• Setting up Metro 2.0 with Jetty 7

  This question relates to a previous question of mine. I am attempting to set-up a low overhead Web Container using Jetty 7 that I can deploy Web Services using Metro 2.0. I have installed the following Metro 2.0 libs into jetty/lib: webservices-extra-api.jar webservices-extra.jar webservices-rt.jar webservices-tools.jar And the following into a new jetty/lib/endorsed directory: jsr173_api.jar webservices-api.jar I start Jetty with the following script (Windows) to ensure that jetty/lib/endorsed is part of the 'endorsed library path' and to ensure that Jetty adds the webservices jars to its classpath: @echo off set JETTY_HOME=C:\dev\jetty-7.1.0 set JAVA_OPTS=-Xmx1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -Djetty.home=%JETTY_HOME% -Djava.endorsed.dirs=%JETTY_HOME%\lib\endorsed -Djetty.class.path=%JETTY_HOME%\lib\webservices-rt.jar;%JETTY_HOME%\lib\endorsed\webservices-api.jar -DSTOP.PORT=8079 -DSTOP.KEY=jettykey pushd %JETTY_HOME% java %JAVA_OPTS% -jar start.jar popd However when I deploy a WebServices war file (for example Metro sample 'pricequote'), I get the following exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.sun.xml.ws.transport.http.servlet.WSServletContextListener Can anyone help me with this please? I suspect it's related to the order of classes in Jetty's classpath?

• Strawberry Perl command line question

  I replaced ActivePerl with Strawberry Perl on my WinXP last week. I found I must run my Perl script with the command of perl myperl.pl; otherwise I only need run myperl.pl before install Strawberry. How can I only run myperl.pl as before? I checked my environment configuration as below. • Visual Studio 2008 - syntax-highlighting and intellisense not working for aspx, js, css

  Hello all, I'm having problems with Visual Studio 2008, namely, syntax-highlighting and intellisense for *.aspx, *.js and *.css files (and maybe more) not working. Also, when I go to Tools - Options... - Text editor - HTML - Format, I see this error message: "An error occurred loading this property page" Everything was working fine before, until recently. The only change that might have possibly triggered this (but I am not 100% sure whether it stopped working at that exact time or some other time) was a change of the display language in my Windows 7 installation. I have already tried running: devenv /Setup devenv /ResetSkipPkgs devenv /ResetSettings ...none of which helped. Also, setting my default system font to Tahoma, which was a suggestion I found somewhere else, did not work for me (it was Tahoma before, since I use the Windows Classic theme). • using Silverlight in SCORM content

  I'm building a LMS system using Sharepoint (WSS 3.0) with the Sharepoint Learning Kit (SLK). One of the requirements is to be able to host Silverlight content within the SCORM package. Has anyone done this before? I haven't been able to find much (anything) online that talks about how to do this. Most of the content tools that exist for SCORM are able to handle Flash, but I haven't come across anything that will do Silverlight. If all else fails, I'll try to manually build a SCORM package, but I'd really like to find some examples or howtos of doing this with Silverlight first. Has anyone done this before?

• Debugging error "The Type 'xx' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced"

  The full error is as follows: The type 'System.Windows.Forms.Control' is defined in an assembly that is not referenced. You must add a reference to assembly 'System.Windows.Forms, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089'. and it points at the very first statement (an Debug.Assert line) in the very first class in a library project that doesn't need System.Windows.Forms (or so I thought). I know how to solve it: add the mentioned reference. But how do I find out what library is causing this error, or better, what part of the code triggers using the WinForms library? Normally, you can add libraries that reference others, but you only need to add references to these others when they're actually used. EDIT: Alternative solution This or similar problems can also be resolved using the Binding Log Viewer Fuslogvw.exe from Microsoft's Framework Tools. It shows all attempts and successes of assemblies your application binds to.

  I'm using the new d:DesignInstance feature of the 4.0 series WPF tools. Works great! Only issue I'm having is: how can I set properties on the instance? Given something like this: <Grid d:DataContext="{d:DesignInstance plugin:SamplePendingChangesViewModel, IsDesignTimeCreatable=True}"/> How can I set properties on the viewmodel, aside from setting them in its default ctor or routing it through some other object initializer? I gave this a try but VS gives errors on compile "d:DataContext was not found": <Grid> <d:DataContext> <d:DesignInstance IsDesignTimeCreatable="True"> <plugin:SamplePendingChangesViewModel ActiveTagIndex="2"/> </d:DesignInstance> </d:DataContext> For the moment I'm going back to using a resource and 'd:DataContext={StaticResource SampleData}', where I can set the properties in the resource. Is there a way to do it via a d:DesignInstance?

  Hi, I'm trying to work on a new project parsing some JSON data for a Silverlight 4 project (specifically created as a "Silverlight Business Application - Visual C#" project) using C# in Visual Studio 2010, and I can't find how to include the references to have parsers and native object support for JSON data. As far as I know my development tools are up to date (checked MS update). I know that I can probably just write my own parser but that seems like re-inventing the wheel. Below are some lines that work in VS 2008 in another project of ours (can't post the files due to their being part of a business app): using System.Json; results = (JsonObject)JsonObject.Load(e.Result); I hope my description is adequate. • VS 2010: Can’t insert mvvm-light snippet using shortcut - incompatibility with resharper 5???

  Hi there, i recently installed some snippets that come with the mvvm-light framework i am using. And sure enought i checked via Tools > Code Snippet Manager and they are installed under "My Code Snippets". If i do insert Snipper (right click in code window) or CTRL K + CTRL X then i can search within all available snippets.... But i do believe its possible to just type the shortcut key (in this case it is mvvmlocatorproperty) and pressing tab inserts the snippet BUT when i type the shortcut key it is not recognizing anything... What am i doing wrong?? This is not an incompatibility with resharper 5? - which i have installed Any ideas really appreciated

Is that much different from how we debug in C. theoretically i am quite good in C++ but have never got a chance to debug C++ programs. • Determing software estimates and tracking past estimates

  I know that this probably has as many answers as users here on SO, but software estimation always seemed like an esoteric science. Software developers don't have a magic book to refer to as exist in many other industries. I've been spending the last couple of days working on putting together some estimates for a bit of work that I am proposing for a freelance project that I am working on and am having trouble getting it down. I'm not experienced with any real software estimation practices and am trying to go from the gut based on my experience but also trying to be a little loose (not too loose though) on the estimates to leave me a bit of room to work. I read this blog entry http://blogs.popart.com/2007/07/what-scotty-from-star-trek-can-teach-us-about-managing-expectations/ that was linked to from SO and would like to start tracking my estimates at work as well even though I'm not really required to create estimates there. What tools or techniques would you recommend? Also, how much padding do you usually add in to a time estimate?

Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. at System.Reflection.Module._GetTypesInternal(StackCrawlMark& stackMark) at System.Reflection.Assembly.GetTypes() at Microsoft.Tools.SvcHost.ServiceHostHelper.LoadServiceAssembly(String svcAssemblyPath) There is a suggestion that it might be a configuration error, but I don't see it when comparing to a similar, working example. How do I "Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property" when it happens this early? Thanks!

  Like everyone else ;), I need to test my code on IE6 and IE7. Now IE8 has some great tools for developer, which I'd like to use. I'd also like to start testing my code with IE8, as it will soon be released. The question is: how to run IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine. So far with IE6 and IE7 I've been using Multiple IE. But people have reported (see comments on the page linked in the previous sentence) issue with IE6 after installing IE8. Those errors are related to focus in form fields. Running IE7 wouldn't matter so much as IE8 can use the IE7 rendering engine, but we still need IE6. Any recommendation on how to IE6, IE7, and IE8 on the same machine?

  Here's a message from my eventvwr EventLog (Windows Logs System): The previous system shutdown at 11:51:15 AM on ?7/?29/?2009 was unexpected. This is funny because I was wondering why the system shut down while I was playing Civilizations IV full screen. Now I know. It was unexpected. Has anyone encountered and resolved this? A little background: I am running Windows 7 RC inside VMWare Fusion 2 (just updated a few months back) on a MacBook (Bitterly not Pro) aluminum-body. Windows 7 occasionally will shut down. This isn't a quick turn-off, it's a shutdown where all the programs are exited, the system waits until they quit (and Civ4 doesn't prompt me to save), it even installed Windows Updates before restarting. And yes it is restarting right after the shutdown. Because I run a game in full screen mode I do not notice any dialog with a countdown timer or anything like that that might be a warning. As I have iStat on my dashboard widgets I can see about 8 temperature monitors. I have seen the CPU get up to 74C before, but during the shutdown, though it seemed hot to the touch (always is), it read 61C for the CPU, 60C for heatsink A, 50C for heatsink B and in the 30s-40s for the enclosure and harddrives. As I type this now, the temps are actually higher, so I don't think the temperature caused it. I have at least six such events dating first from 5/17 which was a week after installing Windows 7. I did find one information level warning from USER32 in the system log that says: The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (DLAMBLIN-WIN7) has initiated the restart of computer DLAMBLIN-WIN7 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned) Reason Code: 0x80020002 Shutdown Type: restart Comment: And another 15 minutes before that from Windows Update: Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes: - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB972260) Which I think kind of explains it. Though I don't know why restarting after an update would create an error event of "shutdown was unexpected", isn't that pretty odd? Now, how do I set it to never restart after an update unless I click something. Application of solution: As fretje reminded me, there's a couple of configurable settings for this, in windows 7 they're much in the same place as in Windows 2000 SP3 and XP SP1. Running gpedit.msc pops up a window that looks like: Windows 7 has changed the order and added a couple of newer options I've italicized: Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box Do not adjust default option to 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box Enabling Windows Power Management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates Configure Automatic Updates Specify intranet Microsoft update service location Automatic Updates detection frequency Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications Turn on Software Notifications Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation Turn on recommended updates via Automatic Updates No auto-restart with logged-on users for scheduled Automatic Updates Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations. • Need to open links in new tab in ie8 !

  I have a sidebar (right sided iframe) and when i click on a link in it, it opens a new window in IE8, (in firefox it open a new tab). What do i need to do to open links in IE8 in a new tab. I already set the Tools-Internet Options-Settings- 'Always open pop-ups in a new tab' and 'A new tab in the current window' open in new tab but still doesn't work. My links are pretty simple, what am i missing ? exemple: text. Also some site are saying to register Regsvr32 actxprxy.dll to fix this problem, still doesn't work. And i want this to work with a simple click, no 'right-click-open in new tab' option. I also hope i won't get the 'can't change how ie8 works' answer. ;)

• XenServer 6.0.2 path to installation media contains non-ascii characters

  XenServer 6.0.2 install fails no matter what I do. I have confirmed that the md5 checksum on my ISO file is good. I tried installing from a mounted ISO file (remotely via iKVM). I tried installing from physical media. I tried installing from a bootable USB stick (using syslinux + contents of the ISO) All attempts have yielded the same result: When verifying the installation media, at 0% initializing, the following is reported: "Some packages appeared to be damaged." followed by a list of pretty much all the gz2 and rpm packages. If I skip the media verification the installer proceeds and then gives me an error when it reaches "Installing from base pack" at 0% which states "An unrecoverable error has occurred. The error was: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xff in position 20710: ordinal not in range(128) Please refer to your user guide, or contact a Technical Support Representative, for further details" there is one option left which is to reboot. Apparently at some point during the processing of the repositories on the installation media non-ascii characters are found, which causes the installer to quit. How do I fix this? Here are my specs TYAN S8236 motherboard 2 AMD Opteron 6234 processors LSI2008 card connected to 2 1TB Seagate Constellation drives SATA, 1 500GB Corsair m4 SSD SATA and 1 Corsair Forse 3 - 64GB SSD SATA Onboard SATA connected to a slim DVD-+RW. And guess what, the .py extention of the file you have to edit in this link community.spiceworks.com/how_to/show/1168 means the installer is written in python. Python is interpreted, so now to find the install file responsible for this error. – cmaduro 6 hours ago The file that generates the error upon verification is /opt/xensource/installer/tui/repo.py. The error message appears around line 359. – cmaduro 2 hours ago I am fairly sure that the install error is generated somewhere in repository.py as the backend.py file throws errors while methods in that file are being called.   What is the difference between DVCS systems? Seriously, wikipedia doesn't cover it well, and I read an article on HN recently comparing git and bzr in some detail, but the author admitted knowing little about mercurial, and the other options didn't get mentioned. (I'm happily using fossil on small win/mac/Linux projects) Please restrict answers to the DVCS aspects of the tool, e.g. The basic unit of vc in hit is the repository- in bazaar it is the branch(http://unspecified.wordpress.com/2010/03/26/why-git-aint-better-than-x/). bugtrackers and wikis are nice, but I'm really interested in the tools themselves, rather than any extras. Unfortunately SO demands a single 'right answer', so I'm making the question community wiki in the hope that users will contribute their knowledge.

• Hosted Mac OS X/iPhone development

  I want to try my hand at developing for the iPhone but I don't have an Intel-based Mac available to me; likewise, my budget doesn't include provisions for getting one anytime soon. I've tried messing around with winchain and that hasn't gone too well. I'm not interested in jail-breaking my phone and installing other tools for developing. I've read posts on using older macs with the development tool-kit but haven't tried it yet. In the end I just want to know I can compile without doing a ton of extra work or finding work-arounds. I don't mind only having access to a CLI compiler. Does anyone know of a hosting service that provides a shell access account on Intel-based Mac OS X machines?

• Where is the .NET Framework Global Assembly Cache?

  Hi, I installed the VS2010 and .NET 4.0, then I compiled an assembly and ran the gacutil using the exe available on %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Bin\NETFX 4.0 Tools The output of the executable said the assembly was sucessfully installed on Global Assembly Cache. However, when I go to %WINDIR%\assembly folder I cannot find the assembly I installed using the .NET Framework 4.0 gacutil. I've seen some posts saying the .NET Framework 4.0 has a separated GAC, but what I haven't found was where it is located. May someone to help me to check where can I see the Global Assembly Cache of .NET Framework, as it used to work on previous version (%WINDIR%\assembly)?
