• Power cycles on/off 3 times before booting properly from cold start, no other issues (New System)

  Relevant Specs: Sapphire 5850, core i7 920, Seasonic x750 power supply, ECS X58B-A2 mobo. From a cold boot, meaning all power totally disconnected at the wall, the system will power on for less than a second and then power off completely. After two seconds of being powered off this will repeat and on the third "attempt" the computer will boot. To be very specific here is what happens: The power is turned on at the wall and on the psu, the orange stdby LED on the mobo is illuminated but the system is 'off'. I hit the power button on the case or on the mobo itself I hear the relay (?) in the psu closing The case light comes on and the mobo power light comes on. The fans start rotating. Immediately after this the I hear some relay click - the power lights extinguish, the fans stop, the stdby light remains on. Less than 2 seconds pass and the cycle repeats without any intervention from me. On the third attempt it boots normally and the machine runs perfectly. If I do a soft reboot or a full shutdown the computer starts normally the next time. It's only if I pull the power cord or flick the switch off on the PSU that I get the cycling again. Basically any time the stdby light on the mobo goes out. I have removed the graphics card and I get the same problem. I have removed the PSU, hotwired it to the ON position and verified voltages on all lines. The relay does not cycle when I do this. If I connect only the 24 pin ATX connector to the mobo and not the 8 pin ATX12V / CPU connector then I will not get the cycling, the fans run, the power light stays on, but obviously the system can't boot. Disconnecting all fans has no effect on the problem. My feeling it that it's something to do with the motherboard like a capacitor that's taking a long time to charge because it's leaking or something along those lines. But I can't imagine what could be 'wrong' with it and only manifest itself as a problem under these very specific circumstances. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Bugzilla with SSL

  I have an install of Bugzilla I'm trying to implement SSL on. When I go into the parameters screen and edit SSLBASE adding in the full url: https://foo.com/bugzilla/ the editparams.cgi times out on loading and I have the following error in the apache log [Tue Mar 30 19:29:39 2010] [error] [client xxx.xx.xx.xx ] (70007)The timeout specified has expired: ap_content_length_filter: apr_bucket_read() failed, referer: http://foo.com/bugzilla/editparams.cgi On install I also received this error: WARNING: You need to set the max_allowed_packet parameter in your MySQL configuration to at least 3276750. Currently it is set to 3275776. You can set this parameter in the [mysqld] section of your MySQL configuration file. How can I force this to work? Editing other parameters (eg urlbase) work fine. The SSL site is setup and direct requests to it eg https://foo.com/bugzilla work correctly. Any ideas? Ty

• How much effort is SQL Server 2008 Administration?

  Hi, I am looking for a suitable hosting environment for an ASP.NET MVC application. One of the options I have is renting a Hyper-V server and installing my license of SQL Server 2008 on it. I'm a bit wary of shared hosting since the one I have tried so far did not seem to have very consistent performance. One potential problem is that I would have I do not not know much about SQL Server administration, so I am not sure if this is a good option. I've been running a failover cluster of two linux dedicated servers for over 5 years now and MySQL never gave me any trouble. But that was Linux, and it might be different with a windows system. Is running a halfway efficient MS SQL Server 2008 difficult? Does it require any in-depth administration knowledge? Or perhaps recurring administration effort (such as keeping the server up to date with the latest patches)? Or is it rather an "install and forget" experience similar to MySQL?

• High CPU from httpd process

  I am currently getting high CPU on a server that is just running a couple of sites with very low traffic. One of the sites is in still development going live soon. However, this site is very very slow...When browsing through its pages I can see that the CPU goes from 30% to 100% for httpd (see top output below). I have tuned httpd & MySQL, Apache Solr, Tomcat for high performance, and I am using APC. • configuring two network interfaces in ubuntu 10.04.1

  I have got two NICs configured on a VM - each is tied to a specific network, one is a DMZ, the other is an internal network. I want MySQL to listen on the internal network only and Apache on the DMZ listening for HTTP and HTTPS. But as soon as I add the second interface I run into trouble. I can hit HTTP on either interface, but can not hit 3306 on the internal network for MySQL. I was thinking of two options. 1) Install multiple Debian os on top of Xen (like VPS). • Implementing a Linux-HA based clustering setup on Windows

  I have a (tried and tested) setup involving: 2x Load balancing nodes on a floating IP via Heartbeat, load balancing 2 tomcat servers. 2x Tomcat servers 2x Galera Cluster MySQL servers synchronously replicating (+1 arbitrator node) All are evenly spread across 2 physical nodes. Now, I have to somehow get the same functionality on Windows Server (2008? I think) nodes .... running under Xen virtualization. There is no possibility to use Linux for any of the nodes. I count two main problems: No Linux-HA hearbeat daemon for the load balancing No Galera synchronous replication for MySQL I freely admit to having nearly no Windows knowledge when it comes to clustering. Is there a way to closely mimic the setup I have described or is it a total write-off?

• SMPS stops when I plug in a SATA drive?

  Hello, Part 1: my first question is all the 4 wire power connectors (intended for hardisks/dvd drives not mother board) are same. Right? I've been using all of them same and I had no problem for years. Yesterday I borrowed a SATA disk from my friend and connected it my computer using Sata Power adaptor (4 wire) and when I switched on the computer. There were fumes coming out of the connector. I immediately turned it off (in just one second). I tested the voltages in the 4 wire power connector of my SMPS: They were 5.3v & 12.2V. I couldn't measure the current. But my SMPTS label reads: DC Output: 3.3v (25A) +5v (32A) -5v (0.3A) +12V (17A) -12V (0.8A) And the SATA hardisk label reads Input: +5v (0.72A) +12V (0.52A) I'm shocked! I never noticed this. Does the "sata power adaptor" scale down the current to required? If it doesn't, I've been connecting same way for years. I never had any problem. This is the first time I'm encountering it. Part 2: I wanted to return the drive to my friend. He has two hard disks, SATA & PATA. Its the SATA that I borrowed. When he usually switches on. The CPU fan starts & then stops for a sec and starts again and continues working. That was the earlier situation. I don't know why it stops & starts? Well, Now when I connect this SATA disk and switch ON the computer. CPU fan starts (just for an instant, not even a 0.5 sec) and stops. It doesn't start again, I mean the power from SMPS has stopped. But if I disconnect this SATA disk. It works fine. What seems to be the problem? I've no idea about why there were fumes or why his SMPS starts & stops giving power? What is its relation with the SATA disk connection?

  I'm looking for suggestions on mailing list software to use on an existing server running Postfix/Procmail. Something relatively simple. requirements: 1 list, < 50 subscribers list members dumped in a certain file by a script (being pulled from LDAP or MySQL on another box) Handles MIME, images, etc. Moderation features No subscription/unsubscription - just goes by the file or database. Mailman is far too heavy-weight, and doesn't seem to play (easily) with Postfix/Procmail. I'm currently using a PHP script that just receives mail as a user, reads a list of members from a serialized array (file dumped on box via cron on the machine with the MySQL database containing members) and re-mails it to everyone. Unfortunately, we now need moderation capabilities, and I don't quite feel like adding that to the PHP script if there's already something out there that does it. Thanks for any tips. -Jason

• USB ports causing Wireless and Mobile Phone tethering drop out

  I have a problem with my USB ports and I can't seem to pinpoint the problem. I'm hoping that I can get some idea as to how to troubleshoot my problem. Problem description: I recently bought a USB Wireless Adapter in order to connect my Desktop PC to the WLAN. The dongle keeps dropping off connection regularly on average once a minute. And the connection is slow. What I've tried: I installed a network scanner to determine signal strength. The PC/adapter combo is getting about 70% signal strength. I have a laptop that has an internal Wireless adapter. I moved the laptop near the location of the PC. The signal strength was above 90%. I installed the USB adapter on the laptop. I placed the laptop near the location of the PC. The signal strength was above 80%. And there is no drop out issue. I've isolated the problem to be on the PC. I used internet tethering on my mobile phone in order to test the USB ports. I get the same problem, themobile phone keeps dropping in and out. I plugged the adapter and phone on all USB ports, and it is still dropping out on all ports. I've isolated the problem to be the Motherboard, USB hub. I updated the BIOS, and USB driver. Still dropping out. I noticed that when I used the mobile phone tethering method, the phone (iphone 5) is guarenteed to drop out and does not appear to charge if I jiggle the the 8-pin connector on the base of the phone. If I push the pin tightly on the phone, the phone starts charging, as soon as I let go, it stops and drops out from the PC. This is strange because this doesn't happen when it is plugged to the powerboard. Which means that the 8 pin connector is fine. I'm not sure what the problem is. I assume that it is to do with the USB ports not supplying enough power which in turn causes the devices to intermittently drop out. The reason I say this is because the USB cable works fine when plugged into a powerboard with enough power supplied to the phone. Only when it is plugged into the USB port on the PC, does it drop out. My motherboard is Asus P8z68-v le. My Wireless adapter is the D-link DWA131. I can't seem to find any settings in the BIOS to increase the south bridge voltage so as to supply more power to the USB ports. Although this problem only occurs when I'm trying to hook up to a device supplying internet connection. My USB HDD, Flash drives, and Mouse and Key are working fine! Any suggestions please?

• Unable to setup ssh tunnel on mac

  On my office windows XP laptop I use a program called Bitvise Tunnelier to establish ssh tunnel to a in-house MySQL database. In the Tunnelier program I also need to provide address of corporate http proxy server in order to establish tunnel. On my personal mac laptop, I use Cisco Anywhere client to establish a VPN connection to my corporate network. But i'm unable to establish ssh tunnel to mysql database using ssh. How do I specify the proxy server address in the ssh command? As additional info when i'm using office laptop (whether in home or office) I can successfully ping to the server address specified in the Tunnelier program. But i cannot ping the same server using my mac machine (even after connecting via VPN). So basically i'm unable to understand what's going on and what steps i can take to debug this problem .

• ColdFusion Server crash after thousands of HTTP requests

  We are running ColdFusion 8 on a windows server 2003 VPS with an API that exposes student records to a partner API through a connector. Our API returns around 50k student records serialized in XML format pretty seamlessly. My question originates when something very frightening happened today when we tested our connector to our partners API. Our entire website and web host went down. We assumed that our host was just having some issues and after 4 hours with no resolution and no response from their customer service we finally got a response from them claiming that they had an "unauthorized user" in their network. After our server was back up we were unable to connect to our website as if the web service or coldfusion itself had froze. This is really where my concern comes from as I fear we may have overloaded the web service. As I mentioned before we tried sending over 50k HTTP POST requests over to our partner's API, however everything stopped after around 1.6k Is this bad practice or is there some sort of rate limiting I can relax somewhere in server configuration? We managed to find a workaround, but it bypasses our connector which is critical to our design. This would have been a one time deal as the purpose of so many requests was to populate our partner's website with current data, after that hourly syncs will keep requests down to around 100 per hour. UPDATE Our partner API is owned and operated by Pardot. We are converting students to prospects by passing student data to their API which unfortunately only seems to accept one student at a time. For that reason we have to do all 50k requests individually. Our server has 4GB of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.8GHz running Windows Server 2003 SP2. I monitored the server during a 100 student sync, a 400 student sync, and a 1.4k student sync with the following results: 100 students - 2.25GB of Memory, 30-40% CPU utilization, 0.2-0.3% network bandwidth 400 students - 2.30GB of Memory, 30-50% CPU utilization, 0.2-1.0% network bandwidth 1.4k students - 2.30GB of Memory, 30-70% CPU utilization, 0.2-1.0% network bandwidth I know this is a far cry from 50k students, but I don't want to risk taking down our CMS system again assuming that was the cause. I have found this website (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/secure-create-certs.html) to generate the client and server certs for mysql server but the example is a self-signed certificate. I use the following command for running the server and client using openssl and the generated certs and keys: openssl s_server -accept 6502 -cert server-cert.pem -key server-key.pem -CAfile ca-cert.pem -www openssl s_client -connect 192.168.1.92:6502 -cert client-cert.pem -key client-key.pem -CAfile ca-cert.pem The error output I get is "Verify return code: 18 (self signed certificate)".
