• Remote Desktop to home server: From mac gives english keyboard layout, from pc gives norwegian layou

  I'm trying to connect to my home server from my mac, but struggle with typing the password, which contains a plus sign. I have a norwegian keyboard layout, and when I log in from windows (via wmware), I get a norwegian keyboard at the logon screen, but when I connect directly from the mac, I get a english keyboard layout, which makes it impossible to type my password... Why does it give me a different layout for the mac? How can I type a plus sign? The key that should give me a plus sign if the keyboard was english, is the key that contains the ´ and `, and using this button doesn't give me anything in the login prompt... regards, -Vegar

• Touchpad right click doesn't work on HP Envy 14 beats

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 lts 64 bits on my HP envy 14 beats. When I try to click with the right click button it doesn't work. • How To Change Attachment Size in WorkItems in TFS 2010

  Recently, I came across an issue where I had to change the size limit for WorkItem Attachments in TFS 2010. I searched all around the internet only to find very little information around it which wasn’t clear honestly. So after breaking my head for sometime, I was successful in doing it. Here are my conclusions and the procedure to do it. 1. You DON’T 'have to' programmatically change it. You can do it directly from IIS webservices. 2. You CAN change it programmatically too, by making an entry into TFS Registry using a small piece of code. Let me show you how it is done from IIS. This is to change the size of attachment to your required value for workItems in TFS 2010 for each collection individually. You must be a TFS Admin to do this ( Login with setup account ) Browse to /WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ConfigurationSettingsService.asmx">/WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ConfigurationSettingsService.asmx">/WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ConfigurationSettingsService.asmx">http://localhost:8080/tfs/<YOUR-COLLECTION-NAME>/WorkItemTracking/v1.0/ConfigurationSettingsService.asmx You’ll see 3 asmx services – GetMaxAttachmentSize, GetWorkItemTrackingVersion and SetMaxAttachmentSize. 4. To know what is the current value of the maximum attachment size for a collection, click on the first service and you’ll the current existing value for this particular collection when you click on ‘invoke’ button. ( value is in bytes ) 5. Now click on the ‘SetMaxAttachmentSize’ webservice and fill in the value of your choice. 6. Reset IIS ( not required honestly, but I did it, just to be sure ) 7. Now try attaching a file greater than the size you’ve set. It’ll fail successfully   Below is the error which you’d see in such scenarios. • Are web application usability issues equal to website usability issues?

  I've been reading two books about web usability issues and tests (Rocket Surgery Made Easy¹ and Prioritizing Web Usability²) and they claim some strategies and typical problems about website usability and how to lead them. However, I want to do a web application, and I think I lost track of what I am trying to solve. These two books claim to work with raw websites (e-commerce, business sites, even intranet), but I'm not sure if everything about web usability is applicable to web application usability. They sure talk about always having available (and usable) the Back button, to focus on short information rather than big amounts of text, etc., but they could be inaccurate in deeper problems that may be easier (or just skippable) in regular websites. Has anybody some experience in this field and could tell me if both web applications and websites share their usability issues? Thanks in advance Edit: Quoting Wikipedia, a website is a collection of related web pages containing images, videos or other digital assets, and a web application is an application that is accessed over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. To sum up, both shows/lets you search/produce information but websites are "simple" in interaction and keep the classics of websites (one-click actions) and the other one is closer to desktop applications in the meaning of their uses and ways of interaction (double click, modal windows, asynchronous calls [to keep you in the same "environment" instead of reloading it] etc.). I don't know if this clarifies the difference. Edit 2: Quoting @Victor and myself, a website is anything running in your browser, but a web application is somewhat running in your browser that could be running in your desktop, with similar behaviors and features. Gmail is a web application that could replace Outlook. GDocs could replace Office. Grooveshark could replace your music player, etc.

• Count total file size of many files in Windows

  When I want to burn a CD R with lots of files, I have to make sure the total file size in my folder doesn't exceed the capacity of the disc (680MB). In Windows are there possibilities to check the total file size of a bunch of files. I put them in a folder, right-click and check the properties. But this is an annoying trial and error kind of way. Either there are too many files in the folder, or too little. I watch the file size go up as I keep selecting more files, using ALT+going down button. No. 2 is my favorite way to do it. Here's my question: For some reason Windows (I still use XP) only shows the total file size of 100 selected files. When you select more than 100 files, no file size information appears any more. Is there way, a trick, an app, to work around this problem?

• How to get access to console to reset Cisco 3750?

  I acquired two Cisco 3750 switches from another part of my organization. I was able to complete the standard password/config reset procedure on one without any issues -- boot it, put it into express config mode, telnet in, reset the passwords, etc. The second one doesn't ever boot to the point where it displays anything on the console. When power cycled, the 'SYST' light flashes green a few times, then comes on a solid green and stays lit. None of the other lights ever flash or light up. Holding down the 'MODE' button for up to 30 seconds produces no noticeable effects. Nothing ever comes out on the console. Since I was able to configure the first one without any problems, I know my connectinon is good -- console port configured right, good cable, etc. Is this just a hardware problem with the switch? Is there any way I can recover from this and get the switch back into a state where I can configure it?

  If I want to send someone a piece of my screen this is what I currently do: PrtScr or Alt+PrtScr Open Paint.NET Paste the screen shot Make a selection Crop image to selection Save image to some location - and remember it! Go to some image hosting site (there are plenty of them in the days of Twitter) Click their "Browse" button Browse for the image if I happened to remember the location where I stored it :) Upload the image and obtain the link which I can share This is simply too many steps. I don't usually mind doing steps 1 to 5 but especially steps 6 and 9 are annoying. Jing is pretty close to what I'm looking for but I find their horrible URLs unbearable. If there was something with similar functionality but better or pluggable hosting, that would be great.

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out.   I would like to use Linux(Fedora) on a Aluminum MacBook Pro, but since the Touchpad on a MacBook Pro is only a giant button Apple does some custom tracking. When there is one finger placed, and a second follows (the click can occur before or after that) it will be interpreted as a drag. So the strong thumb can be used to hold pressure and the more accurate index finger can do the pointing. But Linux interprets this as a right click, since it only cares if two fingers are on the pad. Is there a way to achieve said behaviour? Cheers Jan

• Outlook connected to exchange does not send email

  I have multiple machines with Outlook 2010 connected to RackSpace hosted exchange server. Everything works fine, but emails send after a while since outlook started will not leave the outbox. Clicking Send & Receive will display the progress bar at 100% completed with no errors, but is not really finishing. The Cancel All button is still active. The emails in the outbox are bold & italic, so ready to be send. When I close outlook and start it again, the mails are sent immediately without problems. I have tried the following: Checked if there are any third party addins: only Microsoft Add ins Checked if the virus scanner is blocking anything, but McAfee is not doing this. Checked and Repaired the .ost file Increased the server time-out from 30 seconds to 60 seconds Nothing helped. Any suggestions?

• Visual Studio 2008 crashes whenever I try to add a file to TFS

  Wondering if anyone else has seen this or knows of a way to fix it. I have Visual Studio 2008 Pro with Team Explorer 2008 installed. Starting a couple of weeks ago any time I try to add a file to TFS (using the "Add Items to Folder" button in the Source Control Explorer window) VS crashes. I briefly see an "unhandled exception" dialog appear, but VS quits right after the dialog opens. I was able to see the exception at one point, and it looked like an index out of bounds exception trying to access some UI component list at -1 (can't remember the specifics, and it closes before I can bring it up now). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling VS a couple of times already, along with resetting all of my settings. Neither helped.

• Distinguishing between UI command & domain commands

  I am building a WPF client application using the MVVM pattern that provides an interface on top of an existing set of business logic residing in a library which is shared with other applications. The business library followed a domain-driven architecture using CQRS to separate the read and write models (no event sourcing). The combination of technologies and patterns has brought up an interesting conundrum: The MVVM pattern uses the command pattern for handling user-interaction with the view models. .NET provides an ICommand interface which is implemented by most MVVM frameworks, like MVVM Light's RelayCommand and Prism's DelegateCommand. For example, the view model would expose a number of command objects as properties that are bound to the UI and respond when the user performs actions like clicking buttons. Many implementations of the CQRS use the command pattern to isolate and encapsulate individual behaviors. In my business library, we have implemented the write model as command / command-handler pairs. As such, when we want to do some work, such as create a new order, we 'issue' a command (CreateOrderCommand) which is routed to the command-handler responsible for executing the command. This is great, clearly explained in many sources and I am good with it. However, take this scenario: I have a ToolbarViewModel which exposes a CreateNewOrderCommand property. This ICommand object is bound to a button in the UI. When clicked, the UI command creates and issues a new CreateOrderCommand object to the domain which is handled by the CreateOrderCommandHandler. This is difficult to explain to other developers and I am finding myself getting tongue-tied because everything is a command. I'm sure I'm not the first developer to have patterns overlap like this where the naming/terminology also overlap. How have you approached distinguishing your commands used in the UI from those used in the domain? (Edit: I should mention that the business library is UI-agnostic, i.e. no UI technology-specific code exists, or will exists, in this library.)

• Citrix XenApp application does not have keyboard focus when launched

  On new or existing Citrix XenApp 4.5 servers, I am having problems streaming the Allscripts Pro EHR application via the XenApp web interface. When users launch the application via the Citrix XenApp web interface, the application does not have focus, preventing users from typing in their username and password. If they use their mouse to select either the username or password fields, they still cannot enter any text. However, if they do any of the following actions, they can then enter in their username and password and the application runs without problems: Click on the Login button with empty fields. Logon fails but they can then enter their credentials. Minimize the login window and then maximize it. They can then gain keyboard focus to enter their credentials. What might be preventing this particular application from having focus when it launches?

• NTFS Error - file system structure is corrupt and unusable

  My Windows 7 (64) keeps completely locking up, and I have to hold the power button to shit it down. Event logs are showing EventID 55. I realize that this can be a warning sign of an impending disk failure, but my data on this machine is safely backed up and I don't feel like taking the time to replace the drive right now. When I have seen this problem before, I have been able to delete the offending folder with a Linux Live CD. (When CHKDSK /F didn't work). In this case, the folder is from VSS. I assume this is from Crashplan, my online backup provider. What are the ramifications of deleting this folder from Linux? Is it safe to do? "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume \Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy26."

• Why do all my browsers default to the "Impact" font?

  I've been struggling with a font issue which I hope you can help resolve. A few weeks ago I started seeing "Impact" as the default font on lots of webpages, rendering much of the content illegible. I think this issue began after I installed other fonts, but I'm not sure. The issue occurs on Chrome, IE and Firefox which suggests it is a Windows issue. By the time I tried to revert the changes via System Restore, it was too late. I tried to reset the default font but Windows does not seem to respond to that. When I click "Restore to default font settings" the button greys out but nothing else happens. No dialog box and no change in the issue. I've tried deleting the fonts in my font folder and re-installing them (from backup) but that did not work either. • Computer won't start unless power is removed for ~5 minutes

  I have a fairly standard 2-year old desktop computer (quad-core intel, single hard drive, decent video card, 300W power supply) which recently started acting up. I'm not sure what the cause is, so hopefully you can help. Sometimes (once a week-ish) I press the power button and nothing happens. No blinking, no sounds, no nothing. If I remove the power cord (or flip the switch on the power supply) I hear a capacitor discharge. If I leave it in the "no power at all" state for about 5 minutes then I can put the plug back in and the computer works perfectly. What is the issue? What do you think I have to replace?

• nautilus crash when merging/overwriting files

  On my Ubuntu 10.10, whenever I want to copy some files/folders over some other files/folders, or when I try to empty the trash, nautilus crashes! Example: I have a folder with some files. Now I want to overwrite this folder with a folder with the same name, same files, but some additional files, the merge window comes up, I choose merge and nautilus crashes (does not respond, when I press the close button I can force close it). Some times it even does the copying/emptying (trash), but it always crashes! This happens when copying to the same partition/ntfs partition/netshares, but not when I make a new folder and copy the files/folders into that (without overwriting anything). On a netshare, it's even possible to merge these files afterwards with another computer! dmesg/syslog/messages does not show any entry related to that problem. Does anyone have a solution for this very annoying problem? EDIT: dpkg -l nautilus* (see output in pastebin) EDIT2: I found out, nautilus already crashes before clicking replace/merge (as soon as the question appeares. In the video it's not entirely clear, that i click the cross before the force-close dialog appeares. • Android: how do I switch between game scenes in a game? Any tutorials?

  I am trying to create a simple game using the Android SDK without using AndEngine (or any other game engine). I have plenty of experience designing games from the past, but I'm having lots of trouble trying to use the Android SDK to make my game. By far my biggest hurdle right now is switching between views. That is, for example, going from the menu to the first level, etc. I am using a traditional model I learned (I think it's called a scene stack or something?) in which you push the current scene onto a stack and the game's main loop runs the top item of the stack. This model seems non-trivial to implement in the Android SDK, mostly because Android seems to be picky about which thread instantiates which view. My issue is that I want the first level to show up when you press a button on the main menu, but when I instantiate the first level (the level class extends SurfaceView and implements SurfaceHolder.Callback) I get a runtime error complaining that the thread that runs the main menu can't instantiate this class. Something about calling Looper.prepare(). I figured at this point I was probably doing things wrong. I'm not sure how to specifically phrase my issue into a question, so maybe I should leave it as either 1) Does anybody know a good way (or the 'proper' way) to switch between scenes in an Android game? or 2) Are there any tutorials out there which show how to create a game that doesn't take place entirely in one scene? (I have googled for a while to no avail... maybe someone else knows of one?) Thanks!

• Antenna Aligner Part 6: Little Robots

  A week ago I took temporary ownership of a HTC Desire S so that I could start testing my app under Android. Support for Android was not in my original plan, but when Nomad added support for it recently, I starting thinking why not! So with some trepidation, I clicked the Build for Android button on the Nomad toolbar... nothing. Hmm... that's not right, I was expecting something to build. After a bit of faffing around I finally realised that I hadn't read the text on the Android setup page properly (yes that's right, RTFM!), and I needed a two-part application identifier, separated by a dot. I did this (not sure what the two part thing is all about, that one my list to investigate!) After making the change, the Android build worked and created the apk file. I uploaded this to the device and nervously ran it... it worked!!!  Well, more or less! So, there was not splash screen, but this was no surprise because I only have the iOS icons and splash screen in my project at the moment. What was more concerning was the compass update didn't seem to be working. I suspect this is a result of using an iOS specific option in the Phonegap compass watcher. Another thing to investigate. I've also just noticed that the css gradient background hasn't worked either... These issues aside, it was actually more successful than I was expecting, so happy days! Right, lets get Googling...   Next time: Preparing for submission to the App Store! :-)

• Access - Force Form Refresh on New Record

  Let me set the stage here a bit: I have an Access project with various buttons, triggers, macros, etc. I needed an Appointment Date field to only show when the button APPOINTMENT MADE is toggled ON. This works great. The problem arises when you submit a form with the APPOINTMENT MADE toggled. Once the record is inserted, the Access file clears all fields, but leaves the Appointment Date enabled, when it should be disabled by default. I have tried the Current, Load, Before Insert, After Insert and many other options on the FORM properties. Am I missing a simple way to force a refresh so the field goes back to it's default DISABLED? Thanks in advance!
