• WPF animation/UI features performance and benchmarking

  I'm working on a relatively small proof-of-concept for some line of business stuff with some fancy WPF UI work. Without even going too crazy, I'm already seeing some really poor performance when using a lot of the features that I thought were the main reason to consider WPF for UI building in the first place. I asked a question on here about why my animation was being stalled the first time it was run, and at the end what I found was that a very simple UserControl was taking almost half a second just to build its visual tree. I was able to get a work around to the symptom, but the fact that it takes that long to initialize a simple control really bothers me. Now, I'm testing my animation with and without the DropShadowEffect, and the result is night and day. A subtle drop shadow makes my control look so much nicer, but it completely ruins the smoothness of the animation. Let me not even start with the font rendering either. The calculation of my animations when the control has a bunch of gradient brushes and a drop shadow make the text blurry for about a full second and then slowly come into focus. So, I guess my question is if there are known studies, blog posts, or articles detailing which features are a hazard in the current version of WPF for business critical applications. Are things like Effects (ie. DropShadowEffect), gradient brushes, key frame animations, etc going to have too much of a negative effect on render quality (or maybe the combinations of these things)? Is the final version of WPF 4.0 going to correct some of these issues? I've read that VS2010 beta has some of these same issues and that they are supposed to be resolved by final release. Is that because of improvements to WPF itself or because half of the application will be rebuilt with the previous technology?

• Specifying ASP.NET MVC attributes for auto-generated data models

  Hello to everyone. I'm very new to ASP.NET MVC (as well as ASP.NET in general), and going to gain some knowledge for this technology, so I'm sorry I can ask some trivial questions. I have installed ASP.NET MVC 3 RC1 and I'm trying to do the following. Let's consider that I have a model that's completely auto-generated from a table using the "LINQ to SQL Classes" template in VS2010. The template generates 3 files (two .cs files and one .layout file respectively), and the generated partial class is expected to be used as an MVC model. Let's also consider, a single DB column, that's mapped into the model, may look like this: [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ColumnAttribute(Storage = "_Name", DbType = "VarChar(128)")] public string Name { get { return this._Name; } set { if ( (this._Name != value) ) { // ... generated stuff goes here } } } The ASP.NET MVC engine also provides a beautiful declarative way to specify some additional stuff, like RequiredAttribute, DisplayNameAttribute and other nice attributes. But since the mapped model is a purely auto-genereated model, I've realized that I should not change the model manually, and specify the fields like: [Required] [DisplayName("Project name")] [StringLength(128)] [global::System.Data.Linq.Mapping.ColumnAttribute(Storage = "_Name", DbType = "VarChar(128)")] public string Name { ... though this approach works perfectly... until I change the model in the DBML-designer removing the ASP.NET MVC attributes automatically. So, how do I specify ASP.NET MVC attributes for the DBML models and their fields safely? Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas.

• Custom title with image

  Hi all, i'm creating custom title for activity by disabling standard one and managing everything myself. I wonder if it's possible to replace/theme standart title to my needs. I can customize size, background image, and text via themes by changing windowXYZStyle items. The only thing i couldn't find - how i can add image instead of text. I've tried requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE) and assign custom layout - but it doesn't seems to work. EDIT : Here is a report of testing suggestions, code is below - result - image view is not showing up. • XAML ContextMenu gets bound to wrong row in a DataGrid

  I have a XAML based ContextMenu bound to the rows in a datagrid. It works just fine - until the grid is scrolled! This works just fine - I can right click on a row and it will show me the correct text in the menu item 'Create Reminder for order 12345'. Then I scroll the datagrid down a page. If I keep right clicking on items then suddenly I'll see the wrong order number for a row. I think what must be happening is this : The DataGrid is reusing instances of MenuItem that it has previously created. How can I force a refresh of the ContextMenu when it is displayed for an item that changes? There's no 'Update method on the ContextMenu or ContextMenuService.

• Is SQLDataReader slower than using the command line utility sqlcmd?

  I was recently advocating to a colleague that we replace some C# code that uses the sqlcmd command line utility with a SqlDataReader. The old code uses: System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo procStartInfo = new System.Diagnostics.ProcessStartInfo("cmd", "/c " + sqlCmd); wher sqlCmd is something like "sqlcmd -S " + serverName + " -y 0 -h-1 -Q " + "\"" + "USE [" + database + "]" + ";+ txtQuery.Text +"\"";\ The results are then parsed using regular expressions. I argued that using a SQLDataReader woud be more in line with industry practices, easier to debug and maintain and probably faster. However, the SQLDataReader approach is at least the same speed and quite possibly slower. I believe I'm doing everything correctly with SQLDataReader. The code is: using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection()) { try { SqlConnectionStringBuilder builder = new SqlConnectionStringBuilder(connectionString); connection.ConnectionString = builder.ToString(); ; SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(queryString, connection); connection.Open(); SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader(); // do stuff w/ reader reader.Close(); } catch (Exception ex) { outputMessage += (ex.Message); } } I've used System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch to time both approaches and the command line utility (called from C# code) does seem faster (20-40%?). The SqlDataReader has the neat feature that when the same code is called again, it's lightening fast, but for this application we don't anticipate that. I have already done some research on this problem. I note that the command line utility sqlcmd uses OLE DB technology to hit the database. Is that faster than ADO.NET? I'm really suprised, especially since the command line utility approach involves starting up a process. I really thought it would be slower. Any thoughts? Thanks, Dave

• Linking session state between servlets and EJBs?

  Hello, I have servlets (in a web module) that access stateless EJB beans (in an EJB module). The EJB module is built using SEAM. Users can have different roles and the EJB services check this using Seam's Identity. I also use a customized Authenticator (although this might not be relevant here). I noticed problems with this approach and I'm suspecting that the session context in the servlets is not "linked" with the session context in the EJB beans. What I think happens is something like: User Joe access servlet A and is assigned Session W1. Servlet A calls a login function on an EJB, using the EJB session E1. Later, user Mary accesses servlet A and is assigned Session W2. When calling the EJBs, however, the EJB session E1 is used and therefore Mary is authenticated as Joe. What also happens is that when Joe is calling the servlet twice in rapid succession, the same session W1 is used, but two different sessions E1 and E2 in the business layer, causing errors. I might be wrong in my suspicion, but maybe I'm actually expecting these "sessions" to be linked together while they in fact are not. If this is true, is there any way of achieving this? I could - of course - use stateful beans and save the authentication information in the beans, but this would break the "Identity" concept of Seam (and in general, it would be preferable to be able to use the Session context in my EJB beans). Any help and pointers are very welcome - thanks! Technology: EJB3, Seam 2.1.2. The servlets are actually the server-side of a GWT app, although I don't think this matters much. I'm using JBoss 5.

  There are a lot of questions relating to license keys asked on stackoverflow. But they don't answer this question. Can anyone provide a simple license key algorithm that is technology independent and doesn't required a diploma in mathematics to understand ? The license key algorithm is similar to public key encryption. I just need something simple that can be implemented in any platform .Net/Java and uses simple data like characters. Preferably no byte translations required. So if a person presents a string, a complementary string can be generated that is the authorisation code. Below is a common scenario that it would be used for. Customer downloads s/w which generates a unique key upon initial startup/installation. S/w runs during trial period. At end of trial period an authorisation key is required. Customer goes to designated web-site, enters their code and get authorisation code to enable s/w, after paying :) Don't be afraid to describe your answer as though you're talking to a 5 yr old as I am not a mathemtician. Just need a decent basic algorithm, we're not launching nukes... NB: Please no philosophy on encryption nor who is Diffie-Hellman. I just need a basic solution.

• destroy cfwindow in javascript 'is not a function'

  Hi All, Having an issue here that I have tried everything I can think of but cant get it to work. I have a page with a link that creates a cfwindow like so function create_window(ID){ var config = new Object(); config.modal=true; config.center=true; config.height=775; config.width=700; config.resizable=false; config.closable=false; config.draggable=false; config.refreshonshow=true; ColdFusion.Window.create('newWindow','Window Title', '/source/url'+ID, config) The window is created and the URL has the ID parsed to it that is used for displaying the correct item in the window. This all works fine. The problem is when I try and close the window and open a new window with a different item being displayed, the URL is not changed. I realise that this is because the window is being hidden, and not destroyed, and therefore it is the same window being opened. So I have created an onHide event handler to destroy the window like so. function showItemDetails(){ var ID=document.getElementById("sList").value create_window(ID); ColdFusion.Window.onHide('newWindow', refreshList); } function refreshList(){ ColdFusion.bindHandlerCache['sList'].call(); ColdFusion.Window.destroy('newWindow',true); } Now when I close the window Firebug is returning the error "ColdFusion.Window.destroy is not a function" (In IE the error is "Object doesn't support this property or method"). I have made sure we are running the latest version of ColdFusion 8.01 on the server (as I know that .destroy wasnt added until 8.01) and have applied the latest hotfixes to the server as well. Any ideas?

• How do I develop browser plugins with cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility in mind?

  My company currently has a product which relies on a custom, in-house ActiveX control. The technology it employs (TWAIN) is itself cross-platform by design, but our solution is obviously limited to Internet Explorer on Windows. Long term we would like to become cross-browser and cross-platform (i.e., support other browsers on Windows, support the Macintosh or Linux). Obviously if we wanted to support Firefox on Windows I would need to write a plugin for it. But if we wanted to support the Macintosh, how do I attack that? Is it possible to compile a version of the Firefox plugin that runs on the Mac? Would I be remiss to not also support Safari on the Mac? Are there any plugins which are cross-browser on a platform? (i.e., can any browsers run plugins for other browsers) Since TWAIN is so low-level to the operating system, I do not think Java would be a solution in any capacity, but I could be wrong. What do people generally do when they want to support multiple platforms with a process that will need to be cross-platform and cross-browser compatible?

The website's purpose is the offering of government's contracts and bidding opportunities for different businesses.I'm dealing with the 3-tier architecture PHP website comprising of the user-interface tier(client's web browser),business logic layer(Apache web server with PHP engine in it and a couple of applications running within a web server as well) and a database layer(local mysql database). Now,i need to redesign it to su???rt distributed n-tier architecture and specify how I would go about it.After long hours of research i came to this solution: business logic should be separated into presentation and purely business logic tier to allow for n-layer architecture(user-interface,presentation tier,b.logic and data tier).I have decided to use ??? just for the presentation(since the original existing website is in PHP) and use it within apache web server.In the business logic i want to use J2?? implementation technology instead of implementing it in PHP(i.e using Zend app.server and smarty template) cz J2EE can provide much more essential container services which are essential for business logic,its robustness,maintainability and different critical business operations which will be carried out by the g?v?rnment's website.So,particularly,i want to use J??ss app.server with ?J? business objects in it which would provide all the b.logic in java and would interact with the database and so forth.In order to connect PHP on a web server with java on app.server i'm gonna use PHP/Java bridge API (or maybe Quercus or SOAP is better?).Finally,i have my data tier with mysql which will communicate with b.logic via JD??.Payment system application in ???.server is gonna use S??? to talk with credit card company. • update variable based upon results from .NET backgroundworker

  I've got a C# program that talks to an instrument (spectrum analyzer) over a network. I need to be able to change a large number of parameters in the instrument and read them back into my program. I want to use backgroundworker to do the actual talking to the instrument so that UI performance doesn't suffer. The way this works is - 1) send command to the instrument with new parameter value, 2) read parameter back from the instrument so I can see what actually happened (for example, I try to set the center frequency above the max that the instrument will handle and it tells me what it will actually handle), and 3) update a program variable with the actual value received from the instrument. Because there are quite a few parameters to be updated I'd like to use a generic routine. The part I can't seem to get my brain around is updating the variable in my code with what comes back from the instrument via backgroundworker. If I used a separate RunWorkerCompleted event for each parameter I could hardwire the update directly to the variable. I'd like to come up with a way of using a single routine that's capable of updating any of the variables. All I can come up with is passing a reference number (different for each parameter) and using a switch statement in the RunWorkerCompleted handler to direct the result. There has to be a better way.

  I'm pretty new to Android development. Trying to accomplish something fairly simple -- change some displayed text when a timer ticks. So, when I set a new string for the TextView, the new string is displayed but without replacing the old string. Any other TextViews used in my app behave in the same way. Any ideas what the problem is and how to fix it? • Replacing/Extending Visual Studio's Generate Stub in Visual Studio 2010

  When we write the name of a method that doesn't exist, Visual Studio 2010 asks us if we'd like to generate a method stub with that name. What I'd like to know if is it possible to replace that same code stub generating command with one made by myself. I never did any kind of extensibility programming for Visual Studio so I have a couple of questions: How hard is it? Is it something I can learn in a couple of nights, or is it something that'll make me "lose" a lot of time? It seems to me that there isn't a lot of support for that kind of programming, as generally people are not that interested in developing solutions that extend the Visual Studio IDE. I searched on SO and it doesn't appear to have many threads about extending Visual Studio. I don't know how the generate method stub thing works in Visual Studio, but I just wanted to turn it into something a bit more flexible and useful. Has anyone dealt with these kind of things before, that can give me a pointer to where to start? I know of MS VSX site but that has a lot of resources and can be overwhelming for someone new to the subject as I am. What technology will I need to use? T4? Maybe I'll need to know a lot about the code, like Visual Studio does, so I can know other method's type arguments, names, etc. Is that what T4 is for? Thanks

• Runtime binding of XML Schema to Java code

  Hi all, The situation is thus: I have an application which provides editing capabilities to XML an file. This file follows a certain Schema. The Schema belongs to a subset of Schemas which actually follow a line of evolution from one to another - so they are not so different from one another. The main difference between the schemas is an enumeration of string labels. I now have need to save "meta data" in XML format (This is a second type of XML file). This "meta data" contains a list of labels from the set enumerated in the schema. The application can accept a new schema at runtime and adjust itself. Therefore I have an XML file that must be validated by two schemas one static containing the basic structure of the "meta data" stored in the XML and one which contains the 'proper' label enumeration. The latter schema is determined at runtime. I have glanced over JAXB, XMLBeans and JiBX. I can't figure out what technology to choose that would allow for a runtime bind of code and schema in the way that would most benefit my use-case. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  I am facing a design problem, here is some basic requirement: Aggregator 1. Separate service for blog,video,images and associations. 2. Each of the service should be completely separate, that means they run on separate tomcat. 3. And each aggregator must be able to query local database and other aggregators 4. Traversal of services must be asynchronous using a ring network. For example, we have a ring like ws1-ws2-ws3-ws4-ws1. Each node represents one type of one aggregator. The traveral goes in this way: the query from ws1 to ws2, and ws1 is waiting for the response from ws2 asynchronously; ws2 to ws3, also ws2 wait for ws3 asynchronously. If ws3 has the data, reply to ws2 then to ws1, then reply. However if ws3 goes away, the traversal should go back to ws2, then to ws1, then go to ws4, then go to ws3 again. then tells ws4 since ws3 fails. The required technology is axis2 and tomcat 6. Does anybody have any clue about it? If it is clear, I can clarify the question more clearly. Thanks very much.

  In a DataTable object, is there added overhead to looking up a column value by name thisRow("ColumnA") rather than by the column index thisRow(0)? In which scenarios might this be an issue. I work on a team that has lots of experience writing VB6 code and I noticed that didn't do column lookups by name for DataTable objects or data grids. Even in .NET code, we use a set of integer constants to reference column names in these types of objects. I asked our team lead why this was so, and he mentioned that in VB6, there was a lot of overhead in looking up data by column name rather than by index. Is this still true for .NET? • Programmer Puzzle: Encoding a chess board state throughout a game

  Not strictly a question, more of a puzzle... Over the years, I've been involved in a few technical interviews of new employees. Other than asking the standard "do you know X technology" questions, I've also tried to get a feel for how they approach problems. Typically, I'd send them the question by email the day before the interview, and expect them to come up with a solution by the following day. Often the results would be quite interesting - wrong, but interesting - and the person would still get my recommendation if they could explain why they took a particular approach. So I thought I'd throw one of my questions out there for the Stack Overflow audience. Question: What is the most space-efficient way you can think of to encode the state of a chess game (or subset thereof)? That is, given a chess board with the pieces arranged legally, encode both this initial state and all subsequent legal moves taken by the players in the game. No code required for the answer, just a description of the algorithm you would use. EDIT: As one of the posters has pointed out, I didn't consider the time interval between moves. Feel free to account for that too as an optional extra :) EDIT2: Just for additional clarification... Remember, the encoder/decoder is rule-aware. The only things that really need to be stored are the player's choices - anything else can be assumed to be known by the encoder/decoder. • Line Text with Nav Bar in HTML

  I have a navbar right under the title to the site, but I want to be line up the first and last items in the navbar with the beginning and end of the Title. I don't have a live preview, but I attached an image. I can get it to line up in one browser, but when I open it in the other, its off again. • Fixed mouse pointer with jQuery draggable

  I'm building a little game in HTML5. The canvas element is a viewport into the game world. The user can move the viewport's position in the world by clicking and dragging with the mouse on a small icon. The problem is that the scrolling stops when the mouse pointer hits the edge of the screen. In all likelihood, that will limit scrolling in one of the directions severely, since the icon will be in one of the corners of the page. The only technical solution I can think of would be to somehow fix the mouse pointer's position on the icon and detect the relative movement each frame. Basically I would just reset the pointer position back to the center of the icon after each drag event. Unfortunately, I'm fairly positive that this is not possible. Playing with the user's pointer is a big no-no from a usability and security standpoint. So, is there any other way to do what I want? I'm primarily looking for technical ideas here, but suggestions for a more appropriate interface would also be welcome.

• Core Data + Core Animation/CALayer together??

  I am making an Cocoa app with custom interfaces. So far I have implemented one version of the app using CALayer doing the rendering, which has been great given the hierarchical structure of CALayers, and its [hitTest:] function for handling mouse events. In this early version, the model of the app are my custom classes. However, as the program grows I feel the urge of using Core Data for the model, not just for the ease of binding/undo management, but also want to try out the new technology. My method so far: In Core Data: creating a Block entity, with attributes xPos, yPos, width, height...etc. Then, creating a BlockView : CALayer class for drawing, which uses methods such as self.position.x = [self valueForKey:@"xPos"] to fetch the values from the model. In this case, every BlockView object has to also keep a local copy of xPos, which is NOT good. Do any of you guys have better suggestions? Edit: This app is a information visualization tool. So the positions, dimensions of the blocks are important, and should be persisted for later analysis.
