I've read that FxCop is integrated in to Visual Studio 2008 out of the box as "Code Analysis". I can't find how to run the analysis though. Where is the "Run Code Analysis" function?
I like knockout.js, the only problem is Visual Studio knows nothing about this framework, so it does not prevent me from silly things like assigning some value to observable property with '=' operator which makes it regular property, and it's not easy to reveal at compile time and often at runtime even.
I wonder is there any syntax checker/highlighter for Visual Studio 2010 that helps me prevent faults like this? What about VS 2011? It might be a great help for developers who are new to knockout. Thanks
I'm looking for a easy way to include application installation folder to a %PATH% environment variable after installation is complete.
Visual Studio 2005/2008/2010, Setup Project.
Thank you
I'm using MS VC 2008 and for some projects Intel C++ compiler 11.0. Is it worth using tr1 features in production? Will they stay in new standard?
For example, now I use stdext::hash_map. TR1 defines std::tr1::unordered_map. But in MS implementation unordered_map is just theirs stdext::hash_map, templatized in another way.
I got this error today when trying to open a Visual Studio 2008 project in Visual Studio 2005:
The imported project "C:\Microsoft.CSharp.targets" was not found
So I thought I'd post it here in case anyone else is interested
I seem to have lost the association from .sql files to the default VS T-SQL editor. I'm using Visual Studio 2008. When i open a .sql file it opens using a text editor with no syntax highlighting. How do I reassociate all .sql files with the default T-SQL editor while inside Visual Studio?
Hello,
I've been using MS Visual Studio for a lot of projects, but I notice a lot of people here like to complain about Microsoft and Visual Studio.
So I'm wondering, what does everyone use? Dev-C++? mingw?
What is popular? Also, what is bad about MSVS? What is "better" about the others?
Thanks!

What is the best way to version control my database objects? I'm using Visual studio 2005/2008 and SQL server 2005. I would prefer a solution which can be used with SVN.
Is there a way to detect whether two EXE's (compiled from VS.Net 2008 for C++/MFC) do not have any code-level changes between them i.e. for purposes of knowing that there have been no statement changes.
This is for compliance purposes when my vendor ships me an exe, ostensibly with no changes made to the code since the last time we tested it.
Is there a tool to check that this is so?
Cheers
I am using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and framework 3.5 sp1 on Windows XP sp3. I have Java service which I consume in my .NET application. When attemp to add web service I get next error:

In VS 2008, we were able to add a max line length guide ref: http://blog.feradz.com/2009/02/add-line-length-marker-in-visual-studio/
However when we attempt to do the same thing in VS 2010, it does not work. Does anyone know how to achieve this in VS 2010?
I have a VS.NET 2008 project. Is it possible to check for classes that are not used anywere in the project? With FXcop I can find unused variables and unused code, but not unused classes.
Hello,
Visual Studio C++ 2008
I have downloaded a sample project.
I converted the project from VS 7 to VS 9.
However, when I compile I get this error:
c1xx : fatal error C1083: Cannot open source file: 'WIN32': No such file or directory
Under project properties preprocessor definitions. I have WIN32 defined there.
I have never had this error before.
Many thanks for any suggestions,
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Feature Pack has ribbon menu support. Is it possible to make use of that in an existing MFC application that was not created with a ribbon menu?
I’m working on the build process for a VS 2010 solution and some projects within it target the .NET framework 4.0. As far as I know, to have this type of solution built by TFS 2008 we will have to change the version of the MSBuild.exe file used by the build agent – modifying the TFSBuildService.exe.config file, pointing MSBuildPath entry accordingly.
Do you know if this will have any impact to existing project builds that target the 2.0 and 3.5 framework? Are you aware of any known issues with this type of set up?
Hey,

Hi,
how can I enable database logging in my ASP.net application?
I am using VS2010 (ASP.net MVC2 Project) and would like to see logging that highlights database activity between the application and the database, including database connection establishment (as I do have a connection related error somewhere).
I'm using SqlServer Express 2008.
thanks
I have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installed. It appears in the add/remove programs window.
How can I create/delete/alter tables and find the address of my server if I don't have Management Studio installed?
I'd like to create the tables and such directly in Visual Studio 2010 premium.
the diff result in text might be hard to get used to at first. Is there a way to pipe that output to a visual diff tool, such as something like
$hg diff --visual code.rb
or
$ hg diff code.rb | sometool
so that the result can be viewed visually?
I have Visual Studio 2005 and want to teach myself DirectX in my free time. I downloaded the latest Windows 7 and DirectX SDKs. According to Microsoft's website, the latest DirectX SDK is not compatible with Visual Studio 2005 (I assume they mean it's not compatible with the SDK it came with). Can I configure VS2005 to use the SDKs I downloaded instead of the SDK it came with? If so, is there anything I should be particularly careful with?
I have a standard MSI being created using Visual Studio 2008.
Is there any way that I can have it copy the symbols of the exact DLLs and EXEs that were placed into the MSI somewhere so that I can use them for remote debugging of an installation from that MSI?
I am targeting windows machines. I need to get access to the pointer to the byte array describing the individual streaming frames from an attached usb webcam. I saw the playcap directshow sample from the windows sdk, but I dont see how to get to raw data, frankly, I don't understand how the video actually gets to the window. Since I don't really need anything other than the video capture I would prefer not to use opencv.
