• Is it a good idea to take onsite/offsite backups of server images?

  Assuming a non-virtualized environment it a good idea to take actual images of servers (using something like Acronis True Image) and store them on\off site? Backing up data is great but I feel it would be good to have copies of OS images in the event hardware dies or an upgrade gets botched I can always revert back. What would be your recommended way to do this (preferably using a NAS and an online backup service)? I was talking with the Iron Mountain folks and the service they described is more geared toward taking incremental snapshots of data. I'm not sure if there's a way to backup images in an incremental way such that only the changes between them are saved (that way I'm not wasting X GB each time I take an image).

• Utility for notifying a user that their roaming profile is getting too large to copy before shutdown?

  My users are having an issue with their roaming profiles getting too large and then their roaming profile is lost. I believe this is because this is because they are storing too much in their roaming profiles. Is there a program that can be installed in Windows, that will: Listen for a logoff event Check the size of their Roaming Profile against a size limit I set... If the roaming profile is too big, it will notify the user that they have to decrease the size of the profile. Does a program like this exist or does it need to written?

• Offsite Backup

  There was a recent weather event in the United States that seriously impacted our power grid and our physical well being. Lots of businesses found that they couldn’t get to their building or that their building was gone. Many of them got to do a full test of their disaster recovery processes. A big part of DR is having the ability to get yourself back online in a different location. Now, most of us are not going to be paying for multiple sites, but, we need the ability to move to one if needed. The best thing you can to start to set this up is have an off-site backup. Want an easy way to automate that? I mean, yeah, you can go to tape or to a portable drive (much more likely these days) and then carry that home, but we’ve all got access to offsite storage these days, SkyDrive, DropBox, S3, etc. How about just backing up to there? • Possible causes for Domain server being unavailable?

  One of our servers was compromised after a user with administrative privileges accidentally loaded a virus from a USB drive on a desktop connected to the domain. The two most obvious symptoms of this were: The server is no longer responding to login attempts The root directory of the drive containing user data has been filled with randomly named empty folders. (Initially it was around a million folders, I've been slowly deleting them.) I've run several virus scans from different vendors and am fairly confident the virus has been removed but the damage is done. I'm hoping the two symptoms are related and that once the directories are gone the server will start responding again. The drive is very slow to respond. I'm deleting about 20k folders at a time. Anymore than that and windows explorer becomes unresponsive. In the event that I finish cleaning up the HD and things don't return to normal what other things can I check?

• Netbeans hard freezes Windows XP, how to debug

  I get this problem about once to twice a day while editing in netbeans. I will be editing some code in Netbeans and I get a hard freeze requiring a full reboot. There hasn't been any correlation with an actual event that I can tell. Sometimes it's when I focus, sometimes while typing, sometimes while clicking on another window. I need to figure out how to track down what's causing the problem, as no error is generated when this happens. No error in Netbeans logs or Windows logs. I've also tried letting it sit to see if it recovers, and it's definitely stuck. I haven't had any problems with other apps running JRE, so I'm thinking it's Netbeans itself. I can't submit a bug report because I can't get a log or any reproduce-able explanation of the problem.

• ASP Fails with 500 Error

  We have a server setup as an IIS box and have some static pages with a few asp pages that handle the form submissions. The asp is really vbscript that sends a CDO message. When moving these pages to the new server the form will not submit, it gives a 500 error and the following shows in Event Viewer: Error: The Template Persistent Cache initialization failed for Application Pool 'DefaultAppPool' because of the following error: Could not create a Disk Cache Sub-directory for the Application Pool. The data may have additional error codes.. I can't seem to find any info on this anywhere... I was thinking it may have something to do with the fact that we created this server from an image of another server. Thanks for your help in advance... Vince

• stsadm farm backup exits with ffffffff

  I have a SP2007 farm that uses stsadm through Scheduled Tasks to run farm backups. It always worked fine, however it ran for a couple of seconds one day and just exited with code ffffffff. Looked at Event Viewer, the Sharepoint logs themselves and nothing unusual happened at the time this job ran. No files were created so an spbackup.log doesn't exist. Searched the net for batch files and STSADM return codes but the error message doesn't even exist. Any other recommended place to look for issues like this?

• Installing a new ASP.NET 4.0 site on a Windows 2008 server.

  I have been specifically requested to blog about getting an ASP.NET 4.0 site working on a Windows 2008 server that has never run a 4.0 web site before. Make sure the 4.0 framework is installed on the server! Patch it will ALL the security patches have been applied. ((for a live server, make sure that you tested the patches on your development server first) You will find the HTTP Log status codes at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943891 - they are very important in understandign the IIS logs) After installing, turn on 4.0, by doing the following: Start the Internet Information Services (IIS Manager) Select the server node in the connections pane. (this is the node above Application Pools, FTP Sites and Server Farms) Double click the ISAPI and CGI Restrictions item in the centre pane You should see 1 or 2 ASP.NET v4.0.30319 entries, select Enable in the Actions pane for all of them. ASP.NET 4.0 should now run! Remeber after creating your new 4.0 ASP.NET site. select the Sites node and find out the Id of it. By default, the IIS logs are at C:\inetpub\logs\LogFiles and if your site is say 21, then the logs will be created in the W3SVC21 sub-directory. The key point about using these logs is that in the event of an error when trying to start the site for the first time, the log will contain the status code and the sub-code. By having the full code and sub-code, set up issues can be resolved in minutes instead of hours.

• WD: UDMA CRC Errors and Reallocated Sector

  I got a WD Caviar Black 1TB (WD1001FALS) and according to SMART, I got: one "Reallocated Sector" one "Reallocated Event" 26 UDMA CRC Errors in my drive but it's a "Pass" for the "SMART overall-health self assessment test". I think it's because of these, I'm having problems with Grub, and thus can't boot into any OS at all. Are these problems serious? According to "Warranty Services", my drive is still "In Limited Warranty". Would I be eligible for a replacement? FYI: I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

• Windows 2003 Server Suddenly Drops Connections to everything but PING and port 80 (webserver)

  Hi, I'm running a Windows 2003 Dedicated server, and the box has been rock solid for more than 2 years now. Just recently, I have had an issue where after a certain ammount of time the server will just stop accepting connections on all ports except 80, and still responds to pings. If you surf to a static HTML page on the box, you can display it. If you pull up a PHP file that has an outside database connection, it fails. RDP refuses to connect, and LogMeIn reports that "The connection was reset" The only fix at this time is to have the provider physically reboot my box to correct the issue. The event log doesn't seem to be leaving helpful messages, and I am at a lost to what is causing this error since I have not installed any new software in months on it. Any tips or help would be appreciated to tracking down this issue. I don't mind updating the question as responses come in, I just do not know where to start troubleshooting because it seems random at this time.

• XP Laptop Restarting

  I have a Dell 1525 which I reinstalled xp on recently due to a hard disk problem. Apparently I've missed something, it's taken to restarting for no apparent reason (I believe it's too frequent for windows updates which was my first thought). Last night it was particularly bad, it stopped 5 times in 2 hours while playing an online game. I can't actually think of a time it's happened when it's not running something in full screen mode. I can't see anything in the event log apart from usual start up details. How can I find and fix this issue?

• How to detect an iPhone connecting a network?

  I've noticed through watching Wireshark that when an iPhone connects to a wifi network, it sends out a few IGMP/MDNS packets to 224.0.0.251 (LAN broadcast, I think). Is there any easy way to watch for these packets and then either run a script or send an event? Or, is the best way to just run a packet sniffer? Any simple ones that can send events or execute curl commands when a filter is triggered? When I run nc -u -l 5353 I get: My-Name-iPhonelocal??? x???)?? ??cc^C Can I do something like: nc -u -l 5353 | grep iPhonelocal | execute command...

• Receiving a notification on a Cluster Group Failover

  Hi all, I have several Windows Cluster set up and I have the need of keeping track of failovers. I'd need to receive a notification of sort whenever a group fails over. I've seen some examples around, but I can't rely on the approach of just sending a message whenever the resources are stopped/restarted as it would generate too many false alarms. In few words, I need to be notified if and only if the group really fails over. I was thinking that probably the best way is monitoring the System Event Log, but, if possible, I'd prefer not having to write a script/program from scratch for this issue. Is there any script/product that already does it? Thanks.

• How to pass dynamic information between a form and a service? [closed]

  I have a design problem and hopefully the braintrust which is stack exchange can help. I have a generic form, which loads a dataset and displays it. It never has direct knowledge of what it contains but can pass it to a service for manipulation (via an Onclick event for example). However, the form might need to alter its behaviour based on the manipulation by the service. Example: The service realises this dataset requires sending of an email by the user and needs to send an instruction to the form to open up a mail form. My idea is thus: I'm thinking about passing back some type of key/name dictionary, filled with commands which the service requires. They could then be interpeted by the form without it need to reference something specific. Example: IF the service decides that the dataset needs to refresh it would send back a key/name pair, I might even be able to chain commands. Refreshing the dataset and sending a mail. Refresh / "Foo" Mail / "[email protected]" The form would reference an action explicitly (Refresh or Mail) but not the instructions themselves. Is this a valid idea or am I wasting time?

• Subscript/Superscript Hotkey for Excel 2010 Macro?

  Background In Excel 2010, for some ridiculous reason, there is no built-in hotkey (or even a button on the toolbar) for subscripting/superscripting text within a text cell. You can, however, highlight the text, right-click the selection, click format, and then check the [x] subscript or [x] superscript checkbox. Question Are there any kinds of excel macros or workarounds to map two keyboard hotkeys to the subscript and superscript keys, respectively? (It should only be, like, two lines of code - one for the event handler and one for the actual procedure call... I would write one myself but my VBA is rusty, at best, and I am pretty confident there is probably already some kind of solution, despite my inability to find one via search engine) Thanks for any help you can provide!

• What is involved with writing a lobby server?

  So I'm writing a Chess matchmaking system based on a Lobby view with gaming rooms, general chat etc. So far I have a working prototype but I have big doubts regarding some things I did with the server. Writing a gaming lobby server is a new programming experience to me and so I don't have a clear nor precise programming model for it. I also couldn't find a paper that describes how it should work. I ordered "Java Network Programming 3rd edition" from Amazon and still waiting for shipment, hopefully I'll find some useful examples/information in this book. Meanwhile, I'd like to gather your opinions and see how you would handle some things so I can learn how to write a server correctly. Here are a few questions off the top of my head: (may be more will come) First, let's define what a server does. It's primary functionality is to hold TCP connections with clients, listen to the events they generate and dispatch them to the other players. But is there more to it than that? Should I use one thread per client? If so, 300 clients = 300 threads. Isn't that too much? What hardware is needed to support that? And how much bandwidth does a lobby consume then approx? What kind of data structure should be used to hold the clients' sockets? How do you protect it from concurrent modification (eg. a player enters or exists the lobby) when iterating through it to dispatch an event without hurting throughput? Is ConcurrentHashMap the correct answer here, or are there some techniques I should know? When a user enters the lobby, what mechanism would you use to transfer the state of the lobby to him? • How to verify if my copy operation is complete in Windows 7?

  Yesterday, I was leaving some job of copying a directory to run overnight. This morning however, I found the computer had restarted because of Windows Update or something. I was wondering if there is some way to check if the copy is complete? One way I guess would be check the last modified time of the copy, and when the system restarted. But I was wondering where to find the time when the system restarted? I was also wondering if where to find some logging files that have the records. I know Event Viewer, but don't know where to find within it. Other methods are welcome too. I also would like to hear suggestions for other ways to accomplish the copy instead of just simple copy and paste. Thanks and regards!

• Directory Synchronization

  We’re using federated security with Office 365 and everything was running swimmingly and then I started getting the following error when trying to synchronize security information: “An unknown error occurred with the Microsoft Online Services Sign-in Assistant. Contact Technical Support.” Great.  Very descriptive.  In the event viewer, you get a bit more detail: GetAuthState() failed with -2147186688 state. HResult:0. Contact Technical Support.  (0x80048831) If you do some searching, you’ll find that there are a couple of MSDN articles about this error.  In KB2502710 you’re told to reinstall sign in assistant.  This one requires a reboot.  In KB2517393 you’re told to make sure that your proxy settings are working correctly.  I’m not using a proxy and everything was set up right. Rather frustrating and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.  What finally keyed me in was the error number being presented.  Rather than 80048800, which is listed in the second article, I was getting 80048831.  I did a quick search and found something that was seemingly unrelated here.  Could it really be so simple as the password having expired for my synchronization user? Turns out, it was that simple.  Once the password was reset and reentered, everything worked great again. Since this isn’t a user that humans use, I also don’t want the password to expire.  You can find the instructions for that (use Set-MsolUser –UserPrincipalName <user ID> –PasswordNeverExpires $true) here. • When resizing Windows Explorer on Windows 8 it crashes?

  I have following problem: When I try to change size of any explorer window from maximized to some size getting following screen It blinks 20-30 times, then crashes. Also it changes it's size every time into this square size. Here is event viewer result: The program Explorer.EXE version 6.2.9200.16384 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel. • It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over

  Oracle OpenWorld 2012 is behind us. Well, for San Francisco, anyhow. The team is already working on the Latin America event which takes place in December in Sao Paulo, and an OpenWorld in Asia for 2013 as well. And of course they're already working on the next San Francisco OpenWorld for 2013. So what happens after the conference is over? People pack up demo and network gear and ship it out to wherever it's going next; take down and recycle signage; strike the keynote set, the exhibition and demo halls, the street tents, and anything else that was constructed just for the conference. There's a lot of post-conference analyis going on too. Oracle and partner marketing teams are looking at and following up on the leads they got from booth, demo, and lounge traffic. The events team is evaluating the session and conference surveys you filled out if you attended -- looking to identify the best speakers, what worked and didn't work, how you liked the venues, the food, the entertainment, the presentations. From all of that information will come recommendations for next year on what to keep doing, what to do better, and what not to do at all. The goal for each year's conference is to be better than last year's. • UNC access to TFS SharePoint doesn't work

  We are using TFS2010 with the SharePoint document portal. We are trying to access the files in SharePoint using UNC paths (e.g. \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject) and it just plain doesn't work. From my workstation, I actually get different behaviours depending on the path. Case 1: Path = \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\ Result: windows explorer reports a network error "Windows cannot access \tfs2010\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\" Case 2: Path = \tfs2010.mycompany.com\sites\DefaultCollection\MyProject\ Result: Windows Security dialog pops up asking for my username and password. I tried entering all combinations of my windows username and password (with and without the domain before the username), but no matter what, my credentials are not accepted. I have no problems accessing the SharePoint site through the web portal - it's just UNC which doesn't work. There doesn't seem to be anything relevant in the event viewer on the server. Anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

• Ubuntu 12.04 dual monitor reset bug

  My two displays are: Intel GMA x4500 Laptop (1280x800 native resolution of the built-in display) External display (1920x1080) Few minutes after I login to my dual monitor setup its get reset to mirror screens. If I restore the settings via displays application everything is fine. • Using remote station as original

  I have 2 computers with totally same Debian, config, apps and other stuff. One at work and another at home. It's inconvenient to maintain the same configuration on these stations - upgrading OS, sync configuration, etc. Is there the way to use my home station as "host", and such a "terminal" at work? As if i have one HDD on 2 computers, but must use they own resources like an videocard and another. Looks like i need some remote tool as VNC, but this is no sessional event, I need to use "terminal" comp like original all of the time.
