• Why isn't the source code of programs shown in research papers released?

  Is there a reason why the source code of programs shown in research papers are not released ? I understand that research papers are more about the general idea of accomplishing something than implementation details, but I don't get why they don't release the code. For example, in this paper ends with: Results The human line drawing system is implemented through the Qt framework in C++ using OpenGL, and runs on a 2.00 GHz Intel dual core processor workstation without any additional hardware assistance. We can interactively draw lines while the system synthesizes the new path and texture. Do they keep the source code closed intentionally because of a monetization they intend to make with it, or because of copyright ?

  I just ordered the Nvidia GTX 560 card, which should arrive tomorrow. I have a dilemma, though. Should I keep using the driver which is available in "additional drivers" in Ubuntu (10.10), or should I install the driver from the nvidia site? • Visual Studio 2010 Setup Projects and x64 Support

  I was taking the Windows Azure CmdLets project and getting it into an MSI just to make it easier to deploy in a nice package.  I ran into problems with the Setup project not being able to properly establish the right registry settings for an x64 environment. Even though you set the target platform on the Setup project to x64 the InstallUtil.lib that get’s run is still x86.  In order to have it work property, you need to follow the steps identified here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/kz0ke5xt.aspx  The section “64-bit managed custom actions throw a System.BadImageFormatException exception” covers the steps you need to follow, using the Orca MSI editor to replace the InstallUtilLib.dll from the one that the Setup Project embeds (x86) to a x64 version. • Need help about Drag a sprite with Animation (Cocos2d)

  I want to play an animation when someone drag a sprite from it's default position to another selected position. If he drag half of the selected position then animation will be play half. Example, I have 15 Frames of a animation and have a projectile arm. The projectile arm can be rotate maximum 30°, if someone rotate the arm 2° then animation sprite will be show 2nd frame, if rotate 12° then animation sprite will be show 6th frame.... and so on. Also when he release the arm, then the arm will be reverse back to it's default position and animation frames also will be reverse back to it's default first frame. I am new on cocos2d.I know how to make an animation and how to drag a sprite but I have no idea how to do this. Can anyone Please give me any idea or any tutorial how to do this, it will be very helpful for me. Thank you in advance.

• Changes to File Store Provider in UCM PS3

  In the recent PS3 release of UCM (11.1.1.4.0) there are some significant changes to the File Store Provider (FSP) configuration. For new PS3 installs (not upgrades from PS2) the FSP default storage rule includes a dispersion rule that will change the web-layout and vault paths by adding dispersion directories to the paths to limit the number of files in the vault and web-layout directories. What that means is that if you install a new PS3 UCM instance and migrate content in from a previous version of UCM the web URL will change. That is a critical problem for web sites and just general document management. • How do you end up with event-sourcing if you use a xDD approach?

  When working in a TDD or BDD manner your unit tests are supposed to drive your design. But how do you end up with event-sourcing using a xDD techniques? As I see it event sourcing is something you need to adopt early on to take full advantage of it. Lets say that you start without event-sourcing and do a release. Later on when you are releasing version 2.0 you realize that it would be great to use event-sourcing, but at that point you alread have missed all the events from version 1.0 so it makes it much harder to implement. Or do you take some kind of backup of your db from before event-sourcing and use that as base line and then add event-sourcing on top of that?

Dean also committed to updating the preview approximately every eight weeks. There is a good article on Beta News covering some of the technical details of the release. • Change from tri-boot to dual-boot

  I have been tri-booting Windows 7, Windows 8 Release Candidate and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for a few months now. I have decided that, since I have no touch screen, I will not purchase Win 8. I now want to get rid of the Win 8 RC, then add that partition space to my Ubuntu partition, but have no idea how to accomplish this. Do I need to uninstall Win 8 RC from within Windows first? The grub loader sends me to the Win 8 loader, where I have Win 7 as the default. Does that complicate things? Any assistance anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

• JSF 2.x's renaissance

  JAXenter's Chris Mayer posted a column last week about the "JavaServer Faces enjoying Java EE renaissance under Oracle's stewardship". This piece discusses the adoption and increased ecosystem (component libraries, tools, runtimes, ...) since the release of JSF 2.0 as well as ongoing work on 2.2. As Cameron Purdy comments, Oracle as a company certainly has vested interest in JSF and will continue to invest in the technology. Specifically for JSF 2.2, and as this other article points out, a lot of the work has to do with alignment with HTML5 (see this example) and making the technology even more mobile-friendly (along with the main Java EE 7 "PaaS" theme of course). Chris' article concludes with "JSF appears to be the answer for highly-interactive Java-centric organisations who were hesitant of making a huge leap to JavaScript, and wanted the best RIA applications at their disposal".

• is gnome 3 is slow or my machine?

  I have Dell XPS 15 i7 - 2360 with nvidia 525M (1GB) with optimus running Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit and have bumblebee installed for optimus. Recently I installed Gnome Shell to give it a try and found it sort of lagging under few scenarios though rest all is butter smooth. When I click on Date gnome 3 it appears as if a second has elapsed before the window is drawn. But others panel items like network or volume looks fine. In gnome 3 when I'm on dash with (window preview) if I remove any of the windows before the remaining windows reshuffle it takes about 2 seconds (noticeable clearly). Everything else is fine in both unity and Gnome Shell. What is causing this slowness? Is Gnome Shell is really slower?

• Good PPA for ffmpeg

  Its annoying that the default ffmpeg in ubuntu's repositories is outdated and hobbled for legal reasons, however, there's a great page on the forums that walks you through building it from scratch: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095 (I also add in support for --enable-libdc1394 --enable-libgsm --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex when I build, which is nice, but not essential.) Anyway, I'm getting set to setup a computer lab running ubuntu for a multimedia class I'm teaching, and I was wondering if there was PPA out there that did something similar to what is available when building from scratch. The things I absolutely need from it are up-to-date libxvid, libx264, libfaac, and libmp3lame support plus the un-encumbered stuff (vorbis, theora, vpx). Is there a PPA out there that provides something like this?

• Copying logins to another server

  I'm busy setting up a new server to replace our main live server and part of that is to get the logins copied over. The database users will come over when I restore the databases but I wanted to get the logins they relate to, with the same SIDs, passwords and other properties as they have on the current server. In fact I don't even know the passwords for the logins created by our Sage accounting package - apparently they are generated by the setup using a number of ingredients unique to each installation. I did some Googling and fount this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918992/, which more or less did the trick. It produces a set of CREATE LOGIN statements with the SIDs and hashed passwords. But it didn't include the default language, which can subtly or dramatically alter the behaviour of date-related SQL. So I added that bit and you can help yourself here.
