• Recovering data from mangodb raw files

  Hi, Long story: My MacBook's hard drive failed one year ago, just a month after its warranty ended or: a year and a month after I bought it. After about ten phone calls to Apple's service, they agreed to extend the warranty for another year, so that I got it replaced free of charge. In the mean time, I got to know that many MacBook users that experience/report hard drive failures. Every reported crash was preceded by a slowdown of system performance, an increased occurrence of the spinning beach ball wait courser, and frequent crashes of applications that used to run very robust until then. It happened (as far as I know) with MacBooks from 2006/2007. All these MacBooks additionally suffer from a recurring wearing down of their "top case". Many heavy users had to replace their HDDs three time since 2006/2007 resulting in an head crash, making it impossible to recover data (diagnosis of recovery specialists) in most but not all cases HDD was Seagate (doesn't necessarily have to be the cause, if majority of the MacBook charge contained Seagate drives) And right now (one year after my first disk crash), these symptoms are cumulating on my system, again ... Short version: prevalent hard drive failure on MacBook charge from 2006/2007 (i.e. 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Due) I am looking for any (preferable open source) tool for checking the hard drive condition, especially to detect the known "MacBook problem". So, that I can replace the disk on time. If any Mac user found a solution to prevent the repeated failure of heir hard drive, I would be very glad to get to known it. I really enjoy my old MacBook, but I hate to get interrupted every year by an HDD crash. BTW, the issue is already in discussion for a long time, but there seems to be no solution, so far. • Understanding Exchange User Monitor (ExMon) Output

  I recently downloaded and ran ExMon while trying to troubleshoot Outlook connectivity problems due to high CPU usage on Exchange Server 2010 SP2 UR8. The tool provides a great set of data, but I have not yet figured out how to make great use of it. My first question is why the Exchange Server itself shows up as a high-use MAPI client in the ExMon data. Among the users' client versions I see build numbers listed for Outlook 2013, 2010, and yes, even 2007 clients. I also see build number 14.2.387.0, which represents Exchange Server 2010 SP2 Update Rollup 8 (+/- some other patch that makes it not quite match the UR8 number). There are many user rows that list only "::1" and/or the short hostname of my Exchange server in the 'Client IP Addresses' column. Some other columns include the end-user's actual IP address and the Exchange server's IP address. ExMon shows that it is actually Exchange Server that is utilizing the highest percentage of CPU that is used for MAPI calls. I had expected to see 1 IP address and version number for each user reported by ExMon. Instead, most records show multiple version #'s (Exchange ver and Outlook ver) and multiple IPs (Exchange IP and client IP). Can anyone explain the reason for this to me, please?

  I am trying to run the following code snippet as part of a tool to gather and log some pertinent system diagnostics. In the second code snipped, I cannot capture stdout. I need to be able to run the batch script with Elevated permissions, so I am looking for a compromise between the functionality of the two. I cannot run the entire calling script in elevated mode due to restrictions from other pieces of functionality. I am looking for any ideas on how to add this output to my log as I am running out of options that are within the scope of basic scripts.

  How do I need to format a text file so that it can be read by an SMTP service to send an e-mail that has an attachment? We have a server where we are using II6 SMTP to send mail from a Pickup folder. The goal is to drop a properly formatted text file into Mailroot\Pickup and then the file will be automatically processed and sent to the correct SMTP recipient. For simple files, this works correctly. Here's an example of a simple file that works (domain names changed): From:[email protected] To:[email protected] Subject:Hello World! Test Body Of The E-mail When I drop a text file containing the above contents into the Mailroot\Pickup folder, it sends correctly. However, I haven't been able to figure out how to get an attachment to work. I found some material that explained how to encode an SMTP attachment and another tool for simple base64 encoding conversion. Using the information on those pages, I came up with the following text: From:[email protected] To:[email protected] Subject:Hello World! • Can grub and BCD work simultaneously?

  Here's my setup. After I installed a new SSD, I have: Original Windows 7 on sdc1 (to be retired) Copy of Windows 7 on sdb2 A Windows system partition on sdb1 Ubuntu 12.04 on sda, /boot and ergo grub is on sda1 Grub is MBR on sda and set to boot from BIOS. I prefer to not change this; grub is much preferable as a boot manager. I've run update-grub from Ubuntu and grub seems to be correctly configured as all options are available: I can boot any of the 3 Windows partitions and Ubuntu. I also ran the repair tool to get Windows to add both installations to BCD. At present, choosing particular options seem to have no effect; the old version of Windows on sdc1 always boots. I don't understand what is causing this, but I can't figure out what. How does grub and BCD play along? I can't find any docs on this. My thought was to only boot Windows off sdb1, and then let BCD do the rest (present a menu to boot between sdb2 and sdc1, but I can't seem to get BCD to boot sdb2), but this has been unsuccessful. • TCP: Address already in use exception - possible causes for client port? NO PORT EXHAUSTION

  Hello, stupid problem. I get those from a client connecting to a server. Sadly, the setup is complicated making debugging complex - and we run out of options. The environment: *Client/Server system, both running on the same machine. The client is actually a service doing some database manipulation at specific times. * The cnonection comes from C# going through OleDb to an EasySoft JDBC driver to a custom written JDBC server that then hosts logic in C++. Yeah, compelx - but the third party supplier decided to expose the extension mechanisms for their server through a JDBC interface. Not a lot can be done here ;) The Symptom: At (ir)regular intervals we get a "Address already in use: connect" told from the JDBC driver. They seem to come from one particular service we run. Now, I did read all the stuff about port exhaustion. This is why we have a little tool running now that counts ports and their states every minute. Last time this happened, we had an astonishing 370 ports in use, with the count rising to about 900 AFTER the error. We aleady patched the registry (it is a windows machine) to allow more than the 5000 client ports standard, but even then, we are far far from that limit to start with. Which is why I am asking here. Ayneone an ide what ELSE could cause this? It is a Windows 2003 Server machine, 64 bit. The only other thing I can see that may cause it (but this functionality is supposedly disabled) is Symantec Endpoint Protection that is installed on the server - and being capable of actinc as a firewall, it could possibly intercept network traffic. I dont want to open a can of worms by pointing to Symantec prematurely (if pointing to Symantec can ever be seen as such). So, anyone an idea what else may be the cause? Thanks

• Can I recover a rm -rf-ed Mercurial repository?

  I made the mistake of wiping out my entire project directory with a quick "rm -rf project". Of course, the .hg directory went with it. I had about 15-20 changesets, that I have not pushed to anyone, and I would really really like to get those back. The system is a Ubuntu machine, and the partiton where the delete happened is ext3, the project consist mostly of PHP files. I know about the guideline to not write to the disk in question. The first idea was to use the tool named scalpel, to get the PHP files back and diff them with the current version from the repo, and somehow carve the changes out. While it succeeded, it did not recover the file names (or there is a switch I'm missing), so I'm left with a few thousand sequentially named .php files, combing through them is not an option. Can a kind soul please save me, and suggest a way to: a) get the repo back, or b) get the files back, with filenames For those wondering how I did such a stupid thing: I was working on a file in Vim which I wanted to remove from the repository: :!hg rm % This complained that the file is in a subrepository, so I specified the following: :!hg rm % -R engine which complained that file has modifications, use -f to force. And this is when somehow, I made up the following command: :!rm -rf % -R engine Somehow, seeing "force" makes me do a rm -rf by reflex.

  [Running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit] My new HP Pavilion Elite HPE-450t has been plagued by BSDO crashes since I got it about 5 weeks ago. The crashes are somewhat rare, sometimes not occurring for 3 or 4 days. • no mails routed to/from new Exchange 2010

  I have an Exchange Server 2003 up and running for years. Now I am in the mid of transition to Exchange Server 2010, I already installed it, put the latest Servicepack on it and everything seems fine, BUT: Mails do not get delivered to MailBoxes on the new Exchange 2010. e.g. when I create a new mailbox on the old server, Emails in and out to/from it work like a charm. But as soon as I move it to the new server, emails get stuck. Noe delivered from outside or old mailboxes, not send out from the new server to enywhere. Sending between Mailboxes on the new Server of course is working. I can see the connectors between old and new Server in the Exchange 2003 Admin Tool, but I cannot find these nowhere on the new server. I have also setup sending connectors at the new server to send out mails directly, but that does not work. In all other areas, the servers are perfectly working together - moving mailboxes between, seeing each other etc. "just" they dont exchange (!) any emails - Any ideas what I missed? I also followed the hints from: Upgrading from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, routing works in one direction only There Emails were transported at least in one direction, in my case they are not transported at all. • URL sniffer/downloader

  Some websites have Flash content that plays music or videos. Most of the time they don't show you the URL of these music or videos, but for example, you can sniff a YouTube webpage and find the flv file that YouTube is actually requesting and playing. Right now I'm using Orbit Downloader, which has a feature called Grab++ that does just this; you start it, and then you refresh the page, and it shows you all files of certain types (image, audio, video) that the webpage requests, and then you can select one or more and download and it downloads them. But, I don't like Orbit, it installs plugins and has the whole download manager thing which I don't really want. What is a good alternative program? I'm not looking for websites like kickyoutube.com, I want a URL sniffer I guess. HTTPGuideDog used to be my Firefox add-on that did exactly this, but it hasn't been updated even to FF3 (and yes I know I can hack it to load anyway, I'm looking for something natively available preferably). I vaguely know of WireShark but last time I used it, I believe it captures individual packets, which is a little too fine-tuned for me. I just want to be able to see what's happening, and download something that the webpage downloaded. Oh, and I'm using Windows 7. Linux probably has some fancy command-line tool, but it just won't cut it for me. :-\ Edit: Oh, and something free please. Feel free to mention paid solutions though.

• Measure Total Bandwidth for Billing

  I am setting up a new network which customers will host their applications on. It needs to be able to scale out to a few hundred servers and each server will have several VMs on it. Right now in my test environment, after the telco router, we are using a Linux router/firewall which is then connected to a Layer 2 switch. Could be a layer 3 in the future. I need to track total bandwidth per VM for each machine, and I need to do it in a way that it is not part of the VM. Each VM will have a private class ip address which is Natted by the gateway, or we may eventually run more than firewall/reverse proxy off a layer 3 switch. So my thinking is that I can do it off of a promiscuous port on the switches, or at the gateway firewall. I would like to have an out of the box solution, preferably open source. Does anyone have suggestions on the easiest way to set this up, and the easiest tool to use. I have looked at the web sites for Nagios, Zenoss, Zabbix, ntops on the firewall, etc. It is hard to ascertain just from the web sites if they do exactly this or not. Obviously, performance is also somewhat key here. Anything running on the gateway should not drag it down doing traffic accounting. Thanks for any thoughts. Tony Zakula

  Quicktime Player for Snow Leopard now allows you record the screen. Awesome! Once you have a movie it will let you trim screen recordings for length. Is there a way to crop the movie's dimensions, either in QT or using some built-in or free software? Update: How to crop to an arbitrary size and aspect ratio? iMovie only seems to let you crop to the aspect ratio of the containing project. Result: Both good answers but since I have QuickTime Player 7 and Photoshop, that's the workflow I choose as the answer. NOTE: If you have Photoshop Extended, you can import a movie, use the crop tool, and Export the cropped movie. Not free or built-in, but convenient. To summarize the instructions from the video link ricbax posted: Open movie in QuickTime Player 7 Copy a frame and Paste it into a new document in Photoshop Draw a rectangular selection around the area to keep and fill with black Invert the selection and fill with white Save as .GIF, with 2 colors Back in QuickTime Player 7, open Movie Properties window Select the Video Track Select the Visual Settings Tab Drag and Drop the 2-color .GIF file onto the Mask drop area (or use choose file button) Export the (now cropped) movie DONE

• Can Safari 5.1 for Mac OS display favicons for bookmarks in the Bookmarks Bar?

  When bookmarking a web site, most contemporary browser will display the site's favicon next to the bookmark, both in the bookmark view and the bookmark toolbar. This is a useful feature. In the bookmark toolbar you can edit the name of the bookmark to be blank, effectively leaving the favicon there as an easily identifiable "button" from which to launch the bookmark. This allows you to make more effective user of the space in the bookmark toolbar. I use this approach effectively in Firefox, Chrome, and IE. For example, here is a portion of my Bookmarks Toolbar from Firefox: However, in Safari, no favicon is ever displayed for bookmarks. In the full bookmark view only a generic globe icon is displayed. In the Bookmark Bar in Safari, no icon at all is displayed. Which means the habit of removing the bookmark name & leaving the favicon is useless. Here's what the same configuration (synced between browsers via Xmarks) looks like in Safari. That blank space is where the favicons should be. The boomark is there -- if you hover over it, the blank space changes color to indicate the presence of a bookmark and a tool tip will with the URL will pop up after about two seconds. However, it's really quite unusable. So. The question: is there an extension, plug-in, or modification of some sort that will enable the display of favicons for bookmarks in Safari (OS X Lion 10.7.3 , Safari version 5.1.3)?

• Looking for an application to record audio and video on a linux "embedded" device

  I am working with a linux x86 device with limited CPU resources (as a prototype we just use a pentium-m netbook). We'd like to record video from one V4L2 device (we'll probably end up using just USB Video Class devices like all modern webcams) and one audio stream from an ALSA source. The thing will not have screen and keyboard, and obviously no X11 environment. Goals are: do as little work as possible to cope with little cpu resources - for example I'd like to record video in the native MJPEG I get out of the UVC devices encoding audio to MPEG3 Layer-2 (aka mp2) is ok since it let us save a lot of space (compared to raw pcm samples) and does use little cpu power I don't mind loosing some video frames here and there (UVC devices do that) as long as I can get audio and video streams syncronized not require user input to start the thing (a python script takes care of initialization, startup, shutdown, etc...) be able to open the resulting files for postprocessing without too much effort (ie, if mplayer or vlc can play it, it's fine) So far the only app I found that could be started from command line and record V4L2 video + ALSA audio is mencoder but I'm having some difficulties with it. It should be able to do that but I cannot record audio and video together - just one of the two. And if I use two different processes to record to two different files I have no means to get them in sync (audio is more or less always correct, but video framerate will vary over time and it seems to lack timestamps to correctly play it back to the correct time). Long story short, how do you record an unconverted MJPEG stream (from an UVC device) and an audio stream (from an ALSA device, possibly encoding to any standard format) using a command line tool, to a single file (MPEG or any other container), keeping audio and video in sync?

• Installing Joomla on Windows Server 2008 with IIS 7.0

  Hi, I have been spending the past while trying to install Joomla on a server running Windows Server 2008. I have successfully installed PHP (using Microsoft's web tool for installing PHP with IIS) and MySQL and am now trying to run the browser-based installation. Everything comes up green, I fill in the appropriate information regarding the site name, MySQL information, etc. and no errors are thrown. However, when I get to the step that asks me to remove the installation directory, I am unable to do so as Windows states it is in use by another program (I cannot fathom how this is true). Also, there is no configuration.php file that is created so if I were to manage to delete this folder I have a feeling that there would be problems. I was thinking there was some kind of a permissions issue and have set the permissions for IIS_IUSRS to have read, write, and execute permissions for the entire folder that Joomla resides in but this has not helped. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated. ;) Greg EDIT: I decided to try and manually install Joomla by manually editing the configuration.php file. This has worked great and now I am certain there is some kind of a permissions issue going on because I am able to do everything that involves the MySQL database (create an article, edit menu items, etc.), but anything that involves making changes to Joomla installation's directory does not work (install plugins, edit configuration settings using the Global Configuration menu within Joomla, etc.) I have granted IIS_IUSRS every permission except Full Control (reading on the Joomla! forums shows that this should be enough for everything to work). This is confusing to me and I am quite stuck on this problem. EDIT 2: The bizarre thing is that in the System Info under Directory Permissions, everything turns up as Writable but then whenever I try to actually use Joomla to, for example, edit the configuration.php file using the interface, it says it is unable to edit the file.

I use OSX and use about 5 spaces with multiple windows in each space. The problem is eventually I'll have around 200 or more tabs open (spread over 15-20 windows) that I don't want to close. Needless to say, my computer's performance starts to degrade. As I write this on my mobile, Safari on my laptop is locking up the computer. I used to use Chrome but found better performance with Safari. What I'd like to know, is there a graph of browser performance based on tab usage? I don't need a browser that keeps all tabs active. It would be great if the browser could increase performance by "putting tabs to sleep". Or if there was some sort of tool for saving a "workspace" of tabs that you could reactivate the next time you are working on that project. What sort of solution can you recommend to solve this problem?

• Free/opensource application for charting stock prices?

  I am looking for a free or FOSS software application for SIMPLY charting stock prices. I am not interested in any of the other nonsense typically bundled with such packages (technical analysis, back testing, tracking etc, etc). All I want to do is the following: Import file from CSV and plot on the chart Ability to scroll the chart left/right (zoom feature would be nice to) Ability to draw straight line (between 2 points) on the plot Ability to plot the graph for different resolutions (for e.g weekly, monthly - or some other custom resolution that I want) print the displayed graph (I can always use screen capture if printing is too much to ask) Thats all I want to do. I am not interested in anything else. I would have thought I could have found something by now. I would have written my own tool (I still will do that at a later stage), but I am a bit short of time at the moment, so I just want something that will do all of the above. Can anyone recommend a package. Last but not the least, I am running on Linux (and would prefer to do so - BUT if I have to, I can run on ahem - you know, Windows)

• XP SP2 Event log not logging events

  I have a problem whereby a terminal appears not to be logging events correctly and occasionally appears to have problems communicating accross the network.The terminal has previously been infected with a virus which apears to have 'played' with the default group policy in the standard user profile. Although, outwardly, the terminal appears to be working normally I still have a nagging feeling that it isn't quite back to the way it was. It was infected by a user plugging in a USB Stick while the company was using the older version of the AV software...typically a week or so before it was updated.I have configured the Event logs to Overwrite as required and to be 5056KB in Maximum size. I have also attempted:- Disabling the Event Log service & restarting Renewing the EVT files in Windows\system32\config directory Restarting the event log service and restarting Clearing the event log in the Services MMC Resetting the Filters to Default in the services MMC Using the EVENTCREATE command remotely from a CMD window on the server to force an event creation event. So far the only operation to have any sort of success is the remote computer EVENTCREATE command from a CMD window on the server. As it stands, the only other time that the computer has managed to create events is while it is being restarted.Has anyone gotany ideas on how to proceed? I'm thinking that possibly a refresh of the 'Windows\system32\config\SystemProfile' folder. I'm also thinking about running a tool such as Malwarebytes but this could be slightly controvertial as the system needs to be running on 'up-time' for as long as possible. I'm also wonderign whether anyone knows of any Windows admin tools that allow me to control the event logging options or default security options so that i could get it back to some sort of standard.What I'm trying to avoid is a complte re-imaging of the terminal. Although this is an option, I dont really want to have to take it if i dont need to.Many thanks in advance for any suggestions anyone may be able to provide.

• How can I unregister a service with dns-sd?

  I am trying to use "dns-sd" command line tool on my Windows 7 machine. I can already do something. For example I can register a service using "dns-sd -R ...". I also can browser (see) registered services using "dns-sd -B ...". What I still miss, is how to unregister a service. At the moment when I type "dns-sd -R ..." the dns-sd does not return me to the command prompt. To return to the command prompt I need to press Ctrl-C. And the service stays registered till I press Ctrl-C. What I want is to run "dns-sd -R ..." in the background regime and then I would like to have a possibility to unregister a service from the command line. One more thing which I do not understand yet is what "to look up a service" means. In my picture it should be sufficient to register a service, to see it and then to unregister it. But apparently I need to look up a service. What does it mean and why I need to do it?

• SkyDrive broken after upgrade to Windows 8.1: "This location can't be found, please try later"

  Upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Store upgrade path has screwed my SkyDrive. The C:\Users\<user name>\SkyDrive folder is empty (it only has single file desktop.ini). When I open the native (Store) SkyDrive app, I see "This location can't be found, please try later". I'm glad to still have my files alive online in my SkyDrive account. I tried disconneting from / reconnecting to my Microsoft Account with no luck. Anyone has an idea on how to fix this without reinstalling/refreshing Windows 8.1? • Lucid Lynx login issue

  Recently upgraded from Karmic to Lynx. Upgrade seemed to go well, no noticeable issues. I logged in, and my window manager wasn't starting. An application would appear, but sans control buttons and border, so figured the windows manager needed to be given a swift kick. Opened a web browser and a quick google had me run "metacity --replace &" and everything popped up. I re-ran the Compiz configuration tool to enable my rotating desktop cube to the way I liked it, and had to reconfigure my desktop switcher to the right number of desktops (although the first time I ran it, it crashed on the panel and reloaded...odd, but once it relaunched it seemed fine.) Today I installed updates, rebooted and logged in for the second time since my upgrade. Again, the window manager was dead, and my compiz settings were gone, and the workspaces were set back to four (and when I clicked on the preferences to change them, it crashed on the panel and reloaded again). Resetting everything made things look somewhat normal again. I'm guessing it'll work until I reboot again. Googling around isn't turning up similar complaints about Lucid Lynx and the window manager. Before I go deleting preference files, anyone else know of this kind of issue and what could be done about it? Or should I start taking the stab in the dark approach of deleting preference files hoping one of them is corrupt or has something unsupported in it that's throwing LL for a loop?

• Compressing and copying large files on Windows Server?

  I've been having a hard time copying large database backups from the database server to a test box at another site. I'm open to any ideas that would help me get this database moved without having to resort to a USB hard drive and the mail. The database server is running Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise, 16 GB of RAM and two quad-core 3.0 GHz Xeon X5450s. Files are SQL Server 2005 backup files between 100 GB and 250 GB. The pipe is not the fastest and SQL Server backup files typically compress down to 10-40% of the original, so it made sense to me to compress the files first. I've tried a number of methods, including: gzip 1.2.4 (UnxUtils) and 1.3.12 (GnuWin) bzip2 1.0.1 (UnxUtils) and 1.0.5 (Cygwin) WinRAR 3.90 7-Zip 4.65 (7za.exe) I've attempted to use WinRAR and 7-Zip options for splitting into multiple segments. 7za.exe has worked well for me for database backups on another server, which has ~50 GB backups. I've also tried splitting the .BAK file first with various utilities and compressing the resulting segments. No joy with that approach either- no matter the tool I've tried, it ends up butting against the size of the file. Especially frustrating is that I've transferred files of similar size on Unix boxes without problems using rsync+ssh. Installing an SSH server is not an option for the situation I'm in, unfortunately. • Constant crashes in windows 7 64bit when playing games

  I've tried everything I can possibly think of in trying to fix this problem and I'm totally out of ideas, so any help would be appreciated: The problem: whenever I fire up a game, it works for a short while with no problems and then it would crash. Either its a hard crash, forcing me to reboot, or windows would report that the display driver has stopped working and recovered. Here is a list of things I've already tried: Drivers - tried the latest drivers (catalyst 9.12) as well as the stock drivers that came with the video card. Also have the latest BIOS/chipset Memtest - Ran Memtest86+ overnight, had no problems, the windows diagnostic tool also does not find any problems. Overheating - Video card/cpu temperatures are well below peak (42 and 31 Celsius receptively) PSU Voltage - CPUID shows that the voltage levels are all above what they should be. The PSU itself is only roughly 16 months old and is a good model. HDD - No errors when checked GPU - Brand new (replaced previous card since I thought it was the problem, apparently not) Overclocking - Everything is at stock levels, memory voltage is set to manufacturer's standard Specs: Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Pro CPU: Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 ghz OS: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit Memory: Mushkin Enhanced 4GB DDR2 GPU: Sapphire HD 5850 1GB PSU: SeaSonic M12 600W ATX12V DirectX: DX11 Event Viewer after a crash always has these logged: A fatal hardware error has occurred.
