• How do I change local display resolution via SSH?

  I have a machine running Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS and I'm having problems with the local monitor. The Dell flat panel I'm using only displays this message while the computer running: "Cannot Display This Video Mode" and then the information: "Optimum resolution 1280x1024 60Hz". I'm fairly new to using an operating system wholly via command line but I'm learning fast. :) I can access the server fine via SSH so using it is not a problem. However, for where it is positioned at the moment, it would be much more convenient to use the computer locally. I'm just wondering how to change the local screen resolution via SSH to something usable by my monitor. Thanks for your time! BTW: I have also tried switching displays and I still have the same problem. Also BTW: I tried putting in the xrandr command and all I get back is: Can't open display

• I want to try and find and RFC for Business Listings.

  I'm trying to figure out how to find out if there's a good standard format for sharing business information such as: Business Name Address - well-defined fields Lat,Lng Coords Business Type - maybe from a well-defined enum, my starting point contains Retail,Food,Drink,Coffee,Service Hours of operation - including a spot for 'except laksdasd' or 'sometimes we open late' which could be just plain language Business Keywords - don't know if this is asking too much. how well do http meta tags work in practice? So, if no such thing exists, is this something I can submit to IETF? I can't currently find it on http://www.rfc-editor.org/cgi-bin/rfcsearch.pl , and vCard doesn't suit my needs.. Thanks!

• Should I use a unit testing framework to validate XML documents?

  From http://www.w3.org/XML/Schema: [XML Schemas] provide a means for defining the structure, content and semantics of XML documents. I'm using an XML Schema (XSD) to validate several large XML documents. While I'm finding plenty of support within XSD for checking the structure of my documents, there are no procedural if/else features that allow me to say, for instance, If Country is USA, then Zipcode cannot be empty. I'm comfortable using unit testing frameworks, and could quite happily use a framework to test content integrity. Am I asking for trouble doing it this way, rather than an alternative approach? Has anybody tried this with good / bad results? -- Edit: I didn't include this information to keep it technology agnostic, but I would be using C# / Linq / xUnit for deserialization / testing.

• Fatal Error when booting

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with ATI proprietary FGLRX graphic drivers When I boot, I can see this very quick message appearing; I don't have time to read it: **Fatal Error ..................................**(&@something i cant read) I searched through the log file in /var/log/ in order to find what is wrong and I did find something in the /var/log/Xorg.1.log: 21:31:08 [ 15.734] (--) using VT number 1 [ 204.647] Fatal server error: [ 204.647] xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call [ 204.647] [ 204.647] Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.x.org for help. [ 204.647] Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.1.log" for additional information. [ 204.647] But this is already Xorg.1.log. And there is a Xorg.0.log also & Xorg.0.log.old but it doesnt have any error in it. My system seems to work properly and it seems its not affected by this But how do I correct this message? Any suggestions?

• Image caching when rendering the same images on different pages

  I'm told to think about caching of images that will be displayed on the page. The images will be repeated throughout the website on different pages and I'm told to figure out the best way to cache these images. There could be few to dozen of images on single page. Here's few questions: Will browser caching work to display the same images across different web pages? Should I rather store images in stringified form in a memory instead, using JavaScript arrays? Store them on hard drive using 'localStorage'? What would be easiest yet best option for this? Are there any other alternatives? How to force cache? Any other information would be greatly appreciated...

• I removed Ubuntu from the BIOS menu but it comes back.

  For reasons too long to explain, I reluctantly removed Ubuntu from my computer. After completely removing it and deleting the partition that it was installed onto, I discovered that I still had two Ubuntu entries in the boot order in my BIOS menu. I deleted them by following the instructions in this answer: http://askubuntu.com/a/63613/54934 As I was doing it, everything appeared to go smoothly. However, upon reboot one of them came back. What's going on here? How do I delete it permanently? I'll gladly provide any other information that may be needed to diagnose the problem. Thanks.

• What are good/fast methods to pull data from a database using JavaScript?

  I'm pretty new to web technologies and I am creating a filter control that will have cascading controls. We are doing a lot of this through JavaScript and are debating the best route to take to the database. HTTPHandlers, WebServices and Ajax are all being considered (or a combination of them). We want to be able to handle a million rows in theory, so it has to be scalable to at that. We are going through JavaScript as our page must not do post-backs, if your'e wondering. I'm asking from an architectural standpoint, but will take any useful information. Links, control suggestions - anything you have, I'll happily listen to.

• Leapfrog Crammer won't mount as a USB flash drive

  I can't seem to get the Leapfrog Crammer study and sound system to show up as a flash drive under ubuntu so I can transfer stuff to it. I don't want to install the leapfrog bloatware, can someone help me with this? Additional Information: When I plug my crammer into my computer it shows a 1 MB file system with a link to download the crammer software. I want to know how to access the rest of the crammer's file system so I can transfer music to it. The crammer does not show any other partitions in natulius. According to an article on the internet, the crammed is divided into three partitions: One with a link to install the crammer software, one with all content(music, flash cards, etc.) and one for firmware. I want to know how to access the one with the content so I can add music to the player. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks in advance.

  XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) is a declarative- XMLbased language used for the transformation of XML documents into other XML documents. Using XSLT , the original document does not changed; rather, a new document is created based on the content of an existing one. • Internet connection crashes while wifi / lan stay connected

  I am connected to a router by wifi or lan. But every few moments (sometimes seconds, sometimes half an hour) my connection to the internet breaks down. So in one moment I can surf with my firefox and have ping times of 20 ms (wifi) to the google server. And in the next moment I can't open any pages in any browser and the ping shows no new messages first and then "Destination Host Unreachable". This is especially odd as another computer or my smart phone stays connected at the same time to the same network and seems to notice nothing. So I have a problem independend of wifi or lan drivers but with something else. Where should I look for logs that could tell me more information? I can't find some in syslog. Just if I reconnect to the router (wich works for another few moments) there are a lot of informations. But everythin is okay then.

• Possible to pass pygame data to memory map block?

  I am building a matrix out of addressable pixels and it will be run by a Pi (over the ethernet bus). The matrix will be 75 pixels wide and 20 pixels tall. As a side project, I thought it would be neat to run pong on it. I've seen some python based pong tutorials for Pi, but the problem is that they want to pass the data out to a screen via pygame.display function. I have access to pass pixel information using a memory map block, so is there anyway to do that with pygame instead of passing it out the video port? • Is it possible to pay customers with PayPal?

  Usually with PayPal we buy goods and services by sending money from customer to business. Now, I want my business to pay my customers; I want to allow them to withdraw money from a virtual wallet on my website. I did notice there is an 'Adaptive Payments API' which mentioned something vaguely similar to this, but I haven't been able to search up enough information to come to any conclusion. So is it possible to send money from business to customer (autonomously) with PayPal? If not, are there any alternatives?

• Is JScript dying? If so, where should I go? [closed]

  I recently poked around Google for a little bit, looking for information about coding JScript. It's very sparse, which surprised me -- it took a link to a link to find Microsoft's own reference, which appears to omit most if not all references to console-based scripting that extends past Javascript. I'm working with the console here, not a webpage, so input and output seems very different than what Microsoft explains. If JScript is dying (and it appears to be so), where do I go from here? VBScript? My options are limited because the computers I'm using this on are carefully patrolled for new software. JScript's similarity to JavaScript was the biggest reason I had chosen it for porting over some of my prior work. I'm specifically looking for, at best, a console scripting language that doesn't need any extra software on Windows XP or higher, that at least supports standard input, output, pause, and file manipulation, little else.

The most important things I want this series to answer is : What is it?  Why do I care? How do I do it? I hope that you enjoy this series. Let’s get started: Tip/Trick #16) What is it? Find out version information about Silverlight and which WebKit it is using by going to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/. Why do I care? I’ve had those users that its just easier to give them a site and say copy/paste the line that says User Agent in order to troubleshoot a Silverlight problem. I’ve also been debugging my own Silverlight applications and needed an easy way to determine if the plugin is disabled or not. How do I do it: Simply navigate to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/ and hit the Verify button. An example screenshot is located below: Results from Chrome 7 Results from Internet Explorer 8 (With Silverlight Disabled) Tip/Trick #17) What is it? Use Lambdas whenever you can. Why do I care?  It is my personal opinion that code is easier to read using Lambdas after you get past the syntax. How do I do it: For example: You may write code like the following: void MainPage_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { //Check and see if we have a newer .XAP file on the server Application.Current.CheckAndDownloadUpdateAsync(); Application.Current.CheckAndDownloadUpdateCompleted += new CheckAndDownloadUpdateCompletedEventHandler(Current_CheckAndDownloadUpdateCompleted); } void Current_CheckAndDownloadUpdateCompleted(object sender, CheckAndDownloadUpdateCompletedEventArgs e) { if (e.UpdateAvailable) { MessageBox.Show( "An update has been installed. To see the updates please exit and restart the application"); } } To me this style forces me to look for the other Method to see what the code is actually doing. The style located below is much easier to read in my opinion and does the exact same thing. void MainPage_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { //Check and see if we have a newer .XAP file on the server Application.Current.CheckAndDownloadUpdateAsync(); Application.Current.CheckAndDownloadUpdateCompleted += (s, e) => { if (e.UpdateAvailable) { MessageBox.Show( "An update has been installed. To see the updates please exit and restart the application"); } }; } Tip/Trick #18) What is it? Prevent development Web Service references from breaking when Visual Studio auto generates a new port number. Why do I care?  We have all been there, we are developing a Silverlight Application and all of a sudden our development web services break. We check and find out that the local port number that Visual Studio assigned has changed and now we need up to update all of our service references. We need a way to stop this. How do I do it: This can actually be prevented with just a few mouse click. Right click on your web solution and goto properties. Click the tab that says, Web. You just need to click the radio button and specify a port number. Now you won’t be bothered with that anymore. Tip/Trick #19) What is it? You can disable the Close Button a ChildWindow. Why do I care?  I wouldn’t blog about it if I hadn’t seen it. Devs trying to override keystrokes to prevent users from closing a Child Window. How do I do it: A property exist on the ChildWindow called “HasCloseButton”, you simply change that to false and your close button is gone. You can delete the “Cancel” button and add some logic to the OK button if you want the user to respond before proceeding. Tip/Trick #20) What is it? Cleanup your XAML. Why do I care?  By removing unneeded namespaces, not naming all of your controls and getting rid of designer markup you can improve code quality and readability. How do I do it: (This is a 3 in one tip) Remove unused Designer markup: 1) Have you ever wondered what the following code snippet does? xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" This code is telling the designer to do something special with this page in “Design mode” Specifically the width and the height of the page. When its running in the browser it will not use this information and it is actually ignored by the XAML parser. In other words, if you don’t need it then delete it. 2) If you are not using a namespace then remove it. In the code sample below, I am using Resharper which will tell me the ones that I’m not using by the grayed out line below. If you don’t have resharper you can look in your XAML and manually remove the unneeded namespaces. 3) Don’t name an control unless you actually need to refer to it in procedural code. If you name a control you will take a slight performance hit that is totally unnecessary if its not being called. <TextBlock Height="23" Text="TextBlock" />   That is the end of the series. • How to get BURG on 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal)

  I've been using BURG for years to get rid of the eye sore that is the standard GRUB interface. When I upgraded to Quantal, the repository does not contain the updated information. I.e. after I add sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/burg sudo apt-get update I get the annoying response W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/n-muench/burg/ubuntu/dists/quantal/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found It's been like this for a month, contrary to various websites which say it works. Is BURG being maintained? Have they created a better alternative (such as integration with GRUB, like it should have been in the first place). How do I get a decent-looking bootloader?

You can configure it as you wish. For Office 365 (SharePoint Online), the limit is 7GB per user. Number of items (documents and folders): You can sync up to 20,000 items in your SkyDrive (personal library). You can sync up to 5,000 items from other libraries, per library. In other words, you could sync 10 libraries (for example), with each library having up to 5000 items. Third, site limits: No fixed limits. It depends on your computer's resources. • Unable to locate essential development tools Ubuntu 11.04

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 (VMware). I aim to implement OpenMP. Im using gcc 4.5 compiler. I tried to install it by using the command sudo apt-get install gcc 4.5. Afterwards I proceed with gcc -fopenmp foo.c BUT the output was: gcc: foo.c: No such file or directory gcc: no input files –. Now I tried to install the package by using : ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install essential Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Unable to locate package essential. I also tried apt-cache search essential and after that sudo apt-get install essential-dev But the same error again, E: Unable to locate package essential-dev Any solution,please? Do I need to download any package? What should I do? Thank you in advance :))

• Help with intel Imac 2008 Audio not working

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and I get no audio except if i insert speakers and set them as headphones. This means really weird feedback and little volume. i'd like to set it back to the mac's default speakers but currently no matter what graphical interface i go into such as Audio or Alsamixer i can not fix the problem.Ive run alsamixer and looked thoroughly throught the forums but cannot find the answer to my problem. When i input cat /proc/asound/cards i get 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0x50600000 irq 47 Any help would be very much appreciated and as a newcomer i would be glad to give you any information you need.
