• After installing VS 2010 - Generic Host Process For Win32 Services problem starts.

  After installing VS 2010 trial I am getting this error "Generic Host Process For Win32 Services Encountered A Problem and needs to close. When this message pops my computer just stuck and I can not even restart it normally. I have found one fix on net but after that fix I can not access my LAN. This fix change these values in registry. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netbt\parameters TransportBindName HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE EnableDCOM If I revert these registry changes then I again start getting 'Generic Host Process For Win32 Services' I have uninstall VS 2010 but this problem persist. This problem is not because of any virus. Any help to fix this or I have to re install Windows. Thanks.

  I just read this quote from Steve Jobs: "Doing LSD was one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." Also a quote from that article: He was hardly alone among computer scientists in his appreciation of hallucinogenics and their capacity to liberate human thought from the prison of the mind. Now I'm wondering if there's any evidence to support the theory that drugs can help make a "better" programmer. Has there ever been a study where programmers have been given drugs to see if they could produce "better" code? Is there a well-known programming concept or piece of code which originated from people who were on drugs? EDIT So I did a little more research and it turns out Dennis R. Wier actually documented how he took LSD to wrap his head around a coding project: "At one point in the project I could not get an overall viewpoint for the operation of the entire system. It really was too much for my brain to keep all the subtle aspects and processing nuances clear so I could get a processing and design overview. After struggling with this problem for a few weeks, I decided to use a little acid to see if it would enable a breakthrough, because otherwise, I would not be able to complete the project and be certain of a consistent overall design"[1] There is also an interesting article on wired about Kevin Herbet, who used LSD to solve tough technical problems and chemist Kary Mullis even said "...that LSD had helped him develop the polymerase chain reaction that helps amplify specific DNA sequences."   Can someone tell me how to remove dormant X sessions. This question is similar to Logging out other users from the command line, but more specific to controlling X displays which I find hard to kill. • Mouse settings/properties dialog box won't open in Windows 7

  Hi, I have a problem trying to open my computer's mouse settings by either going to the command prompt and typing, 'control mouse', 'main.cpl' (as researched online) or simply by trying to go to the Control Panel and clicking on 'Mouse' under Hardware and Sound section. I have also tried running cmd as Administrator and trying the above commands but that is of no help. Lastly, if I search for 'mouse' and click 'Mouse' from the Windows search bar, that doesn't work either. In the past I had bought and installed Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000 software and have just now bought and installed HP's Wireless Comfort Mobile mouse. Any help in this regard is highly recommended. I won't be able to restore or reinstall my laptop since it's a heavy use machine. Thanks! Yasser

• How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

  I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

• DVDs and CDs not recognized

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed on my computer (Sony Vaio VGN-NS205N). It reads some CDs and DVDs just fine, but many others it will not recognize at all, or will only recognize after opening and closing the CD tray many times. It just shows the cd/dvd drive as being empty and won't show that anything is on there at all. I have a few DVDs (from the same publisher) that work every time. This comes up most often when trying to show my kid Bob the Builder, etc. Some data CDs I would like to work with also have the same issue. It's not a hardware or defective disc problem, since all these will play in Windows on the same machine. It's just really annoying to have to switch operating systems to play videos or get data off discs. All the searches I have done people recommend installing medibuntu and other repositories. I have and they are all up to date. No change. Any help that works would be greatly appreciated.

• Dual-Boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 alongside Windows 7. I wanted to check out what it's all about. By the way, i actually like the interface a lot and the free office suite is very very nice. I love how they can save to the .docx as well. Onto the story: I installed it using this tutorial and I set it all up and everything and things were great. I used the EasyBCD 2.2 Tool and created an Ubuntu 12.04.1 entry and when I boot the computer the Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 option show up. However, when I click Ubuntu it does not boot. It say and error and says I must put in the Windows CD to repair or something like this. Here's my system specs: ASRock Extreme4 (EUFI BIOS) Corsair Vengaence 2x4GB nVidia GeForce 9800GT i5-3570K 3.4GHz Corsair 620W Modular 500GB WD Caviar Blue I have no clue what could be wrong with it and I would love any assistance. I am willing to mess around and if something happens wrong I can just reinstall windows and it won't be a huge deal. Thank you very much! • how to fix asyncmac.sys infection

  AVG anti-virus tells me that there is a virus in my asyncmac.sys. I tried to overwrite it with a copy of asyncmac.sys from another computer (making sure that it was the same version of Windows XP, but I was still nervous that I was going to break something), but when I reboot, I get the same virus warning. If I try to delete the file Windows (or somebody) automatically and immediately puts it back. I get a blue-screen death if I try to boot in safe mode. I tried to do a system restore to before I had the virus, but it tells me that it can't restore because nothing has changed. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

• Long term plan of attack to learn math?

  I am a web-developer with a desire to expand my skill-set to mathematics relevant to programming. As 2nd career, I am stuck in college doing some of the requirements while working. I was hoping the my education will teach me the needed skills to apply math, however I am quickly finding it to be too much easily-testable breadth-based approach very inefficient for the time invested. For example in my calculus 2 class, the only remotely useful mind expanding experience I had was volumes and areas under the curve. The rest was just monotonous glorified algebra, which while comes easy to me, could be done by software like wolfram alpha within seconds. This is not my idea of learning math. So here I am a frustrated student looking for a way to improve my understanding of math in a way that focuses on application, understanding and maximally removed needless tedium. However I cannot find a good long term study strategy with this approach in mind. So for those of like mind, how would you go about learning the necessary math without worrying too much about stuff a computer can do much better?

  EDIT:: installed mysql-server but no phpmyadmin (since phpmyadmin was installed before mysql, that resulted an error). How to reinstall phpmyadmin with database (there is no phpmyadmin datbase)? unstalling it and reinstalling it didn't help. i was trying to install phpmyadmin (and zend framework) through synaptic manager but in the middle i was prompted for password i thought it was phpmyadmin password and i proceeded but i got error and i aborted. and then again i tried to reinstall, it reinstalled but i am not getting phpmyadmin. • Ubuntu impossible to install: "unable to find a medium containing a live filesystem"

  Yes, I have read questions and answers with similar titles for this issue, which prevented me from installing Ubuntu for several MONTHS now, trying to figure it out. I have a MacBookPro with triple partition (one for Mac Snow Leopard, one for Windows 7, one for Linux) created with reFIT firmware (not BootCamp). I set up the system according to these instructions for reFIT: http://lifehacker.com/5531037/how-to-triple+boot-your-mac-with-windows-and-linux-no-boot-camp-required Now. There is a free partition ready to accept Linux into its arms, but Linux does not want to participate. Most answers to the issue "unable to find a medium containing a live filesystem" point to changing the BIOS booting system (which I don't know how to do, especially using this reFIT booting system), and to changing the socket of the USB (which does not concern me, since I am using a CD, actually I tried with a CD, then with a DVD, since a blank CD is only 700MB while the iso image file of Ubuntu is about 731MB). Anyway. This is what happens: I am in the Mac system (using the Mac partition) I insert the DVD with the burned image of Ubuntu (yes I have tried burning it again and agin on both CD and DVD blank discs). I restart the computer. When reFIT loads, I hold down the ALT key until the CD image appears. I select it, and hit Enter. A small Ubuntu icon appears at the bottom of the screen. Then a Ubuntu sign appears in the middle of the screen with small dots underneath, lighting up progressively over and over to indicate it's loading. Then everything turns black and the following message appears, at the end of a few lines of text: "unable to find medium with live file system". Please provide very practical suggestions on what to do to an unexperienced wannabe Ubuntu very patient user. Please start by saying how do I access the BIOS setup from reFIT bootup, and exactly what and why I need to try and change. (Will this mess up my reFIT bootup?) And anything else I need to do to finally be able to install Ubuntu. Thanks

So i am taking a website as an example to be more objective for you to decide its development price i should quote for the complete work.I would like to have specific figures. In past I have developed many projects for my classmates (Computer science and few .net) when i was in college and there i just arbitrarily quoted the price i will take depending on my mood and customer's ability to pay.. usually ranging from Rs.500 (about $10 USD) to Rs. 1500 (about $30 USD). I have also developed few websites but that was open-source and free. So taking this website as an example tell me how much should i charge for complete work from designing to payment gateway implementation (Excluding the charge the payment gateway provider will take). Few information you might like to consider. I am the only developer on this project if that makes any difference. And i would be using ASP.Net and MSSQL Express for server side processing and jQuery on client. Time period for development offered is about 4 to 6 Weeks. • File apparently doesn't exist when attempting to delete it

  A month or so back, I untarred the Linux source in a folder in Cygwin (I was curious as to whether or not it would compile with MinGW 'cause my other computer running Linux is a slow single core Sempron). I tried deleting it, but there's 1 file left, and it will not delete... Cygwin resides in C:\cygwin, and I untarred the source in C:\cygwin\src\linux-3.7.1. It didn't compile... So I tried deleting the folder. It was going well, until at the end, when I realized not all files are deleted. I tried deleting linux-3.7.1 folder again, and an error popped up: I opened the folder, and found that there's 1 source file left: aux.c, which is in C:\cygwin\src\linux-3.7.1\drivers\gpu\drm\nouveau\core\subdev\i2c\aux.c. It will not: Delete Open Move General properties: Security properties: How do I remove this file?

• SMART Status Data Interpretation - Disk Utility

  Last week my external harddisk (Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB in a custom enclosure) showed signs of failure (Disk Utility SMART Pre-failure status - several bad sectors) and I decided to change it. I bought a new HDD (Seagate Barracuda 2TB) and connected it to my Ubuntu box with a SATA to USB cable that could not report SMART status. I copied all the contents of the old HDD to the new HDD (one partition with rsync, the other with parted cp) and then gently replaced the old HDD with the new one inside my aluminum enclosure. For obscure reasons after reconnecting the new HDD through the old enclosure, the Linux box could not detect my partitions. I recovered the partitions with testdisk and restarted the computer. After the restart I checked the SMART status of the new HDD an I get this: Read Error Rate --------------- Normalized 108 Worst 99 Threshold 6 Value 16737944 I got a high value on the Seek Error Rate as well. Wondering why this happens I copied 2 GB directory from one partition to the other and rechecked the SMART status (5 minutes later). This time I got the following: Read Error Rate --------------- Normalized 109 Worst 99 Threshold 6 Value 24792504 As you see there has been an increase in the error rate. I am unable to interpret these numbers. Is my new hard disk already dying? What are the acceptable values in these fields for Seagate hard disks? Then why the assessment is still good? While I could get temperature and airflow temperature data from my old HDD, I can not fetch them for the new one. I noticed that my old hdd had got really hot sometimes. Is it possible that the enclosure is killing the harddisks due to high temperature?... Thanks

I have one connection to my local database server and one connection to the remote server. What I basically want to do is copy the database from one connection to the other.

  I've installed a software on my windows 8 computer which writes entries in my registry. How can I modify this registry entries for all users ? For example what I need to modify is values from this key but this key only refers to a single user: [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-543895283-3741240661-2983116896-500\Software\IvoSoft\ClassicStartMenu\Settings] But "S-1-5-21-543895283-3741240661-2983116896-500" is different depending on the user name. • Problems with icons and shutting down Ubuntu 12.04

  I recently upgraded from 11-10 to 12.04 as a dual boot (Windows 7) and am having problems with shutting down. I installed from a CD that I burned from the iso file, and to get it to boot from the CD, I needed to install the special help program from Windows that would then recognize the CD as the system booted.The installation gave me my own user account as well as a guest account. For the User account there is no "gear" icon (in the upper RH side) from which to access the shut down menu. Interestingly the icons for the Home folder, the Ubuntu One folder, and the System Settings folder are missing, although there are blank places shows these names if the mouse cursor is positioned over these areas. They will even launch with the press of a key - but no icons are visible. For the Guest account, all of these icons are visible and usable. The problem that occurs in shutting down is that I need to leave the User account, move to the Guest account (so that I can access the top right "gear" icon that has the shut down menu item) and press the shut down button. The problem here is that when the shut own menu appears and I press the confirmation that I wish to shut down the computer, the page blanks (as one might hope in the process of closing down), and then pops up with the log in menu, giving the option of logging in as a User or as a Guest. So the questions are: 1) how do you reinstate the far right top icon from which you can access the shut down drop down menu in the User account page. 2) how do you get the icons to display properly on the Left hand side (Home, Ubuntu One, System Settings, and Workspace Switcher) 3) how do you get the system to turn of when you press the shut down button! Boy oh boy! Thanks a bunch for any help!

• Setting up a router as a DNS server only

  I have a Linksys WRT54GL router that I don't need anymore, since I had to buy a 3G capable router (Dovado 3GN). As I only have a 3G connection at home, I want to optimize it as much as possible. I want to setup a caching DNS server, including some blacklisting of ad domains. The router currently runs the DD-WRT firmware. Is it possible to use this router as an ordinary computer, running only a DNS server, disabling all other features such as DHCP, WLAN, etc? Connecting it to my other router, should I simply run a cable into the WAN-port of the Linksys router?

• Need help diagnosing cause of BSOD

  I've got a Windows 7 PC here that was getting very frequent BSODs. The error codes were variant (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY), and it was impossible to use the computer for longer than an hour without getting one. I backed it all up and reinstalled Windows completely, thinking that it was a corrupt driver issue. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the BSODs with the same error messages on this fresh installation. This tells me that it must be some faulty piece of hardware, but I'm not sure what it would be. I ran Memtest+ on the machine, but did not get any errors after 2 passes. I also ran a few built-in recovery mode scans from the HP recovery partition. I need some ideas on how to test the rest of the hardware to solve this issue.

• How can I recover [data from] my failing USB key?

  I have a Corsair Flash Voyager USB key, and it's almost completely failed. When I plug it into my [WinXP] computer, the OS mounts it and open up explorer to the drive's root directory. However, if I try to copy any data off, I get an error message saying that the device is not there. If I leave it plugged in, the OS seems to oscillate between seeing it and not seeing it, since the "Safely Remove Hardware" tray icon appears and disappears every few seconds. The damage was probably caused by my abuse, either from plugging it in with my keys hanging off of it or from losing the cap and keeping it in my pocket uncapped. Is there anything I can do to save the data from it or even rehabilitate the drive?
