  • What does this Express Edition look like, anyhow?

    Chances are that you rarely get to see the Express Edition of SQL Server if you mainly work with servers. This blog post is inspired from a forum discussion where some functionality is missing in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and I suspected that the tools were installed as a Basic installation instead of Complete installation.   • Good way to manage blog/news? [closed]

    I really don't want to undertake handling blog/news posts within a site I'm working on and would much rather use some other software that's fairly bare-bones that will manage the posts and then I can just pull posts from the DB or an API. Does anyone have any experience with a nice, lightweight OS Blog type software that has either an API or is basic enough to simply pull Data from the database? I really only need the software for managing, I plan to display all the posts programatically through MVC.

  • BIDS Helper 1.6 Beta Release (now with SQL 2012 support!)

    The beta for BIDS Helper 1.6 was just released. We have not updated the version notification just yet as we would like to get some feedback on people's experiences with the SQL 2012 version. So if you are using SQL 2012, go grab it and let us know how you go (you can post a comment on this blog post or on the BIDS Helper site itself). This is the first release that supports SQL 2012 and consequently also the first release that runs in Visual Studio 2010. A big thanks to Greg Galloway for doing the bulk of the work on this release. Please note that if you are doing an xcopy deploy that you will need to unblock the files you download or you will get a cryptic error message. This appears to be caused by a security update to either Visual Studio or the .Net framework – the xcopy deploy instructions have been updated to show you how to do this. Below are the notes from the release page. ====== This beta release is the first to support SQL Server 2012 (in addition to SQL Server 2005, 2008, and 2008 R2). Since it is marked as a beta release, we are looking for bug reports in the next few months as you use BIDS Helper on real projects.   • What languages are the kids of today actually programming in? Does anyone have real data?

    Back in the 80s colleges were teaching Pascal because it is easy to learn, while myself and many others like me were learning BASIC because it was not only easy to learn but accessible and also fashionable (for an extremely liberal definition of fashion) It has just occurred to me that empirical data on the actual programming languages kids are choosing to use should be a good indicator of which language would be the ideal first choice for educators.   • What's with the aversion to documentation in the industry?

    There seems to be an aversion to writing even the most basic documentation. Our project READMEs are relatively bare. There aren't even updated lists of dependencies in the docs. Is there something I'm unaware of in the industry that makes programmers dislike writing documentation? I can type out paragraphs of docs if needed, so why are others so averse to it? More importantly, how do I convince them that writing docs will save us time and frustration in the future?

  • Oracle BPM and Open Data integration development

    Rapidly developing Oracle BPM application solutions with data source integration previously required significant Java and JDeveloper skills. Now using open source tools for open data development significantly reduces the coding needed.  Key tasks can be performed with visual drag and drop designing combined with menu selections entry and automatic form generation directly from XSD schema definitions. The architecture used is extremely lightweight, portable, open platform and scalable allowing integration with a variety of Oracle and non-Oracle data sources and systems. Two videos available on YouTube walk through the process at both an introductory conceptual level and then a deep dive into the programming needed using JDeveloper, Oracle BPM composer and Oracle WLS (WebLogic Server) along with the CAM editor and Open-XDX open source tools. Also available are coding samples and resources from the GitHub project page, along with working online demonstration resources on the VerifyXML site. Combining Oracle BPM with these open source tools provides a comprehensive simple and elegant solution set. Development times are slashed and rapid prototyping is enabled. Also existing data sources can be integrated using open data formats with either XML or JSON along with CRUD accessing via the Open-XDX Java component. The Open-XDX tool is a code-free approach where data mapping is configured as templates using visual drag and drop in the CAM Editor open source tool.  XML or JSON is then automatically generated or processed (output or input) and appropriate SQL statements created to support the data accessing.   Also included is the ability to integrate with fillable PDF forms via the XML templates and the Java PDF form filling library.  Again minimal Java coding is needed to associate the XML source content with the PDF named fields.  The Oracle BPM forms can be automatically generated from XSD schema definitions that are built from the data mapping templates.  This dramatically simplifies development work as all the integration artifacts needed are created by the open source editor toolset. The developer level video is designed as a tutorial with segments, hands-on demonstrations and reviews.  This allows developers to learn the techniques and approaches used in incremental steps. The intended audience ranges from data analysts to developers and assumes only entry level Java skills and knowledge.  Most actions are menu driven while Java coding is limited to simply configuring values and parameters along with performing builds and deployments from JDeveloper and Oracle WLS.   Additional existing Oracle online training resources can be referenced on Oracle BPM and WLS that cover other normal delivery aspects such as user management and application deployment.

Is that right? And what is the difference between a "basic datatype" and "built-in datatype". Wikipedia says a primitive datatype is either of the two. PS - Why is "string" type considered as a primitive type in SNOBOL4 and not in Java ?

  • How to Plug a Small Hole in NetBeans JSF (Join Table) Code Generation

    I was asked recently to provide an assist with designing and building a small-but-vital application that had at its heart some basic CRUD (Create, Read, Update, & Delete) functionality, built upon an Oracle database, to be accessible from various locations. Working from the stated requirements, I fleshed out the basic application and database designs and, once validated, set out to complete the first iteration for review. Using SQL Developer, I created the requisite tables, indices, and sequences for our first run. One of the tables was a many-to-many join table with three fields: one a primary key for that table, the other two being primary keys for the other tables, represented as foreign keys in the join table. Here is a simplified example of the trio of tables: Once the database was in decent shape, I fired up NetBeans to let it have first shot at the code. NetBeans does a great job of generating a mountain of essential code, saving developers what must be millions of hours of effort each year by building a basic foundation with a few clicks and keystrokes. Lest you think it (or any tool) can do everything for you, however, occasionally something tosses a paper clip into the delicate machinery and makes you open things up to fix them. Join tables apparently qualify.  :-) In the case above, the entity class generated for the join table (New Entity Classes from Database) included an embedded object consisting solely of the two foreign key fields as attributes, in addition to an object referencing each one of the "component" tables. The Create page generated (New JSF Pages from Entity Classes) worked well to a point, but when trying to save, we were greeted with an error: Transaction aborted. Hmm. A quick debugger session later and I'd identified the issue: when trying to persist the new join-table object, the embedded "foreign-keys-only" object still had null values for its two (required value) attributes...even though the embedded table objects had populated key attributes. Here's the simple fix: In the join-table controller class, find the public String create() method. It will look something like this:     public String create() {        try {            getFacade().create(current);            JsfUtil.addSuccessMessage(ResourceBundle.getBundle("/Bundle").getString("JoinEntityCreated"));            return prepareCreate();        } catch (Exception e) {            JsfUtil.addErrorMessage(e, ResourceBundle.getBundle("/Bundle").getString("PersistenceErrorOccured"));            return null;        }    } To restore balance to the force, modify the create() method as follows (changes in red):     public String create() {         try {            // Add the next two lines to resolve:            current.getJoinEntityPK().setTbl1id(current.getTbl1().getId().toBigInteger());            current.getJoinEntityPK().setTbl2id(current.getTbl2().getId().toBigInteger());            getFacade().create(current);            JsfUtil.addSuccessMessage(ResourceBundle.getBundle("/Bundle").getString("JoinEntityCreated"));            return prepareCreate();        } catch (Exception e) {            JsfUtil.addErrorMessage(e, ResourceBundle.getBundle("/Bundle").getString("PersistenceErrorOccured"));            return null;        }    } I'll be refactoring this code shortly, but for now, it works.
