  • Cronjob as root?

    I'm having a bit of a problem with cronjobs for backups. I've set up the following in sudo crontab -e (not under personal account): 0 1 * * * /backups/dobackup /backups/dobackup contains this: #!/bin/sh touch ITRAN tar -cvpjf /backups/$(date +%d.%m.%Y)_backup.tar.bz2 --exclude=/backups --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/sys --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/media --exclude=/dev / The backup file is created, but the file ITRAN is not. Also, the backup file is vastly smaller than expected: -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 371620259 2012-06-21 12:39 21.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1023211449 2012-06-22 18:00 22.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1512785 2012-06-23 01:00 23.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1023272455 2012-06-24 22:41 24.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1514027 2012-06-25 01:00 25.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 The backups with much larger file sizes are created by manually running sudo /backups/dobackup.   • Windows does not recognize DVDs inserted into Blu-ray drive

    I am having a problem with a Blu-ray drive I have in my PC. Its a Blu-ray reader drive and it reads and writes CDs and DVDs. My drive has been working great for about a year now, but for some reason now, when I insert a DVD, Windows 7 doesn't recognize that there is a disc in the drive. I have to eject the disc and insert it again. I sometimes have to do this like 30 times before it "catches" and Windows 7 recognizes the disc. My discs are not scratched up. It does it even with brand new discs. I've tried about 10 different DVDs and the same problem happens. One thing that is weird though is that the problem does not seem to happen when I insert Blu-ray discs. The problem only happens with DVD discs. I tried running a drive lens cleaner. Same issue. Any suggestions?

  • Using Google Talk with a non-apps, non-gmail Google account

    I created a Google account with an existing e-mail address from a domain that is NOT hosted by Google. This address is not on an Apps domain and has no gmail service of any kind. Still I am able to add it as a Google account on an Android device with no problem. If the device is running Jelly Bean (where the Google Talk app allows switching between accounts) I can sign in and chat works fine. I can also sign into Talk with this account via the iGoogle home page. Now how can I use this account with a standalone chat client like iChat, Pidgin, or Empathy? It doesn't seem to work with login ID [email protected] using SSL to connect to server talk.google.com (tried ports 5222 and 5223). Are iGoogle and Android doing something magical that no other Jabber client is allowed, or am I just missing a step?

  • Linux Distro for Beginners

    Well... I know that's the question arising all over the Internet, but I couldn't find an answer to suit me after googling for quite some time. I'd like to get a Linux distribution, and start learning using the CLI. I'm looking for a distribution already having GNOME installed, as I'll be using Linux-Command.org as my learning resource, and I'm not very familiar with CLI-based web browsers. I'd mainly like to get to know my way around a UNIX-based system, and then I think I'd like to pick up a CLI-only distribution, and start doing more complex stuff. I've tried Ubuntu, Fedora Core, OpenSolaris and FreeBSD (the last two aren't linux distros, I know). Ubuntu and FC are fine, they do come with Firefox, but I'm not really sure they're meant for learning purposes. OpenSolaris was OK as well, but I haven't got to play with it enough. FreeBSD 7.2 did not want to install itself on my 13" MacBook Pro, it generated a kernel panic everytime while copying the files to the disk. So to sum this up, I'm trying to learn Linux, and I'm willing to invest time into this (that is, not giving up when the first problems arise). I also have intermediate knowledge of C++, if it helps, and I'm also using the CLI-vim to write small C++ CLI-based programs, so text editing should be any problem. And... speaking of Macs, how am I going to be limited if I try to learn how to use UNIX-based systems using the OS X Terminal? It uses bash 3.2, isn't this the same shell as the one found on most of the Linux machines? How does the fact that OS X is based on FreeBSD 4.4, if I'm not mistaking, affect this? Thanks in advance, and hopefully, I'll have a starting point ASAP.

  • Windows 7 search doesn’t find text strings

    I’m not able to find any text strings starting not from the beginning of word in filename or in file content using Windows 7 search. My Windows 7 search configuration: Let’s say I’m searching for a documents containing word “content”. I’m able to find those documents when searching for “content”, “conte”, “con” (as long as the string includes the beginning of the word). "content" "con" But if I search for “ontent”, “tent” or any other combination that doesn’t include the beginning of the word, Windows search won't find it. I've tried other indexing/searching software such as Copernic Desktop search, Google desktop search. Those programs also weren’t able to find part of the word starting from the middle of the word. For instance, it finds “conte”, but doesn’t find “onte”. Finds “conte” Doesn’t find “onte” I got the same problem using Copernic desktop search. On the other hand, when I use non-indexing content search software such as Agent Ransack or FileSeek, I get the same results when searching for “conte” or “onte”: “conte” “onte” Why do all pre-indexing content search applications (Windows search, Google desktop, Copernic desktop search) fail to search for a string inside the words? Why do non-indexing applications find text strings wherever they are: in the beginning, middle or end of the word? I’ve tried wildcards and other constructions with no luck. *onte onte “onte” content:onte content:onte content:~onte All these searched doesn’t find the word “content”. How can I make Windows search find strings from any part of words? Could you try these searches and see if they work for you? Or is this normal behavior? Thank you.     So I was booting up my box and for some odd reason my BIOS had lost settings (again), thus resetting everything to defaults. I was digging around making sure things were configured to my liking and noticed the option to enable ACPI 2.0 support. It was disabled by default but I was wondering: Do I need ACPI 2.0 support? Motherboard is ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe. I should also note that I primarily use Windows-7.

    I am attempting to use ssh-agent on Ubuntu 13.10 so that I will not have to enter my passphrase to unlock a key every time I want to use ssh or git. As you can see below, ssh-agent appears to be restarting for some reason.   • Is there a way to make Apple Mail work well with Exchange server calendar?

    My office uses Macs, but most of our clients use Windows and Outlook. Whenever people send invitations from Apple Mail to a Windows/Outlook machine, the invitations are garbled and look nothing like the nicely formatted invitations that Outlook people are used to. We also have no tools to view shared calendars, so we can choose mutually open time slots, and other useful calendar features that Outlook has and Apple Mail seems not to. So is there a plugin or third party program that will give Apple Mail the nice calendar features of Outlook? (By the way, I've looked into actually buying Outlook for Mac, and the pricing is kind of prohibitive, because you MUST buy the whole Office Suite, which we already have, there's no upgrade path, and there's no volume discounting.)

    I've had a few documents across my desk that appear to have a corrupted or recursive style for much of the body text: Char char char char char char Does anyone know what causes this and how to permanently delete this style? When I try to delete it, it disappears from the Styles and Formatting pane of Word, only to reappear later when different text is selected. Input or guidance much appreciated.

  • Why does only "network" appear in Startup Disks on my Mac?

    I have a Linux dual boot setup with my Mac (with Leopard). When I open System Preferences Startup Disk I only see "Network Startup" and no HDD or BOOTCAMP as expected. So now, annoyingly, because "Network Startup" is the only option, it tries to start using the network (the flashing globe) for a short while rather than booting directly into Mac OS X. Is there a way to either fix Startup Disk or manually hack this?

    I just purchased an Asus VG248 monitor (supports 144Hz refresh rate) and I can not increase the monitor's refresh rate beyond 60Hz from Windows. My system setup: 2x AMD 6990 graphics cards 1x Asus VG236 connected via DVI cable to graphics card #1 DVI port #1 (120Hz) 1x Asus VG248 connected via DVI cable to graphics card #1 DVI port #2 (60Hz) Does anyone know why I can not set the new monitor to a higher refresh rate?

  • Why does bash sometimes think my $HOME isn't the correct directory?

    Like the title says it seems that bash sometimes misidentifies my $HOME. This cropped up after a seemingly unique series of events that I will now replay in broad strokes. Running OS X 10.6 with normal, local account Work binds my account to Active Directory Much time passes with no issues Set up rvm to manage Ruby installs (this becomes important later) Upgraded to OS X 10.7 a few days ago After successful install, attempted to log in, was presented with "Must reset password" dialog that never allowed a password to be reset. Would simply shake the box after new password was entered. Much googling was done. Much more googling was done. Swearing was had. Logged in as root, created new account, set as admin, deleted /Users/[new account], renamed /Users/[old account] to /Users/[new account] Logged out of root, logged into new account with no issues After OS X asking for a my account password a few times to update Keychain and other system-level stuff it was back to business as usual. Opened Terminal, cd to project folder, tried "rails server" and was presented with: /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/dependency.rb:247:in to_specs': Could not find rails (>= 0) amongst [] (Gem::LoadError) from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems/dependency.rb:256:into_spec' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/rubygems.rb:1210:in gem' from /usr/local/bin/rails:18:in' Ran through a few exercises, decided to rm -rf ~/.rvm and reinstall. Running a --trace on the rvm installer shows it dies on this line: mkdir: /Users/[old account]: Permission denied Scrolling back through the --trace log I see many more mentions of /Users/[old account]. When inspect the install script the offending line is looking at "${HOME}/.rvm" as it tries to run the mkdir. To my confusion I also see mentions of /Users/[new account] in the log. I've tried exporting a new HOME in my .bash_profile to no luck. Can anyone guess why /Users/[old account] would still be kicking around?

  • Windows Media Center says "Searching for tuners" when I try to play live TV

    After upgrading from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to the 8.1 preview, I need some help in being able to watch live TV again. When I try to now, it says Please Wait. Searching for tuners. I tried reinstalling the software for the Hauppauge WinTV DCR-2650 TV tuner, and upgrading the firmware for both the tuner and the Cisco STA-1520 tuning adapter. I also tried swapping around the USB ports, cold-booting the devices, and running the Set Up TV Signal setting in WMC, but that says The TV signal cannot be configured because a TV tuner was not detected. Both devices look fine in Device Manager, reporting the "This device is working properly" status. I'm not sure if this is related, but I did have some network connectivity issues immediately after upgrading to Windows 8.1 where my either my subnet mask or default gateway was missing, and since the TV tuner shows up as a network device, I wonder if that might be related. However, I really don't know how those settings should look and Hyper-V sort of further complicates things with the virtual Ethernet adapters:

There seem to be a lot of people having trouble getting 10.04 and red5 0.9 working together. I've tried red5-0.9.1.tar.gz and red5_0.9.0-RC1_all.deb. The libraries above should be all that are needed according to Red5's documentation and I got the latest version of each.

  • Windows explorer locks files

    I'm using Office 2010 & Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. My problem starts when I attempt to save e-mail messages to my PC that I have received via Outlook (my ISP is Comcast). I'm using the default .msg file extension option when I attempt to save these e-mails. The resultant files are locked and do not show the normal "envelope" icon. Instead, it’s a “blank page” icon with the right upper corner folded in. These files refuse to open either by double clicking on them or right clicking and trying to open them with Outlook. And when I return to Outlook, I discover that Outlook is now hung up and I have to close it via the Task Manager. To make matters worse, I’ve also discovered that every e-mail message that I've saved on my PC over the years has also somehow become locked and their original "envelope" icon has been replaced with the "blank page" icon. I found and installed an application called LockHunter. As a result, when I right click on a saved and locked e-mail message, I’ve given an option to find out what's locking it. Each time I'm told that the culprit is Windows explorer.exe. When I unlock the file the normal envelope icon is sometimes displayed (but not always) but at least the file can then be opened. But the file is still “squirrely” as it can’t be moved or saved to a folder until it’s unlocked again. On this second attempt, LockHunter says it’s now locked by Outlook.exe. By the way, I don't have this issue when I save Word, Excel & PowerPoint files; only with Outlook. I've exhausted every remedy that I can think of including: making sure that the file and folder options are checked to always show icons and not thumbnails; running the Windows 7 & Office 2010 repair options which find nothing amiss; running a complete system scan with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool with negative results; verifying that Outlook is the default for opening e-mails; updating all of my applications via Secunia Personal Software Inspector; uninstalling every application that I felt was unnecessary; doing a registry cleanup via CC Cleaner; having Windows Security Essentials always on (it did find one Java Trojan recently which was quarantined and then deleted); uninstalling a bunch of non-Microsoft shell extensions; and deactivating all of the Outlook Add-ins and then re-activating each one. None of this solves the problem. I’d welcome any advice on how to resolve this.

  • Dreamweaver not loading due to workspace file problem

    I went to launch Dreamweaver CS 5.5 and this message popped up: XML parsing fatal error: Invalid document structure, line 1, file C:\Documents...(file path)...Workspace\My Workspace.xml It was followed by The following panel layout is missing or could not be read: C:...My Workspace.xml The application will not have a correct layout. Please load one from WindowsWorkspace After that, Dreamweaver acted as if it was going to load, but never did. When I tried to close the program, it crashed. I followed the file path and I saw two files: My Workspace.xml 0kb and My Workspace 5kb. The second one has an unknown file type. I deleted the first file and renamed the unknown file type to My Workspace.xml; everything worked fine after that point. Why did Dreamweaver do this? This has happened several times, but I have not changed anything that should affect that file type.
