• Working with Tile Notifications in Windows 8 Store Apps – Part I

  One of the features that really makes Windows 8 apps stand out from others is the tile functionality on the start screen. While icons allow a user to start an application, tiles provide a more engaging way to engage the user and draw them into an application. Examples of “live” tiles on part of my current start screen are shown next: I’ll admit that if you get enough of these tiles going the start screen can actually be a bit distracting. Fortunately, a user can easily disable a live tile by right-clicking on it or pressing and holding a tile on a touch device and then selecting Turn live tile off from the AppBar: The can also make a wide tile smaller (into a square tile) or make a square tile bigger assuming the application supports both squares and rectangles. In this post I’ll walk through how to add tile notification functionality into an application. Both XAML/C# and HTML/JavaScript apps support live tiles and I’ll show the code for both options.   Understanding Tile Templates The first thing you need to know if you want to add custom tile functionality (live tiles) into your application is that there is a collection of tile templates available out-of-the-box. Each tile template has XML associated with it that you need to load, update with your custom data, and then feed into a tile update manager. By doing that you can control what shows in your app’s tile on the Windows 8 start screen. So how do you learn more about the different tile templates and their respective XML? Fortunately, Microsoft has a nice documentation page in the Windows 8 Store SDK. Visit http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/hh761491.aspx to see a complete list of square and wide/rectangular tile templates that you can use. Looking through the templates you’ll It has the following XML template associated with it:  <tile> <visual> <binding template="TileSquareBlock"> <text id="1">Text Field 1</text> <text id="2">Text Field 2</text> </binding> </visual> </tile> An example of a wide/rectangular tile template is shown next:    <tile> <visual> <binding template="TileWideImageAndText01"> <image id="1" src="image1.png" alt="alt text"/> <text id="1">Text Field 1</text> </binding> </visual> </tile>   To use these tile templates (or others you find interesting), update their content, and get them to show for your app’s tile on the Windows 8 start screen you’ll need to perform the following steps: Define the tile template to use in your app Load the tile template’s XML into memory Modify the children of the <binding> tag Feed the modified tile XML into a new TileNotification instance Feed the TileNotification instance into the Update() method of the TileUpdateManager In the remainder of the post I’ll walk through each of the steps listed above to provide wide and square tile notifications for an application. The wide tile that’s shown will show an image and text while the square tile will only show text. If you’re going to provide custom tile notifications it’s recommended that you provide wide and square tiles since users can switch between the two of them directly on the start screen. Note: When working with tile notifications it’s possible to manipulate and update a tile’s XML template without having to know XML parsing techniques. This can be accomplished using some C# notification extension classes that are available. In this post I’m going to focus on working with tile notifications using an XML parser so that the focus is on the steps required to add notifications to the Windows 8 start screen rather than on external extension classes. You can access the extension classes in the Windows 8 samples gallery if you’re interested.   Steps to Create Custom App Tile Notifications   Step 1: Define the tile template to use in your app Although you can cut-and-paste a tile template’s XML directly into your C# or HTML/JavaScript Windows store app and then parse it using an XML parser, it’s easier to use the built-in TileTemplateType enumeration from the Windows.UI.Notifications namespace. This can be done using standard XML DOM manipulation techniques. The example code below locates the image folder and loads the path to an image file located in the project into it’s inner text.   We have two Windows 2008 R2 SP1 servers running in a SQL failover cluster. On one of them we are getting the following events in the security log every 30 seconds. The parts that are blank are actually blank. Has anyone seen similar issues, or assist in tracking down the cause of these events? No other event logs show anything relevant that I can tell. Attempting to install pdo_dblib from the appropriate version php source code. I have tried a variety of methods and searched quite a bit for help on this topic, but have yet to be successful.   I am kinda stuck with a problem I am trying to wrap my head around for days now. Here is what I am doing: By using Veewee, I am creating a VirtualBox image and then I create a Vagrant box from it. See here, here Finally I run puppet from Vagrant to install RabbitMQ, see here. Veewee, Vagrant and VirtualBox all run on MacOS X 10.7.4. The vagrant box itself is CentOS 6.2. This worked fine for quite some time until I was recreating the VirtualBox image a couple of days ago.   I've installed the "emacs" package from yum, but typing emacs at the terminal doesn't launch the GUI version. I was under the impression it installed by default, and emacs -nw would be used for the terminal version. Is there a GUI package available for Fedora 14 (GNOME)? I couldn't find "emacs-gtk" or "emacs-gnome" or any X packages with yum search emacs-. Edit: To clarify, this is about GNU Emacs and not XEmacs.

  I am quite surprised to see that Windows Explorer is locking my external hard disk. Is there any reason why explorer.exe is holding on to my external hard disk? Before I was trying to detach the external hard disk, I was opening a csproj file using Visual Studio 2008. I made sure that I closed down Visual Studio before trying to detach the external hard disk. There was no other active program except Google Chrome, from what I could see, that was running.

  I have a redhat server that isnt resolving dependencies correctly. I want to install httpd via yum "yum install httpd" and it installs correctly, but when i go to start httpd I get the following error: /sbin/service httpd restart Stopping httpd: [FAILED] Starting httpd: /usr/sbin/httpd: error while loading shared libraries: libaprutil-1.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory [FAILED] It is missing the dependency for apr-util package. Weirdly the i386 package is installed and not the x86_64 package.   Task at hand: Microsoft sign drivers on Win 7. I microsoft signed my driver package 3 times every time thinking I might have missed a step or something. However, I cannot seem to get rid of the Windows Security error message "Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software'. This is not the first time I have signed the driver packages. I was successfully able to sign other driver packages a few months ago. However, with this driver package I keep getting Windows security dialog box. Here's the procedure I follow - Create a new cat file using INF2CAT tool. Self sign the driver using a Versign Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority - G5.cer. Run the microsoft tests on DTM Servers and clients with the devices that use this driver. Create WLK submission package. Self sign the cab file. Submit the package for certification. The catalog file that comes back after successfully passing tests says Name of signer "Microsoft Windows Hardware Comptibility Publisher". When I check the validity of signature using SignTool, it says the signature is vaild. However, when I try to install the driver with new signed catalog file the windows complain. Any ideas? I am using the same certificate I used when I signed those two driver packages a few months ago. It costs $250 per signing from Microsoft. I would think that Microsoft would complain about it during certification if the certificate is wrong. I use the following command to self sign the CAT file. • Ubuntu unattended-upgrades stops apache

  This morning i was alerted to the fact that both apache instances serving my app were not responding to requests from my load balancer. I attempted apachectl restart and it said apache was not running. So, i started apache on both instances and got the service up again.   Error i am getting:-- E: I wasn't able to locate a file for the sun-java6-bin package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package. (due to missing arch) then a blue dialog box appears with OK (Which is not clickable and pressing enter is not workin.) EDIT sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo aptitude clean sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude dist-upgrade sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts Tried this but still not working... same problem.

• Windows remote administration suite that doesn't rely on Active Directory, Domains, etc

  I know there are a number of suites out there that allow Windows machines on a Domain, or in Active Directory to be remotely administrated (windows updates, program installs, maintenance, etc); but does there exist a package that does this for non-AD/Domain setups? The kind of things I'm looking for: manage windows updates, + automatic applying custom package pushing (custom scripts, etc) general maintenance, visibily of health works for 2003/2008/2008R2 works without Active Directory or being part of a Domain (Might be able to manage putting all the machines on a Workgroup, if that helps)
