurityAction.Deny, this method is never called, so no IPermission object is ever created. Does anyone know of a way to get .Deny to work? I've been trying to make a custom secutiry attribute, but even that doesn't work. I tried to get tricky and do: public class MyPermissionAttribute : CodeAccessSecurityAttribute { private SecurityAction securityAction; public MyPermissionAttribute(SecurityAction action) : base(SecurityAction.Demand) { if (action != SecurityAction.Demand && action != SecurityAction.Deny) throw new ArgumentException("Unsupported SecurityAction. Only Demand and Deny are supported."); this.securityAction = action; } public override IPermission CreatePermission() { // do something based on the SecurityAction... } } Notice my attribute constructor always passes SecurityAction.Demand, which is the one action that would work previously. However, even in this case, the CreatePermission() method is still only called when the attribute is set to .Demand, and not .Deny! Maybe the runtime is actually checking the attribute instead of the SecurityAction passed to the CodeAccessSecurityAttribute constructor? I'm not sure what else to try here... anyone have any ideas? You wouldn't think it would be that hard to deny method access based on a role, instead of only demanding it. It really disturbed me that the default PrincipalPermission appears from within an IDE like it would be just fine doing a .Deny, and there is like a 1-liner in the MSDN docs that hint that it won't work. You would think the PrincipalPermissionAttribute constructor would throw an exception immediately if anything other that .Demand is specified, since that could create a big security hole! I never would have realized that .Deny does nothing at all if I hadn't been unit testing! Again, all this stems from having to deal with an existing security model that has a "ReadOnly" role that needs to be denied access, instead of doing it the other way around, where I cna just grant access to a role. Thanks for any help! Quick followup: I can actually make my custom attribute work by doing this: public class MyPermissionAttribute : CodeAccessSecurityAttribute { public SecurityAction SecurityAction { get; set; } public MyPermissionAttribute(SecurityAction action) : base(action) { } public override IPermission CreatePermission() { switch(this.SecurityAction) { ... } // check Demand or Deny } } And decorating the method: [MyPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, SecurityAction = SecurityAction.Deny, Role = "ReadOnly")] public void Save() { ... } But that is terribly ugly, since I'm specifying both Demand and Deny in the same attribute. But it does work... Another interesting note: My custom class extends CodeAccessSecurityAttribute, which in turn only extends SecurityAttribute. If I cnage my custom class to directly extend SecurityAttribute, then nothing at all works. So it seems the runtime is definately looking for only CodeAccessSecurityAttribute instances in the metadata, and does something funny with the SecurityAction specified, even if a custom constructor overrides it.

When persisting parent object (with one-to-many relationship with child), the foreign-key to this parent is not stored in child's table. • OpenGL texture misaligned on quad

  I've been having trouble with this for a while now, and I haven't gotten any solutions that work yet. Here is the problem, and the specifics: I am loading a 256x256 uncompressed TGA into a simple OpenGL program that draws a quad on the screen, but when it shows up, it is shifted about two pixels to the left, with the cropped part appearing on the right side. It has been baffling me for the longest time, people have suggested clamping and such, but somehow I think my problem is probably something really simple, but I just can't figure out what it is! Here is a screenshot comparing the TGA (left) and how it appears running in the program (right) for clarity. Also take note that there's a tiny black pixel on the upper right corner, I'm hoping that's related to the same problem. Here's the code for the loader, I'm convinced that my problem lies in the way that I'm loading the texture.   I need to draw thick textured line segments in OpenGL. Actually I need curves made out of short line segments. Here is what I have: In the upper left is an example of two connected line segments. The second image shows once the lines are given width, they overlap. If I apply a texture that uses translucency, the overlap looks terrible. The third image shows that both lines are shortened by half the amount necessary to make the thick line corners just touch. This way I can fill the space between the lines with a triangle. On the right you can see this works well (ignore the horizontal line when the crappy texture repeats). But it doesn't always work well. In the bottom left the curve is made of many short line segments. Note the incorrect texture application. My program is written in Java, making use of the LWJGL OpenGL binding (and minor use of Slick, a 2D helper framework). I've made a zip file that contains an executable JAR so you can easily see the problem. It also has the Java code (there is only one source file) and an Eclipse project, so you can instantly run it through Eclipse and hack at it if you like. Here she is: http://n4te.com/temp/lines.zip To run, execute "java -jar lines.jar". You may need "-Djava.library.path=." before -jar if you are not on Windows. Press space to toggle texture/wireframe. The wireframe only shows the line segments, the triangle between them isn't drawn. I don't need to draw arbitrary lines, just bezier curves similar to what you see in the program. Sorry the code is a bit messy, once I have a solution I will refactor. I have investigated using GLUtessellator. It greatly simplified construction of the line, but I found that applying the texture was perfect. It worked most of the time (top image below), but long vertical curves would have severe texture distortion (bottom image below): This turned out to be much easier to code, but in the end worse than my approach. I believe what I'm trying to do is called "line tessellation" or "stroke tessellation". I assume this has been solved already? Is there standard code I can leverage? Otherwise, how can I fix my code so that the texture does not freak out on short, vertical curves?

The problem I am running into is everything is very faint and blurry on the image printed by the zebra printer but if I print the bitmap to a laser printer it looks perfectly normal. Has anyone run into this before and if so how did they fix it? I have tried nearly everything I can think of printer settings wise.

One of my animateWithDuration blocks doesn't transition, it is a sudden change, and transitionWithView does not temporarily disable user interaction. This block moves one of the container views, but does not block the user from other interactions in ViewController while the transition is occurring. I think the problem is that I am trying to call two different animation/transition blocks at the same time.

• CSS3 Gradients to reproduce an 'inner glow' effect from Illustrator with border-radius applied

  Hello all! First post on here so please be kind :) I am in the process of trying to get my head properly around CSS3 Gradients (specifically radial ones) and in doing so I think I've set myself a relatively tough challenge. In Adobe Illustrator I have created a 'button' style which can be seen here: http://bit.ly/aePPtV (jpg image). To create this image I created a rectangle with a background colour of rgb(63,64,63) or #3F403F, then 'stylized' it to have a 15px border radius. I then applied an 'inner glow' to it with a 25% opacity, 8px blur, white from the center. Finally, I applied a 3pt white stroke on it. (I'm telling you all of this in case you wished to reproduce it, if the image above isn't sufficient.) So, my question is thus: is it possible to recreate this 'button' using CSS without the need for an image? I am aware of the 'limitations' of Internet Explorer (and for the sake of this experiment, I couldn't give a monkeys). I am also aware of the small 'bug' in webkit which incorrectly renders an element with a background colour, border-radius and a border (with a different color to the background-color) - it lets the background color bleed through on the curved corners. • jQuery doesn't work in IE8?

  Hi, I am working on a site here: mfm.treethink.net All the jquery works fine in Firefox, Chrome and Safari but on IE8 it gives me errors and the banner at the top doesn't work (which uses the crossSlide jQuery plugin) and as well the image rollovers don't work with the colour change. IE8 is telling me that the errors are on lines 53, 134 and 149 in the source, all of those lines are where the jquery function is declared. $(document).ready(function(){ I am running jquery 1.4. This is what I did from what ever I learnt.. In my view <% @hello.each do |key, value| %> <li><%=h "#{key.to_s} : #{value.to_s}" %></li> <% end %> This will get the entire thing converted to a list... It works awesome if its just one key.. but how to work with multiple keys and show only the information... something like when it outputs hometown : City, State rather than something like hometown : {"id"=>"115200305133358163", "name"=>"City, State"} Also for education if I just say education[school][name] to display list of schools attended? The error i get is can't convert String into Integer I also tried to do this in my controller, but I get the same error.. @fav_teams = @hello["favorite_teams"]["name"] Also, how can I save all these to the database.. something like just the list of all schools.. not their id no's? Update: The way I plan to save to my database is.. lets say for a user model, i want to save to database as :facebook_id, :facebook_name, :facebook_firstname, ...., :facebook_hometown .. here I only want to save name... when it comes to education.. I want to save.. school, concentration and type.. I have no idea on how to achieve this.. Looking forward for help! thanks!

If I leave dropdownlist and try to insert wrong date I get following error: System.InvalidOperationException: The ViewData item with the key 'CategoryId' is of type 'System.Int32' but needs to be of type 'IEnumerable'. If I enter correct date than the article is properly inserted. There's one other thing that's confusing me... For example, if I try manually add the categoyID: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Create(Article article) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { try { // TODO: Add insert logic here // Manually add category value article.CategoryID = 1; articleRepository.Add(article); articleRepository.Save(); return RedirectToAction("Index"); } catch { return View(article); } } else { return View(article); } } ..I also get the above error. There's one other thing I noticed. If I add partial class Article, when returning to articleRepository.cs I get error that 'Article' is an ambiguous reference between 'CMS.Models.Article' and 'CMS.Model.Article' Any thoughts on this one?

  Hi. I am new to EmguCV. I want to convert an rgb image into gray scale. For the conversion I have used the code Image grayImage = ColordImage.Convert(); Now when i compile this code in C# it gives no error,but when i run it then after a few seconds it gives me the exception at this line of code that this type of conversion is not supported by OpenCV.
