  • How to use Massren with Vim?

    - by Remonn
I want to use massren renamer in vim in order to rename files within the texteditor. First, I used this command within Vim to set Vim as default editor for massren :! c:\tools\massren_renamer\massren.exe --config editor "C:\Progra~2\Vim\vim74\gvim.exe --remote-silent-tab" Then I tried to change a number of text files with this command within Vim: :%! c:\tools\massren_renamer\massren.exe d:\t*.txt but the list of files doesn't open at all in Vim. What did I wrong?

  • Episode by episode DVD Rip to AVI on Windows 7.

    - by ProfKaos
I'm looking for a Windows tool to rip DVD files to AVI files. VidCode looks cool, but it wants to convert the whole DVD (all files in the VIDEO_TS folder) to one AVI. I would like to pull each episode on the DVD to its own AVI. Is their a way to that with VidCode, or another ripper? My Plan B for VidCode is to manually separate files for each episode into their own VIDEO_TS folders. Is this possible? Is there an easy, lazy way to automate this?

  • What is the best drive cleaner?

    - by allindal
What is the best drive "cleaner" application, an application that deletes roaming, temp. and different useless caches. Something similar to CCleaner, but more powerful. I need it to delete more than the basic stuff. Like duplications of complex files or redundancies, (example... for every game there's the DirectX suite) without deleting program essential files, obviously. I know most of this has to do with my selection of these programs, but I haven't seen anything that lets me select types of files to delete, not just specific files.

  • Is there a Distributed SAN/Storage System out there?

    - by Joel Coel
Like many other places, we ask our users not to save files to their local machines. Instead, we encourage that they be put on a file server so that others (with appropriate permissions) can use them and that the files are backed up properly. The result of this is that most users have large hard drives that are sitting mainly empty. It's 2010 now. Surely there is a system out there that lets you turn that empty space into a virtual SAN or document library? What I envision is a client program that is pushed out to users' PCs that coordinates with a central server. The server looks to users just like a normal file server, but instead of keeping entire file contents it merely keeps a record of where those files can be found among various user PCs. It then coordinates with the right clients to serve up file requests. The client software would be able to respond to such requests directly, as well as be smart enough to cache recent files locally. For redundancy the server could make sure files are copied to multiple PCs, perhaps allowing you to define groups in different locations so that an instance of the entire repository lives in each group to protect against a disaster in one building taking down everything else. Obviously you wouldn't point your database server here, but for simpler things I see several advantages: Files can often be transferred from a nearer machine. Disk space grows automatically as your company does. Should ultimately be cheaper, as you don't need to keep a separate set of disks I can see a few downsides as well: Occasional degradation of user pc performance, if the machine has to serve or accept a large file transfer during a busy period. Writes have to be propogated around the network several times (though I suspect this isn't really much of a problem, as reading happens in most places more than writing) Still need a way to send a complete copy of the data offsite occasionally, and this would make it very hard to do differentials Think of this like a cloud storage system that lives entirely within your corporate LAN and makes use of your existing user equipment. Our old main file server is due for retirement in about 2 years, and I'm looking into replacing it with a small SAN. I'm thinking something like this would be a better fit. As a school, we have a couple computer labs I can leave running that would be perfect for adding a little extra redundancy to the system. Unfortunately, the closest thing I can find is Dienst, and it's just a paper that dates back to 1994. Am I just using the wrong buzzwords in my searches, or does this really not exist? If not, is there a big downside that I'm missing?

  • Where should my application setup put the binary executables in Windows 7?

    - by KeyboardMonkey
I created a small Windows app, and am builder a setup for it using NSIS, but what I can't find out is where to put the executables to conform to the new Windows security model. Traditionally we put program files in, well, "c:\program files". With the security model getting more mangled with each Windows version, some users have restricted accounts, and I'm not sure installing into program files will work for these users. Where can I install my program's files that will cater for these lower-privileged users? Oh and I want to avoid ClickOnce.

  • Windows: How to add batch-script action to Right Click menu

    - by ervingsb
I have a few programs that creates temp files or backup files or similar files that are not important. For example, GVim for Windows by default creates a backup file in filename.txt~. I sometimes need to clean up a dir and remove all these files. I have made a simple .bat file for this. However, it is cumbersome to have to start up cmd, navigate to the folder, run the script. Especially since this is a script that I would like to run often on various folders. And I do not want to copy the script to multiple folders, as this would be a maintenance nightmare. So, I was thinking, that the best solution would be to add a Right Click menu item that allows me to run the script. So that I can right click on a folder in Explorer and click Cleanup and then have my script run on this folder. So my question is: How do I add a right click menu action that runs a custom batch script?

  • command line find/replace help

    - by Chrisbloom7
I've got a set of 5000+ files that I need to do a simple search and replace in. I have been doing it in a text editor (EditPlus) by opening 500 files at a time, doing a global search/replace, saving all, closing, etc. But, that's taking literally hours to do and it's boring and tedious and I already have done it once today and need to do it again because all the files got refreshed. Is there a way to do this via the Bash command line? Here's the details: Find onchange="document.location ='/products/view.html/view/'+this.value" Replace it with onchange="alert('Not implemented')" style="display: none" All of the files have a .HTM extension, but they are nested in several sub directories.

  • Windows Web Server in DataCenter Authenticate with AD in Office

    - by Viper Venom
Hi, We would like to have put a File Server in DataCentre to allow user to upload/download files when they are home. Since we have hundreds of users and would like to let the user to authenticate with the existing AD in our office. Basically, I will setup the IIS server to allow users to list various directories in the File Server based on their user group. For example, Group A will have list the D:\Files\A and the Group B will have list the D:\Files\B ...etc. After some initial study, I found that the PPTP based Site to Site VPN might fit our need to do the authentication part but I still don't have any idea on how to let them upload files to the server. Is there any suggestions such as any better option to do this (either authentication or upload part) or any area I need to be careful of? Thank you in advance.

  • Migrating Windows Server 2003 installation to new hardware

    - by Alex
I have a Windows 2003 Server that I want to migrate to new hardware. All the setup and configuration was done by my predecessor. Right now I'm in a real time crunch and I just want to copy all the files and settings to the new machine. Is there an easy way to do this or do I need to manually copy all the files and add all the settings? Microsoft KB suggests "Automated System Recovery", is this the best way forward?

  • Navicat Premium Essentials - Mac OS Maverick

    - by Alberto Schiariti
Do anyone know why since Maverick update, Navicat can't connect anymore to any database which is saved into "/Users/Username" folder? It keeps saying: "Database file path is not correct". If I copy/paste the same DB in any other folder it connects perfectly. I need to open DBs in that folder because that's the folder where Xcode put the Apps ones and I can't everytime I need to modify them, copy/paste them on my desktop and then put them back again.

  • Industrial strength cloud file storage

    - by ArthurG
I'm looking for an industrial strength cloud file storage system. It will be used by multiple people in a startup. Our requirements: Transparent file system access: files and folders in the file system must be able transparently access (read and write) files in the cloud; files must be synchronized whenever network access is available and buffered otherwise. The system must be usable by non-technical people. Access control: we need to control who can access which files, at least on a very coarse basis. e.g., the developers will be able to access the system design documents, only the corporate folks can access recruiting documents, and only management can access certain corporate documents. Dropbox provides this via Sharing folders, but that's not adequate, if I understand it correctly, because there's no authentication of the sharing user. so the cloud service should have a notion of an account (our startup) with multiple users with distinct credentials and rights for each user Clients: it must be accessible from Macs and PCs; I would hope that it supports Linux (e.g., Ubuntu) too Security: it must provide robust security Backup: the cloud service must reliably backup the files Versioning: change version history, is a big plus, but not required Not free: we're willing to pay for the service So far, we've reviewed the following, albeit not completely thoroughly: Dropbox: has all except 1) Access control, which is provided via Sharing folders, but that's not adequate, if I understand it correctly, because there's no authentication of the sharing user. and 2) Security, as discussed here http://www.economist.com/blogs/babbage/2011/05/internet_security and here http://blog.dropbox.com/?p=821. Windows Live Mesh, has all except 1) Clients, only supporting Windows 7 and OS X. SpiderOak has all, except 1) Transparent file system access, which is only available for 1 user. Amazon Cloud, doesn't offer 1) Transparent file system access Rackspace Cloud Drive has all except 1) Access control and 2) Versioning I'll gladly include any clarifications or additional systems the community provides. • application that copies all links in a web page

    - by user23950
I have to download something and those 100+ links to megaupload are all in the same webpage. Do you know of a better way of copying those links instead of copy and pasting them one by one? So that it will accumulate all the links, or portion of the links that I want to get and copy it all in the clipboard then just paste it on the download manager. For windows xp or 7

  • Server not accepting uploads

    - by Tatu Ulmanen
I'm having a strange problem with my VPS: I can download files from it, I can use PuTTy to connect to it and all behaves normally. But sometimes, when I try to upload a file to the server or save a file via SFTP, the connection inexplicably fails. I am using jEdit to edit files remotely via SFTP. When it works, it works fine. When it doesn't, I get an error message: Cannot save: java.io.IOException: inputstream is closed Cannot save: java.io.IOException: 4: I can see that a temporary save file (#file.php#save#) is created on the server with a filesize of 0. So the connection works, but when it comes to sending the actual data, something fails. The same thing with WinSCP, but the error is different: Copying file fatally failed. Copying files to remote side failed. And I can always browse the server with PuTTy without a problem. I see nothing abnormal in any log files. Auth.log shows this when I try to save: sshd[32638]: Accepted password for - from - port 62272 ssh2 sshd[32638]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session opened for user - by (uid=0) sshd[32640]: subsystem request for sftp sshd[32638]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session closed for user - When I wait for a while (say, an hour), everything works fine again. It can't be a temporary ban, as I am still allowed to connect to the server, right? I know this may not be enough info to solve the problem, but I am grateful for any clues or bits of information that might help me. What are the possible causes for this kind of behaviour, what log files can I check for clues etc.. I'm running out of ideas!

  • I need a few minutes of dedicated server a week, but not for hosting, just to convert ogg etc

    - by talkingnews
I'm completely happy with my webhosting, it's just that I need to do one little thing they won't allow, and that's run an instance of Sox to convert about 30 mp3s to ogg files, in various directories, a couple of times a week, to be done automatically in response to the detection of the upload of an mp3. Probably looking at a minute of server time over the whole week. I've had unhelpful suggestions on other forums like "why not leave your home PC on 24 hours a day and then use all your isp bandwidth to do this", which doesn't work for me. I know that I can host files on, say, Amazon S3, but is there something similar for my needs? All it would need to do would be: wget/ftp the mp3 files, convert them to ogg, ftp the files back to my hosting. Of course, all this wouldn't be needed if there was such a thing as a compiled binary of Sox (or any mp3ogg converter) for Centos which I could upload without needing root access, but I've given up asking that one, but always open to suggestions!

  • Run disk error check on NTFS file?

    - by paulius_l
I have a feeling that my system hard drive is dying. Benchmark kind of enforces it. Here is the benchmark of my system hard drive during low system activity: And here is the benchmark of backup drive: Furthermore, there are some files which I just can't touch because I get CRC errors and the hard drive activity spikes to 100% with operating speeds less than 1 MB/s while working with such files. I haven't yet tried swapping SATA cable as I have read this might cause the problems. Anyway, I would like to run some tests on specific clustsers where those files I am interested in are stored. I don't want to do the full chkdsk because it takes a very long time. I would like to either find the utility which executes the disk check directly on the clusters where the file belongs or a couple utilities where one tells me the cluster locations and another can check just those locations. How do I check and possibly fix disk errors where the files I am interested in are stored? Edit: S.M.A.R.T. info:

  • restore -A usage

    - by Martin v. Löwis
I have created a number of dump files using Linux dump(8), using the -A option to get a table of contents on disk (the backups are on tape). Now I'm trying to look into these archive files, using restore -i -A <archive>` However, this insists on asking what tape to use, and complains if I say none. What am I doing incorrectly? I was hoping that I can use these archive index files without having to insert the tape to use.

  • Temporary user-profiles on Windows Server 2008 TS

    - by sinni800
Hello, for a publicly accessible terminal server I have created a user profile which only allows running of a few programs (demonstration of applications). This results in many people connecting to the same user name on the server, essentially sharing the same profile. How can I copy the original, empty profile on every logon to a seperate directory and delete it afterwards, so everybody starts with a clean copy of the "Guest"-Account?

  • Can a USB/IDE/SATA adapter be flaky?

    - by Ward
I use USB/IDE/SATA converters a lot and on the two that I have now, I sometimes get errors copying files to drives. It only happens when I'm copying big files to the drive (big can mean as little as 100MB, I think it happens more often with bigger files - 300MB or more), and basically the copy will fail and I'll get one or more error messages about "Delayed write failed." But if I disconnect the drive and re-connect it, I'll usually be able to continue. (The file that was being copied will be corrupt, but otherwise the drive is fine.) I just noticed a new type of flakiness: the data transfer rate can vary widely. I copied one set of files (5x300MB files) and it took 10+minutes, then I copied another set (approx. the same sizes) and it took less than a minute. I haven't done systematic testing, the other things I'm doing on my laptop at the same time might have some impact, and I haven't cross-checked the two adapters I have and the 3 hard drives I'm working with to see if there's a pattern. I'm more wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this.

  • Xcopy batch file behavior

    - by piagetblix
I have the following backup batch file: xcopy C:\test.txt \server\Data\user\"data test" /e /y /i The issue is why does it not only copy the file listed but proceeds to copy the whole root directory? When i remove the switches it only copies the file. There is nothing in the description of those switches that seems to cause the behavior... They are there because I'm picking up where someone else left and all the batch files use these 3 switches. Thanks

  • Discrepancy in file size on disk and ls output

    - by smokinguns
I have a script that checks for gzipped file sizes greater than 1MB and outputs files along with their sizes as a report. This is the code: myReport=`ls -ltrh "$somePath" | egrep '\.gz$' | awk '{print $9,"=>",$5}'` # Count files that exceed 1MB oversizeFiles=`find "$somePath" -maxdepth 1 -size +1M -iname "*.gz" -print0 | xargs -0 ls -lh | wc -l` if [ $oversizeFiles -eq 0 ];then status="PASS" else status="CHECK FAILED. FOUND FILES GREATER THAN 1MB" fi echo -e $status"\n"$myReport The problem is that ls command outputs the files sizes as 1.0MB in the report but the status is "FAIL" as "$oversizeFiles" variable's value is 2. I checked the file sizes on disk and 2 files are 1.1MB. Why this discrepancy? How should I modify the script so that I can generate an accurate report? BTW, I'm on a Mac. Here is what man page for "find" says on my Mac OSX: -size n[ckMGTP] True if the file's size, rounded up, in 512-byte blocks is n. If n is followed by a c,then the primary is true if the file's size is n bytes (characters). Similarly if n is followed by a scale indicator then the file's size is compared to n scaled as: k kilobytes (1024 bytes) M megabytes (1024 kilobytes) G gigabytes (1024 megabytes) T terabytes (1024 gigabytes) P petabytes (1024 terabytes)

  • rpmbuild gives seg fault

    - by Deepti Jain
I am trying to build an rpm using the rpmbuild tool. I have source code which build binaries around 30 GB. This software for which I am making the rpm has dozens of executables. When I copy only the binaries of a single executable (Eg. init) my rpm builds successfully. But when I dump the entire build to the rpm, rpmbuild does everything but gives a seg fault in the end. Here is my spec file: # This is a sample spec file for wget %define _topdir /root/mywget %define name source %define release 1 %define version 1.12 %define _builddir /root/mywget/BUILD/glenlivet %define _buildrootdir /root/mywget/BUILDROOT %define _buildroot /root/mywget/BUILDROOT %define _sourcedir /root/mywget/SOURCES BuildRoot: %{_buildroot} Summary: GNU source License: GPL Name: %{name} Version: %{version} Release: %{release} Source: %{name}-%{version}.tar.gz Prefix: /usr Group: Development/Tools %description The GNU sample program downloads files from the Internet using the command-line. %prep %setup -q -n glenlivet %build cd %{_builddir} make all %install rm -rf %{_buildrootdir} mkdir -p %{_buildrootdir}/bin cp -p -r %{_builddir}/build/obj-x64/* %{_buildrootdir}/bin/ %files %defattr(-,root,root) /bin/* If I only copy some of the binaries (let say one utility and its dependent binaries) it works fine. But when I try to copy the entire build, I get a seg fault. I get the seg fault after rpmbuild has executed these sections: %prep %build %install rpmbuild also processes my source file. • chroot for unsecure programs execution

    - by attwad
Hi, I have never set-up a chroot-jailed environment before and I am afraid I need some help to do it well. To explain shortly what this is all about: I have a webserver to which users send python scripts to process various files that are stored on the server (the system is for Research purpose). Everyday a cron job starts the execution of the uploaded scripts via a command of this kind: /usr/bin/python script_file.py All of this is really insecure and I would like to create a jail in which I would copy the necessary files (uploaded scripts, files to process, python binary and dependencies). I already looked at various utilities to create jails but none of them seemed up-to-date or were lacking solid documentation (ie. the links proposed in How can I run an untrusted python script) Could anyone guide me to a viable solution to my problem? like a working example of a script that creates a jail, put some files in it and executes a python script? Thank you very much.
